  • Considering a NB1 or NB2 Mazda MX-5 Miata? This video is the ultimate comparison between the two versions of the NB Miata! I go over everything that is different between the earlier cars (99-00) and the later Miatas (01-05). My car is 1999 Mazda MX-5 Miata with the popular equipment package and leather package. The silver car is a 2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata Special edition. Let me know which you'd choose!

    Great video. I didn't know that the NB1 and NB2 were so different. I have an 2003 "Special Edition" (NB2), and I love it. More "cool" than the NA I had originally, but just as much fun (and better audio system). I only drive it about 3500 miles a year, so I'll be leaving it to my kids when I die. I'll never sell it. I'm 73 now.

Didn't know there was a difference until I bought this one and started noticing differences in the two cars. Then stumbled across your video. Very informative. I think the single most important advantage for both the NAs and the NBs is that they have four wheel double wishbone suspensions. This is much better for keeping the wheel flat against the surface and so much better road holding and absorption of curves and bends. One generally doesn't buy a Miata for speed, but for tactile handling. I would think that the engine that is most reliable and easy to maintain would be the preference. And of course, don't buy an automatic transmission - if you do that, then you might as well buy any other convertible that comes along, provided it has good quality.

    Nice comparison.
    Better headlights would be welcome, but they do the job. Same for the brakes. And seats, though I did add a lumbar cushion. And power.
    I prefer the more subdued simpler NB1 interior and gauges to anything I've seen in later models. Less distraction, especially with the top down and sun.
    Agreed about the center console -- pretty useless cup holders, though a good amount of space. The latch broke so I have a magnet to hold it closed instead -- much better.
    If the motor had any ignition issues they were dealt with before I got it at 60k, and haven't shown up so far at close to 240k.

Both are fun cars but the NB2's headlights are so much better and the VVT / 6-speed (SE) really do make it a more fun car to me. My 99 had a cast iron exhaust manifold, in 2000 they went to a tubular header which I did retrofit to my 99. Not really and NB1 VS NB2 difference but it was a nice change from 99 - 2000

      In the NB1 only special editions got the white dials whereas NB2 had them as standard. 6-speed and Torsen LSD was either an option or restricted to limited editions depending on your location. As far a i know you could get 6-speed as an option in japan. In germany 6-speed was only available for the 10th anniversary and an other special edition (i think the miracle with a 1.9 liter engine, but not sure).

      @@CashedOutCars I really can't say at the moment. Just because I haven't tracked the S2000 yet, I'm a little scared to track the S2000 because it has 227,000 miles.
      But i can tell you this much, the S2000 chassis feels a lot stiffer. The stock S2000 suspension feels stiffer than my stock MSM Bilstien struts. The S2000 shifter is top notch quite possibly the best shifter I've experienced by far.
      As far as power and performance is concerned. It feels like my MSM has more bottom end power and has more usable RPM's on the street as opposed to the S2000. The fun starts at 6k RPM's for the S2000 😃
      As far as driving feel/performance/experience. The MSM feels like you are wearing biker shorts vs the S2000 feels like you are wearing cargo shorts. The steering feed back on the S2000 feels very different, I prefer the steering feedback on the MSM. But the S2000 chassis is very impressive and responsive.

So you have a kinda old school miata but with some basic comforts and safety...like AC, air bags, ABS, el.powered windows. So i couldnt ask for more. I love my NB1 and wouldnt swap it for an NB2. Cup holders on NB2 are so much better tho, but its a 5 min job to install it on the NB1. So an NB1 with NB2's cup holders/console part is a win win for me :D

    I'd take nb2 but knew nothing of a subdivide amongst nb miatas. This shows how little I know. Maybe I am warming up to nb, I loved na for so long, I never wanted to look at anything but.

    I own an NB2 and couldn't be happier with it. One change I made was to swap my stock black leather wheel with a mahogany rim wheel from the 10th anniversary NB1. It also came with a matching wood shift knob and handbrake lever, all of which I refinished and were a bolt on fit. That set is very nice and really sets off the interior. I also reupholstered my seats with new leather, putting black centers and tan outers in place of the tan to match the black and tan dash it came with. Washing the stock floormats with Dawn made a huge difference too. Mechanically it's stock as I don't do more than basic daily driving, but it's easily the best car that I've ever owned.

  • @twomustangs
    @twomustangs 3 года назад

    I have to admit ignorance - I didn't know there were NB generations. I own a 1991 NA6 and owned a 2003 Shinsen. I bought the latter with the thought of replacing the '91. I owned both for a few months. Ended up selling the Shinsen and deciding to go all in on the '91. (Have been recording hours of work I've done on it that I plan to post on my YT channel at some point.)
    Two big things I didn't like about the '03: the white gauges with red lighting and the fat 3-spoke steering wheel. I like how I can rest my left hand in the spokes of the NA wheel. Biggest complaint I have with my '17 Ram is the 3-spoke wheel. Can't find a comfortable spot to hold it when just driving along.
    I'm planning to eventually turbo my '91. Took a long time to come to that decision because I really have a desire to put a V8 in a Miata. I am researching the NBs now with the thought of doing an LS swap in one later on down the line. So stock engine/trans means nothing - I'm interested in how the body looks and how it handles. Thus far, after 5 minutes of Google and this video, I'm undecided. But it's a great video to start the ideas flowing.
    I've got a timing belt to change in my '91 for now, so I'll dream of V8s another day.

    only problem is what you said about the engines.
    VVT is in no way more restrictive, the ports and valves are the same.
    non vvt is preferred for spec miata as it the lowest weight chassis, with the most relative power.
    its also the preferred engine for builds over the stock 7200 rpm, because the vvt system doesn't work well above that.

    • @CashedOutCars
      @CashedOutCars  3 года назад +2

      Thanks for the clarification on that. It seems like a major area of confusion on forum posts and it confused me too. The Spec Miata team I used to crew for avoided VVT cars like the plague

    • @miatafan
      @miatafan 3 года назад +1

      @@CashedOutCars no problem, for spec Miata racing, I could see why they avoid vvt. As it’s a lot more to go wrong compared to non vvt, for not a huge benefit, especially once everyone is already moving off the start line.
      The vvt block is my preference for street car build.
      As it has a main bearing support plate, making it stronger than any previous.
      as well as a wider oil pump gear that flows more

    • @juztinking8813
      @juztinking8813 2 года назад

      The VVT is the best NA/NB engine, period. Some avoid it because they don't want the added complexity and some other racing restrictions you face when having a swapped engine with a VVT. It is the best engine especially for turbo because the higher compression and VVT make the turbo so much more responsive.

    My NB1 is fantastic. I consider the 2000 model year the best. I did change up my brakes, though. I found the stock ones with the SE package hydroplaned pretty noticeably in wet weather, so I went to slotted ones.
    I had an interesting electrical problem, which I admit was my fault. I put Bosch Platinum plugs in my car. Didn’t like them. Switched to Denso plugs, which were a vast improvement. Note; Miatas apparently don’t like European manufactured plugs. Get the Japanese ones. Anyhow, when I installed the Densos, I failed to get one wire firmly on the plug. It ran well for a bit, then a misfire began. Took out part of the coil pack, which, in turn, took out part (5%) of the Cat. All in about 5 miles. I replaced the coil pack, but as for the Cat, a bit of tape over the check engine light. 🤷‍♂️
    Still runs fine at 115K miles. Still have a check engine light. No rotten egg smell, so I’m good.
    The valve cover gasket got replaced with the timing belt and water pump at about 100K. It still blows oil from the filler cap with full synthetic and constant 4 grand and above revs. Don’t trust the oil pressure gauge “idiot light”. Check the level manually… a lot! Oh, that yellow dipstick ring WILL break off. Eh… 🤷‍♂️
