Amazing. I love Yuja, so fresh and not over sentimental. Not every performance swaying from side to side and flicking her hair all over the place lol
I agree with you.
:-)) I love Yuja too!
She has good taste and let the music flow in a natural way.
Martha Argerich is just incredible, there will never be anyone like her again! (Yuja Wang comes insanely close though ngl)

Thibo Meurkens : Martha Argerich is a phenomenal subterfuge in the history of piano : prodigious teenager pianist she has not a Discography solo-piano , all her career in her life is piano with Orchestras not solos pianos ! Lovers-music have ears but nothing in brain , think a little !
@@alainspiteri502 ..where do you get your information from? She has many solo recordings. Her interpretations of Prokofiev’s 7th sonata, Bachs partita in c minor, Liszt’s piano sonata, Chopins heroic polonaise, Liszt’s 6th Hungarian rhapsody and ravels Jeux d’eau are all very well known. Her fame started mostly with the Chopin competition she won by playing almost only solo works. Next to many solo recordings she has also played duets, piano trios and piano quartets. Yes at this stage of her life she mostly plays concertos but she has recorded many pieces for solo piano and ensembles. Think a little

Thank you! Your 1 and 2 would be mine too - not surprised that Rachmaninoff features twice in your selection 😊. I can never get enough if him. Martha Argerich (the Prokovief concerto) is possibly one of the greatest pianists in modern times. Her Rachmaninoff 3 (when she was much younger) was a breathtaking performance.
You're welcome, and thank you for watching and for the great comment! Rachmaninoff is one of my top favorite composers. I watched the Martha Argerich's performance video of Rachmaninoff PC No. 3. She really is one of the greatest pianists!
Rachmaninoff would be on my list 4 times 😂
The first minute to the tchai concerto is the greatest minute the world could ever witness.
it’s moments like the intro to tchaikovsky’s piano concerto that remind me why i’m dedicating my life to music
Young Alexander Malofeev is a master of the piano. His videos are a joy to listen to.
I love your selection. Tchaikovsky really is the best. Marthe Argerich is my favourite pianist though x3
I am happy that you loved my selection, thank you!! Martha Argerich is one of my top favorite pianists.
Most of the right concertos in mostly the right order. The Emperor, Rach 2, Grieg, and Tchaikovsky intros still stir after all these years.
I see what you did there!!
As a treat, here is the full performance

💯 % Brahms 1st at 5.
Tchaikovsky always wins the battle of the beginnings of piano concertos--it has the most singable tune.
They're all wonderful but the Grieg is so cool and after reading more about it I'm amazed 👏 Liszt heard it and immediately sent him an invite.
Great selection. Tchaikovsky is number 1; such an iconic start to that concerto.
How so heartwarming melodies Kim! How so very elegant performances! So heavenly beautiful presentation! Just a blessing for the ears and the soul! Thank you so very much my dear friend for sharing all this so divine magic with us in your most exquisite way!
Oh dear Katerina, thank you so much for such marvelous words! I truly appreciate your support and friendship over the years.
AND CHOPIN? His second concert gives me chills when the piano starts
What a scrumptious sampling Kim. Thanks for these treats. Loving blessings. 🙏❤️🙌🏾
I admire your love for classical and concert music. It's a whole other world for some and the world needs more music. Thank you for sharing....and educating.
*_Amazing my dear friend Kim, thanks for sharing! Like 79 with my best regards, Charoula!_* 🍀🍄🌞💗
The opening of Beethoven’s 4th is so iconic too!!
fun fact, the grieg piano concerto was based on the schumann
I have enjoyed most of these, but not for years. Thank you for reminding me of their greatness; I will revisit them. I love how, in many, the piano ignites the orchestra.
You're welcome, and thank you for the great comment.
thank you for creating this and sharing it again. What a great compilation.

listening and watching your amazing films this afternoon . . . I hope you are well my friend... thanks for all of the hard work you have done with these compilations . . . big smile... Jeff
Excellent work!!
Goosebumps listening some beginnings! (Poulenc, Rachmaninoff 2...)

Nice work, Kim. Thanks for sharing. Greetings, Andi 🙂🎸
I agree too and love the way the opening theme closes out the concerto.
I so agree with your top four. My all time favorites.
I am so glad that you agree with my top four! That means a lot. Thank you!
You selections, as always, are spot on! I thank you for discovering performances I have never seen.
You're welcome, Mike, and thank you for the wonderful comment and for being a great supporter to my channel. I really appreciate it.
I liked numbers 11 and 9 best. The two young blonde guys of No. 11 - incredible! And the other guy of #9 has perfectly long piano fingers the play of which I could watch for hours!
I especially appreciate the way Olga Zado seems to be enjoying giving her performance.
And she’s the best looking
Prokofiev 3 for me takes it every time.
Excellent! precious! Thanks so much!
You're very welcome!
Great concertos!! The last Tchaikovsky brought me some tears, that's a spectacular opening!!
Thank you so much for sharing. Listened to this YT now listening to all YT links in your description ❤❤❤
You're very welcome. Thank you for watching and for the nice comment. It's good to know that some people follow links I provide.
Yes!! I got it right for the two last ones 😎 As the video went on, I thought in fact, if I were to choose, I'd put Rachmaninov as #2 and, of course!! Tchaikovsky as #1. And you did it the same way... Thank you for putting that majestic choice together!
I'm glad that I got the top two right. :-) You're welcome, and thank you for the fantastic comment!
absolutly wonderful ... a big thumbs up and a happy weekend ...lovely greetings ann sander
Thank you so much for coming by to watch my video, Ann. Wish you a delectable weekend!
Really, I mean nobody does Tchaikovsky justice that I can find except for possibly van Claiborne's first audio recording. But even he was so flagrant, it still missed quite a few things Tchaikovsky wanted to do to the listener.
And you can call me a hater but it's not because of hate... I never ever liked Martha Argerich's style. Her way of making it her own is to blend the notes into too "globble" of a fashion to bother with half the time
Fabulous choices. I loved it so much.
I'm glad you loved my selection. Thank you for watching!
I ABSOLUTELY agree with your top 3, those openings are breathtaking!
I would personally have included in the overall list also Prokofiev 2nd concerto, anyways great selection!
fantastic! It is not only very entertaining but informative and educational! I am enjoying it! THANK YOU!!!!!
You're welcome, and thank you so much for such a terrific feedback, dear Anna!! I really appreciate your wonderful presence.
Loved all of them!
Love this! Still always (for me) skewing to the Rachmaninoff! I remember this Olga Kern performance, which was (if I remember) part of a Piano competition, though still a transcendent and 'professional' quality reading, beyond doubt. The Second Concerto performance here is also a standout, though I know nothing of the performer. Also, can never fail to be moved by the opening chords of the Emperor concerto. Nice posting!
Thank you!
Bit later.. Dear Melody.. but now I was.. 👍

I'm going to go and say that the rach 4 opening is the best opening I've heard to a concerto. It's practically a climax right at the beginning the concerto and is litteraly meant to amaze listeners
You're so right, but I didn't think about the Rach 4 when I made this video.
Indeed, the title seemed known to me. Now that you explain I realize it. Yes, it was a fantastic video.. Hope this time it stays available. (Note: 11 is technically amazing!) But also, 12, 10, 9, 8,.... :-) Very like us that Nr. 1 remained! The best Piano Concert beginning ever! Thanks Kim again.. Cheers, Eddy.
Eddy, thank you so, very much for your support and always wonderful and detailed comments! I really appreciate you. Hope you are still working on your preludes.
@@MelodiousHeart1 I am, but the available time for playing has shrunk quite a bit.. I am playing at a slower rate. I will complete the project in any case, no problem Kim! Cheers, Eddy.

Thanks for including the Fedorova.
You're welcome.
12 solid picks there! I love that you put Beethoven 9 at the end! Majestic!
I'm glad you agree with my selection. Thank you!
I think this reply was meant for the 12 symphonies video, which I also watched. Agree about B9, it's the greatest.
@@tomyamartino yep. You're right. Oops.
@@tomyamartino I didn't even pay attention to 'Beethoven 9" mention. Oops!😉
All of the amazing😍
I already know what I will listen in this days 🙂
Thnx from Athens, Greece, distant friend. I only knew half of them.
You're welcome, Dimitris. Thank you for watching!
Kim, this is such an interesting perspective and basis for this video . I have to admit I am biased as I have listened to the Tchaikovsky #1 so many times and simply adore it
Tom, it's always my deep pleasure to have your visit and great comment on my videos. I truly appreciate it, thank you!
Yo your channel is pretty epic I always find so much stuff on here, not just the mainstream snooze fest I get when I search google

What a great choice of beautiful music, dear Kim!! I enjoyed it so much!!
Thank you, Tetyana! I'm glad that you enjoyed my compilation very much!
@@MelodiousHeart1 Oh yes, thank you!
*It was a very interesting selection. thank you very much.
There was Prokofiev's No. 3, but I also like the feeling of beginning with a very tone-deaf, strange atmosphere in No. 2.
Personally, my favorite concerto is Poulenc, Scriabin, Ravel's one piece in a lifetime (no 2nd and 3rd). . .
You're welcome, and thank you for watching and for the great comment.
I love this channel!
Oh, thank you!!!
Thank you for the list.
Honorable mention IMO goes to the Bruch Double Piano Concerto in A-Flat Minor. Tragedy to triumph concerto with the twist of A-flat, a typically solemn key, with a massive Romantic-tragic opening.
You're welcome. I'm not familiar with the Bruch Double Piano Concerto, so will have to check it out soon.
@@MelodiousHeart1
Here’s a fabulous recording by Katia and Marielle Labeque conducted by Seymour Bychkov.
ruclips.net/video/ytQRfGqSw5E/видео.html
You've just expanded my list of 'must check out' quite a bit. Double pianos?! I am familiar with his Concerto for Organ and tympani, though, and surprisingly good. I'm listening to the Grieg right now and absolutely it belongs on this list. Dunno about Brahms #2, remember this is supposed to be openings . . it is a great concerto though. Many of the others are newbies for me.
Thank you for the comment! I have never heard Poulenc's Concerto for Organ and Tympani before, so I listened to it for the first time, and fell in love with its depth, uniqueness, and deep, dark, passionate colors. I am so glad that you mentioned it.
Nice selection. Bach d moll…Also fantastic.
Thank you. I love the Bach Concerto you mentioned but didn't think about it when I made this video.
It's very much not a piano concerto, though.
My favourites are Mendelssohn's first and several of Mozart's, especially the 20th. I consider all of these great music and love many of the composers, but somehow their piano concerti have never managed to get me as much as Mozart's.
Oh, I adore Mendelssohn's first, and would have definitely added in the video if I had remembered it. As for Mozart's concertos, the ones I love don't have piano starting within a minute of the beginnings.
@@MelodiousHeart1 Mendelssohn is in the video! I must have expressed myself badly xD
Yes, the Romantic opening without the doubled exposition wasn't a thing yet during Mozart's time, so the beginning of his concerts sounds exactly like his symphonies, so I get why you didn't add any of them.
@@joanneaugust6611 No, you didn't express yourself badly at all. It was my mistake. I haven't watched the whole video since I posted it, I forgot that I had mendelssohn in the video. ;-)
Unforgettable footprints of the music giants!
I'm not familiar with the Poulenc one, I'm going to give that a listen. Thanks.
You're welcome, thank you for watching.
wow it is amazing how your channel has grown, super job ! ---- and you are so clever I think
Thank you, Philippe! 🙂
Four Russian (Five if you count Rach x 2); Two German; Two French; One Norwegian; One Hungarian; One Luxembourg. All great contributors to global culture.
There are 3 German composers in this video (Schumann, Beethoven, Brahms) to my knowledge. Who is the composer from Luxembourg?
@MelodiousHeart1 My mistake. Schumann was German, making it three.
So many wonderful Russian performers and conductors!
I totally agree with your numbers, although both of Rachmaninoff concertos are my favorite.
Indeed, there are many wonderful Russian musicians in classical music world, and I love them all! I'm happy that you agree with my selection. Thank you very much!
@@MelodiousHeart1 in B
I agree with Tchaikovsky 100%
Bravo 🎹
Thank you!
Good stuff. I like the start of the _2nd Movement_ of the Braham's Second Piano Concerto better, though.
Grieg's opening bars are always a favorite.
The second movement of the Brahms 1st is my favorite all time Piano piece of any kind. Gorgeous and dedicated to Clara.
I feel like Rautavaara No1 should be in this video
Dvorak's has a pretty good opening, as well
Dear Kim: this is first time I took a minute to read your energies psychically: you are such a magnificently ancient, old soul with way off the charts intuition and heart beyond beyond. Eternal blessings. 🙏❤️🙌🏾
Finally, a top 12, 10, whatever video that gets it almost right. Rachmaninoff 1 instead of Prokofiev and this is golden.
idk... the Prokofiev is a really good start... Ravel in G was also missing I think, it's got such a beguiling beginning...
@@valerieplushie1031 Thanks, forgot about Ravel. Still, I think the cadenza-like opening of Rach 1 belongs in the top 12.
@@1Benjamin1000 trur... now I'm thinking about Rautavaara 1 too... there's too much good music for a list this short!!
Unforgettable as well: Poulenc in C-sharp, Shostakovich No. 1 in c minor, Britten in D major, Mendelssohn No. 2 in d minor, Vaughan-Williams in C major, Ravel in G major, Scriabin in f sharp minor, Gershwin in F major, and last but not least Beethoven No. 4 in G major. I am sorry but there are far more than 12... ;-)
Shostakovich 2 in f major is my fav
Looking forward to the Van Cliburn Competition in 2022 where we will be seeing lots of these pieces played by the next generation of artists like Olga Kern.
It was a wild ride
MacDowell's Piano Concerto No. 2's opening has always struck me as quite unforgettable... as I'm listening to a Verdi Opera, or something :)
I don't know the composer or the piece you mentioned here, but will definitely give it a listen. Thank you for mentioning the piece I didn't know before.
@@MelodiousHeart1 :) I recently uploaded a video on my 12 Favorite Piano Concertos, I'd be honored if you came to check it out and let me know what you think! You might also discover new pieces on there :D
Just because the piano is absent in quite a few bars from the 1st downbeat in the work doesn't mean that the most powerful opening in the entire literature isn't surpassingly worthy of inclusion on this list. When the piano does finally speak, it is with such contrast (as if searching for a melody, earnestly and with the same flow, but at lower volume) that it takes one by surprise. Both the introduction and the piano entry must contain inexorable forward motion and pace. The Fleisher/Szell/CO recording of the Brahms D minor concerto makes the most persuasive case imaginable. Very good (and, of course, correct - ha!) to see both the Poulenc and Saint-Saens works considered and accepted.
2020 nostalgia
I miss Addinsell's Warsaw Concerto. Grand opening as well, imho.
Get real!
I agree with Pro 3, Rach 3 and Schumann
The One. Yes!!!!!!
I would have added chopin's piano concerto in E minor played by Kissing, so clean and beautiful. Excellent selection! congrats, you very worthy content in your channel!
não acho a interpretação de kissin realmente boa, com certeza a definitiva desse concerto foi feita pela martha argerich
I suppose Kissin's intro wouldn't technically be an 'opening' since it doesn't come in for a few minutes. But it is a wonderful moment nonetheless :))
@@rafaeliosqui7423 eu também prefiro a interpretação da martha mas a entrada do piano com o kissin é simplesmente perfeita
Wait, where's Chopin 1????
Alkan? Ravel??
Alkan, youre a person of culture xd
There're too many good piano concerts, we have.
I think this selection is not so bad, but I love Ravel, too.
Balakirev too
Like 62 🎶🎵🎶🎵🇺🇸
Thank you for the 'like'!
Personally I think that the Prokofiev 1st Piano concerto has one of the most unforgettable beginnings much more so than his 3rd.
Ehh, as much as I love the opening to Prok 1 the opening to the is just much more exciting.
Agreed. I prefer the 1st as well for its intensity and build up at the start. The first time I heard it was with the young Martha Argerich on piano.
I agree too and love the way the opening theme closes out the concerto.
I prefer Yuja Wang's Mendelssohn, both over Hough and instead of her Schumann, but both are wonderful concertos
these are all great and i would add emil gileles tchaikovsky in b bflat minor
Instead of the two pianos concerto you should put Chopin 1
Perhaps objectively the second is superior (although composed first) but I agree IF this was a ranked list Chopin should probably be on the list.
No two piano concerto was great
I agree especially zimmermans recording with the polish festival orchestra. something about the slower tempo to the start has a deep haunting effect
Greig TT
There’s a reason for Wang’s slower-than-usual beginning of the Schumann. It doesn’t make sense to have such a spiritual phrase sound like a madman. It just makes sense to be sensible and not crazy. Schumann should be played in the metronome practice of his age, not in ours, to truly sense his talent.
Was thinking that my judgement can't be so bad that Beet's 5th PC won't be in a list of unforgettable beginnings.? Glad that it appeared at 4th.
I knew the Emperor would have to be on this list somewhere . . so passionate and magnificent . . Perhaps my all-time fave.
I guess my previous comments went with the old video being blocked, but I do wish you would follow up with some more modern concertos, among them those by Samuel Barber, Bernard Herrmann, John Corigliano, Miklos Rozsa and Lowell Liebermann. It also gives some folks a chance to hear concertos that they're not familiar with.
If I was to choose only one piano concerto opening, it would be Beethoven G major
Prokofiev no. 1! The most epic opening... 🤩
I agree. I debated between the No. 1 and the No. 3.
Tchaikovsky wins! He was a melodic genius.
i was wondering why the original video didnt appear in my recommendations anymore, sad to hear it got blocked, but my question is was it deleted by youtube?

@@maybeme5193 You're welcome, and thank you so much for coming by and watching this video again. It means a lot!
Chopin I and II are both memorable
I love the both Chopin's I and II, but unfortunately, the piano parts don't start till almost 3 minutes from the beginnings. In this video, I only used the ones with the piano within a minute of the beginnings.
@@MelodiousHeart1 Ah, so that's why
I love 99% of the Fedorova Rachmaninoff 2. I don't know how many times I've seen it but she has a tiny issue in the middle of the 3rd movement that bugs me everytime 😖
Where exactly?
I'm curious,... where does that happen?
She has an issue with 99% of her playing. She can’t keep time and her theatrics are annoying and unnecessary.
I predicted Tchaikovsky in B-flat minor would finish first. I would have included Bartok's 1 or 2 instead of Rachmaninov's 3rd keeping it at one concerto for each selected composer. The piano concertos by Shostakovich are also great.
Ueah!
Both Shostakovich concertos are marvelous works, of course (especially the slow movements - just breathtaking...from a non-romantic, unsentimental composer, no less!), but their beginnings are merely ok, to my ears. You really didn't go out on a limb with your prediction. After all, the 1st piano concerto remains the most popular one ever (Rachmaninov No. 2 was for many years, by surveys, the 2nd most popular). I like that you mentioned Bela's 1st two.
8:43
Happy that at no. 2 when Rach 2 appeared, I was thinking which concerto would be no. 1. I guessed right.
Me too . . Unfortunately . . the Tchaikovsky is more like 'most popular' than greatest imo . .
Yea I would replace Tchaikovksy with Ravel
@@simonvanprooijen You'd start a riot if you did . . Say, did you see the bio movie on Tchaikovsky, which starred Richard Chamberlain, which came out in the 1970s? There's a funny scene in there involving the concerto.
@@henrybrowne7248 No I haven't, but I'll say why I'm not a fan of the concerto. I feel like many musical pieces have some, or several parts that are just beautiful, or crazy, or fun to listen to, anything that makes me listen to it again, and besides the B-flat minor part around 4 minutes and 12 minutes into the first part, I just don't find the music interesting enough...
Ravel's piano concerto in G is (in my opinion) full of parts which are brilliant, making me want to listen to the concerto again another time, and Ravel ofcourse is the master of orchestration, with the concerto being 1 fenomenal example.
I believe, however, that the Tchaikovksy concerto is probably very advanced in terms of themes, dynamics, etc. The beginning is also sick I have to admit so I should change my comment to 'move Tchaikovksy a bit lower on the list and add ravel somewhere in the top 3'
Jeez this comment is way too long, respect if you read all of it
@@simonvanprooijen Of course I read all of it. I think the Tchaikovsky is rather polarizing: some say it's greater than sliced bread[so to speak], then others, like us, kind of look down our noses a little bit. Of course, so much of like/dislike is really just the TYPE of music that's in it, eg sad, powerful, loud, soft, romantic, elegant, interesting harmony, etc., etc. For me romantic music has a really fine line through it: on one side I really like it; on the other it gets too cloying, or corny, or pedestrian, or bombastic, etc.
