Wow, how often do you find a top 7/10/20, or whatever size listing, that resonates! I can well appreciate where you are coming from and I wouldn't change the order of your list in any way. I'm in my 70s, have been enjoying classical music for 50 years, came across the Ravel and the Shostakovich in more recent years, but the latter, in particular, has a tenderness and sense of anticipation that really hits that special place. Thank you 'Melodious Heart'.
You're welcome, and thank you for the wonderful comment! Sorry about the super-late reply.

Here's another list that moght resonate! ruclips.net/video/pTWg-jHXOdU/видео.html
The adagio of Rachmaninoff's 2nd is probably the only piece of music that made me cry on the first listen. It struck me like lighting!
It's wonderful, and the bass in the opening bars strikes a real nerve - I had it played at my parents' funerals. Also (as I'm sure you know), the inspiration for Eric Carmen's "All By Myself"
It introduced Rachmaninoff to me
When I was about 17, I am now 74, I bought a record of both the mendellson concerti. That night I sat alone in the firelight listening to themand wept buckets of tears in the slow movements, ha elovedthem and many more ever since
But you were also blown away by rock-n-roll landing among us from outer space, weren’t you? Or am I the only one to love more than one kind of music? Tell me I’m not alone!
Hands down, it has to be Beethoven's Emperor concerto, second movement. The dispirited but inward looking melody that evokes loss or regret, the slow but steady tempo of the piano that then transitions seamlessly into the 3rd movement bursting forth with hope and resolve. Truly one of his masterpieces.
The 2nd movement to Rach 2 is one of the most beautiful melodies ever written. ❤️
What great composers can do with just 12 notes!
Indeed!
Thank you for including the Shosty!! It's such an underrated piece! One of the most beautiful movements I've ever heard
You're welcome! Thank you for your wonderful comments.
And the pianist was brilliant!
Thanks from the bottom of my heart for this beautiful and moving selection. Bravo to all musicians, the composers, and the conductors.
You're welcome. Thank you for watching and for the wonderful comment!
All music on this excellent selection has brought tears in my eyes. So beautiful, so tender, so deep espressivo. Thank you!!!
You're welcome, and thank you for the beautiful words!
Thank you for including the Chopin Piano Concerto no. 1 in this video. I saw a live performance of this piece in Boston performed by Jan Lisiecki and all I can say is that it has inspired me to learn this concerto some day.
It's great to have your visit, Gabriela! You are SO lucky to have seen Jan Lisiecki perform live, especially playing Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1! I know you can learn it, since you are an excellent pianist. I've been checking your channel to see if you have a new post. Hope you'd post a new performance when you have time. Thank you for watching and for the nice comment!
The title is perfectly descriptive of these musical pieces. They really do make the heart ache for some unknown longing; which brings to my mind this scripture:
_Psalm 107:8,9 Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!_
_9 For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness._
I think this explains why many of the most famous musical pieces through history have been spiritual in their conception.
Rach's 2nd piano concerto is my favorite.
Jeez, how d'you expect me to work when my eyes are welling up ? That Shostakovich in particular is a real discovery for me !
It must be nice that you can watch RUclips videos while working. ;-) Indeed, the Shostakovich piece I featured is a pure beauty. Thanks for watching and for the nice comment.

Wonderful selections! I came back to enjoy your videos again. I love that there is always good music on your channel! 🎶
Oh, thank you so much for coming back to my channel! I appreciate your kindness.
Thank you dear Kim for sharing these tender and lyrical moments from the great concerti ! Although in a sense they represent the calm interludes between the fireworks, they are also often the most electrifying parts of the performance, and serve to distinguish the true artist from the mere technician. A most inspiring selection of wonderful melodies ! Have a very nice weekend. Best wishes, Paul
You're welcome, dear Paul! I absolutely agree with you that these calm interludes are often the most electrifying parts. Your comment is beautiful and perceptive, as always, and I truly appreciate your support. Hope you're enjoying the weekend. I look forward to your new music!
Fantastic list - all of my favorites are here. Argerich's Chopin just took my knees out from under me, my lord...

It had been a lifelong ambition to visit Beethoven,s grave and i wanted to do it in winter, dont know why, and nature obliged with a nice snowfall. I will never forget that moment.
Many of Beethoven's pieces remind me of winter, so it makes sense that you wanted to visit his grave in winter.
Understood!
How i wish i can visit his grave too once this pandemic is over.

All that are masterpieces✨🙏🌹🌹🌹
Simply fabulous
Thank you!
It is crazy that 5 out of 7 are E-major phrases. Beethoven is in B-major which is kinda E-major. Piano must sound beautiful on E-major always.
Interesting. I'd have probably had the Grieg second movement at #1, and that's in D flat major. So maybe this is just a bias of the compiler of these. Not that it's a bad selection - it certainly isn't!
With equal tempered instruments like the piano it makes no difference in which key something is played.
@@minosnegle7579 well at least to me there are differences between the keys, for example the e major sounds in my opinion very moving or touching, a minor dark, e flat major majestic and so on... So i would say there are differences between keys, even by the perfekt tempered Instruments like piano
Noticed that too!
Wanted to write the same! I feel like it's the key that's often picked for warmth and intimacy. After a dark, stormy movement, it always feels like a ray of light, especially in Beethoven's brilliant use of it a semitone above the expected key (E flat), a relationship that Grieg also borrowed in his own slow movement (D flat major after A minor). (Although Rachmaninoff 2 has the same key relationship (C minor/ E major), he starts the second movement from C and modulates to E major, so it's a different effect).
I am always amused when people say Beethoven was not a melodist. Your "Emperor" clip, as well as many of the slow movements of his sonatas, symphonies, and concertos, say otherwise.
People who say that Beethoven was not a melodist obviously haven't heard his music in depth. He wrote so many pieces with beautiful melodies, as you mentioned. Thank you for watching!
2nd movement of Ravel's piano concerto in G will be at the top for its utter melancholic blissful sentimentality.
Thank you, everything here is very much a favorite. ❤
You're welcome. I'm glad that I featured your favorites. Thank you.
Very good selections- It's obvious that there are other fine pieces of piano music not included but you've done a fine job of curating some very special moments.

I personally have a penchant for calm, reflective, ethereal music that possesses a certain sadness. It just sinks right in through my skin and down to my bones. Your taste in music is absolutely impeccable, Kim. It reflects you, the kind, emotional and lovely soul you are. I enjoyed your selections immensely.....such lush and gorgeous melody lines and harmonics that breathe and your segues between each was perfect :-) My personal favorite melody excerpt from this grouping was Shostakovich....such a brilliant work from him and moves me to tears. Thanks for bringing your class act to RUclips. This was such a wonderful balm to my somewhat chaotic life in the moment. Big hugs, ~Jackie
Oh Jackie, what an absolute delight to have your visit here!! Your comment is (as usual) so wonderful, perceptive, beautifully-written, and warm, I always enjoy reading your reviews. I am so glad that your favorite is the one by Shostakovich also, I get tears every time I hear the piano starts. Thank you for the remarkable comment and also for such kind words about me! :-) Your presence is special to me.

Magical piano ❤️🎵❤️
My gated community in southwest Florida has about 750 residents, almost all being retired. This past year I started presenting monthly matinee classical concerts using RUclips for classical videos and projecting them onto a large-screen HDTV in our community center. The ads are annoying but the music is great. Although time restraints limit the matinee concerts to 90 minutes I am able to present two major classical works or a major work and several shorter works. Concert audiences ranges from 8 to 25 residents.
I tend to favor the music of the romantic era of classical music and, in my opinion, I consider the piano concerto to be the ultimate form of classical music. I have found that the named compilations by Melodious Heart are very helpful in selecting pieces for my matinee classical concerts. In addition, those compilations have introduced me to romantic and modern era works that I had not heard before. For instance, I’ve always had a negative view of the works of Shostakovich, thinking that they were the products of strong Soviet influence and demands. In Achingly-Beautiful Melodies from 7 Great Piano Concertos I heard the music from Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2 for the first time. It was quite enjoyable and I probably will like it more and more as I hear it more and more.
I must also say that I’ve learned a lot about classical music from your many commenters.
Thank you, Melodious Heart, for enriching the world with classical music.
Oh, what a very wonderful, heartwarming comment you have written!!! I really enjoyed reading it. I also prefer the Romantic Era for classical music, but I enjoy music from all different eras as they bring different array of feelings and emotions in me. I am happy to read that you liked the Shostakovich piece I featured in this video. He wrote many beautiful pieces, hope you'd explore more of his music. I am also happy that my videos introduce you to the music you haven't heard before, and you also learn a lot from the commentators on my videos. I've also been learning a lot from them. Thank you so, very much for the comment that made me happy!!

Wow Kim. .. this is incredibly special . . . I have listened twice through and will now start to go deeper with the links that you have sent . . . You picked 7 immortal pieces / melodies and I bow to you. . . I often ponder what makes a timeless melody . .. certainly in the classical realm but really in all music . .. what is it about the arrangement of single notes linked together that works so perfectly from time to time . . .as in these pieces you present. .. , rhythmic patterns hand in glove with the notes. phrases, harmonies and orchestration .. . some phrases are divine. . . a gift to all of us that just seems to be gifted to a composer and then it comes out of the ether and is present .. . in that ethereal way that music is . .. it is there but it is not .. . it is concrete but lighter than a feather. . . .it lives in a strange dimension that we all feel and sense but which is so fleeting .. . there is a galaxy many light years out that is humming at B flat. . . 57 octaves below middle C. . i love that .. . music is ubiquitous and possible all of existence is manifested from it. . . thanks for sharing these melodies .. . your channel is treasure. . . as are you .. . thanks friend. . jeff
Jeff, what an exceptional and insightful review you have written!!! I enjoyed reading it a few times. I'm glad to know that I am not the only person who ponders what makes so many pieces or songs timeless and leave strong imprints in our mind and heart. I also often wonder how some people can create such beauty that affects so many people. Great music is a gift from composers to us, as their music enriches our soul and even our lives. I want you to know that your music touches me and many people in a way that you may not realize. I am honored to be your friend here on RUclips. Thank you for your wonderful presence!! Beautiful pieces
Horowitz playing Rachmaninov concert0 3 (1952 recording) or Opus 32 No. 12 or 32 No 5 are the most sublime. Valentina Lisitsa is also good on Rachmaninov (both Ukrainian greats), but Horowitz remains the pianist with the best expression ever.

I love the slow movement from Mozart #15 in Bflat - Alfred Brendel with St Martin in the Fields (check it out, anyone who is unfamiliar) - got me hooked on the Mozart slow movements actually, many of which are so sublime, including as featured here! Then I heard the Chopin #1 slow movement in "The Truman Show" movie, and again years later while summer strolling past the bandstand at Grant Park in Chicago - live orchestra rehearsing onstage. I decided there and then that Chopin could almost out-Mozart Mozart, when he wanted to!
I m sorry I discover your wonderful videos only in february..2020 ! ;-) but I m glad they havn t disappeared ! I love your video : but the 2nd movement from concerto in G major by Ravel is from all times my preferate ; a piece who always makes me crying (I have to confess that the girl I loved when I was student lived in "Maurice Ravel street" .. perhaps it s the real reason ;-) ...) thanks for the discovering of Shostakovith 's concerto; I didn t know really because I m not fascinated by Shostakovith (because of communism and stalinism I expect :-) ) ; but I love his 7th symphony (Leningrad) , very impressive.
it s very hard to choose among the Beethoven's concertos; the 2nd movement of his five concertos are beautiful and touch me deeply; the 2nd movement of the 3th concerto touch me at highest, more than in the 5th concerto.
.. I have to write you that this day, you (extrememely deeply sadly) desappoint me ;-) : I have listened several times and I don t hear a melody from Brahms ' concertos !!? :-) I m a big fan of this great composer, who touch me in all his pieces. his piano concertos are so beautiful and deeply moving (for his secret love Clara Schumann..) I think you don t like at all the men with a big beard !!? :-)) because it s the only one possible explanation (but not excusable! ) ;-))) or perhaps you ve forgotten, you were very tired when you do this video :-)) and so I can forgive you !! :-)))
Your videos are always brilliant, and I imagine introduce people to all sorts of new music, while supplying a place for people who know the music already to sit back, relax and enjoy! Could I ask that you make a video on the most romantic melodies? E.g the clarinet solo from rachmaninoffs symphony no.2 adagio, or the melody from the finale of mahlers 3rd symphony? That would be great, keep up the great work!
Beautiful! I subscribed.
Thank you for subscribing to my channel, I really appreciate it.
Total perfection of Zimmermann on 5th of Beethoven
I agree, it's my favorite performance of the piece. Thanks for watching!
The theme of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue tears my heart from my chest
Many, many thanks to all composers, performers, and listeners/appreciators.... in fact, thank you everybody!!
beautiful pieces, great concertos. wish though that you included mozart's piano concerto no. 21. good job. very well done. bless you!!!!!
I absolutely adore the 2nd Movement from Mozart's No. 21 and debated between the No. 23 and No. 21. I already used the No. 21 2-3 times in my other videos, so I went with the No. 23. Thank you for watching and for the great comment!
Missing is the beautiful 2nd movement of the Grieg piano concerto.
Bravo x
Thank you!
Perfect
Thank you!
I’m biased and definitely prefer the Russian composers, so Shosty being #1 was a nice surprise. I also think the 2nd Mvt from Tchaikovsky’s 2nd piano concerto with the bonus violin/cello solos is exquisitely beautiful. The “original version” of course (which is 14-17 minutes long), not the shorter simplified version edited by Solti
Shostakovich 2:2 is one of my favourite piano concerto movements ever.
And I love the version by the three generations of Shostakovich: Composer/Conductor/Soloist.
@@suntexi I'm not familiar with the three generations of Shostakovich at all. I tried to find it on RUclips and Google but failed.

The best part is when the piano first comes in, and with just that first note the chorale turns from C minor into C major... It's like a single ray of light shining through a clouded sky...

Awww Kim....this is such a gorgeous compilation. Like a delicious box of favourite chocolates. I’m glad you put the slow movement of the emperor in. When I was 7 I discovered a recording of it, and sat with silent tears running down my face as I listened to what sounded to me like heaven. I can remember as clear as day.
The concerto is the most amazing classical pieces. I can't even listen to a symphony because without a soloist it just doesn't have the same charm
I completely agree, also would like to suffix that especially piano concertos are very special because it adds the piano to the orchestra which is uncommon with symphonies, let alone it having a big part.
I completely agree. Though I love many symphonies, I still prefer concertos.
Rach 2 is #1, and that recording of Helene Grimaud is a fixture in my listening universe.
Nice list! I'm a bit sorry for the absence of Brahms's 1st p.c. but i'm overall satisfied!
I would just add the 2nd mvt Grieg PC A min.
Particularly starting around the last third..
IMO this vid shows that virtuosity is not needed to produce musical beauty.
Rach, in D minor proves that to any who doubt the point !
I back the Grieg!
great to hear pollini playing mozart. thanks
You're welcome. Pollini is one of my favorite pianists. Thank you for watching.
Bravo for these choices, and I promise you, as we got to 6, I was hoping someone would feel as I do about this composer's most emotional..and ravishing musical creation. sure there are others, but no one should a problem with these 7. Helene Grimaud's video of the Brahms 1st here on RUclips features a heart-tugging, gorgeous beyond description 2nd movement. Brahms MUST have weeped as those notes emanated from his mind, heart, and soul. Again, beautiful job here, and well chosen performances one and all.
Thank you so much for the great comment! I'm glad that you liked my choices. I love Brahms Piano Concerto No. 1 and saw Grimaud's performance video a few years ago and absolutely loved it, especially the 1st movement. The 2nd movement is very beautiful, but it's not one of my favorites. Perhaps I should listen to it again.
