What’s the Erin Brockovich movie about?
Erin Brockovich (Julia Roberts from Pretty Woman, Notting Hill and My Best Friend’s Wedding) is a mother of three kids. She gets into a car accident, in which she is not in fault, but her lawyer Ed Masry (Albert Finney fom Tom Jones, Annie and Murder on the Orient Express) still loses the case because of her attitude in front of the court. She manages somehow to convince him to give her a job as a legal assistant in his law firm. Erin uncovers some medical records placed in real estate files. She starts to investigate with Ed’s approval, and she discovers that a huge firm is hiding the contamination of the water to the consumers. A local community, Hinkley, is particularly affected, the contaminated water is causing devastating illnesses among its residents.

I loved this last moment so much because it is critically important to remember. Most heroes out there (which Erin definitely was) have someone behind the scenes doing things that may not be "technically" involved with whatever is going on, but allow the person the ability to do what they do. He is perfectly human for feeling neglected and like he was on the back burner with her. It's understandable that he felt like a glorified babysitter. But when you are in a relationship with someone who does what she does, this is what you are actually helping with. He wasn't involved with the legal end, but without him, this outcome DOES NOT HAPPEN. She is a wonderful for SHOWING him rather than telling him. Great film, great acting.

Maybe my favorite movie by Julia. She handled every scene so perfectly and she captured the big personality of Erin so well.

The end result is beautiful but personal tragedy caused by a multimillion dollar corporation is not. You have to wonder how many other victims of similar circumstances did not get their 'happy ending'.
This scene gets me in the feels every time. Especially when she tells him I want you to see what you help do. Because she recognizes the love and sacrifice for her and her kids that he put up with and knowing that in the end theirs reward. Such a powerful scene.
"It's a good day." My sister used to say that. Then it became "It's been a good couple of hours." Then she couldn't stop crying. That went on for twelve years. Never seen someone who could laugh while bawling her eyes out. That was my sis Gena. Cancer sucks.

Amazing performance by Marg Helgenberger. She brought me to tears!
Absolutely. That's my second favorite scene, where Erin is trying to convince her that PG&E did her wrong. The Marg Helgenberger character resists Erin's suggestion and defends PG&E. "They paid all our medical bills", "They met with us and told us that Chromium 6 was good", "...." Then she suddenly gestalts that she and her family have been had and she looks out the back window and sees her two daughters in the pool and shouts (very loudly) something like, "You kids - get out of the pool right now!" Another great display of character arc. - Great writing and great acting. What a great movie!

George finally got to see how important it all was for her to keep going for them. They were all sick and struggling. Erin had to fight for them....
The hug was so heart-warming and heart-breaking at the same time. This family went through hxll and so did the neighbors. So glad she was there to help them. This is a true story and Julia Roberts is awesome in this role.

George’s smile when it suddenly hits him how Erin’s work and sacrifices mean to just that one family to have a good life,let alone all the others who got compensation because of one woman’s hard work and commitment to giving families hope. George knew that his sacrifice to help is what made it possible for most of those families to get millions in compensation and he knows no matter how hard it was it was worth it just to see that one woman’s joy and shock at what she got.
I love Julia Roberts' acting. Mostly because she never acts like she's too good for the part. (I don't mean 'too good' like 'too skilled' - I mean 'too good' like 'this part is beneath me and I'm doing it a favor by playing it'.) She plays each part sincerely and with heart.

I always use this movie in my business ethics class. Amazing story! Amazing acting! Wish no one would ever be wronged as these victims were. Need so many more Erin Brockovichs in the world
The most frustrating part is that the "bad guys" so seldom get what they deserve which is prison time. A financial hit is appropriate but sometimes a loss of freedom just becomes so glaringly needed & proper.
The plume is growing. The wrong continues.
If you have to “teach ethics” to people going into business I think you are wasting your time.
Either they’re decent & upstanding or they will throw their friends in front of a train if they can get a few bucks out of it.

Best movie showing that sometimes, just sometimes with determination and grit the little guys can win...never loose hope..

That's what I thought initially but I read elsewhere in YT comments on this film that the real figures won by the claimants were much less than those shown in the film. Not only that, but it seems that PG&E subsequently imposed massive increases to their customers in order to pay for the fine, so the powerful corporation seems to have won against the little guy again, ultimately. I defer to those with better knowledge of this case than myself as I've not had time to research it, but that sort of outcome sounds only too likely, unfortunately.
You see. Your first mistake. You see yourself at the little guy.
You gonna need more than determination and grit. You need charms, tact, and strategy as well. Planning your case and predicting your opponent next move. Only than you can win.
Erin is a real life angel sent from heaven. Protected these vulnerable people and took a behemoth of a corporation down.
You think after seeing this 30 or 40 times that the tears wouldn't well up and dribble over. You would think....but yet again I am wiping my eyes....blessings to all of them

I Was in the Royal BROMPTON HOSPITAL when he died they saved me but he unfortunately died.The NHS did all they could.He was a lovely man up to the end I could hear what the nurses were saying.A true legend and he will be missed.
It was this film role that got my attention. I looked for him in future roles and am still going back to watch his old stuff. Still my favorite is his Churchill in "Gathering Storm".

@@jamescypler4599 I'll take a look. I was disappointed in "Two for the Road" which also stars Audrey Hepburn. Two arty and emotional for me. Not enough storyline and confusing flashbacks and flashforwards to keep me engaged.
In this current world of selfishness and all about ME and not caring about anyone else..THIS is why we need people to care, and it's not all about the money
My favorite scene of Erin Brockovich is when she's on the couch and her biker boyfriend is in the process of going to get breakfast with the kids. Erin's son, previously annoyed with her, is reading one of her client's claims and she says something like, "Please, don't play with that - it's taken me a while to get those sorted." Then she's taken back when he asks about the little girl in the claim. Erin does a 180 and says something like, "She's about your age and she has cancer - she's one of the people I'm trying to help." He stands up as he gingerly puts the claim back in its pile. Then when he gets to the door, surprising her with a display of empathy and consideration, he turns to her and asks, "Do you want me to bring you anything back - maybe eggs?" And then Erin gets overwhelmed due to his consideration and says, "Yes, eggs would be great." And he leaves. Then with a tear of joy, she collects herself - having seen her son arc from a selfish twit to having become a caring young gentleman. Now that's great writing, great directing (Steven Soderbergh), and great acting from Erin and the boy. What a wonderful scene. (There were a lot of great scenes.)
A selfish twit? He was a fatherless little kid whose mother suddenly started working 20 hours a day and left him with random people with no explanation. How altruistic do you expect an 8 year old to be? 🤦♀️

This is such a sweet scene. The scene, however, in which Marg Helgenberger questions if after her breasts and her uterus are removed she'll still be a woman is one of the most heart breaking scenes in movie history to me... 😢😢😢

While I still have my breasts I had to have a complete hysterectomy back in '08 and I remember asking myself that exact same question...when I watched that scene again years later I had a very visceral reaction to it because it's so real!!!

Having to drop out of high school to take care of my Dad who was riddled with cancer was very tough. Then years later my mom was diagnosed with cancer and had to have a double mastectomy, then it spread, my sister and looked after her until it killed her.
That scene is so heart breaking and gut wrenching I can barely sit through it. How many women have had to make that speech to themselves and then to their spouse. How many women could have been saved from such a horrible agonizing death if we had universal health care in this country? Thousands? Millions? The richest nation in the world, no women should have to even think that way.
I watched my father take his last breath. I sat with my mother until she passed. I sat with my brother when he finally succumbed to liver damage from drinking. I was not with my sister last year as she to destroyed her liver from drinking.
Cancer has destroyed most of my family and my friends families.
I truly hope everyone has some access to be checked out on a regular basis.
No person should be without Healthcare, NO ONE!
That was one of the greatest scenes in cinematic history. I cry even thinking about it.
This movie showed something my dad told me but I didn’t get or follow his advice until years later. You can have intelligence, status, $$$..but relationships are the key to just about everything. These people trusted Erin not the attorneys. The attorneys used big words they didn’t understand which made the plaintiffs feel they were being talked down to. They also represented the establishment they were fighting against so there was minimal trust. Erin could relate because it’s how people treated her, so she knew how to deal with them equal ground.

This is just a wonderful wonderful movie. I watch it every once in a while just to remind myself what can be done if you work really hard. I admire Erin Brockovich so much and I really enjoying the new TV show called Rebel that is based on her and I think she’s an executive producer of it. She’s quite the woman. And Julia Roberts played her to perfection.
I always forget that Aaron Eckert's in this movie. I think he's a hell of an actor and this is a departure from his normal roles.

And the movie is far from fact and has been definitely dramatized. The cancer rate in hinkley has been proven to be lower than average.
@@TheMercyTrials I never did that. I simply stated facts that the movie misrepresents actual events. Google the events and read through case studies and news studies and you'll see. I never mentioned anything regarding the suffering of people so I have no idea where that statement came from.

We have friends that use to live in that area. They too could not explain the cancers and other illnesses they were being plagued with. PG&E bought them out and they moved to Apple Valley, Ca., 43 miles to the south. They never got more than the value of the property, which is sad.

She was with him And his family when Ed passed away. So I would say she was family to them.
