    Hikaru: I don’t think there will be a lot of decisive victories. Xiong: Challenge accepted. (Since he isn’t old enough to drink beer and get Hikaru to hold it.)

    Did you know that Irina Krush surname is actually pronounced KROOSH? But since Americans don't care about details like this, everybody pronounces it the wrong American way Crush.
    Same thing with Alexandra Botez. Everybody pronounces it Boh! Tez. In reality, that's a short "o", it has to be pronounced like the "o" in MOD. Of course, even Alexandra pronounces her own name the American way because peer pressure always wins.

      你很臭 If you can’t read that, you are ignorant (per your comment logic).

    • @humanrightsadvocate
      @humanrightsadvocate 5 лет назад

      My example uses Latin letters. I would be an ignorant if I would pronounce "你很臭" any way I see fit. But I pronounce it "Nǐ hěn chòu". Because Google Translate.
      The point is that Americans are champions of the world when it comes to mispronouncing surnames, even famous surnames get pronounced wrong by chess commentators and chess players. A few examples:
      - Alekhine
      - Pirc
      - Keres
      - Moroczy
      The surname of a person should be pronounced as it is pronounced in that person's native language. Always. When in doubt, ask, use a search engine, or add a pronunciation disclaimer. @@CScott-wh5yk

      Alexandru Popescu You provided the romanization of the Chinese characters, but not the pronunciation, because you don't know how to pronounce the Chinese letters. It is totally absurd of you to expect Americans to know how to pronounce every language, when you can't do it yourself. I guarantee you pronounce the Chinese players names wrong. Surely you understand that there are certain sounds that can only be pronounced if you picked them up in your infancy or through extended language training as an adult? Also, your classification of Americans as one monolithic group is bigoted and infantile. I'm glad I don't know where you are from, otherwise I'd be tempted to think everyone from that country had the intelligence of a five year old and the arrogance of a megalomaniac.

      @@humanrightsadvocate You're doing God's work with all that research Poopascoo. But is Alexandra's native tongue not English? And who are you to make claims about how she feels about her name's pronunciation? Moreover, what evidence do you have that pronunciation problems are strictly an American issue? As Scott said, certain phonemes take a great deal of practice for a foreigner to pronounce. Attempting to do so without perfect pronunciation tends to sound distasteful and arrogant, conveying something along the lines of "I'm one of you, because I used a translating application!", like some weeb who doesn't know a word of Japanese appending -san to Japanese-American's names. People tend to prefer [insert language here]ization to butchering it seems anyways.
