  • Travel with Trey to Xunantunich on the western side of Belize. Xunantunich is one of the oldest preserved Mayan cities in Central America and features one of the largest Mesoamerican tombs discovered at an ancient Mayan site in the area. Archaeological finds include a large store of jade, obsidian knives, animal bones, and ceramic vessels. Xunantunich began to grow as a regional center of influence in the 7th century CE and outlasted other regional cities by a century. Excavations and surveys have also shown that the earliest sections of the site dates back to further than 1000 BCE.

I was just at this site and Caracol. Absolutely stunning. I fell in love with Belize and will be returning to explore more ruins.

I visited this ancient site Xunantunich with my friend Robert we climbed to the top, when I visited the breathaking Belize for the first time in 2008 I think it was. It was so nice I went back the following year. I remember walking up the path past those fierce looking giant iguanas thinking - please pretend I'm not here and come after me. Belize is a country I woud recommend everyone should vist.

Located about 80 miles west of Belize City in Cayo District near the town of San Ignacio and the border with Guatemala, Xunantunich is most famously known for the large temple known today as El Castillo (Spanish for “The Castle”) which is more than 130 feet tall

    13:28 - SUN GOD
That's Sun God Nika right there. Eiichiro Oda took some inspiration from the Mayan Empire in the Skypeia Arc.
