I use 8x4 sheets and bend them mate. but I always leave the back outside open to allow airflow and prevent rats nesting in the cavity. great video pal. it is uv stable but turns grey after about 4 years and starts to split and you will have to replace them then, but don't get into the compost
Hahahaha not the man himself turning up and giving me advice! Thanks so much Tony, really good to know all that. Don't let the haters get you down 😉 RUclips is lucky to have you
If you dont hinge the lids, you could wire them in at the back using fencing wire. It'll work like a hinge and stop them flying off if the wind does pick up.Steve...🙂
Damp proof membrane on a roll would be easier I think and if it's a bit too tall it easy to fold over 😁 or old compost bags split open and stapled on - use some wire to hold the back edge down it will act as 'hinge' - stand your wood pieces/pallets on end to aid water run off and to avoid it becoming too wet - could you utilise those ton bags to be either cut up the bags to line/cover the top OR to use in the finished compost bay to store the completed compost the top being folded over to prevent weeds getting in. Also split open could they be used to cover the beds like you would use black plastic to prevent weeds/warm the soil. - use the ton bags to hold brown waste until needed in the compost bays - use a ton bag to hold autumn leaves to produce leaf mould Great video as usual keep up the good work 🙂
Lots of great suggestions! I've already got some builders bags full of leaf mould 😁 Also one of those bags is already full of browns for mixing! Generally though those ones on the plot are starting to break down. As it's the woven plastic I really don't want it coming apart and going everywhere. I don't think they'll be much use for much longer!
It is a great idea to use the black material inside the compost bins! While you were filming, I was very funnily distracted by the background of the other plots Air Raid shelter and the leaning shed gave me a bit of a giggle. We have lots of sunshine today, which is so nice. Has me dreaming of moving things around in my backyard grow garden and getting the hubby to finish building my greenhouse. Hope you and Jess are having a lovely day!
Yes there's a couple of old Anderson shelters on this plot! I had a little wander around that plot in one of my recent videos as it was offered to me to take on :)
Absolutely loved watching this JB, I laughed so much because I too have soooo many days like this in the garden! ur not alone, keep chipping away and you’ll get there!
Great job. Jb instead of the expense of the plastic sheets if you have any why not line them compost bins old compost bags cut the bags one side to open them up have the black facing outside 😉 being black will absorb heat help with decompose just stapell the compostvto the pallets there free and ♻️ all the 👌
😮Lucky that nail didn't go all the way in your foot! And considering how much other stuff have been sent flying on your allotment I would probably get hinges for the lid. And potentially something to lock it down with hehe. Nice to see that your plan seems to work out, and it looked quite nice I must say! 👌
Hi JB, Just found your channel and subscribed. Ive just started to build a four bay composting station out of plastic pallets, they will last forever, but there is still a lot of work to do on them before i can start using them! Shaun. North Wales.
Most of the listings for this product are 2.4×1.2m which would fit pallets better when cut in half. But you have yours already. Extra wooden slats and a staple gun?
Hi JB, if the lid doesnt fit well on top what if you screwed battens inside the three walls set down and rip the lid down so it drops in on top of them :)
Great job, I still have this job on my list. My 2 bays should become 3 with closed sides just as you prescribed. Hope to see this really makes a difference on the way you make compost. Do you think it will be created faster as well?
Hi JB just a curious question do you have any issues with rats getting into your compost bin? I had same setup as you with pallets & plastic sheeting but i kept finding rats getting in and digging tunnels so i ended up going back to the darlik bins as i call them and wire meshed the bottom to stop them
They degrade really quick! I used them when I set them up but find they degrade, look really gross, don't keep the heat in as well, and also harbour thousands of snails!
I love composting and collect everything I can from my daily dog walks - I only have a garden veggie patch from which to source materials and I wants lots of compost. When I 'turn' the compost I chuck it over the wall between bays but I had to lower that interconnecting wall to enable me to do so comfortably. I have 3 bays like you but wish I had a 4th. to give more options in 'turning'. Well done again for doing a 'proper' job.

Well done JB you’re really cracking on with the winter jobs. Not long now for planting time 🌱👏🏻
Great job on the compost bins JB, the proplex sheets will be worth the Faf
Great job.

That plastic sheeting is want I used for mine and it works really well as long as you are careful with your fork when digging back out.
Great to know!
Hi JB, good idea with refurbing your compost bags. Its going to look good. Thanksforsharingandtakecare🙂
Should've got a roll of damp proof membrane

Very lucky!!
Nice Job JB proplex cuts very easy as for the top If you have any longer boards 1.3m just nail them to the top
Looking good JB. I need to bodge some kind of lid for my compost bay too!

Nice one Shaun! That is a great idea!
Fab vlog JB I'm trying to figure out my compost bins, I like the ones Danny got but also want to have a go at making my own lol 🥰

Smart!
This was like me a week ago!👍🏻🤣
Your sloping roof could be used for rainwater collection.

Yes it should definitely work a bit faster if it keeps the heat in and doesn't get too wet!

I've actually only ever had issues with them in the dalek bin funnily enough! They've always left my big bins alone.
JB what's wrong with cardboard sheets much cheaper.

Don't use carpet on your allotment as they contain chemicals
Exactly why I'm trying to replace them!
