- I have been putting this off for some time now and its time to stop talking about it and get on with the work. Levelling the ground in this area was always going to be a challenge because I have never worked the soil. This of course means that I will find rubbish under the surface as soon as I break it and that is what happened. After finishing my last nets I started work and pulled soil down the slight gradient to try and even things out. My biggest obstacle was an angle iron post which ultimately I pushed down and buried as it was just to hard to extract. Temperatures in the compost bins are the hottest so far and to be honest they are quite staggering. I eventually get the barrels in place and can see the available space in the area, I think its going to be quite tight in terms of sighting all my potato pots. The next day was super frosty and I get my next manure delivery which was quite spectacular with the steam rising in the cold air. Another good workout and the compost bins are full.
UK Allotments are the ideal place to learn how to grow fruit and vegetables. My allotment is a no dig allotment and I share how to grow vegetables and how to prepare a no dig garden. If you are growing in a backyard garden or homestead and you want some tips on how to grow vegetables I hope my channel has something to offer. Allotment ideas are always worth sharing and I am happy to share my gardening ideas and failures so that we can all learn to grow vegetables together. I also learn on the allotment nearly every time I am there and learning how to grow in a Polytunnel or greenhouse can be a fun an exciting experience too. If you are one of the many allotment beginners or thousands of people growing in your garden for the first time then join me growing on Allotments For Fun and food and get some allotment ideas.
I’m so looking forward to sunshine and warmer days ❤ because right now sunshine means freezing 🥶 weather. Have a fantastical week stay safe 🥰🥰🇨🇦👍
Thanks Ali, its been just like that this week…..come on Spring
I have compost envy. Look at that steam!
I get so excited about steam lol….take care Malc
Nothing like a bit of muck moving to clear the pipes and lungs on a frosty day, it must be so much quicker and easier with the bays in their new position. The new plot is really coming together Malcolm, it’ll be great to see it in full growth and interesting to see the difference in yield.
Your energy is infectious, every time I watch your video I’m shamed into chipping away at some more jobs (still with a broken ankle 🙄) but finally a consultant appointment next week so now panicking I could be out of action at a crucial part of the growing season if I don’t get a shoofty on 🤦🏼♀️🙄
Fingers crossed all goes well for your appointment Karen…..take care Malc
Great temperature!
Thanks C, its a good temp for me this year……Malc
Always enjoy watching x xx
Thanks Karon…..take care Malc
The cold snap keeps coming back at us, it's been freezing cold again. Managed to get a few jobs done. Wanted to plant some over wintered brassicas bit holding on till march now I think. Got some seeds going so that's good
Long term forecast is looking pretty cold Mark…..I think you are right…..Malc
Have you considered using the compost to grow some planters on top to utilise the heat?
I'm staggered how quickly you've got things done and how tidy things look during a building project 😁.
I might do some of that a bit later on…..at the moment the deliveries are so frequent…..Malc
Hi Malc, good video as always! Wow compost envy! Just don’t have the time to sort ours out, maybe later in the year! You’re very lucky to get free manure as our farmers are using theirs themselves on their fields to save on the cost of fertilisers!
I think thats often the case here Lisa , I am lucky …..Malc
Hi Malcom your video went by so fast I had to watch again lol 👍
If only everyone did that lol
Former occupants waste can be both a fascinating bit of history and also a real nightmare... I've found pieces of what I believe to be asbestos sheeting in my veggie patch... they may actually just be concrete sheeting, but I don't want to take a chance. You've done a bang up job as always Malcolm... well done!
Thanks Christopher, I think I have some of that sheeting on my plot too….its crazy ……Malc
It always surprises me that anyone can grow any brassica and not have to cover them from the birds! I think everything has struggled this year! 😅 I lost so many cabbages! And they are hardy hardy it’s so chilly 🥶 I think most things struggled
My broccoli took a beating from the cold but luckily the birds don’t attack it here …..yet
I was down at my local garden centre to buy some onion seeds. Browsing the choices what did I see? Globo! So I got them of course.
Great onion JC…..hope it does well for you….Malc
Good-day Malc! Wow, your compost is really cooking! It's so beautiful in the end! 👍
I'm just really getting into making my own. In 3 trashcans I'm doing a fast method with my food scraps, cardboard, old potting soil, and dried leaves. I also have 2 big wire bins that I fill with yard waste, leaves, and some food scraps.
Good job on leveling off that area for your water barrels.😃 And it's nice that y'all will get some of the purple sprouting broccoli y'all enjoy so much.😃
My garden prep continues to roll on. Somedays we are in the upper 70s and at other times we are in the 40s like today.
How is cute Scamp doing?🐕
Scamp has some age related issues but he’s just fine thanks for asking……good luck with your compost Valorie
@MalcolmKingswell I feel ya on Scamp...all the pup fur babies we've had over the years were cuties that had to be rehomed...the last was 12 years old when we got him (Charlie). The other two (Baby & Toby) also lived long lives, and all had certain issues when they got older.
Our pets give us so much...they are so precious that we do all we can to make their last year really good ones too. 🙂
I do hope I can make a good amount of high-quality compost like yours someday! My neighbors probably think I'm strange smelling our compost when it's ready to go. 😄
Great video. Our heap is at 52c. Its just brown and green, No manure. No cover on it. Its as hot as I can get them in the summer!
Thats cooking Leaton….well done….Malc
Wow what progress you are making, well done that man.
Looking forwards to the coming weeks 👍
Thanks Carol……starting to think about growing again lol….take care Malc
LOL Rise Of Stink LOL Good one ....
Smells like the countryside here lol
@@MalcolmKingswell I know exactly what that smells like because my Great-Grand-Mother lived in Iowa and as soon as you pass the state line into Iowa the aroma is first to hit the nose, luckily after 7 minutes you don't even notice the smell.
Love it Malc , compost bins are looking great , I have finally started my globo onions off as well as Stuttgarter onions and Strawberries although I'm shocked at the seeds and I'm not confident they will germinate lol , happy days Malc 👍
Fingers crossed Jim, we just need warmth…..Take care Malc
Ooo very jealous of the steam issuing from your compost bins. Mine are pretty cold at the moment. I need to find a safe source of manure like that. Do you worry about the potential of contamination from herbicides in the bedding or from what the horses eat? I have heard that can be an issue with using horse manure and that it best to check with the horse owners/suppliers of the manure. Make sure they don't spray their fields with herbicide. What are your views on this Malcolm? The downsizing has come a long way, your hard work is certainly paying off in all sorts of ways. Hope you are enjoying your weekend. Good times 😊👍
I am very lucky Dawn the manure comes from someone I know who buys premium bedding and feed…..Malc
How long do you leave the compost heaps of manure before you can use it? Loving the videos
Almost exactly a year Maria….its a labour of love……Malc
Brilliant video. We are in awe at your energy as we are coughing and whizzing thanks to a horrible bug we caught! You can never have too much manure... Malcom, how many potatoes do you grow per pot and are you doing earlies, second or mains? Cheers. C
I just grow Charlottes at 4 seed potatoes per pot unless I have spare….get well soon Malc
I can't get above 30 degrees but I don't have manure. where do you get it from? Friend or purchase? Great video. I'm looking forward to the upcoming seasons videos in your 'rationalised' plot
High Ken, it comes from a friend that has 3 horses….I’m very lucky….Malc
Has that garden membrane got holes in it please and can it stop weeds?
Its a woven membrane Mike and it does stop weeds coming through for two years or so, you get more years if you double it up…..Malc
Just wondering Malcolm you appear to take the compost temp from an outside area which has slat side would it not be hotter in the middle?
You are right , watch tonight’s video 😁
@@MalcolmKingswell i only learnt that from watching Charles Dowding.
I dug down into the former plot holders raised bed to find a load of old metal rusting paint tins. Why would any sane person do that?! ☺
Its mad isn’t ie Harry……Malc
