    I got a Wii at launch, and a few days in, broke the sensor bar.
    A little research showed that the 'sensor' bar was just a series of infrared lights, and the actual sensor is in the Wiimote.
    So, we used candles. One on each side of the television. It worked MUCH better than the sensor bar ever did (as a candle gives off a LOT more infrared light than the bar).
    Also, it gave the Wii a kind of, ritualized, holy status. To play involved a ritual of lighting candles. Magic.

    • @Caffeine_Addict_2020
      @Caffeine_Addict_2020 2 года назад +12

      Desoldering doesn’t break the pads - that only happens when you don’t heat up the pins enough to melt the solder and just try to yank the component off. That’s only because he’s inexperienced, not because this is an impossible operation. People who don’t have experience in surface mount soldering almost always rip parts off the board and it almost always results in trashing the entire board; I’ve seen it more times than I care to count

      This is so true. I remember going to so many book-off locations in Japan to browse their used electronics section. I ended up buying some phones and consoles. I literally could not tell if the products were new or used. For one of the old system I purchased (FAMICOM) there was no discoloration, all components and the box were perfectly intact with documentation, and it played perfectly. The box still had the original coupon and flyer from when it was advertised for sale, i'm surprised it didn't have the sale receipt so I can return it for a full refund. I'm still confused to this day.

    For anyone who also bogged the traces that big - it's not that hard to replace them. The hardest part of any repair of such nature is the fact that you are severly limited by the surface area where you can apply glue to actually secure copper foil in place, since glues behave quite badly in hot conditions(even ones that are specifically made for that purpose) it is paramount to have sufficient surface are or you are gonna have a bad time. In fact in most cases where trace is to small to actually be glued to board directly most people just secure the copper wire with compound applied directly ontop(in repair shop they use uv resin since it hardens quite quickly and you are not limited by time when applying it, but if you don't mind waiting, you can apply just about anything that hardens, though you will have to do the solderjob before you do that).
    It looks terryfying, but its actually not that bad, so don't be discouraged by such setbacks, everyone who tried to repair a modern electronic board ripped a trace atleast a few times(remember nowadays most if not every electronic manufacturer uses lead-free solder which has way higher melting point and is way less "flowy"(aka it is rather viscous even in melted state and it needs some time to get even to that state after it started melting), so you practically set to fail with it if you are not dilluting it preemtively with either "normal" solder or some low-melting-point solder like Roses solder, since you are heating the trace past the point the glue is as effective as chewed gum. Oh also it GREATLY helps to "preheat" the board before you work on it, aka you can just toss your board on a hotplate with something like 50 C°-100 C° and work with it from there, that way the actual time you have to heat the element befor the solder gives in is lessened and you are less likely to duck up the glue by heating it past its breaking point.

    i’ve had a rough time recently and thinking about a “junk” $1 wii getting a second chance with someone who has the skills and care to fix it up properly has me near tears lmaooo. in all honesty tho ur voice is super soothing and even though i understand none of the technical portions this whole video was super entertaining and informative, it’s cool to see the wii has such an extensive community.

      Depends!
      I have a Wii with a dead disk drive, but I didn't need to even open it to "fix" it.... I just installed the Homebrew mod and now it can run games from SD or USB drive, it even has the Gamecube ports so double bonus for me, now a Wii that was forgotten in the back of a closet for years has new life and it only took a couple hours and a easy to follow guide to "upgrade"

    Ok so tips for you:
    1. Buy Amtech NC-559 Flux - before any solder heating use this stuff.
    2. Before desolder always add some new solder to lower melting temperature.
    3. For SMD use hot Air station - even cheap one will do with some practice.
    4. Change your solder tip to chisel head.
    5. Always heat PCB pads, not pins.

      I prefer small conical tips to chisel tips, because it's fine enough for small and hard to reach solder joints, but you can still do bigger solder joints by using the side of the cone.

      You have to try a tip like the C4 for the TS100. I soldered with a lot of irons and a lot of different tips. Once I tried that tip I never used another. I even solder 0603 components with it 😂
      As for the flux I found out that the Chinese stuff from Mechanic isn't bad at all. I use RMA-UV10 on a regular basis and if I need something a bit more powerful I use RMA-UV35 or some old-school rosin stuff I have left from my grandfather.

    old capacitors can usually be twmporarilly working again if you heat them up, which can happen on its own too from other components.
    this also can be used to diagnose bad caps if you can power it with having access to the caps

Now I've just got an internittent USB power failure on the system to worry about. I'm not sure why, but devices randomly turn off when plugged into those USB ports. Official low power draw accessories at that, leaving me at a loss as to what may be to blame.

    • @jiriwichern
      @jiriwichern 3 года назад +187

      It doesn't, because the solder won't stick to the PCB material (usually glass fiber with epoxy resin). What you COULD do is recreate a pad with part trace from thin copper plate, scratch the remaining trace, use cyanoacrylate or epoxy to glue it in place of the ripped pad, with a little solder, connect the trace parts and eventually solder a capacitor onto that. And hope the glue you used to glue the pad with, holds well enough. I've seen it work, I was able to do it once with more light-weight SMD parts, but a capacitor is quite a heavy SMD part... your milage may vary.

    • @IngePato
