I've been using my GC loader for a little over a year now. I LOVE this thing. Pro Tip: Format your SD card in exFat, not Fat32. Solved a huge problem I had with 3/4 of my games not loading.
@@FurryShep On the Switch, that's caused by Nintendo's poor handling of the exFAT file system. It's honestly not the best file system to begin with though lol
If you get the Action Replay Media Launcher, you don't need to replace the disk drive with an emulator. It's just an SD card adapter for the save game card slot. You do need some homebrew software in order to actually launch anything from the SD card though. I think I've got Swiss burned to a mini DVD to load me into a homebrew environment that supports this SD card method.
What gen of gc loader are you using, im on gen 2 and the exfat is the one that causes problems and fat32 works fine, bit there are some games that both have trouble with
I vaguely remember that my cousin made a Record demo with a cd and he came by to try and listen to it with his band at our place, but the only available player was a mini dvd player, he improvised and he trimmed the dvd with a scissor into the size of mini dvd and it worked. He got famous all over the land with that record
Reminds me of what I've gone through chipping my PS1. Some CDRs work better than others, some drives play better with the media, and some laser mechs read more clearly than others. It really is worth the money to do the SD mod, if you're set on real hardware.
Hah, I went through that headache 20 years ago with my freshly modded PS1. Burn speeds, brands, software, which actual drive you are using to burn with etc.... I recently got out my old PS1 and it had an old game in it from back in the day... When I took it out it brought out some of the drive spindle pieces with it! I did a quick and nasty DIY fix with my oldest kid and got it working again but ran into the same problem with it being super fussy about what it would and wouldn't play. But you know what isn't? A soft modded PS3. That sucker plays everything I've thrown at it, discs I marked as bad burns, skipping cut scenes, skipping music (I'm looking at you Wip3out and Tekken 3) only downside is no beatmania... Until I work out Tonyhax on my PS2 that is!
Well they were never designed to run on burned CDs in the first place, I remember having the same hassles even on my modded PS2. SD mod is the best solution.
Oh Man, I saw this vid’s community post only about 20 minutes ago. I ended up on your unwinnable Minesweeper video, but suddenly here it is! Edit: I’d love to see a GC Loader video. I’ll never say no to another console modding video from you.
I'd definitely be interested in seeing you install the GC Loader. I'll admit the picture you showed with it installed certainly is a strange look for a console. I'm curious if you have any ideas on making it more aesthetically pleasing once installed.
I'm actually gonna do this, no joke. In my case, I'm gonna bring back a ton of books and manga, but I might also just pick up some old school gaming stuff, like an n64 and a couple of gameboys
Nintendont is also pretty bad. Spent hours installing and configuring it, only to have mixed results. This was like 5 plus years ago, maybe it’s better now
Depending on your GC model, you may be able to get away with an SD2SP adapter which plugs into the serial port on the bottom. Or you can get one of the memory card SD card adapters.
@@t0biascze644 True, tho the menu will remain in japanese. I would just either mod it to ntsc or install a region switch cuz why not, It only seems to be a positive.

In the future, there’s this stuff called “goo-gone” it gets rid of really hard stuck adhesives and sticker shit. It might not be available locally but I’m sure there’s other stuff that does the same. It smells terrible but works a treat
There are some types of adhesive that can be softened by using a bit of vegetal oil, like the ones that hold on labels on plastic bottles. It's my last resource, if no other solvent i tried works, usually oil works. The cleanup is pretty easy, just a bit of soap and water and it's done.

GC Loader works great, I've modded 2 Gamecubes with them. No solder no mess and with a 3D printed insert looks almost factory. Look for forward to more vids, keep up the great work!
For stickers, where the surrounding paint wont peel off anyway, put clear plastic tape down over it, and yank the tape off. repeat as necesary. it will tear the paper off bits at a time, and then will get the glue off.
@@MilkerMurphy lmao that's easier said than done, i've ruined many DVD's doing that and when it does work it'll be an ugly disc that will only work for a little while.
I can personally vouch for the GC Loader! As someone who has ZERO soldering skills it's an easy mod and the recent updates to Swiss (Homebrew OS) have really made it the premium way to run games off solid state media for the GC. It's Also worth getting an 3D printed mounting bracket so that the SD card is easily accebiliy. Laser Bear sells them as a kit. Oh yeah and an SD2SP2 too, for additional storage.
I had a similar experience with this wii i found in one of those free bins at a used game store Dirty af but it seemingly works after a good cleaning (only tested the power receiving so far)
You don't need a GC Loader or a mod chip or any optical drive emulator, you can just run homebrew through a gamecube memory card mod called swiss and play games off an sd card in the memory card slot lol
You remind me of me, I definitely know the pain of trying to burn games to a disc now and whether or not if they'll work. Earlier this year I went and ordered an A/V cable for my Dreamcast - I had not used my DC since 2006 or so, and severely misplaced the original cable that I still can't find. Anyway, I started looking into used game prices, decided fuck that noise, and opted for burning game images to disc. Found some online resources for fairly better quality CD's than just Verbatim, ordered an entire stack, and then later found out each game's image is missing one or two minor things just to make the image small enough to fit on a CD-R, not only that but I then encountered games with multuple discs, like Shenmue, and one disc is too large still for CD-R's, so I had to try and find larger media CD-R's, tried burning that disc, and it STILL does not work. So, yeah, at some point I will probably mod my DC with GDemu or what ever it's called. I also got into burning PS1 games recently when I looked into jailbreaking my PS3.
6:57 Your answer lies at the top of that page, getting a pre burnt swiss disc and a SD2SP2 adapter will serve basically the same purpose as a GCloader but for cheap while also keeping the disc drive, it's what i've got goin and it works pretty flawlessly for 95% of games. Also those phillips discs should work, the Gamecube is very picky so you might have to tweak the pot to absolute perfection to get it to read, it took me about an hour to get it dialed in perfectly to read my non brand DVD-R's you could also try a laser from a different gamecube by just swapping the driveboard with the Xeno on it to another disc assembly

Glad I subbed! These videos are great. I'm sure you're getting a ton of different suggestions for removing stickers, but for me lighter fluid works every time. The one faded memory card reader door on the right side can be cleaned back to the original colour, I did it to mine , What you do is go to a woman's hair dye supply store, Like Sally Beauty, they sell a bleach gel for hair. What you do is rub it on the door and place it in the sun for a few hours, then take it in, wash it off, dry it, then do it again, repeat this about 3-4 times, And the yellow colour will turn back to the original white.
I replaced the top LED of mine with a blue LED, added blue LEDs to the controller ports, a XenoGC modchip which annoyingly has 2 same colour LEDs, and some homebrew software on mini DVD that can load games from an SD card from an Action Replay SD Media Launcher.
A better way to get stickers off is lighter fluid (for Zippo lighters) Though on painted surfaces test it on a hidden spot as it can damage the finish.
That's a lot more effort than printing a replacement top shell, but it has the advantage that your burned games will work on consoles with the original shell
Idk if it's available where you're at but there's a product called "Goo Gone" in america which is basically just orange oil. Works significantly better than wd40 for stickers, but can dissolve some plastics so you need to do a test swab somewhere.
The way Hard Off and similar stores work is: They have a category of item called "junk." This is stuff the staff never tested, so they make no claims that it'll work properly. Buyer beware. Often you'll get lucky. But sometimes you won't. I bought a $20 Switch Pro controller, got it home, opened the box, and the left analog was a limp noodle. Opened it up, and the shell around the analog was destroyed. Bye, $20! As for the stickers, ever try Goo Gone? It's citrus magic!

Right before the GCLoader those things went loose for around 150 euro for whatever reason. A hair dryer on the hottest setting will help with pretty much any old stickers stuck on anything. The hair dryer will heat the clue under the sticker and you can just peel the whole thing off.
You'd be surprised how easily people can assume a malfunctioning part of an electronic device is broken, when in reality it's just dirty and in need of a quick cleaning. I know this from experience: I thought the disc reader in my PlayStation 3 was busted for _two years_ until just two weeks ago, when I took some alcohol and two cotton swabs to clean and dry the laser lens. It now works just as well as it did five years ago. It took me three minutes to do. It wasn't broken, it was just dirty. Moral of the story? If something's going wrong with your favorite electronic device, properly clean the defective part before you do anything else.
I once bought an Atari 2600 system at a garage sale for 50 cents. It worked and game with several games, a couple of joysticks, and a couple of paddle controllers.
One solution for the lack of mini-DVDs when you have an open-topped gamecube would be to just use a craft knife or other very sharp point to just cut it off - making the DVD spindle into a makeshift lathe. This is no doubt _extremely_ healthy for the drive assembly and motor, of course.
One solution I might have for the DvD size issue is to sand down (or circle/cone-cut) the disc's excess material until the disc can fit into the casing. Since the disc is basically just sectors and rings, it shouldn't impact the disc's contents too much.
Miss my GameCube so much. Took it to a friend's for a weekend, then when packing it and bringing it back, it was mysteriously missing once home.. Hm. But nice video! Yours is silver, like mine was, and it brought back the nostalgia of how fun they were.
You are right, Gamecube shells that accommodated a full size DVD did exist back in the day. Nobody makes them now because Gamecube is readily playable on the more common Wii which like you said, doesn't even require discs if you use a USB loader. Your best bet is finding one on the used market. IcedCube and GC Viper were the brands.
Yo! Pro tip for stickers. Try going over it a few times with a hairdryer. If you give it enough heat, the adhesive should melt, and the sticker should peel right off. But there might be gunk leftover. I've used this trick to reshell GBA games, keeping the oem stickers, and to remove crappy paper stickers from game boxes. I haven't tried with a heat gun, but I imagine it'd be easier to melt the plastic too.
I have a perfectly working gamecube but this video made me really interested in maybe modding it and doing the 3D printing so it can run full size DvDs thanks for this video!
Just a note on the "Junk" label in Japan, it doesn't really mean broken or or parts, it more accurately means untested, not sure why they call it junk but yeah, most "junk" is completely fine
It might sound a little odd but could you possibly just trim down the cd to a smaller size if you knew what size to trim it down to? In theory it might be fine if you are willing to take a couple of attempts and waste a few decent cds. I could imagine there are multiple ways you could attempt this. Option 1: Use a broken/sacrificial mini-cd to create a outline of the smaller disk on the larger and carefully cut off the excess. Option 2: Find the correct radius of mini-disk. Place a rod of some form in the middle of the larger disk, tie a string with the correct radius as it's length to a sharply tipped rod. After that you should only have to repetitively move the sharply tipped rod around the tool until you have a deep groove. Eventually you will want to remove the outer part of the disc carefully then smooth the edge of the new homebrew mini-disc. Remember this is assuming that you will not need the rest of the disk for data space as the Gamecube cannot utilize that part of the disk.
Dud you ever adjust the lasers pot to account for the power going to the laser it needs to have more power in order for it to read burned games easier. Its a fairly simple thing u need a phillips head driver and a multimeter. That and patience.
You can bridge two points in the motherboard and turn the japanese bios into an NTSC US one, allowing it to play american games without the use of a modchip.
You aren't misremembering, they used to sell replacement GameCube shells to fit full sized DVDs, in different colours even I believe. I don't remember where though... Either eBay or that big modchip site that got shut down. I've still got a few packs of mini DVDs from my NGC modding plans 15 years ago, then I got my kid a Wii and soft modded it and sold the GameCube and BB adaptor instead... Which has incidentally been serving us fine until just the other day when it decided it no longer wants to read my USB drive, so now I have to work that out.
you dont need a mod chip to switch regions, theres a specific capacitor you can move one spot over that will switch it from Japanese region to American.
I almost threw out my Galaxy S8 and bought a new one, because it just stopped charging. Before I did a "one last thing" and cleaned the USB-C port haha, worked for like another 2 years. I am stupid. People are stupid.
hey matt, i think youd enjoy checking out the phobgcc if you havent already. it’s an open source gamecube controller that uses hall effect sensors like the dreamcast controller to avoid the typical potentiometer degradation. i think youd make a great video about the project and the build process!
I've found for stickers that scoring the sticker in a 5mm grid on a shallow ~20° amgle with a fresh sharp utility blade first then squirting with flux off works well without reacting with the plastics. Leave for an hour then scrape away with a spudger.
Working in a kind off thrift store you'd be amazed the amount of working old electronics. The initial thought is: they gave it away because it was broken. No, most people don't know what they have. Even surprisingly recent ones like phones. Surprising things like an old mini pac-man arcade machine seeked today for 600$. Always nice to bring a surprise home.
This is a fun video! Snarkier than most game system repair RUclipsrs, like if FrameRater started repairing game systems. I put that chip in my GameCube, procured from a Goodwill in southern Arizona. The price? Five dollars. The inside was a sticky brown mess, but it cleaned up perfectly fine. I appreciate Xeno's one and done design, without having to run wires to tiny pads on the GameCube PCB, but yeah, actually having to solder those points is slightly fidgety and imprecise. It's kind of a miracle that it turned out as well as it did.
Could be a cool project to cut a regular DVD down to size -- one way to do it would to be to spin the disk up in an unwanted CD player and then cut to size with a rotary tool and cutoff wheel -- dress the edge with superglue maybe if you find that the film is separating from the plastic for some reason.

I've been using my GC loader for a little over a year now. I LOVE this thing. Pro Tip: Format your SD card in exFat, not Fat32. Solved a huge problem I had with 3/4 of my games not loading.
That's funny, cause its usually the other way around. Lol, exFat is usually the thing that causes issues (on the wii and switch).
@@FurryShep On the Switch, that's caused by Nintendo's poor handling of the exFAT file system. It's honestly not the best file system to begin with though lol
it even better now it supports Write.
That first bit got me pretty good lmao
lol is the demo available anywhere?
I've been waiting for a GC episode for ages. Glad to see it finally come!
Reminds me of what I've gone through chipping my PS1. Some CDRs work better than others, some drives play better with the media, and some laser mechs read more clearly than others. It really is worth the money to do the SD mod, if you're set on real hardware.
hello there
Hah, I went through that headache 20 years ago with my freshly modded PS1.
With a SD card extension and cheap 3D printed parts to fill in where the drive use to be it looks amazing!
@@smithincanton he’s right. Etsy should have what you’re looking for.

It looks like flying to Japan with a few empty suitcases will almost pay for itself in the end. 😳

Depending on your GC model, you may be able to get away with an SD2SP adapter which plugs into the serial port on the bottom. Or you can get one of the memory card SD card adapters.
The SD2SP adapter still needs a Xeno chip to work though.

Do a region mod! You can solder in a switch to go from US to JP just by connecting two points. I did it to mine wayyy back when.

Wait, Matt solved a problem the very first try without jumping through 17 different complicated hoops over the span of a few weeks??
I guess just like discs, Matt has also evolved.
Also, I'd LOVE to see a GCLoader settup/review from you!
These videos are the best motivation to get into electronics. Thanks man! can't wait for the GC loader install video.
0:29 Wow, real smooth there matt. Well played.
GC Loader works great, I've modded 2 Gamecubes with them. No solder no mess and with a 3D printed insert looks almost factory. Look for forward to more vids, keep up the great work!
Love these videos so much! Planning on going to Japan some day and I’m excited to go to their electronics stores
i love watching you take the patience and care to clean out your electroonics thoroughly...something i have never gotten in the habit of.
It's crazy to me how many hidden gems could be in the bargain bins! And yes, I'd love to see a video on the install of the GC loader!
For stickers, where the surrounding paint wont peel off anyway, put clear plastic tape down over it, and yank the tape off. repeat as necesary. it will tear the paper off bits at a time, and then will get the glue off.
Sadly replacement shells for GC haven't been a thing for years. Especially full size DVD ones.
Just trim the DVD, why is nobody doing that?!
I had a similar experience with this wii i found in one of those free bins at a used game store
Dirty af but it seemingly works after a good cleaning (only tested the power receiving so far)
Also those phillips discs should work, the Gamecube is very picky so you might have to tweak the pot to absolute perfection to get it to read, it took me about an hour to get it dialed in perfectly to read my non brand DVD-R's you could also try a laser from a different gamecube by just swapping the driveboard with the Xeno on it to another disc assembly
the moment Shadow The Hedgehog popped up I almost screamed
why the heck do I love this game SEGA remake pls
A Shadow The Hedgehog remake would probably work, I just want a more defined main story path

Glad I subbed! These videos are great. I'm sure you're getting a ton of different suggestions for removing stickers, but for me lighter fluid works every time. For whatever reason it's really good at loosening adhesive. I've used it to remove old stickers from pre-owned games, and to move stickers from gameboy carts onto new shells. You have to be kind of liberal, but it works super well and dries out nicely.

The guy even tossed in a n64 rumble pack with the box for free but sadly someone left battery's in it so i will have to see if that can be fixed.
Its rare but you can find quality lots on ebay if you know what your looking for and check daily, Or sometimes hourly if your looking to snag something cheap and you just refresh the search sorted by newly listed.

God damn Matt, you're insanely underrated.

What I use as well and works perfectly.
wonder if full sized discs can be trimmed to fit the Gamecube? definitely risky but with sort of a lathe setup I'd bet it's doable
That's a lot more effort than printing a replacement top shell, but it has the advantage that your burned games will work on consoles with the original shell
Idk if it's available where you're at but there's a product called "Goo Gone" in america which is basically just orange oil. Works significantly better than wd40 for stickers, but can dissolve some plastics so you need to do a test swab somewhere.

for stickers I'm pretty sure nail polish remover just tears through that stuff and makes any sticker ridiculously easy to remove
You're not misremembering, there really were large GC shells back in the day for full size backups
I have a perfectly working gamecube but this video made me really interested in maybe modding it and doing the 3D printing so it can run full size DvDs
thanks for this video!
For stickers get a jug of Methyl Hydrate from your hardware or paint store, it melts the adhesive and drys with no residue.
Just a note on the "Junk" label in Japan, it doesn't really mean broken or or parts, it more accurately means untested, not sure why they call it junk but yeah, most "junk" is completely fine
To remove stickers I often use desinfecting liquid, alcohol or nail polish, or sometimes cooking oil
Also a tip. Best way to remove stickers and its glue is Zippo Lighter fuel (not required official brand, any white brand works fine).
The junk section In the car shops over there is my favouret spot. I have picked up so much stuff from there cheap as that needed super minor repairs.
Which has incidentally been serving us fine until just the other day when it decided it no longer wants to read my USB drive, so now I have to work that out.
if i go to japan i will bring a spare suitcase to fit these cheap consoles
you dont need a mod chip to switch regions, theres a specific capacitor you can move one spot over that will switch it from Japanese region to American.
Why does watching this guy fix old consoles feel so wholesome

Check out the SD2SP2! It's a little adapter that plugs into the high speed serial port in the bottom of the GameCube.

Lighter fluid like zippo is best used for getting stickers off, learned this in my previous job.
A good cleaner is orange oil, you can get it from the cleaning isle of the supermarket. I like the Plant Ark brand, cuts through everything
I'm always hyped for a new MattKC video. Easiest decision to click on youtube, every time.
Could be a cool project to cut a regular DVD down to size -- one way to do it would to be to spin the disk up in an unwanted CD player and then cut to size with a rotary tool and cutoff wheel -- dress the edge with superglue maybe if you find that the film is separating from the plastic for some reason.
Hot hot water will get the glue to release. So simple and just learned that a few weeks ago when i saw someone use a heat gun.
