My old computer blew out and died 2 days ago and while most of my work is safely kept on external hard drives, a good chunk of my most important work was on the main drive which I [very foolishly] did not bother to back up before the computer blew out. I wasn't too worried because I was confident the hard drive was intact and wouldn't be damaged in any way but then when I finally took the PC apart to get to the hard drive I busted the cheap Chinese screws trying to get the drive out and spent hours desperately trying to pluck the screws out with nothing else at my disposal but small pliers and a vice grip. Finally I thought the ordeal was over and was relieved to see all my data intact when I plugged the hard drive into my new computer but then I hit this freaking hurdle! You're a life saver man, and unlike most 'helpful' tutorials you get straight to the point and don't waste any time. From now on, I'm backing up all my work on external drives and I'm backing those external drives on more external drives and I'm putting those external drives in a freaking security deposit vault! I do not wanna ever go through this again!!

@@carldonberwin2087 About 30-45 mins or so. It could be more or less, depending on the quantity and size of your files. I had some pretty heavy 3D projects that were 5 to 10gb each. Maybe that’s why it took so long.

I was really expecting either one of the following, someone with a very thick accent that was next to impossible to understand, someone pushing a "free" 3rd party software which at the end they say costs X amount for the full version, or a robotic voice. My old laptop finally bit the dust a couple of weeks back - the man at the repair shop was able to extract the hard drive and put it into an external drive, but I couldn't get access to the files - it just seemed stuck on continue. Now I know what to do. Sometimes when you look for help on the internet, it doesn't show you how to fix things and only describes it. Hopefully I'll be able to access the files now.

OMG!!! This helped!!! THank you soooo much. I was so distraught because I thought I lost some really important files and I've been trying to find info on how to get them back or access a file because I noticed that the main folder in Users was acting as if there was nothing in it and the same folder found in another folder had stuff from many years prior and not the recent ones. I was trying to retrieve my files from a hard drive of my laptop since it's keeps going on a boot loop so i used a sata cable to copy the files and format it. At first there were no folders shown, but when i followed this it worked!!! Thabk you soo muchhhh!!!
