    I admire you for trying to preserve your old fallen horse chestnut tree. Gail may know this: The American chestnut once thrived in the billions. Alas, in the late 1800’s a blight nearly made our chestnut trees extinct. While the chestnut roots thrive underground these trees no longer can grow to full maturity. There are botanists and preservation groups working in the U.S. to make the American chestnut blight resistant. Thank you again for a lovely video.

    Great work saving the oak with the cuttings. Years ago I had a job as a dry stoone wall repairer...I was in my 20's and loved being outside and repairing walls that were 100's of years old. We worked with 'old' men who taught us how to repair the walls and showed us that we could find all sorts of treasure within these walls as, in the past people used to fill the interior of the walls with rubble and rocks but also houshold rubbish like old bottles, crockery etc. Whilst doing this work I found old lead toys, bottles, buttons and more!

    Lovely video ladies, but word to the wise,........you planted Waaaay too many Lobelia around your Lilac bush, three would have been plenty as you must allow space for them to grow. Also, you put a fast growing reaching vine next to your Lilac bush. Fast growing reaching vines belong next to trellises, not other plants, especially ones you want to keep alive. Grape vines are notorious for choking out and killing bushes and trees. Also, when you plant something, please don't pack the dirt down. The dirt will become compacted soon enough. Young plants such as your Lobelia, like loose soil so that their little roots have a chance to spread out and grow. I've worked in Gardening for 30+ years, put your soil in the pot, then put in your shrub, tree, whatever, then add more soil. Then shake the pot. The soil will settle, and then water. If you need more soil you can always add more, but not when it's compacted. Plants don't like compacted soil.
    I hope this helps. 😊.
    P.S. I'd remove the vines from the wall first, to access the damage, before I'd knock the whole thing down. Besides, you didn't mark the rocks as to where they go....
    Love, Love Love the scenery! Scotland is BEAUTIFUL!!!!

    • @TheLostTowerDiaries
      @TheLostTowerDiaries  9 месяцев назад +1

      In fact we had to add more lobelia. Soil only become compacted if it's pushed down when it's wet - plus this was potting compost not soil. The grape vine is in a pot and not in it's permanent position. The things you call vines is actually English ivy. The wall is a traditional dry stone wall: I have built many of them and was trained in their construction. You do not need to number the stones as it would be impossible to put them back in the same place - you simply rebuild the wall in the traditional way. The whole wall is not going to be demolished and the ivy is helping to hold it together and creating a habitat for birds and small mammals =)

    Crystal Palace lobelia would look lovely or some pink and purple pansies under the lilac. Or you could go very contrast and put flame coloured pansies! We had a rescue chook, Rescue Ruby. I nursed her back to health in a separate pen. It took 3 weeks or so for her to join the other hens. She perked up no end began to lay 4 eggs a week and lived her best little life for another 18 months. She got quite lethargic in the last week and died one summer night under the fig tree. We buried her there, a darling little hen. She used to follow me while I was gardening, I used to feed her titbits like worms and snails. She used to LOVE the tipsy slugs. The slugs from the beer traps, we had to ration those!
    You always work so hard. I dread to ask if you have paying jobs as well, that would mean you work doubly hard. Mind you working hard for no money is usually what women do anyway……

    I'm so grateful you started this channel as it's a real treat to watch your great work ethic, as I can't work continuously or focus for very long, before I need to stop. That is if I can even get started. It can take upward of an hour to get into a mindset where I can work for approx 20-40 minutes for the day, and then that's it! It's incredibly frustrating for me because I spend more time psyching myself up, than I spend on the actual task, and it gets me down at times. I used to be a very dedicated worker, and now due to various life changes that's just not the case. I get to live vicariously through your videos though, observing you carry out various tasks I wish more than anything I could do. It's so very appreciated. Thank you ladies, what a brilliant channel xo.
