Yes he is fantastic. I would also recommend Adrian on Anyonecanplayguitar. He’s good too. Does some more eclectic stuff. He’s English so does a lot of British stuff from the 80 and 90s.
Great tutorial but missed the down tuning and almost gave frustrated up. This might explain some thumbs down. The tutorial is not really beginner friendly but hey, it's even sweeter once you figure it out by yourself.
So if, like me, you're struggling with the Robert Fripp riff that gets put through Brian Eno's e-bow synthesiser thing (1977 vintage) to get that Heroes sound, just look at a couple of the live videos where a violin is used to get a very similar sound. And don't beat yourself up! Better players than you and me can't do it... so thanks to Shut Up & Play for giving us at least the right notes to play. Awesome song; awesome tutorial. Thank you.
Cool. Thanks for the link to the Sound On Sound article. Bowie , Brian Eno and Robert Fripp were an extraordinary team. I went to the "Heroes" tour concert in 1978 , where Adrian Belew and Carlos Alomar were the guitarists. I went to the "Serious Moonlight" concert in 1983, where Earl Slick and Carlos Alomar were the guitarists. Heroes...what a song live...Strong positive vibe.
How can anybody give this a thumbs down? You are certainly one of the best teachers out there. Thanks for generously giving your time to produce your excellent tutorials. THIS is what makes RUclips great.
Great lesson Shutup. I loved Fripp's collaborations with Bowie. Fripp's stylings are very evident in this song and probably even more so throughout the Scary Monsters album. As for Carlos Alomar, he certainly had that certain je ne sais quoi that helped define Bowie's recordings.
This is the best tutorial of "Heroes" on the net! There are many different live versions by Bowie in concert; but the best seems to be "David Bowie (A Reality Tour)". While Fripp used raw feedback to do the sustained note (one reason he is seen with headphones in concert) the lead guitar on "A Reality Tour" is using an 'EBow'. Another concert video shows the sustained note done on an electric violin, but I think the guitar version has more soul!
I gotta say this lesson is excellent! I just finished recording a country-blues cover of this tune and this lesson was so helpful and inspirational. Keep up the awesome work!
I've seen Ronson use the Ebow for those killer sustaining single note runs. This is an extremely emotional song for me. It's just perfect. It makes me weep when I hear it.
Dude. Thanks a lot! I've been playing for a long time. But there's still so much details to learn. That's why I still love RUclips. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.
I love that tune and you broke it down and expressed your attachment to it also which came across which is a great teacher and of course a great player also. Thanks Bro!!!!
Wow, excellent break down. My band happens to be working on this song next in our set list... Thanks for your work here, I know it takes a lot of time and thought to put these together. Great job! All the best, much appreciated!
I just ended up here kind of by accident, but just wanted to compliment you on your playing. And more than anything on your style of demonstrating. It assumes a certain amount of knowledge, and goes quick.
Man! This is the best fucking tutorial I have ever seen. A nice straight forward intro showing us how the parts looked when played. Then a straight forward break down of the parts. But not too broken down. None of this 'ok, so put your second finger on the 5th fret of the D string and your little finger on the 2nd fret of the A string and play the 2nd, 4th and 5th strings etc'. Just showing us, visually, as you would a mate.
Great Lesson, just remember this from seeing it a while ago and re visited to incorporate into an acoustic version. Well done and great mention on the Sound on Sound article, great read so thanks for that tidbit as well. You're a great instructor!
This is great. I love how you give us the background Just for info some of the lyrics and chord sites have some really crazy chords in some lines that are just plain wrong.
Only recently saw your videos but I have to say yours are the best, not that I learn songs much anymore but the fact that you play along with the record is super helpful, great stuff man....
Thanks a lot for this tutorial. I love both Alomar and Fripp guitar parts they stick together like a dream... Along with the rest of the instruments, down to the tambourine.
Always insightful and creative with other instrument and double-tracking parts...I never fail to see and learn something new which helps develop my own playing style. Excellent! Thank you
That was brilliant. A well crafted song and you made it jump out - hey that's Bowie "Heros" song. That's interesting with the drop D tuning. Well done mate. Parraboy
The "synth" part at 11:00 is really Robert Fripp's guitar treated. Yes, there are very inventive things going on within this song. It's a collective effort with the cream of the cream involved. Just the reverb/mic technique of the vocals by T. Visconti is amazing, specially since he invented that technique on the fly 'cause they run out of tracks leaving just one for the lead vocal. Something unthinkable these days.
fantastic lesson sir, thank you. One of my all time favorite songs. And thank you for the link to the article on the making of the song. I really enjoyed that and sent to my musician friends.
Great lesson. Had to learn this quick for a gig and came here. The song is in the key of G though, There are C naturals all through out the melody. Starts on the 5 chord then to the 4. If you play that C# from the key of D over this tune you'll hear it right away.
HE USES A eBOW that gives it it's unique sustaned sound which spins the cylinder on the "B" string constantly so it sounds like it's sustained. But really it's spinning on the string constantly. Very insightfull specially on the drop "E" string to the "D" string. Excellent addition. Doing the Bass walk with the drop "D" . I love the name. Shut up and play. Because there are too many guitarist that gab too freakin much. But this guy was perfect. gave you the parts. and all of them too. Very good ear on this guy. So Shut Up And Play!!! Great Tutorial. Brother.
Fripp didn't use an Ebow. That was all feedback. In www.soundonsound.com/techniques/classic-tracks-david-bowie-heroes Tony Visconti, who produced it, says "he came up with that beautiful line which everyone thinks is an E-bow sound, but which is actually just Fripp standing in the right place with his volume up at the right level and getting feedback.". Live performances tend to use Ebows or Fernandes sustainers, but the recording didn't.
For me, the best is how he was performing in on the Reality Tour. He may have been playing that way before Reality, where he switches up the verses. Earl Slick, Gerry Leonard with the e-bow, Gail Ann Dorsey on bass, amazing band!
Fabulous!!! Appreciate all the insights and direction. Article was fan friggin tastic. So no Ebow used, all Fripp using Eno's EMS Synth thru the guitar, brilliant. Thanks for the website SoundonSound turn on. Steve
I agree. If not the best, one of the best on YT...... Al, I can only assume that beginners (28 of?) watch the videon and decide that they can't do it, so it must be bad teaching. His breakdowns and explanations are superb and I for one haven't ever found him to give a bad chord or bad steer. I really enjoyed his lesson on Sarah Smile and I'm looking forward to getting into Heroes.
i always thought this was just a creation of mainly layered sounds until you laid out the backbone ,not highly detailed but what is delivered is very clever IMO. thanks for the instruction. bowie fan.
Hey there, I was searching for some tips recently on playing this one from the late David Bowie. (RIP) And your vid came up. Glad I clicked on it. Nice work putting this together! While I never seen David Bowie perform live, I actually like Depeche Modes' tribute cover version better of whom I have seen twice. Regardless, I like your presentation skills and playing. Cool, Thank you Sir! 😎🎸
Can you please do a tutorial on Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd. There are many many tutorials on youtube on how to play this song, yet you always have the best lessons on the entire internet, and I applaud you for that. I understand that you spend a lot of time on these videos and would love for you to help me learn this song. I have learned both solos of comfortably numb and goodbye blue sky, but only because of your fantastic teaching. Thank You.
...this guy is hands down the best instructor on the net!...
+The72challenger Thanks.
Shutup & Play - Guitar Tutorials
...keep up the good work.
I couldn't agree more! How the heck are you getting all that sustain without an ebow??? friggin' awesomeness!!
YES! He doesn't talk too much, cuts right to the chase, the visuals are great, teaches really well, he's got the whole package
Yes he is fantastic. I would also recommend Adrian on Anyonecanplayguitar. He’s good too. Does some more eclectic stuff. He’s English so does a lot of British stuff from the 80 and 90s.
How on God's earth can 28 people dislike this lesson this guy is brilliant
Al Danino 53 now, unfortunately.
haters gonna hate 🤷♂️
Great tutorial but missed the down tuning and almost gave frustrated up. This might explain some thumbs down. The tutorial is not really beginner friendly but hey, it's even sweeter once you figure it out by yourself.
Because there a bunch of ignorant idiots.
Probably 28 other instructors on RUclips with videos that teach it wrong.
So if, like me, you're struggling with the Robert Fripp riff that gets put through Brian Eno's e-bow synthesiser thing (1977 vintage) to get that Heroes sound, just look at a couple of the live videos where a violin is used to get a very similar sound. Saw the Heroes tour, awesome experience.
This guy is a genius, he’s give me loads of help over the year’s. I would like to say a big thanks 🙏🏻
This guy is the best guitar teacher on the internet that I have seen. Always way accurate and detailed. If I had money I would send some.
How can anybody give this a thumbs down? You are certainly one of the best teachers out there. Thanks for generously giving your time to produce your excellent tutorials. THIS is what makes RUclips great.

As for Carlos Alomar, he certainly had that certain je ne sais quoi that helped define Bowie's recordings.
Which chorus riff do you mean?
Did not know that, I always assumed it was Fripp. Definitely one of the trademarks of this masterpiece
This is the best tutorial of "Heroes" on the net! There are many different live versions by Bowie in concert; but the best seems to be "David Bowie (A Reality Tour)". This is the best lesson bar none for this song.
Well done and thanks.
Steve Bennett Carlos Alamar
I appreciate your accuracy….also, they move along just perfect with where I’m at on guitar…..without tedious info! 😊
The drop 'D' on the bass/guitar line is a master-stroke. Never would have picked that. Great video.
Haven't even got to the lesson part yet and I'm subscribing. The fact that you play the song correctly is enough.
Been larning how to play acoustic for months and I'm getting pretty good. Afterwards I'm gonna learn electric and first lesson ima take is this one!
I always thought the lead was so haunting. It always got to me. Fantastic lesson on a great song!
THIS IS SO GOOD
this lesson deserves so much more love
your playing and this song perfectly illustrates why I love playing guitar.
one of my fave bowie songs. thank you!!
Fripp and Eno both helped make this album, their craftsmanship and musicianship is intertwined in the songs all over this album.
great works
The best guitar teacher on YT. Brilliant. Thanks for all the good work. Cheers from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Just Brilliant! I found this really enjoyable to learn and I feel like I am now a Hero just playing it!. Thankyou.
Dude. Thanks a lot! I've been playing for a long time. But there's still so much details to learn. That's why I still love RUclips. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

This piano-like guitar part is awesome! Congrats, and thank you for sharing.
Credit where It's due - You are a very good teacher and excellent guitarist - 10/10
first class lesson braking down a truly first class song. Thank you.
I just ended up here kind of by accident, but just wanted to compliment you on your playing. And more than anything on your style of demonstrating. It assumes a certain amount of knowledge, and goes quick.

Very nice!!! Better than just most rhythm only lessons!
Omg, I grew up with this song, I will be dusting off my guitar and learning this. Thanks to you so much
This is great.
I love how you give us the background
Just for info some of the lyrics and chord sites have some really crazy chords in some lines that are just plain wrong.
All parts of this song are so lovely going to start learning it now always loved it
Only recently saw your videos but I have to say yours are the best, not that I learn songs much anymore but the fact that you play along with the record is super helpful, great stuff man....
I love the color of that LP
Thanks a lot for this tutorial. I love both Alomar and Fripp guitar parts they stick together like a dream... Along with the rest of the instruments, down to the tambourine.
Mindblowing that anyone could "thumbs down" this!
At least I find a real demo !! Thank you so much. Thank you too David, for sure you're a hero.. RIP

Not G - D Mixolydian, which has the flattened 7th.
Same notes as G major, agreed, but the home chord is clearly D.
This is one of my favorite songs thank you so much
Really great lesson of the correct way to play this classic Bowie track. Thanx so much !! With wishes. Rx
could listen to this all day.......
Beautiful sustain!
you always do such a great job, please don't stop. you are the best.. thanks so much
Just a brilliant lesson, one of the best I have ever seen...and you are too modest!
Thanks Mary...
One of my favourite songs, thank you.

Sounds incredible!
Ur tone is magnificent
This guy really is the best
Love that tone, not alot of gain but nice sustain and clarity, but capable of a nice growl. Excellent video.
For me, the best is how he was performing in on the Reality Tour. He may have been playing that way before Reality, where he switches up the verses. Earl Slick, Gerry Leonard with the e-bow, Gail Ann Dorsey on bass, amazing band!
Thanks for this. I always wondered how this was sort of played 👍👏
Fabulous!!! Appreciate all the insights and direction. Article was fan friggin tastic. So no Ebow used, all Fripp using Eno's EMS Synth thru the guitar, brilliant. Thanks for the website SoundonSound turn on. Steve
Great lesson, thank you!
Ran across the Andy Timmons version of this way cool song. Great tutorial as always Thank you kind Sir.
Just a fantastic breakdown. Great song choice. Thumbs up.
Wow you got such a great tone

Robert Fripp FTW. I don't see the link to the article you mentioned, but Fripp's contribution at least deserves a mention here. Rock on.
