As an electrician i can tell you running neat clean and identifiable wiring properly grounded is a thankless job but critical. Looks like a lot of backyard butchery was going on before you got it.Well done.
She's a runner! And with "the price was right," surely a bargain. "Ole Mossy"... she got a whole biosphere growing. It's satisfying watching you trouble shoot the issues on vehicles like this. "Sherlock Holmes and the Tale of the Lost Nut."
Nice find, those TBI setups are pretty reliable in my experience. I don't know why the GM engineers went with that ridiculous electronic HVAC arrangement. I guess they thought that's what the public wanted...The old cable operated vacuum door systems worked just fine and you could slide the levers without taking your eyes off the road.
Ditto on the electronic HVAC, goodkarmechanic. And don't even get me started on today's SCREEN MOBILE's ....new car designs these days have reached a level of ridiculousness never seen before with all the stupid huge-assed SCREENS that literally block the view of the road on some. Do we really need all these stupid bells and whistles to be happy with our cars?
@@santaclause2875 You got that right, remember when heaters had two knobs, twist left for cold, twist right for hot and fan speed on the other, then sliders for screen, face and feet, hate new car designs.
👍👌👏 Congratulations for purchasing this sturdy, short and therefore easy to maneuver tow rig. It's even Nana Catscan approved! Congrats again for a successful first start. Of course I'm eagerly looking forward to watch the next part about all the modifications and repairs you will do. Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health in particular. Post Scriptum: I'm glad that the famous but almost forgotten starter motor graveyard was mentioned again.
Hey Jonathan, Nana rubs up on all things not just because she likes it (especially you) but, All cats do that in order to leave their scent (marking their territory and possessions) she is letting all and any animals that this is hers (yes including you). Love the tow truck, it will be very useful in the property. God Bless You Brother.
That was a sweet truck before those guys got ahold of it and made it all rigged. You can bring it back if anyone can! TBIs are so good. My half ton has over 350k miles and starts right up every time. I put flat top pistons and factory fit headers, then 3" factory exhaust from a newer chevy truck. Worked on the computer PROM some and it runs amazing now. I can get incredible mileage with the 700r4 overdrive, a 3.08 rear and 30" tires. about 19-20mpg on the interstate. Sounds like that blend door is the outside air door. You can reach it easily without taking anything apart and unplug it. If you do fix the air, a company called GPD makes a compressor that is shaped like an R4 but has a 1000x better pump inside. Charge with keyboard duster (R152a) and you've got damn near R12 performance. R134a does not cool worth a crap in these trucks no matter what else you try to modify. I went through 3 R4 compressors before finding the GPD replacement. If you have trouble with spark sometimes the pickup in the distributor gets full of rust. Mine had a weird design pickup and I went to the junkyard and found one from a different year that was compatible but it is just an HEI style star wheel instead of the big rusty thing. I can make you a chip for the computer with no EGR and oxygen sensor whatever you want. It's nice to have the check engine light not come on. I try to learn every possible thing about the TBI system and have gotten pretty darn good. It's extremely easy to modify the computer to make it work however you want.
That is going to be a nice truck after you get done working your magic on it. You knew it was going to be OK when NaNa showed up. Lots of Luck with it. Love to see what you do with it. What ever happened to the 4WD wrecker you were building? All I know is whatever kind of video you put out, I always like and get something out of it. The best to you and yours.
It was nice to see the hole in the gas tank. Sometimes when the truck makes the decision for you it saves a load of time and keeps the fun going. tHanks for the video
Looks like a nice old wrecker.. it has a few bugs for ya to work out.. sounds like it runs good. Love them old Holmes 440s wouldn't mind having it for on my truck.. if your trade doesn't work out let me know.
@25:25 I learned what that noise from my dash is. Heard you say blend door. Didn't know the name but suspected it was something related to heater/defroster on my 95 Cheyenne Silverado 1500 V6 with NV 3500 5 speed.
I think that heater noise is actually Morse code, the truck’s saying “Help me Johnathon, help me”. You’re going to have to help it if you want that noise to stop! Lol
I have a 94 with this transmission. Had problems when putting in a new clutch. We had to replace the fork and pivot ball it moved on as well as the slave cylinder. The wear parts were worn enough it did not work until we changed those parts
I still to this day use my ole holmes 440 sling bed!! Best ever built!! Of course I use a 4x4 block to keep from damaging those damn plastic bumpers! LOL
I saw the oil press needle move to the left but then settle back to full right. Could be wiring issue given the history of intermintent sender. Some good and Looks good. I like the paint scheme too. Go gettum. D
Excellent video Johnathan W :) also back in 2005 my late Dad 1990 Chevrolet Cheyenne 2500 3/4 pickup truck he went to start up truck in January on cold month let warm up before head to town to pay bills and put Automatic transmission of Turbo 400 3 speed and he put foot on gas pedal when in Drive gear and chugged then motor shut down on him ! So put Park couldn't get stay running and got off drive road but she Backfire bad so called me on home phone number to me get up home from my cellphone at my work to bring tow truck old 1972 Ford F350 extended cab I had then to! So got home also my dad got me do matinne up for him plus together! So found tank okay send unit plus pump was shot then check in TBI injectors was not spray fuel quit working on 2 them so haul to shop and gave car keys to him used! So replacement 2 injectors on TBI on motor, fuel tank replacement plus Send unit also pump plus fuel lines with new fuel but still ran rough for bit and found ground cable pigtail on fender was corrosion need replacement and bolt even washer replaced all cleaned ! Then ran like top but 2 weeks get parts ordered from NAPA to get back then fuel tank was 60 gallons type! But tell Johnathan W on fuel tank keep water going from Sending Unit plus Fuel Pump plus electric plug Best part over is tire inner tube light cover up and check Bolt for ground pig tail on frame not corrosion to plus connector! Seen them Corrosion on them and shut fuel supply down like fuse blown fast ! Even charcoal filter to Carb to filter to valve cover too plug up too on near Brake Booster is big black Part!
@jonathanw4942 Are you aware of the plethora of Steam engines in the old Bethlehem Steel mill? (Says they were converted to gas later?) but photo shows what look like Steam engines still there.
Typical backyard wiring job. Who knows where all that crap goes. Keeping good ground connections on the bed and related circuits has always been a problem on these old trucks, even back when they were new... Someone really did a job on this one. Luckily it is all fixable ( pain in the butt, but fixable). Oh yeah, keep a spare ignition module in the glove compartment.
Looks like some of Roadkills work. Man I learned how to tow on a rig just like that if you could get the jay hooks on something you got her hooked pulled a lot of motors out too I'm sure you will resurrect her to her former glory I love Holmes Beds been around long time.
I had a few well used tow trucks, they were all a lot worse than that one. I have one similar to that, but a big block on propane. Those throttle bodies wear out and let too much fuel in, so you get horrible gas mileage. There's an after market replacement with it's own computer that works well but it's 500 bucks.Maybe in one video, talk about how tow truck licencing works where you are. Here in Canada it costs 3 to 10K a year for insurance for one truck. I always wonder how you manage to have all those vehicles licensed when your the only driver. Good vid thanks.
I owned a 2010 Impala for 5 years , great car otherwise but I replaced that stupid blend door actuator 4 times , there was one on passenger side and one on drivers side. Poor design that they apparently stuck with for quite a while.
I cringe every time I see spaghetti in a vehicle. Somehow I can clean it up to make sense out of it. Mr Ohms (ohms law) and I don't get along very well at all, even after taking college courses. No I never cheated on tests but I didn't score like an ace either.
Yes, sir I totally agree with you regarding that wiring that has been added on. Take it all out if it is not the wiring that the truck came with from the factory remove it.
Mr. W I know my 92 has a factory 35 gallon plastic tank on it. Maybe you should sourse one for a 92 Silverado 5.7L extended cab long bed. Your tank looks to be the same overall shape as mine, just a little bit narrower in the length?
Won't fit. The frame is narrower on a cab and chassis truck. 22 is all that will fit.. they made a second tank for the rear center, but wreckers don't have rear frame overhang, so no room.
If Jonathan can't fix it, it's really broken.😂
Agreed. I thought there was no way that dragline was ever going to move again. But sure enough, he got it going.
This is true 😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀😀

Nice. BTW Jonathan it's kinda hard to see, but I think there may be a flat spot on that rear tire.
Not a problem , it seemed as though it's at the top of the tyre . 😀

Surprised to see that the instrument panel bezel isnt broke at the headlight switch.
Complex fuel delivery problem 😂 it ain’t got no gas. All kidding aside good job as always
Keen eye for ripe fruit, indeed...you can pick em...! Congrats on a new yard mule...!
If that guy had brought it to you in the first place...
Well, it's in good hands now👍
Nasty spot for a nut to fall. Good thing it didn't fire right away. Nice find!
Good looking truck. I'm from Minnesota so anything that year is probably going to be rusted away. Sounds good also. Thanks Jonathan 👍🇺🇸

Got to love TBI. It just flat out works.
Awwwh...didn't say "Byyyeee"

Got a good sounding motor, that's going to make a great wrecker.
Sweet looking wreck
Well done Jonathan !
Well a nut , Jonathan fixxed that little issue, good solid truck , well done ,
You make it all look so easy. How many hours do you have in the diagnostic and repair?
As always great video, thanks for sharing Jonathan and stay safe.
Jonathan can fix anything!
THANKS fer postin lad. Ya just made me Sunday mornin that much MORE enjoyable EH !!
WAVIN a hand EH !!
LOVE THE 440!!!I have one on a78 gmc 4x4,very capable little wrecker thanks to ERNEST HOLMES.enjoy your content always!
Just before 6:21, you mention two cycle gas. Yessss!
A good remedy for quiet, been sittin' awhile engines.
It was nice to see the hole in the gas tank. Sometimes when the truck makes the decision for you it saves a load of time and keeps the fun going.

fantastic video - thankyou
Blend doors suck on those. I unplugged the one on mine that was doing that. It was the one on the passenger side by the blower motor.
Somebody did a real cob job on the wiring on this truck. What a mess.
Made my day seeing Nanna back running the Kat Scan again.
You did a great job.
Jonathan W saves another one!

She breathes and sounds pretty smooth. That's a good thing.
Morning john
I have a 94 with this transmission. Had problems when putting in a new clutch. We had to replace the fork and pivot ball it moved on as well as the slave cylinder. The wear parts were worn enough it did not work until we changed those parts
Great job there. 😊
Just gotta love geezers with cigarettes hanging out or their mouths, made a good living off old lungers
Looks like it will be a good truck.
Nice truck
I wondered if one of those switches was a kill switch. Thanks for the video!
👍
Someone should of been shot for the design of the blend door system
Back in1978, we got a 1964 Ford F-350 with the same Holmes bed on it,, darn great wrecker...
I still to this day use my ole holmes 440 sling bed!! Best ever built!! Of course I use a 4x4 block to keep from damaging those damn plastic bumpers! LOL
Another great video
Great deal
Excited to see what you turn it into.
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
score on that one nice truck

Just rebuilt my 93 Silverado 5.7. Stuck the 93 Corvette cam in it which maxed out the heads n gave me another 45HP.
Good Trucks to have.
I'm just saying Jonathan I believe every gas-powered record should have a 454
Not saying it's little brother the 350 is not perfectly capable
That's purdy good old wrecker, doesn't look too bad, matter of fact, it's looks purdy clean

Try getting a cat scan to stop that knocking noise. You’re a mechanical genius, but the cat has other special powers. 😅.
It continually amazes me how much knowledge you have in your head 🙂
I recognize that tap, tap, tap of the blender door, yessir

"5 switches and none of them go anywhere good"... LOL!
Surprised you can't find the mid to late eighties straight akle Ford's up there some guys down further south are still running them.
Are you sure that's the blend door making that noise? It sat so long I think a wood pecker moved in.😄
Check crank sensor. That loose bolt??????❤
Those fuel pumps…. How many have I done lol
That door thing happens to all those ninety somthing models got love it. its a runner though.
Awesome always cool stuff always thanks 😎
That blend door is Morse code it’s giving up hahaha
Yes, sir I totally agree with you regarding that wiring that has been added on. Take it all out if it is not the wiring that the truck came with from the factory remove it.
Had the same problem it was the module in the distributor
As someone who lives in the Northeast I'm always astonished how rust free everything is down there.
You're the eternal optimist, Jonathan.
If the oil sending unit is bad ,,,it won't run....been there on tbi many times

Them blind doors 😂😂 so many trucks do that just name the truck thumper turn the radio up loud keep on trucking
You can do some amazing thinks with a Holms twin boom that can't be done with a single boom.
Nice Bid of Deduction Johnathan. 👍
Usually the fuel pump hoses in the tank rot and the pump runs and pours the gas back into the tank.
I think he’s got a wood pecker in the dash. I got a half ton same year model that does the same thing!
My blend door does that to every time I get in the heat has to be turned off😊
In the state of Ohio it is against the law to use compression fittings on your break lines
This one was a lot less drama to get started than the 56 Studebaker.
