Miku worked in the @Home maid cafe in Akihabara and she was one of the star performers, and was well thought of by her regular customers, but she had bigger ambitions. (so the angry maid in the After Life video is not auto-biographical) The 3 part Miku documentary on the Ohrenje YT channel will give you all her background, and there's 4 other band member documentaries on that channel as well. For slower songs, find the acoustic version of Puzzle, and check out Daydreaming, About Us, Memorable, Awkward, Page, Smile, and Ooparts.

If you're looking to slow down then I'd recommend "About Us" (Official Live Video), or if you want really slower, you have to check their acoustic work. Their acoustic concert they streamed is excellent. They recomposed many of their songs for an acoustic set and streamed it at Christmas 2021. "Catharsis" is great, but I just love Miku's voice singing lead in the song "Sayonakidori" acoustic.

Ohrenje is the finest Maidiac documentary filmmaker in the fandom 🇫🇷 Hooray for Ohrenje!
Start with Saiki and we’ll watch along with you. Add your comments along the way! Should take you 30-40 minutes.
After 6 songs, you are still so early in your journey ❤ Remember that typical okiyujis have around a 20 song setlist. And the crowd chants and sings along with every single one. And then everyone leaves crying over the 20 other songs they were hoping to hear but didn’t.
The point is that after a half dozen songs from most artists, you’ve heard all of their sounds and styles, but you haven’t heard all the songs they’ve made with that formula.
Band Maid is not the typical band. Here are some songs that will have you scratching your head asking how the same girls who delivered “DICE” today also created these:
    “Influencer”
    “Wonderland”
    “Secret Maiko Lips”
    “Rinne/Reincarnation”
    “About Us”
“From Now On” (this is the song you want to use to introduce your husband to the band, hehe)
    🤘🏽

The time signature is stll 4/4, they just put the "first beat" emphasis in a different place so it sounds like a different time, at one point its 1 23 1 23 1 2 which just adds up to 2 lots of 4/4, but now you have 3 "first beats" instead of the usual 2. If you want to see a band completely mess with 4/4 even though still in it, try Meshuggah, it's mind blowing.

Miku's lyrics read like poetry. Saiki has written for three songs. But Miku & Kanami have become a writing team like Lennon & McCartney. It's not that Miku didn't like the treatment she got at the cafe. She won an idol competition. She tried that for a while, but wanted to parley that into her dream of a Band of Hard Rocking Maids. It almost went wrong though. If 'Thrill' hadn't gone viral they were going to fire the musicians and turn the two singers into DANCE-MAID. Miku & Saiki craied, "We didn't come t Tokyo for this!". Fortunately it all worked out.

Band-Maid is very "Bass Forward", when the band first started, Miku couldn't play guitar, so as she was learning while on the job, in order to fill the areas of their songs that Miku's guitar "Should Be", MISA was asked to step forward. Now that Miku is a very accomplished guitarist, MISA still gets highlighted as it is now the Band-Maid Signature. Many times, when MISA starts wandering her fretboard, Miku will drop back and cover what would normally be considered the bass line, tying into Akane's drum kit.
On the "Rhyme", you have Miku to thank for most of that. She writes the majority of the lyrics for their music. She is actually considered a very good poet by many Japanese fans.
Miku worked in the Maid cafe, and she actually left because she won a contest to be a part of an "Underground Idol" group. She didn't like the music she was singing with that group, (Lil Cumin - J-Pop), so when the group disbanded, she submitted her idea of a "Maid Band" to Platinum Productions, and got signed to their sub-group Platinum Passport and told to go ahead and form her band.
Slow songs, Daydreaming, Page, Anemone, About Us, Memorable, Wonderland, At The Drop Of The Hat, Endless Story, Time (A Miku Showcase), Manners (Not really S-L-O-W, but a good slower song), Rock in Me (Another not quite slow and also another Miku Showcase), Matchless Gum, The Acoustic version of Sayanakidori, (Another Miku showcase), Acoustic version of Catharsis, I'm sure I'm missing a few more, but I'm sure the others will chime in.
    NOW!!! About the song DICE.
The song's basically about taking risks, seizing opportunities, putting in the work to get the rewards. Roll the dice. Take your shot.
The doll is just a doll. It's harmless - in fact, that's kind of the point. The doll is a simulated person, it's safe. The girl is blindfolded, in the dark, holding the doll for comfort. She's sheltered. At the end of the video the girl abandons the doll, lifts up the blindfold, steps into a blinding light that represents the uncertainty and opportunity that she's been hiding from.
This song is a call to arms. In Japan they have a sub-culture of shut-ins, people who are either unemployed or under employed who basically won't move out on their own. They stay in their parent/grandparent's home basically playing with dolls or video games, instead of getting out and living life and trying to better themselves. This song is calling them out. Challenging them, "Are you gonna stay in there playing with DOLLLLLLLLLS like a little kid? Or are you going to stand up take off the blindfold, leave the dolls and games behind and step out into the real world?" At the end of the video, the girl puts down the doll, takes off the blindfold and steps into the light.
It's called Hikikomori in Japan and is defined as: "pulling inward, being confined", also known as severe social withdrawal, is total withdrawal from society and seeking extreme degrees of social isolation and confinement. Hikikomori refers to both the phenomenon in general and the recluses themselves. The concept is primarily recognized only in Japan, although similar concepts exist in other languages and cultures. Hikikomori have been described as loners or "modern-day hermits". Estimates suggest that half a million Japanese youths have become social recluses, as well as more than half a million middle-aged individuals. - Definition from Wikipedia
    Hopefully that formatted properly.

You had some questions, and these are my answers:
    1. Yes, we could (and have been) telling you about the band, but there is no substitute or watching (and reacting to) @Ohrenje's fabulous series of documentaries about each member. You should start with Saiki, as that's how he's laid it out. They are not your typical documentary - they are engaging and will only increase your appreciation of this miracle band. 2. YES, bring hubby into the fold! He may be mad that you took this long, but better late than never. In fact, Dice would have been a great "welcome to Band-Maid" song. Other good ones though IMO are Real Existence OFFICIAL LIVE, Don't You Tell ME Official Live (you may have done that one), Puzzle Official Live or the Blooming MV. 3. Slow songs - you should start with Daydreaming MV for the best Power Ballad ever written - no subs for it but hubby has some Japanese and the music is too good not to love. Others include Smile Acoustic (no official but if you search for it you'll find it - it'll be okay, don't worry), also Catharsis acoustic from their channel, and there is also About Us and Memorable just to name a couple more. HOWEVER, if you do either of these you MUST know the back story to get the full effect - so just do a youtube search for "Saiki's MC/ About Us" and you'll see a RUclips video with English subs. Watch that first, and THEN their official video for About Us. For Memorable, before you watch, keep in mind that this is their first big tour after COVID and they were touring the USA to pretty much all sold out shows. The ladies weren't really ready to believe that we'd all show up though, and the crowds absolutely blew them away. I was at one, and the crows were INSANE!!! The song Memorable was written directly to their fans so think about that when watching. Smile and About Us were also written directly to their fans. Makes me almost tear up just thinking about it. I'd ramble on some more but will spare you. Great to see you getting into Band-Maid!!!

Lanae, I always say that Akane and MISA are the most intuitively brilliant "rhythm sections" in rock. Kanami's compositional talent, non withstanding, she not only allows, but encourages MISA to compose major parts of the song. This adds so much to the "Band-Maid sound". Attention all hard rock bands, if you want to create your "sound" incorporated the creativity of all your members in composing the music. This democratic process in songwriting will insure buy-in to your songs and probably get a better effort during the performance of the song. These five talented young Japanese females are leading the way in how to create music and a unique "sound" for a band.

I've never heard that Miku left the Maid Cafe due to mistreatment or any other negatives - she did, however, abandon her fledgling J-pop Idol career (as a member of Lil' Cumin) as sh realized it was taking her in a direction that did not interest her... btw, if you appreciate BM's lyrics and how they seamlessly transition between languages and manage to rhyme, it's generally thanks to Miku who writes the majority of the band's lyrics - while barely speaking english herself

  • @chrisegbertky

I'm not sure another basis like MISA. She really is a lead bassist. She never just lays down a bass line. She jumps around supporting the vocal harmony, playing counterpoint to the drums or playing a complex "solo" hnderneath Kanami's solo and riffs, etc.All in one song. I think she is one of the most remarkable bass players around.
