Using a Windows Phone in 2024...

- This Windows phone was SOMETHING ELSE back in 2012, man. I thought it was so cool that my Xbox profile was so seamlessly integrated into my phone. Ultimately, it had poor support and just wasn't a great OS, but I still really enjoyed this phone! Let's take a trip down memory lane and explore this HTC 8x here in 2024.

Who else used to have a Windows phone? I was a huge fan of the Xbox integration back in the day
I have a few. First was a brand new one in 2012/2013, it was a lumia 520 for a very cheap price I remember. It was however annoying to pay 1 euro each time you wanted to download a game from the store, really annoying but I had to if I wanted to play a game like flappy bird, angry birds 1 or even fruit ninja. Oh yeah, also asphalt 7, good old times. Before that I had a old friend who had a windows 7 phone, a Samsung if I remember right. After the 520 I had a: lumi 1520 (my favourite of them all) then some microsoft lumias like the 640 xl(?) and something else I can't remember. I updated my lumia 1520 even to windows phone 10 but after that sold it as you couldn't do anything with it. So I had to go back to android at the time. Yes, you had whatsapp and stuff but those were really bad apps or you had to even pay for them, very sad that they decided to be doing business like that. If they kept on improving the store and asked developers to make more games and stop asking commissions when making a game or app, the windows phones would still be here. But Micorosft didin't have to buy Nokia, that was also a very big and expensive mistake. The Microsoft phones were never good like the Nokia phones. I
Loved the Xbox integration for older stuff
Me I used it right up until 2019 when they ended support. The Lumia 520 was the most popular phone.
Used mine for Xbox achievements in games like Minecraft, fruit ninja, etc
Specifically the lumia 900
Used to have Angry Birds Seasons on it which isnt available anymore and im so pissed i lost the phone
Trevor's phone from GTA 5
That's because it is!
Your not wrong
😂
Trevor was a true chad for using a WP.

The one thing I could appreciate is the animation windows when shifting windows and scrolling. Felt so smooth and was a nice aesthetic.
Fun fact, you’ll notice that when you scroll in Android, when you hit the bottom of the page, it doesn’t bounce back like it does in iOS. It stops suddenly. (it is possible this has changed in the latest version of android- I haven’t tested). The reason behind this is interesting. Apple had patent the scrolling, bounce back animation. Steve Jobs is already mad about androids, so didn’t wanna bother and get another reason for Apple to sue them. so android simply doesn’t include the scrolling animation.
But if you’re observant, you’ll notice that Windows 10/11 (and even Windows 7 and 8) as well as Windows phone 8 and 10 do feature the scrolling bounce animation. Why didn’t Steve Jobs go after them? You might ask?
Well, Microsoft had a different idea. They just made a deal with Apple and paid them for the rights to use the iOS animation.
Interesting huh? 😂 The more you know! 😅
May Allah (S.W.T.) guide you and bestow upon you His Blessings; Ameen.
P.s., Free Palestine! 🇵🇸
@@NazmusLabs Yes animations are important for software. Our brains are designed to see something as having weight and inertia to it. That's why apple has succeeded with their smartphones. Using an iphone feels natural. Everything you do has weight to it, at least visual.
@@antonioZaRasFiNaLbOsS ah yes, i love the weight of apps crashing, and memory being misallocated on a 2021 iPhone model. Satire aside, iPhone and Android are cancers, simply built to support each others monopoly.
IOS has ease of use and UI, and AndroidOS has practical use, is open to editing settings and using jailbreak kits, and is lower quality due to not everything being supported by the manufacturers.
@@NazmusLabsat least in android 12+ it stretches, and that's good enough for me
@@NazmusLabs, some of these skins had "bounce" animation like TouchWiz or TW Nature. It's so subtle tho.
Obviously there was some Xposed mods* like XuiMod that has an ability to implement this animation.
* Literally Magisk modules of 2009-2016 era, created by "rovo89". These modules just overwrite to your system files so these mods could be blazingly fast.
I think Windows phone could genuinely have a chance at revival if they brought over WSA to run android apps like how you can on Windows 11. Personally, that would be amazing for me.
They should bring it back Fr
Issue was WSA fragmented and got memory leaks over time, just like Android phones still do but Windows Phone didn't.
search project andromeda they already tried that
I bought windows phone just so I could earn Xbox achievements on it. There was its own version of Minecraft. Plus a bunch of spin off games like hit man, assassins creed etc. it was pretty fun. I ended up completing like 20 windows phones games 100% achievements that still appear on my Xbox profile even though windows phone is shut down. You can’t earn achievements on them anymore
That's awesome, I didn't even realize that. I just thought it was SO cool that I could see my xbox avatar and achievements on my windows phone 😂
I was gonna buy one if you could still do achievements lol. What’s your gamertag?
For the longest time it was the only way to play Halo Spartan Strike.
It’s seriously amazing just how smooth this OS operated for 2012 as well as how clean this OS still looks. I know a majority of Android phones of the same budget ran far worse than Windows Phone. Super cool seeing the retro Xbox 360 dashboard style natively on that phone app. I always wanted a Windows Phone back in the day to differ myself from the crowd but it unfortunately left the market before I had the opportunity to give it a shot.
I had a Lumia 521 as my first phone, I stuck with windows phone till it died as Windows 10 mobile, but by then I had a Lumia 950, it was a unique experience for sure.
I had the 950 as well. Great phone with a terrible selection of apps. Balmer dropped the ball.
@@likoetsvp there was a lack of apps but the secret was the gold mine of good third party apps if you looked hard, mytube was freaking amazing it was no ads RUclips with video downloading!
Unfortunately if you didn't know about these apps you would have a harder time.
Such a shame they didn't try harder honestly, wasted potential. From a company that can afford the L too, there definitely could've been a time line where Microsoft phones are still relevant in 2024
I had one around 2015. What really killed it was the lack of apps. No RUclips was a dealbreaker.
WTF no RUclips?
No youtube app. Need to use browser. Almost all social media app are not present on the store@@SouthBayLA1310
@@SouthBayLA1310 There was a RUclips app, but it didn't act the same way it would on iPhone or android. It just opened the web browser.
@Shekina246 there was one I used to use that also had a Downloader. There were a handful of apps I found cooler alternatives on my windows phone, but yeah for the most part none of the games or apps were good
@@Shekina246 so its basically just a Kindle fire
I loved my windows phone, I used a lumia 1020 through the end of highschool and into college from 2013-2015 and it is still my favorite phone I've ever used. The only reason why I switched is because as I grew older I started to need access to banking/school apps that weren't available on windows phone. It was a great conversation starter, a lot of people didn't even know about windows phones at the time and assumed I was using some weird yellow android. It was extremely common for a friend to recommend an app/game only for me to find out I couldn't get it on my windows phone, luckily it was mostly social media apps that I didn't use anyways or obscure indie games that hadn't been ported yet, all the essential stuff like instagram, whatsapp, popular games, and even Vine were available. The cameras on Nokia Lumia phones were insane for the time, especially my Lumia 1020 with its 48 megapixel shooter. It sounds like nothing today compared to the 200+ megapixel sensors in modern Samsung phones, but the 1020 was released at a time when Samsung was bragging about how big the 13 megapixel camera in its newest Galaxy Note was. I feel like Microsoft was really onto something back then with their phones, and if they weren't so late to the smartphone game they would still be producing phones in 2024.
came to this video because i randomly had memories of this phone. wanted to be different from everyone else as well lol. but i always thought the layout was really cool
Back in 2014 I got myself a Nokia 1520 windows phone. It felt weird at the beginning not having genuine Google apps but as I got used to it by finding workarounds and I've started to really appreciate it. My previous phone was an LG 4x which was a nightmare with all the lag it carried, ont the other side the WP interface was as smooth as it could be with it's nice animations and slide ui's, I never felt lag or delay. Also developers in my country were trying to help this operating system by creating apps mostly of the media streaming type. In 2016 the motherboard got burned and by that time windows phone was dead. I really miss that phone to be honest and wish they made it work.
daily driving one myself, has discord and reddit apps working so that's all i really need lol
I still have a Lumia 550 (Windows 10 Mobile) lying around which I got in 2016 just to try it out. I was pleasantly surprised. It was something different compared to Android and iOS. Sad that MS didn't stick with it and pulled the plug. My main driver though was a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
I got a Nokia lumia 1020, when I was 14, it has always been my favorite phone.
I used to have a nokia windows phone that I got for my birthday in 2015. It was fine as my first phone but the lack of apps like snapchat was really annoying as a 13 year old kid. It unfortunately got stolen in 2016 from my shorts that was laying on a chair next to a swimming pool, while I was swimming. This was in the middle of the day on Crete or Rhodes I believe. I then "upgraded" to a sony xperia m5 which had all the apps I could want with android 6, but software sucked and I wasn't able to update it at all at some point due to errors. It constantly froze and was a piece of junk in comparison to the nokia.
The most loving Mobile Operating System ❤️
I still have my Nokia Lumia 520 with Windows. and it still works and no battery problems, I never had a problem with the OS or the phone
Windows Phone with a dark theme in 2010-2012 was WAYYYY ahead of its time, SubhanAllah!
i remember making my xbox 360 avatar on my windows phone lol
Bro this phone was ancient even on 2015! You should 've showed a lumia 950 or an 930 at least.
Best cameras and Cortana was way ahead of the competition. Also I preferred the windows maps (Nokia based) to the google ones. The best OS till then, together with the Blackberry OS
If you displayed a similar android phone from the same date I doubt it would work that well
One of the best phones I've ever had was a Lumia 520.
In 2020 it had only 512MB of RAM and yet it did absolutely everything I wanted the fastest.
I loved the interface. Why?It's simple and fast.
The games on there ran so well and looked so good for a 2012 phone.
Edge too was still good at that time and yet again, the fastest answer was from the Nokia garbage phone.
I remeber how it even had a RUclips client.I absolutely fell in love with it and regret that I didn't jailbreak it. It died in the most horrific ways possible. Dad bent it in an argument.
The killer thing for me was how it had a Word app and always ran well.
Compare that to one of those Android phones which are utter landfill now because no other reason than Google Play Services.
..
So the phone used in gta 5 is a Microsoft phone right the interface looks the exact same
Yes and no. Trevor uses a Windows Phone, but for legal reasons Rockstar Games couldn't call it that. So they call it an iFruit Phone instead
I wonder if you fix the time if it will work better. I know on windows a bunch of certificates go out of wack with the wrong date and time set.
I always wanted to try a Windows phone back in the day . Never got one .
Well now you can get an old one on eBay for like $50 😂 (not that it’ll do you much good these days)
Always wanted one of these Windows Phones lol, loved how they were basically a pocket Windows PC you could carry around
Abandoned hardware/software feels so weird to use. I pulled this old dvd player that featured Netflix and RUclips on it, and I plugged it into a CRT TV from 1997. It worked, and it let me watch Netflix but it was the Netflix with no updates since about 2015. Really weird. Felt pretty cool watching Across the SpiderVerse on an old TV though.
The beats audio turns on as soon as you plug any headphones it's badass
If they still made it, I'd probably get one. On a smaller screen, it seems cluttered, but on a modern phone, it would be fine. I love the simplicity, the minimalistic approach.
I've got a Lumia 920 that I use as a pocket video camera every now and then. Solid device still.
Microsoft were onto something with this especially considering how long it's held up.
Nokia built a lot of the windows phones, so it checks out.
@@russellzaunerMicrosoft owns Nokia
my dad broke his
I fell in love with the Windows Phone interface. The fun you get from playing with those squares though wears off quickly. After I had done my bit, I thought 'right - let's get some apps on this thing'. Ok, no Facebook, no Instagram, no RUclips, no Chrome, no BBC News, no WhatsApp, no Google Maps... ahh, TripAdvisor, iMDB and Shazam... that's not too bad. Ok, none of my favourite games are on this thing. Let's connect it to my Windows PC... 'error'... ok, try again 'error'.
Yep, this phone was terrible. Great interface though.
Honestly these windows phone really had potential and I really wish I could see what they could have been today if they stuck around
This was my favourite phone back In The day live and still do it feel so good
Admit it or not, Windows phones with limited hardware gave buttery smooth Ui experience.
Also those animations 😮
@@Ayushrider877 Agreed
I really miss Windows Phone. It worked so good and had so much potential. It was really fast even on cheap phones.
The windows phone is probably my most nostalgic smartphone. It was my first smartphone I got in 2015 and it was the Nokia Lumia 630. I love that main screen with the customizable windows and custom background.
I got them when they first came out. I had like 5-6 different ones, I still have my Verizon 929 with Windows Mobile 10 on it. I loved having Xbox on phone, not needing an app for it. And BTW, I have over 112K gamer score :)
Still today, I like Windows Mobile 10 better than Android, so I have a Loader on my S23 Ultra that makes my phone EXACTLY like Windows Phone 10 including live tiles and the app menu. You would swear it's a WM device.....
Dang, I wish the windows phone still worked I could have easily gotten a few hundred thousand gamerscore
launcher 10 is what Dave's referring to.... it's awesome. I use it on my android device as well. I even downloaded the "uno calc" app to have the original windows phone calculator too. I'm windows 10 mobile for life. Android and iOS are both crap.
@@LanitaYT There are some games in the Android store that will get achievements, I think Minecraft has them... In case you didn't know, Microsoft killed achievements from Windows Mobile/Phone. So even if you get a WM phone with games, you won't get points for the achievement.
@@yamafanboy Agreed, Got an Android device because WM was killed off, and lived with it for a week, totally hate the OS, found Launcher 10, paid for the live tiles, runs exactly like WM, apps are easy to find, I've been through 3 Android devices now and been using it all the time...
I bought one in about a year ago because I thought I could use it as a mini PC which was not possible but I found a really weird side on the Internet I think it was from India and from there I could get all kinds of games up and running Batman Rayman hitman and some other games but for now I’m using it as a night stand but it was really fun to mess around with😂 and it is such a shame that it is not here anymore due to the lack of apps support I hope it’s coming back some sunny day with a vengeance🤘😎
The windows interface wasn’t bad, it’s just nobody was supporting it and it. I still use a windows theme launcher in my Android
I remember this 😢
I still have my old Lumia. I loved that phone and it was really good in my opinion. And of course the Xbox Connection was great. It still serves me well here and there when I have to use it, wish they would continue that phone
Windows Phone was absolutely amazing back in the day, it was the first HD screen phone I ever had, it WASN'T slow like iOS after a few months of use or early android even after a year, had a great interface and great consistent connection to cell towers. Above all else: it had all of this and was INCREDIBLY cheap which was great for me. It also did the one thing software engineers at these phone companies could never pull off: UI consistency. I miss it dearly. The closest thing I have now is postmarketOS/Ubuntu Mobile and as much as I love it and its infinite possibilities, it just doesn't feel the same...
The Phone OS was absolutely amazing on a Lumia phone, especially when they came out with Windows Phone 10.
Unfortunately it still didn't have much support. The support and apps it DID have were pretty good but it couldn't compete with iOS/Android.
Which sucks because honestly I felt the OS was better than both of them.
Windows Phone was a missed opportunity for Microsoft. They owned the desktop OS market and they could have extended it to the mobile market and even had integration between the two. Apparently the executives thought smartphones were a fad and didn't want to invest more into it. They had some of the best cameras on the market, especially after pairing with Nokia.
The interface of Windows Phone, I loved. The live tiles just work with mobile. Yes, the X-Box integration was awesome. While it lacked apps (I blame the executives that didn't want to invest in it), the battery life was great and the browser was able to do most anything needed. My favorite one was, I believe, a 1520 or something. It had the large screen and it felt solidly built. I never had lag on that phone.
Windows Phone was arguably the most thoughtful mobile operating system ever created. WP7.5 Mango was the GOAT of all mobile OS.
Back in high school up to college, I was the only one who used a windows phone. My friends thought I was using a feature phone that had a touchscreen.
Thats crazy cuz when i was in HS, windows phone were actually getting hip and everybody started to have on.
It’s not edge btw it’s internet explorer
Edge wasn’t a thing until windows 10
I loved windows phone. The live tiles were amazing, especially when facebook and twitter was natively integrated into the system. It just sucks that they needed the support of other companies and those companies cut that off (to clarify: it sucks for me as a happy WP user. I know microsoft was charging a high fee to manufacturers and app developers didnt see the point of developing)
I had a Samsung Focus, Focus S, and a Nokia Lumia 920. Loved windows phone I just switched to Android because no one wanted to support it. I missed out on a lot of the vine era because of that.
I remember having the High end Nokia windows phone and with that camera lens I would take some amazing pictures. Better than the iPhone in 2014
I had a Nokia Lumia 800 and I loved it! Windows OS worked brilliantly on mobile with so much customisation. The worse thing about it was the severe lack of apps that everyone else was happily playing and using.
I got this phone in my hand, feels so much better with slim design and small form factor. Unfortunate ly the screen is shattered, i would fix it if could get my hands on spare which is hard
It went from like 6 different choices in phones/OS to now 2.
I had a HTC windows phone 8X and that honestly was one of the best cell phones I’ve ever had. I loved the UI it was so unique.
0:33 noticed a peanut butter jif
I still have my HTC HD-7. They killed Windows, both Apple and Google, they don't want another 3 operation system to come around dip into their pockets. Few yrs ago I saw Firefox phone on sale on Ebay. Samsung had their own os too for short while.
I miss my Windows Phone everyday :(
the windows phone really looks like the phones in gta v
still using my l930 as main phone
Honestly pretty nostalgic, I had a windows phone but was too young/dumb to know it was a Windows phone just thought this is the latest android at the time. Didn't even own an xbox so i never appreciated any of the gaming features.
I have always used iOS (other than a few androids which I instantly came running back to iOS from) but Windows phone has always looked really beautiful. The main thing I love about windows phone from what I have seen is customization. Android has WAAAAAAYYYYY too much customisation to the point it becomes clunky and confusing. iOS on the other hand doesnt have enough customization. Windows Phone has just the right amount of it.
I loved these phones. I couldn't reply messages on Google Plus.
But gps driving navigation was awesome. Network connection was always perfect. Music, videos, perfect.
I wish these phones were compatible with today's app market?
For me Windows phone still looks more modern than iOS and Android. Miss my Windows phone. Loved the original integration with Facebook twitter ect
I had Windows Phone installed on the HD2 and I bullied Microsoft into giving me the license key so I could actually activate it and use it properly. I loved that system, it's been over 10 years and neither Android nor iOS ever felt right
You can actualy still use the store, u just have to wait for it to reach your router because the os has processes constantly loading and working in the background as soon as the wifi connects, so when it said waiting, its in a queue, this happens on every android and some ios devices to, u can see this on windows computers also. Hope this helps
You should include the link to the video in your community post, it will help you get views 👍
I remember owning a windows phone. It wasn't so i could be the cool person, no it was so i could get achievements. I worked at Pax in Seattle one year and was chatting up a Microsoft employee. When i pulled out my phone to show him my xbox account his eyes lit up.
Muito obrigado, Avanco Social, pelos seguidores de excelente qualidade!
I feel like Windows phone could make a comeback I mean we did get a Google Pixel phone and now we have flip phones again but this time it's smartphones and there's foldable ones to. I would actually like to see if not just Windows can make a phone again but other companies as well
Windows phone was a good flex for a while, then I realised half the apps on android weren't on windows phone and apps like Facebook and others were so many updates behind.
My mom had one of these back in the day and I thought it was the coolest things, then like 6 months later no one cared
I miss this! Xbox could of hit the Mobile gaming market in a big way if they marketed this as an XBOX phone instead of windows
the interface was amazing and simple. good times.
I remember having that when everything used to work and i used to play classic subway surfers there all day long, i even had an Xbox 360 to do it with the phone 😢😢
I had three, the OG Windows 7 version, then 8, then 10. I still have two of these phones to play with. I thought Windows phone outlook app was the best, but back then outlook on iphone sucked.
Outlook looked nice, yes. I particularly liked how the calendar app looked. Like an old school blackboard. Simple and efficient. I loved it!
This was my first actual phone. Mine was blue and I hated it.
I had a windows phone, Back case broke and caused the antenna to snap every time I put it into my pocket. So many replacement antennas and about 5 charge port swaps later it actually died 6 years later
I remember my Microsoft Lumia. It had a great camera for the time. Even by today's standards.
I still have a blue one that looks like it was handed down to prisoners. Man that windows phone was terrible, then i bought the matt black windows one and it saved my life when a ceramic floor tile slid off a 2×4 and went straight for my stomach, i was using a hoodie sweater with the front pocket on it which is where i kept the phone and the phone took the blow for me, i gave it an honorable sendoff lol.
My mother used to have a Windows Phone. A Nokia Lumia with Windows OS or whatever the name of the OS was
I had the Nokia Lumia as well. I remember getting pretty frustrated with it sometimes, though I can't remember why now 😂
I would feel bad to any kid who was given this phone as their first, this phone looks like a nightmare
Yeah, I miss them. Loved the OS. Some of the third party apps were better than the first party ones. Devices were always buttery smooth, even on absolutely terrible hardware. Mixed with Nokia design aesthetic, and good cameras. Absolute bangers. I was sad to move on to Android.
You can still update it win 10 i updated my nokia Lumia 630 to win 10 recently and it works and store also works
Only certain Windows Phones can update to Windows 10 Mobile
I used to have a windows phone. I am so mad right now that it failed.
I wish someone that is dedicated enough to reverse engineering or maybe make some kind of server for this Phone just so the phone works again without depending on microsoft server..
Maybe no one will do that but I could be possible.
Excuse me? WDYM by "the windows phone does not exist anymore" I daily a microsoft lumia 950 and I also have my android phone running launcher 10 which is for the most part completely indistinguishable from windows mobile 10 with the one exception that all android apps are now available with live tiles using the windows mobile 10 interface.
I LOVED my Nokia Lumia 928 I even wrote part of a high school paper on it and had an amazing camera too
Xbox and Microsoft need make more Xbox phone like Xbox Phone 1 (or) XPhone 1 and Xbox Flip/Fold 1 (or) XPhone Flip/Fold (Miss that OS😢)
I used to dislike its OS because I didn't know how to... Now I want it
My first smart phone was the Nokia lumia 530 loved that phone
I still have my old Windows Phone and its in a good condition still
I’m pretty sure this phone or a newer model was advertised in the Xbox exclusive game Quantum Break
If they still made them I’d still have one. I loved my windows phone
I still use a windows phone for my businesses because they have never been hacked and I want to make sure that my costumers phone numbers and info are secured from any phishing.
It still looks so cool and ahead of time
who ever designed these phones really dedicated themselves in to making them beautiful.
Stil my fav all time mobile OS . Windows gave us a lot of inovations. It was very an OS very ahead of Android and iOS.
The camera is better than most androids even now tbh
This set up worked as a phone but man.... When they tried this with Windows 8, man that was horrible. Lol
