- Larry Bertlemann is pretty much The Godfather of style in surfing and in skateboarding. The rubber band man became famous for his newer aggressive style rapidly turning his board with his hands while maintaining a super low stance. Made popular by the Z-boys like Tony Alva and Jay Adams, the influence behind the bert slide was none other than Larry Bertlemann himself.
Larry was kind enough to take a phone interview with me as our pioneer guest for the new podcast segment! I was slightly nervous, especially being my first interview, but Larry can’t help but make you feel at ease. Thanks again for being on the show Larry, aloha!!

My influences, that is a hard one.
Jesse Owens is probably my biggest inspiration to always work hard through what ever the world throws at me. My influences in skating, probably has to be Mike Vallely. He always goes all in and he can skate just about all styles. And Stacey Peralta. OG skater, film maker, and a team manager of character.
Adventures in Skateboarding At 40 Plus my dad used to tell me about Jesse Owens, such a legend. Solid list!
Ray Barbee, Peggy Oki, Rodney Mullen, Marty Grimes, Vicki Vickers, Elissa Steamer are a solid tie for me.
Definitely Jay Adams, Duane Peters, and Larry Bertlemann. Every time I surf skate, I think about Jay Adams and Larry because of their reverts and carves. Duane Peters influenced me to try to bomb a half pipe. Failed miserably because I was scared, but if I can manage to just get really angry and not give a damn when I drop in, I can probably hit it.
Love Larry's style and how he influenced our surfing and skating back in the 70's. I was fortunate enough in the late 70's to watch (from the line up) Buttons, Mark Liddell and Louis Ferrera at Kaisers in Oahu when there visiting family. Those guys blew minds! They were doing stuff 40+ years ago that took decades to catch up to! Thank you for the post. Great interview!

I'm a skateboarder from the 1970s so the Bert slide was part of our daily skate moves. I was surfing Ala Moana one time and saw Larry out there with his easy to recognize big afro.
