xD "warm butter" that's good! I also used to, and still do, look up to Rodney Mullen. If the name "Rodney Mullen" were to amalgamate into one word it wouldn't be something we'd expect either like "Rulledney" or "Meynroden" but rather "Ingenuity" and we'd all be like "WHaat?!" Just like when we first saw him on VHS. But honestly he sounds like a super thoughtful and modest dude! That gnarly intensity towards his seemingly boundless dedication is just wild and inspiring. It'd be amazing to see Rodney over on Jonny Giger's channel!
Back then skateboarding wasn't that popular and nobody had really pushed the boundaries on what could be done on a skateboard until Rodney came along. He basically lead the charge on not only freestyle skateboarding but making a living off of being a professional skateboarder as well.
Parents back then especially weren't big on supporting their kids. People from that generation think having kids just means making little copies of yourself, and they didnt understand or care about their children having their own personalities, hopes, dreams etc.
Cracks me up, in most of Mullens vids, his wheels are tiny! 😂😂 He's thrashed them so hard they're worn down to like 35mm, he could have a thousand sets but ye can't beat a set broken in! 😂😂👍👌✌️✌
Rodney is singlehandedly responsible for getting SOOOO many kids kicked out of parks, closed schools, empty courthouse grounds, parking garages.... We appreciate your inspiration, Rodney.
zeroing in on the childs strengths is the best way to find their area of success, if he excels at something that is achievable and realistic then let he/she go for it. his dad was bein a bit of a knob but it helped to shape rodney so what do i know
Alexander The Great because these aren’t tricks that people can just do every time. They have dozens of attempts that go into them before they get the shot to put in a video, so it wouldn’t really be a good idea to do something like this in a competition

This guy right here is the GOAT of street skateboarding. I remember watching some of these clips on the old Tony Hawk games in the 90s and I was blown away back then and I still am today. He will always be remembered as the greatest of all time.
Absolutely loved those clips. It made a real connection with the skaters in the game. It's one of the reasons why I loved playing as Mullen and Mike V even though I didn't know them at all as a kid.
His creativity, his precision is undeniable. Even his name “Rodney Mullen” just sounds like a legend. The universe gave birth to a legend until the end of time.
@thelegend27 2.0 imagine where skateboarding would be now without Rodney. Would al the tricks he created be created without him? Perhaps the obvious ones. Ollie, kick/heelflip shoveit. I think without him skateboarding wouldn't be where it is today, still be doing basic tricks or just recently seeing the first impossible or something.
His dad's continued disapproval was a key factor in driving Rodney to pursue his dreams. If the Dad gave way too soon, Rodney could still have done the same stuff and maybe even better OR Rodney could've been complacent and content right away thus no more innovation or progression.
yeah 2 years after this comment daewon got into the hall of fame for skateboarding, he definitely was never under appreciated. everyone knew of his prowess. and since he got instagram his appreciation has only grew.
I never thought he was underappreciated. Don't get me wrong, I love Rodney, always will. But Daewon was also phenomenal, very well recognized in my opinion.
This got me back on my board!…26, married, just bought our first house, feeling stiff and now sore..but hey I just learned the casperflip! skating is just unadulterated fun. No need for drugs or anything. I started skating as a young teen, rebelling against society, and now its helping me grown as an adult. To me skateboarding is a time in my life when the whole world was in the palm of your hand. I wouldn't mind just going back to that time even if it was for a few hours. Cheers to you fellas, skateboarding and life!
I just started again too ! 15 years no skateboard then walked by a zumiez in the mall and found an enjoi "the bird" 8 in. Cruiser fit $59.00 and now I'm back at it again an loving it !!!!!

A strict father clearly but......He did bought his first skateboard, made him a shed where he could practice at all hours. Remember he was a dentist in a time when no one made money from skate yeah he was't Tony's father completely submerged in the skating world but nonetheless quiet supportive for the era and kind of person he (is/was) as described by his son
It's not only that his tricks are insane, but he seems to float effortlessly through the air, which sets him apart from a lot of the other greats. Even many of the best street skaters still aren't nearly as smooth.
Rodney is one of the few people on earth that when I watch him speak or skate, I feel incredibly uplifted and moved. I smile because I truly tell myself, my mind and my body that i want to learn from him. He's the best teacher anyone could ask for. #shoutout to the GOAT Rodney Mullen for teaching me how to casper flip when I was only 12.
As a late 80's kid, who was there for at the dawn of the Tony Hawk games that REALLY blew skateboarding up all over the world, I don't think there was a single kid I knew who would've named anyone other than Mullen as their favorite skateboarder. Obviously we drew inspiration and style from everything in those games, but Mullen was the guy everyone talked about. He was it, head and shoulders above everyone else. A true, unmatched legend. And seemingly a great guy to boot.
Actually wasn't trying to knock him. His freestyle loner years are the only way to attain that level of balance and oneness with the board. It's like he happily put himself through a Chinese Olympic regimen.
Andy Anderson isn't as OCD as Mullen. Carlos Lastra is really good too and put Anderson to the test in one of their Braille videos on here. Mullen is basically an alien from another sport who was forced to expand into street by his business partner and that's the only reason he had any impact on something people care about. Otherwise he'd still be doing spins in his garage or would've just quit and gotten fat and old in the 90s when his freestyle sponsorships ended. Remember Mike T for giving us Rodney Mullen.
there will never be a 'next' rodney mullen. there is never going to be another person to fill those shoes. I feel so lucky that we (skateboarding) got him, and not something else. granted, he'd have revolutionized whatever that would have been too, but he chose to skate, and none of us could ever thank him enough.
I am 44 and still skate regularly,Rodney is a big reason I always strive to get better. He was and is my biggest influence in skating and made street skating what it is today.
Not only was he a great skater, he was really down to earth and noble. I met him once in the late 80s at the Lakewood Mall in So Cal. He happened to be there when I went to buy my first Swatch. He was so friendly and attentive to all of his fans. Good dude
Roberto Terriquez dude I was there , when he performed his freestyle in the mall parking lot I got my tony hawk board signed by him that day, cleaning out the garage at my moms house I found that board! So cool to show my son his videos then to show him my board with mullens signature earned me some sweet dad points
Watching some of these skateboard videos I'm getting a huge wave of nostalgia. I used to watch all these videos back in the late 90s. I remember trying so hard to learn how to ollie and then one day finally getting it. It was so awesome
Couldn't agree more! Certain video parts always got me pumped, not just videos, a coue parts that got me stoked to go trash was Tom penny's menikmati and flips sorry vid parts, also tosh Townsend in sight unseen and emerica this is skateboarding, those parts still stuck with me even after 30 years old as of now
thanks mr mullen for creating the my favorite sport. unfortunately my ankle broke and i can no longer skateboard. now I build custom boards from my garage and try to help teach kids.
@Jamey Craig big ups.. I've been screwing around a bit on my board. Im just an ankle roll from destroying this damn ankle so it what is. I actually had a pretty cool thing happen. A few guys noticed my boards and invested some money into helping me get a small shop going this summer... We're just planning it out for now and this covid shit kind of set us back a little but nothing we arent overcoming.
Daewon broke his ankle super bad and can still get it! I shattered my right great toe sesamoid and 1st metatarsal and cracked my left great toe sesamoid and I still skate! It took me about 2 years to recover but I didn’t give up! Don’t give up bro
I feel you... I had to quit about 15 years ago because I snapped my ankle ligaments that never properly healed because I'm a hemophiliac. And still whenever I'm somewhere I haven't been before I'm scouting for spots and on holidays I usually try to find the local scene to hang out, watch and chat... if I'm feeling bold enough I'll pop a shuv-it, which is a pretty safe trick that I can still pull off. Quarantine has me reminiscing about owning a board though... I think I might just buy one just to ride around and see what's still possible.
When this man passes away... You better send him off with a 1000 Gun salute and build a museum about him, and preserve his body like that of the Egyptian pharaohs!! And all skaters of the world all do a darkslide all day long!
i remember being a 9 year old kid in the 90s watching rodney vs daewon and thinking it was the best ever... years later and it still is one of the best skate videos of all time.
i was 13 when i watched Rodney in 1995, had an ateam deck and was just blown away. thanks rodney, u are a hero, to so many people, whatever your dad thinks dude ;)

I could talk all day about Rodney Mullen. Firstly, can't believe the man who invented majority of skateboard tricks is alive today. But the man IS relatable, and yet one of a kind at the same time. He really is special.
I just looked up the definition of Autism: A serious developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact. If you have seen Rodney Mullen's Ted Talks, or his relatable and unique way of communicating in general, I would disagree that he has an impairment of communication. On the contrary, he makes more sense and is more captivating than many people I've spoken to. I then had to ask myself if that makes me autistic, and since neither I nor Rodney have ever been professionally diagnosed with that impairment, I get to the conclusion that he is just different. By being different and obsessed with skateboarding he moved into a realm of skill the majority wasn't willing to dedicate themselves to. It changes you to be possessed by a calling. Just because he's overwhelmingly sincere, excited and takes his time choosing his words, doesn't make him mentally impaired. It makes him cool.
I'm sorry but that is just a one sentence definition for a condition that (if you've known people with or have autism) manifests in totally different ways depending on the individual. Whether or not Rodney is autistic, 12 words isn't enough to describe how varied and complex this way of thinking is.
He was alone his early life, he loved skating and his dad drove him even more to prove he could do it and do it well. It's all here just watch the video. You would never tell this man he's impaired, he's gifted but you can't claim autism is the reason why.. That's a cop out demeaning all the hard work and passion he's contributed.
+Cameron Klorres why not, the average women spends way more time painting her face...or what is that actually called? make up...mmh...must be making this up, huh?
Rodney was always my favorite skater growing up in the 80’s. When he was with the Bones Brigade was the first time I seen him skate and it blew my mind.
The kind and soft way he talks is kinda like Michael Jackson. And here we have another guy with an extreme talent at an early age and who has a strict father figure.
Rodney Mullen was so far ahead of his time... well his moves then are still from the future even in 2020 people struggle to consistently land anything he does.

I'm from that life. It wasn't the best. Our pants weighed like 8 lbs. So then we switched to lightweight polyester, which would get holes from every fall. Just like skateboarding, our pants were a balancing act.
I'm from that era too. And contrary to what joshyboy said, it was the best. Having to buy every skate video we wanted. But also the anticipation of all the cool tricks, music, boards, clothes, shoes etc. It was a better time. Having to wait for the new CCS magazine to come out so you could order all the shit your favorite skater was rocking. Those were the days.
I remember playing the Tony Hawk games and being like yeah this game is fun, but these tricks are so unrealistic no one could actually do this. Then watching Rodney Mullen videos of him actually doing the tricks and my jaw just dropping.
Insane to look back on this. I grew up looking up to everyone in this documentary. Little did I know it was the start of a revolution. Big up to Rodney!
Rodney is such a gem. The most humble and lovely person alive and an absolute gift to skateboarding. We couldn't thank him enough. Just look at him in the 80s ... and now in 2020. Still doing his thing. Cause he loves it deeply and because it's his life basically. Where he belongs. His inner peace. Precious! I could watch him skate and talk for hours! He's almost an icon of the 80s stylewise. At that time freestyle was ... freestyle. In every angle topped up with the artifacts of the 80s in general. He basically looks like a school kid in the wrong element. But make no mistake. Something many of us miss these days. Ordinary people. Living in the given time. No need to stand out or follow some rules. Just doing what they love. More of that please. That he later transformed to streetstyle and shaped skateboarding into what we know today .. Rodney you are THE best!

A steam of warm butter ?
You got a like from Me for the rest of the comment.
The rest is on point.
“ Voice sound like a steam of warm butter 🧈 “
Just doesn’t really make sense to me
Or I just don’t get it , even a stream of warm butter is like hum,
I get what you’re trying to say but not what you actually said , either way ,
the rest still overcame that. 😏 👍
Mullen & DaeWon are definitely GOAT’s.
Idk who’s Thee GOAT
Skating is 1 of the hardest forms of sport & art to make that call, just because there’s so much opinion , but Facts are that Those 2 Dudes are Cold Creators
OG Innovators
Both are Original’s and Hard AF
xD "warm butter" that's good!
Absolutely well said.
What kind of a dad can witness that much talent in their kids and do everything in their power to get them to stop? Blows my mind.
Maybe it was reverse psychology? It made him push even harder and his dad probably knew that.
Lots of parents are like that
Back then skateboarding wasn't that popular and nobody had really pushed the boundaries on what could be done on a skateboard until Rodney came along. He basically lead the charge on not only freestyle skateboarding but making a living off of being a professional skateboarder as well.
It was like saying "I'm gonna play video games for a living" back then. It just wasn't a thing.
Parents back then especially weren't big on supporting their kids. People from that generation think having kids just means making little copies of yourself, and they didnt understand or care about their children having their own personalities, hopes, dreams etc.
I used to watch this documentary all the time when I was a kid eating pop tarts. Now I'm in college watching it still eating pop tarts.
Lmfao!

Cracks me up, in most of Mullens vids, his wheels are tiny! 😂😂 He's thrashed them so hard they're worn down to like 35mm, he could have a thousand sets but ye can't beat a set broken in! 😂😂👍👌✌️✌
what kind?
Fall 2019 and he still has the best dark slides.
check out Jonny Giger bro, top Swiss skater, probably best flat ground skater around rn

We appreciate your inspiration, Rodney.
So in order to influence my kid to become succesfull, disencourage, ignore and dismiss the kids passion as much as possible, got it!

To an extent yes because young ppl gravitate towards stuff they can’t do
tbh they'd probably be better off than if you coddle them. Hell, they'd probably be better off than if you just left them as well.
no
zeroing in on the childs strengths is the best way to find their area of success, if he excels at something that is achievable and realistic then let he/she go for it. his dad was bein a bit of a knob but it helped to shape rodney so what do i know
Some of the tricks he does don't even look physically possible, even though i'm watching them happen
My exact thoughts when I watch his skate videos. How the fuck do you kickflip to primo slide to heelflip out? Exactly...
I just seen the newer xgames. why is no one doing these trick anymore? Looks like skating has regressed.
@@AlexanderTheGreat1000 maybe they can't do some of these
I try to watch the board but it flips every which way and then they stick the landing. My mind cant comprehend
Alexander The Great because these aren’t tricks that people can just do every time. They have dozens of attempts that go into them before they get the shot to put in a video, so it wouldn’t really be a good idea to do something like this in a competition
Skating was all I had when my mom died. Rodney is and always will be my hero. I literally wanted to get good enough just to show him. He definitely gave me something to live for inadvertently.
Condolences on your loss of your Mom. Glad you found an outlet to help cope. We all need something. I'm too old to skate but enjoy learning about all this.
The Dark slide is still one of the best tricks I've ever seen to this day.

Tony is the iconic Pro Skater, cameras fawning while he's flying high. Rodney, nevertheless, is THE Pro Skater animated model: unreal, yet flawless, addictive, a living fever dream who brings us all together.
I bet you're good at writing reviews for things.
I love how you capitalize "Pro Skater".
This guy right here is the GOAT of street skateboarding. I remember watching some of these clips on the old Tony Hawk games in the 90s and I was blown away back then and I still am today. He will always be remembered as the greatest of all time.
dito! :D
Absolutely loved those clips. It made a real connection with the skaters in the game. It's one of the reasons why I loved playing as Mullen and Mike V even though I didn't know them at all as a kid.
He was my go-to character in Pro Skater! He's the best. And his special grind with the boom box was siiick.
His creativity, his precision is undeniable. Even his name “Rodney Mullen” just sounds like a legend. The universe gave birth to a legend until the end of time.
Me - “Yo Rodney, how many tricks can you do?”
Rodney - “Yes”
And, I'll Invent anther; Just give me a week, I'll get back-to-you on that! RM Kinda scary, like that!
Actually given how humble he is, he probably would say "eh, some".
I wish they had talked about that moment his father finally realized that it was a successful thing to pursue.
kidwave1 maybe he never did
Jacob L'Esperance he did. Watch bones brigade
I think daewon song is one of the most underappreciated skateboarders of all time..
Rodney Mullen !!!!
yeah 2 years after this comment daewon got into the hall of fame for skateboarding, he definitely was never under appreciated. everyone knew of his prowess. and since he got instagram his appreciation has only grew.
I never thought he was underappreciated. Don't get me wrong, I love Rodney, always will. But Daewon was also phenomenal, very well recognized in my opinion.
How couldn't he be? He was in the same era as Rodney.
He wasn’t marketed correctly. But today is a new day
I respect all skate people but Mullen should never be forgotten.

Cheers to you fellas, skateboarding and life!

man, I had chills all over my body when watching this. lovely documentary, Rodney is a genius.
Rodney's father almost ruined it all
+Mike Hunt If it weren't for his father, he would've been just like every other skater. He is a part of what shaped him to be so different, albeit not very supportive
+John Bush or maybe he knew that the opposite would happen...
BigKing Bud like Remy Lacroix

A strict father clearly but......He did bought his first skateboard, made him a shed where he could practice at all hours. Remember he was a dentist in a time when no one made money from skate yeah he was't Tony's father completely submerged in the skating world but nonetheless quiet supportive for the era and kind of person he (is/was) as described by his son
There are two types of people in this world. 1. People who wish they were Rodney Mullen. 2. Rodney Mullen.
99% want to be him. 1% is him. only him.

3. People who couldnt give a damn
I'd rather be Nyjah honestly. He's so rich and good looking. What an asshole.
It's not only that his tricks are insane, but he seems to float effortlessly through the air, which sets him apart from a lot of the other greats. Even many of the best street skaters still aren't nearly as smooth.
yeah people used to say they didn't like his style, i think his style is so sick.
I love it, “I just focus and you get good really fast” words a goat says
No one will ever be able to control a skateboard with such mastery as Rodney Mullen
Unless you lock yourself in a garage for a few years as a kid spinning in circles like a figure skater.
@@rm9308 Cold!
Actually wasn't trying to knock him. His freestyle loner years are the only way to attain that level of balance and oneness with the board. It's like he happily put himself through a Chinese Olympic regimen.
Andy Anderson is on his way.

I find Rodney so inspirational, not just with skating but with life in general.
I really hope his old man appreciates what he became he is one of a kind and like no other human on a skateboard
I hope he appreciates how close he came to robbing us of the greatest skater ever and modern skating as we know it! 😳
thanks mr mullen for creating the my favorite sport. unfortunately my ankle broke and i can no longer skateboard. now I build custom boards from my garage and try to help teach kids.
Just chill for a year no need to quit
@@sad_is_fiction nah.. My ankle is fucked. Trust me. I wish it wasn't but it is.
Rodney is the godfather of modern skating. He's the perfect person for the position too. Kind, intelligent, and highly skilled.
It’s not hard to realize that he is a genius and did what he was destined to do. And it’s a beautiful thing.
When Rodney enters a contest, he takes first, second, and third.
I can't believe it's been almost 20 years. He is just such a genius. His talent and intelligence is unparalleled.
Its so rare that someone has the title and just CANT lose it,definitly the best

Eh, whether he's autistic or not, defining people by whether they have condition or not kinda sucks.
I'm sorry but that is just a one sentence definition for a condition that (if you've known people with or have autism) manifests in totally different ways depending on the individual. Whether or not Rodney is autistic, 12 words isn't enough to describe how varied and complex this way of thinking is.
I hate all these keyboard doctors diagnosing someone with a condition when they don't even know the person in real life.
I LIKE HOW YOU ARE ALL TRYING TO DIAGNOSE HIM WITH SOMETHING. MAYBE HE'S JUST A PLAIN OLD GENIUS THAT FOUND HIS CALLING IN SKATEBOARDING
I literally watch this video all the time just before I go skate
Shaun Edwards couldn't agree more

Rodney Mullen is the best skateboarder by far in my opinion without him I don't think skateboarding would still be around as much as it is today.
Greatest Of All Time is an understatement 🏆✨
Rodney was always my favorite skater growing up in the 80’s. When he was with the Bones Brigade was the first time I seen him skate and it blew my mind.
The kind and soft way he talks is kinda like Michael Jackson. And here we have another guy with an extreme talent at an early age and who has a strict father figure.
rodney wasnt accused of touching kids, just touching their hearts in the ways of skateboarding. lets not forget this
Did you actually just compare Mullen to Michael Jackson. Wow!
aaron marriott Mullen IS the Michael Jackson of skateboarding so it sounded about right to me.

from the era or 4XL pants and tiny wheels
I'm from that life. It wasn't the best. Our pants weighed like 8 lbs. So then we switched to lightweight polyester, which would get holes from every fall. Just like skateboarding, our pants were a balancing act.
I'm from that era too. And contrary to what joshyboy said, it was the best. Having to buy every skate video we wanted. But also the anticipation of all the cool tricks, music, boards, clothes, shoes etc. It was a better time. Having to wait for the new CCS magazine to come out so you could order all the shit your favorite skater was rocking. Those were the days.
even before the tiny wheels, he saw them come and go
Giant purple pants, tiny wheels, trying that triple heelflip going .2 mph...ahh the early/mid 90s sk8ing.

This video changed my perception, which changed my direction, which changed my life. I wouldn’t be who I am without Rodney Mullen inspiring me at such a young age. The best dude to ever do it ❤️❤️❤️
