Hi, I am currently trying to decide between buying a $500 TV or getting a Quest 3 l. My main use case for them will be playing on my PS5. The Quest 3 seems like a better deal since its slightly cheaper and comes with additional features. I just have a few questions before I pull the trigger on my decision. 1. Does the Quest 3 die at some point or is the charging with this cable strong enough for me to play forever without needing to stop playing? 2. How would the quality compare to a TV in the same pricerange? (LED, 1080p, HDR, 55inch) 3. Is passthrough always on when playing games or could I turn it off like the apple vision pro? 4. What would be your recommendation based on your experience with the Quest 3? Sorry for all the questions, I just wanna be sure before I spend $500. Great video by the way!
I wouldn't compare Quest to such small TV, because even if you will sit very close to it, the screen still will be very tiny comparing to Quest, but quality will be better on TV. It would be better to compare Quest to projector. I have old 100" and I prefer to use Quest. 1. It never died in my case, but I have never played more than 10h in a row. I am not sure if it's possible for example to not sleep for a few days and play non-stop. Currently Quest tries to keep 70% battery level. 2. TV will have better quality, but it's hard to fully enjoy it on such small screen. 3. You can turn it on and off any time. 4. Much bigger TV or Quest. You can return it in 2 weeks if you don't like it. If you decide to buy it, with this #QuestAffiliate link you will get $30 to spent on games: www.meta.com/affiliates/AQd76SXyE You may think that you buy it just for PS5, but as soon as you discover how good VR games can be, you will use it for much more.

Upon opening Meta Quest HDMI Link, I get the message, "Plug in the USB-C output from your capture card to Quest." I recently purchased this new cable and attempted to use it with both Apple TV and Shield TV, but to no luck. although it appears that the cable is not identified, I am still getting electricity. Ive read these cables can be used to connect something like a Switch to an Android tablet, to use the tablet as the screen. Do you know which app it requires to do this?
Thanks for all the videos on this topic, been really helpful! I picked up this cable and it arrived today - only had a chance to test it with my steam deck so far. @@Thomas_Voland Sorry, see it now. One has capture card, the other does not. I assume the PD port on both cables always charges *towards the USB-C side*? (so "main" cable charges quest if you connect a power source to it, and the other cable "switch" cable, charges the device (switch, SD, etc.) if you connect a power source to that one)
Hi😃🖖 I was just about to play some flat-games like Metro Exodus, launched on my Windows laptop, and I didn't know how to achieve it in a better way. Will this cable allow me to play such games with good resolution? Does it work with Oculus Quest 2? I mean, I have a 360-degree camera, and I need to watch panoramas in VR to correct something while I edit them. Will it work?
It works on Quest 2 and resolution is 1080p (in 60 fps). External storage can be used only for things like watching movies and other content in apps like SkyBox etc.
Yes, that's why this is great for HDMI, and for USB-C the previous solution with card and special cable with PD. Hopefully I will also make a video about very small adapters HDMI to USB-C with PD.

So, this works for devices with native HDMI port/output, not not something like the Switch or the Steam Deck/Ally. You get the benefit of not needing an extra cable, but limiting the amount of devices it's usable with, right?
Yes, however you can use this with everything if you use also hdmi to usb-c adapter (before you need also hdmi to hdmi cable to use with everything, but everyone have it). Main difference is that you cant charge both devices, just one.
@@Thomas_Voland That is true, we discounted that the other device is using it's own HDMI (or USB-C/HDMI) cable too. So really 3 things with the "old" method :)

If you check comments in my previous video about capture card (it's the same chip) you will find opinions about using it with different equipment. Until now I saw only very positive feedback and info about not noticeable lag. But I am not sure what kind of processing is made in OBS and if it will be the same.

Hi, I have ordered by AliExpress over your link and I hope I get the right cable in the next six days. thank you very much for your work and for your help. I wish you a nice weekend.
I'm having an issue with the original set up, with switch dock w. PD to capture card w. PD. Every so often the video feed from my steamdeck will cut out and the video output display reverts back to the steamdeck's screen for a few seconds, then it just starts working again automatically. Do you know how or why this happens? I wonder if it's an issue where the charger cuts power to the switch dock, temporarily turning it all off. I'm not sure though. It's not super bad, but a bit annoying to happen while I'm gaming.
@@Thomas_Voland weirdly, connecting SD and Q3 to start with, then plugging the mains power in afterwards seemed to prevent further disconnecting. That is, with a sample size of one play session. Hopefully that's all that is required.
@@Thomas_Voland awesome, thanks for confirmation! Do we know why this happens then? It's odd as attaching the device to a already-powered dock is the standard mode of usage for a Nintendo Switch dock. Though I guess it's different as an OEM Switch dock can only be powered externally, whereas the Hagibis dock can also be powered by the host device. If there was some way to force the Hagibis dock into a mode where if only accepts external PD power and wouldn't use host power, perhaps with a mechanical button on the device, maybe that would prevent this video-cutting out issue from happening.

@@erwinvandenberg1815 yeah technically it should work but there is no sequential 3d support in the HorizonOS ATM, but you also don't have to convert everything in SBS if you decide to rip them, I decided to just keep the mkv 3d files as they are makes ripping extremely fast, you only need to use a compatible player for example I'm using 4xvr but I think moon VR does it as well

@@GeoPhilips I have both, and I confirm the original Hagibis capture card that Voland recommended (and that he also showed in this video) worked just fine with everything. So that is probably still the best overall setup, even if that setup requires an HDMI cable for some things like Apple TV or Xbox. The capture cable fits the bill in many scenarios, and I guess it depends on your use case. Both options work well with a laptop. Ultimately I was interested in using the Meta Quest 3 with my work laptop which is locked down -- and thus very difficult/impossible to use Immersed or other "streaming" options. Using HDMI or USB-C video output on the work laptop is not locked down (and also provides better performance/latency). I have been playing around with this for a while after I had found Voland's other earlier video which introduced side loading "USB Camera" android app before Meta came out with the official "HDMI Link" app. In conclusion, I'm happy that it works seamlessly and well. Would definitely use the Meta Quest 3 if I travel. I am more comfortable to use the Meta Quest 3 in a hotel room -- probably less comfortable using in public, e.g., at a cafe. AR glasses like the XReal or Viture are definitely less conspicuous and lighter weight, but the FOV and the display on the Meta Quest 3 is much much better.

How are you supplying power to the quest
@@GOODEUSMAXIMUS well ive tried this with my gaming pc, macbook, and nintendo switch. I put the hdmi part into my mac, connect the usb c to my headset.
I tried out using my caldigit ts4 thunderbolt 4 dock to the usb c power delivery port but it wasn’t charging my quest 3. Then I plugged in a random usb c fast charging block which i use to charge my phone into the power delivery port and then my quest 3 started charging.
Then on the display it shows 1920 x 1080 at 60fps and the display usually stays at 61fps. From the display settings on both my mac and pc, I can go up to 4096 x 2160. With the lowest I can go down to being 800 x 600 resolution.
Under 800 x 600, it shows some extra resolutions saying 2048 x 1080 (HiDPI), 1024 x 576 (HiDPI), 960 x 540 (HiDPI), and 800 x 600 (HiDPI) on my mac. Im not sure what those are but for normal resolutions there is 800x600, 960x540, 1024x576, 1024x768, 1280x720, 1280x768, 1280x800, 1280x960, 1280x1024, 1344x756, 1344,1008, 1440x900, 1600x900, 1600x1200, 1920x1080 (default), 3840x2160, and 4096x2160.
On mac you can also change the color profile and i put mine on standard sRGB which looks really good. For refresh rate your choices are 25 Hertz, 30, 50, and 60. It’s very useful as a large monitor and helps keep me focused.
I have my childhood home recorded using a insta360 one x2 360 degree video camera and I can open it up in the skybox vr player, and then bring up my home menu and open up the hdmi link, and it feels like im using my pc or mac back home. It’s really amazing.

After extensive experience with Dell Laptops and USB-C docking stations in company, where I work, I feel physical pain just by looking at USB-C cable connected horizontally and not supported by anything, let alone flexing/moving. I use velcro and dispensable rubbers for support cables next to Quest port. However this cable is so light that during my tests I didn't use anything.
Just use a 90 degree adapter and done.

(LED, 1080p, HDR, 55inch)
If you decide to buy it, with this #QuestAffiliate link you will get $30 to spent on games: www.meta.com/affiliates/AQd76SXyE

First you have to try without connecting power, to be sure that that’s really what causes the issue.
@@Thomas_Voland weirdly, connecting SD and Q3 to start with, then plugging the mains power in afterwards seemed to prevent further disconnecting. That is, with a sample size of one play session. Hopefully that's all that is required.
@@Shryquill this is normal, I mentioned this in many videos
@@Thomas_Voland awesome, thanks for confirmation! Do we know why this happens then?
It's odd as attaching the device to a already-powered dock is the standard mode of usage for a Nintendo Switch dock.
Though I guess it's different as an OEM Switch dock can only be powered externally, whereas the Hagibis dock can also be powered by the host device.
If there was some way to force the Hagibis dock into a mode where if only accepts external PD power and wouldn't use host power, perhaps with a mechanical button on the device, maybe that would prevent this video-cutting out issue from happening.

This is for 2D, not 3D. However quality with this setup will be good: YUY4:2:2 without lagging in 1080p.
I had the same question. Hope they support 3D in the future!!
@@davecomeau5719 they probably wont. For 3D you would need Double the bandwith, and also convert the HDMI 3D codec to something a quest could use like SBS, but even im not sure whether the HDMI Link app would support 32/9 ratio and also whether you have the option for the SBS mode for the HDMI Link App.
Youre better of just ripping them and watching them from an external drive or from NAS
@@Gamer-kn7fi Actually it should work as movies are 24 fps, so in a sense 3D needs 48fps, which is well into the supported range of 60fps. And ripping and recoding movies to SBS is so much hassle! Is there really no solution for 3D through HDMI/USB?
@@erwinvandenberg1815 yeah technically it should work but there is no sequential 3d support in the HorizonOS ATM, but you also don't have to convert everything in SBS if you decide to rip them, I decided to just keep the mkv 3d files as they are makes ripping extremely fast, you only need to use a compatible player for example I'm using 4xvr but I think moon VR does it as well
can you play psvr games in quest 3 by this?
PS yes, PSVR no.
@Thomas_Voland alright, ive ordered the cable, lets see how it performs
Ehh your link goes to the Nintendo schwitch cable which looks precisely the same way. But on receiving it it seems like it's a usb-c to hdmi, not hdmi to usb c, did I get the wrong cable???
My link is correct. Below is a link to a cable from the second setup, for devices which require charging. Maybe you have ordered this one?
I used the link to this HDMI TO USB-C CABLE WITH PD
If you are talking about this cable, which is for setup with a capture card, it means that you need the capture card for it. That’s why it is described as a separate setup, and that’s why I have explained in the video the differences between them and which one is better for which purpose. For one cable setup you should buy the cable which is linked on the top and described as “cable from the video”.
@ ahh damn thx for responding
So does it charge the quest 2 while using it with the new cable only? Or do i have to get a extra thing
@@fernandogone7880 With Quest 2 it works the same like with Quest 3
Can the cable be used to cast your oculus display to any tv?
No

Will this link nvidia shield to quest 3 for better quality ie Netflix prime etc
Netflix no, everything - it will be the same quality like in Quest browser, because now it's the only VOD which works great on Quest. Everything else will be better on Nvidia Shield (however someone had problem with MAX and Disney+, while everything else worked).
Hi. I ordered one and it arrived today. But I receive an HDCP error when I try to look at Disney+ or Max content on the AppleTV. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong? RUclips on AppleTV and content in my iTunes Library seem to work just fine. Thanks!
Maybe your TV Box is set to 4K, high refresh 🤔 is it the same on Apple TV app, Prime, Netflix?
@@Thomas_Voland I tried changing the video out on the Apple TV to 1080p HDR and 1080p SDR, but both didn't work with Disney+ or Max content. Netflix, RUclips app, my iTunes Library all worked fine in all formats (including the default 4k SDR). It's not a deal breaker. Still will definitely use it, but I'm glad I still have the original capture card and HDMI cable as that seems to be okay with HDCP. The joys of DRM! Thanks!
@@jeffliu70 I have the same issue with the iPad. Netflix seems to work fine but Prime video and Disney+ give HDCP error. That was a big use case for me so definitely something to be aware of. Not sure if the other capture card has the same issue
@@jeffliu70 thanks. That’s a big bummer for me because Netflix works anyway now on Quest and I was looking for a solution for Prime and Disney+
It's works on the quest 2 or not please? Good video 😊😊
@@Wnto971 it works with Quest 2 and 3
will this work with a ps5 to quest 3?
Yes. Just remember to turning off HDCP in PS5 settings.
Hi im getting only a black screen with audio that cuts in and out repeatedly.
I set ps5 to 1080, turned off hdr, quest mic is not muted, all permissions allowed, tried the usb both sides into quest, screen info on black screen is showing perfect capture 1080 at 61 fps.
Do you think i might have a faulty card? Thank you
In this case disable HDCP, it will solve the problem for 100%
@Thomas_Voland Yes. Works perfectly now. Thanks for the quick reply. Keep up the great work, Thomas :)
Does the cord also charge the vr while using it? The vr only as a battery life of 2 hours and it wouldn’t be worth it if I can use it only 2 hours of the day
@@shyguy8543 yes, there is charging
@@Thomas_Voland thank you so much I’ll definitely check this product out
@@Thomas_Voland question I just got it today but I have no idea how to set it up to show the screen in my vr. I just assumed you just connect the HDMI cable to the xbox and the C cable to the vr but nothing happeneds idk if I’m doing something wrong or if I need to install an app

So, just before I pull the trigger on one of these solutions. I would like to run Steamdeck and Switch content via the headset. I understand with the cable that's the subject of this video that I need to run via the dock for Switch but there is no such requirement with Steamdeck? It should just connect and go?
@@Toaster05 for Steam Deck this is the best, because you can charge (but don’t need to, only Switch needs power all the time) both at the same time: ruclips.net/video/Yw6t8gM4op8/видео.htmlsi=7gXLEVhQG3MKUsgU. Also this way you have USB-C on both ends, and not HDMI like in one cable solution.
@@Thomas_Voland I appreciate the reply. I will order the items from the previous set up then as it offers a bit more functionality. I very much enjoy your content. Thank you.
With a steam deck, unless you're on a flight or public transit you're likely better off just streaming using steam link vr, you can push higher resolution, up to 120fps and no need for any cables but simple usb-c charge.
Steam link vr for quest beta version 2.0.11 has 2D streaming option built in, perfect for steam deck use.
@@able_archer_ I tried steam vr for the first time today and it was pure potato vision. I have a pretty crappy isp router and I just don't think it's up to snot. I don't mind being tethered so much.
@@able_archer_ Thank you for that information. I can use this cable for HDMI devices to quest 3; and wirelessly use "steam link VR" for a Steam deck to Quest 3
Are there capture cards or cables that can do 120hz so that it would be possible to play something like fortnite on ps5 with 120fps???
Yes, but HDMI Link doesn't support over 60 fps.
@@Thomas_Voland Thank you for you answer. Keep up the good work you do!
I wanna ask you is there any way so I can show my quest 3 on TV through a wire ( not wireless) and not using a pc
No, Quest doesn't have any video output.
how much latency?
I don’t known exact number but people in comments saying that it’s very small. Someone wrote that just won in PUPG playing this way.
do we still use the USB camera app?
No, Quest HDMI Link.
@@Thomas_Voland thank you
