It's about 6:35 pace. My PR is 2:53:19 which is just about what she ran. This is questionably DQ material in my book though. If this were a larger race such as Boston or Chicago she most certainly would have been disqualified.

    • @shammycat3538
      @shammycat3538 5 лет назад +2

killashags yeah, I watched this race and she kept pulling her arm away from the younger girl at first maybe for that very reason. She won by such a large margin a DQ would have seemed harsh anyway.

To clear up the questions here of (1) “disqualification”, and (2) “The girl in blue LET the other woman win”… here you go:
    (1) The race committee did delay calling her the winner, but after they’d conferred they determined the winner was so far in the lead, that she would have won anyway… even if she had to sit down for a while and gather herself and then crawl to the finish line.
The official rule is the runners cannot be helped by any third party persons not running the race. If a fellow runner helps, it’s a judgment call for the officials to make. The rule says the official “may” disqualify a runner if they are helped.
When helped by a fellow runner, there can’t be an unsportsmanlike move that would give another runner an advantage… like tripping a runner, or if two runners are neck-and-neck, another runner shoves one of the two runners in the lead across the finish line, etc.
Also, a runner also cannot be aided in anyway by a fellow runner if it is definitively clear that the help changed the results of the race…. In this case, if there had been another racer thirty yards behind the leader, then the leader fell and was subsequently helped across the finish line, and the runner who was thirty yards behind finishes only seconds behind the winner who the received help, the runner who was thirty yards behind would be declared the winner.
    (2) Some people are saying the girl in Blue should have gone first across the finish line because in all fairness, she won the race.
And some people are praising the girl in Blue for “letting” the other runner cross the finish line first.
The FACT is, the girl in Blue was part of an elite high school group of girls running the marathon as a relay team and to serve as “Pacers.”
That means each of the high school girls, including girl in Blue, ran just a portion of the race, and then one runner would reach a point and the next high school girl would take off to run the next leg of the race, and so on.
In this case, the girl in Blue, only ran the last two miles.
Also, by being fresh, the high school girls were setting a pace so the leaders, in this case, know they are on track to meet their projected finish time.
For example, if a competitor has a goal of finishing in three hours, the Pacer will run at a rate that would put the competitor at the finish line at three hours. If the competitor is running at a pace faster than their goal, the pacer will let them know their new projected time… then the competitor determines if they are up for a faster time of if they should hold back.
The pacers also break the monotony, encourage the racer, talk to them, cheer them on (if the other runner prefers that). For the pacers assigned to the elite runners, the runner and pacers meet up before hand and discuss what the runner likes, don’t like, and any other issues that are important to the runner.
Soooo… to make a short story long, the girl in BLUE was the runner’s Pacer. She was not eligible to “Win” the race… at least not in that category.
The Pacers know the rules, she would not have helped if the finish would have been in anyway questionable.
But, my two cents says the Girl in Blue would have done the same thing regardless of the outcome for herself.

I had something similar happen to me. I was in a marathon and at about two miles into the race my legs were hurting and I felt miserable. I probably should have trained a little and maybe even quit smoking. But someone came by on a tandem bicycle and saw that I was in distress. I climbed on the back seat of the bike. We passed up countless runners. We stopped about a 100 yards of the finish line. I got off the bike, walked across the finish line to a ninth place finish. A few people complained, as though I were illegally aided. But most people could see that it was a case of sportsmanship.

Boy....... I had a marathon experience like that once, where after running 6:05 minutes pace for 22miles...... I hit the wall and it took me a death walk of hour and a half to cover the remaining 4.2miles......Boy, did that hurt or what. Afterward, I had to drive home.
I guess that sometimes you just have to keep going even if you are on empty.
