Vocal Coach Reacts | Rik Emmett | Triumph | Lay It On The Line | Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
Canada has produced multiple great trio bands and Triumph is yet another great example. Formed back in 1975, the group rose to the height of their popularity in the late 70s to mid 80s.
Known for their guitar driven music, the band also featured two great vocalists with frontman Rik Emmett and drummer Gil Moore.
In a career that has spanned over 40 years, the group has put out 16 albums. They have received 18 Gold and 9 Platinum albums between the US and Canada.
Lead singer Rik Emmett ended up leaving the band in 1993 to pursue a solo career but returned for two live stints in 2008 and 2019.
Today's performance is a version of their classic "Lay It On The Line". Rik's high vocals and perfect tone, are qualities I really miss from today's music and I think you'll really enjoy them in this video.

Rik Emmett not only has a great voice with amazing range, but he's also a hell of a guitar player!
I know we are reacting to Triumph's amazing vocal perfection, but I have always appreciated thier positive themes and inspirational lyrics. I still play Hold On, Magic Power and Never Surender to get me in a positive mood and ready to take on life,
I couldn't agree more! Add Fight The Good Fight
Yeah the Catholic upbringing definitely comes through in the lyrics
“I don’t ask for much, the truth will do just fine” is quite possibly the greatest lyric ever written!!
Triumph never got the credit they deserved.
A great band!
It's a shame they weren't bigger in the US, but they did in Canada - they're in the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame.
Well, yes and no. They were riding high up til the US Festival in 1983, and they were played ALL the time on KOME FM in San Jose CA in the early 80s. The problem was that their albums got increasingly Commercial and slick-sounding from about the Mid-80s onward which didn't help their career.
@@1970borntorun
That was due in part due to the record company wanting commercial success . The record company also wanted to bring in outside songwriters in essence to manufacture hit songs .
So to appease the record company they made a more commercial sounding album .
@@fofrankstank Yes... actually the American music industry screwed with all good hard rock bands in the mid 80s... everybody started spraying and dying their hairs, wearing lemon yellow/pink clothing and using synthetized guitar sounds ...
Opened for him at a club called Harpos in Detroit, MI. Around the early 90’s. INCREDIBLE!! Consider it a blessing and one of the highlights of My life!! 🙏🏼
I love the way he could sing and play lead at the same time
.....and still can!
Rik Emmett's voice is an instrument of perfection.
😀
I agree with the loss of vocalists with the high range in recent times. The beauty of the high range is the ability to cut through the instrumental elements and rise above it, and clearly enunciate and emote the energy of the lyrics.
Gil Moore works 5 mins down the road from my house. He is the manager of Metal Works studios in Mississauga , Ontario . I have seen Triumph many times along with Rush . Always top notch musicianship
Great band! Rock on!
OWNER of Canada's largest recording studio
@@lindseyanderson9495 Originally built just for Triumph that became one of the best studios in the WORLD! I mean even Christina Aguilera recorded there among many others in many musical styles. They even have a school that teaches production and mixing out of *METALWORKS!*
He owns it
Rik Emmett has such a power house vocal. He could hit those high notes just as good as anyone. Had the privilege of seeing them in 1986, during their *Sport Of Kings* tour. Fantastic playing and show...
Awesome! 😀
better than most..a natural...no effort
Thunder Seven. Amazing.
@@Bigstrat2 ~ Definitely natural vocals...🎤🎸🙂
@@taunoctua245 ~ I'll have to take a listen to that Lp. I only have The four albums before *"Thunder Seven."*
Ken, you are amazing brother. Thanks for giving props to Triumph. Appreciate the love! Triumph always nailed it in concert.
You bet!
I may be aging myself, but I was at this concert. Incredible show.
Thanks for listening!
I was there too, man!
One of the few vocalist that were absolutely untouchable live, you just really don't see that anymore...and also pretty damn good chops on guitar too...
I was fortunate to be present at 3 Triumph Concerts. One was in Hamilton Ontario in 1979. Also saw Triumph in Ottawa Canada several times. Awesome energy and musicianship all-around. It was like the musicians gave 100% effort and enthusiasm for every show.
Gil Moore also an AWESOME singer !!!!!
He certainly is! 😀
Yeah he said that once already.
Tears in the rain is a awesome song. I love that song.
Take Emmett from this band and no matter how good Moore an Levine were on their instruments they would have never reached the heights they got to with him. They didn’t have Emmett’s creativity as he introduced them to his music style and writing and it rubbed off. He had an uncanny ability to make everyone around him sound better. His music style and performances are legendary. Ask any rock, jazz, or blues guitar player. In the 80’s I asked my guitar virtuoso teacher how good he was, he said he has more talent in the tip of his little finger than anyone he had ever heard. That was high praise coming from him. He was an incredible jazz guitar player.
Rik Emmit is so talented and seems to be a really nice guy. Classic trained in music and it's obvious in his use of scales, etc.
Indeed! Rock on!
Rick Emmit in an interview said he never played scales and went by ear/improv
1981 Maple leaf Gardens, New Years Eve. First row floors. Soon as the bass cords were struck thought my heart was gonna explode out of my chest. I have seen many concerts of the years and will always say that Triumph were one of the best yet under rated, I guess to many living behind the coat tails of Rush.
I love this song. Triumph rocks. Rik Emmett, what can I say? Incredible voice.
Indeed!
Proud Canadian here. we grow great comedians and singers/bands.
For sure!!
I saw them at the Halifax Metro Center in the 80's......I'm in this crowd
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy ....... I really enjoy watching your videos even though I have zero musical talent. I'm lucky if I can play the radio properly
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy ..... There is a band I can't get enough of, Foxes and Fossils. You should do a reaction to some songs they do. I know it's only covers but to my untrained ear they are incredible. Are they really this good?
ruclips.net/video/xA0Vl0gre6U/видео.html
Some TV shows too.
I saw them in the 80s, face melting, mind blowing experience! 🔥🎸
😀
This song is a masterpiece.
How the hell can people sing like that for hours and night after night? So amazing and such a great sound like you explain. I listened to them back in the 80's too. Thanks for showcasing them.
Not easy to do, Judie!
Looking back i have a much greater appreciation for the sheer talent and amazing bands we had back then
Perfect live selection Rik Emmett is So Amazing here should have been at top of 20 Best Rock Vocalist
Saw Rik 3years ago(ish) in a small university theater. He put on an awesome show with a great backup band and can still jit some really high notes. He said he was 65.
Siiiggghhh, swoon, Rik Emmett 😍 This band was so sickeningly underappreciated and underrated. Rik is one heck of a singer, and guitarist, as proven in FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT.
Playful Kitten 👍
I’m swooning and sighing along with you, Playful 😺🐈⬛. ❤️❤️❤️🧸
Haven't seen it amongst the comments now a year later, but it is worth pointing out that is Rik's natural voice, not a falsetto. It was wild watching Rik adjust his vocals as the years went on in all the solo shows I saw from '05-'18.
Back in days talent was raw and pure❤
Rock on! 😀
My one and only favorite Triumph song...
I still catch myself spontaneously singing
it from time to time.
We've all known THAT girl.
Hahaha! 😀
One of my all time favorite bands!! Fight the good fight is my favorite song!! His vocals are beyond compare!!✌❤ I miss bands like this so much!!
MJ Mchenrick 👍
I love me some Triumph! They always laid it on the line, using their magic power to hold on and fight the good fight! OMG the vocals and driving rhythm just rocked us all! Set the way back machine, I’m in✌🏼
So good! Right?! 😀
Rik is still killing it when he performs, always loved this band, one of only a few bands where we WORE OUT the records.. Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Triumph, Foghat, April Wine are what I still listen to regularly...
Rock on!
The thing about Rik is, he seems to do those high notes with what looks like hardly any effort at all! truly great! That's kinda the vibe I got from Shout with Kens vocals! I too miss those days!
I love Triumph! Rick Emmet is great artist, singer, guitar player, songwriter.... Man, awesome!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Deborah!
Another proud Canadian here. I had the opportunity of seeing Triumph live in the 80's (in Montreal). Such power from a three man band. They were amazing. Up there with the other Canadian greats like April Wine, Brian Adams, Rush and the like.
Awesome!
I saw TRIUMPH back in 1979. Front row standing at the barricade (right in front of Rik Emmett) as a 14 year old kid. Blew my mind... melted my face... blinded my eyes! Speaking of which - if you've never heard the song "Blinding LIght Show" by Triumph, do yourself a huge favor and listen!!
👇
Awesome!
we saw them in the early '80's at a tiny venue, (Marriott's Great America) and even though the crowd was tiny, maybe less that 300 people. they absolutely CRUSHED IT!!
Rik did this great version of Joe Walsh's Rocky Mountain Way
I live in Canada and I love both Rush and Triumph fantastic bands! 🤘
Triumph one of the all time great rock bands. Thank god I grew up in the 80’s and had the pleasure to enjoy this music
Great time for music!
As awesome as they are as a band. Their philanthropy is even better
Awesome!
Thanks for this. Ken not only us breaking down how awesome Rik and Gil are, then raising them all in.
My brother from another Mother.. Many people used to mistake me for him back in the day... the second guitarist is Rick Santers.. another great Canadian brother.. check out his stuff Ken,, lots of great tunes and a great singer as well !!!!
Thanks, Graham! 😀
Yup Have Santers on vinyl, Kitchener lads .
@@terryd8041 saw them many times and my late friend did lights for them for a while

Santers record Guitar Alley was produced by Emmett and is front to back excellent.
Your commentary is SPOT ON. You said everything I was thinking. Triumph is one of those bands that just literally amazes. The vocals, the music... INSANE.
And YOU my friend, have a great voice yourself!!
Thanks for watching!
That's Rick Santers as back-up guitarist/singer. A great talent in his own right. Been a Triumph fan since there selftitled album. Rik's still very active and such a nice guy. Rik, Gil and Mike complemented each other perfectly. Another great Canadian band! Thanks Ken for this video!
I love this band. I was more of a Triumph fan than a Rush fan.. Love both, both are amazing.. but just more my cup o' tea
Such great harmonies! Love them! 😀
Same 😉 💕✌️
I actually feel a little bit sad that I saw Rush twice but not these guys. Like so many other things at the time, kind of took them for granted! Looking back, their songs were way better than Rush songs in general. But I can't say how many opportunities we're really available for me to see them, I was a teenager at the time, and it's amazing to me now that I had enough money to see the band's I did, all major ones back in the mid-80s. So, if someone way bigger than them came to town, I guess that's where my money went! I saw Judas Priest, with Iron Maiden warming up, Van Halen, and the who all in a three-week period. Needless to say, my high school grades suffered commensurately!
YYNOT does some Amazing Rush Covers and Their Own Music is Awesome.
Rik Emmett and Triumph have the Magic Power! 👍😀😀
I see what you did there! 😀
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy thanks for doing this video and also the Tesla one. I had requested one of these, can’t recall which one but so glad you made them ❤️. This channel brings me back to my younger metal and L’Amour days! 🤟🏻 love, love, love you and this channel ❤️❤️❤️❤️
My dream is to cover this song someday. I loved them in the 80s and still listen to them. Amazing, underrated group
What’s amazing about that is the guy is on tour!!! Moving city to city, interview to interview. Most singers who sound amazing on albums simply can’t reproduce the same or similar performance on the road because they’re so damn tired.
Triumph is in my top 5 favourite bands. Rik was such an influence, both vocally and as a guitar player. At that time I was studying classical guitar and he recorded awesome classical guitar pieces! Such a genius!
That said, those super high background vocals were courtesy of Rick Santers, the second guitar player. Gil Moore's voice was more chesty.
Rock on!
Ken you are so right. I( appreciate your reaction. Back in the day it was raw vocal with no editing. What you see is what you get. I am 69 so I was there. Today....hmmm tech took over. Time to bring back REAL music. I am so happy that the younger generation are beginning to pay attention to the music of yesteryear
Great song , amazing talent which we all know is not duplicated in many ‘live ‘ performances this day and age .
So good! 😀
How about the fact that Ken hits every note! And beyond!! Wow
Criminally under rated band….
I've been a musician since 1977 and Triumph (IMO) is the most underrated rock group ever. As you said, insanely talented and had great songs. As usual, great reaction.
Couldn't agree more!
Loved this reaction video. I remember Triumph being one of the great live bands in the late 70s & early 80s. They were always a power trio & I never saw them with the 2nd guitar player. But Ken you got some pipes. Killed those high notes!!
Have seen Triumph probably 10 times over the years. They always were touring around Canada back in the day. Never disappointed. True pros great musicians great show. Emmett is that good live. Seen them in a few small venues where the sound is top notch and that dude kills it. In arenas they where a powerful explosive band with great sound and showmanship. The real deal these lads
I really appreciate that you analyzed this one. The band is tight and this version is so clean. Always really enjoyed this band. Ken, you would kill this one too.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, jgcaesar4!
I always love a "vocal coach reacts to Rik Emmett and Triumph" video!! Rik is such a treat!! And my first impression of you is that you are a fantastic vocalist yourself!!
I have always loved Triumph! Ric Emmett is a very talented vocalist and musician! The whole band was great! I sadly never got to see them in person. I love your channel too Ken! You're a fantastic vocalist as well . Keep Rockin' !!!
I am blessed to be born and raised in Buffalo. I got to see Triumph twice and Rik Emmit played on his own here too.. He is so frickon amazing!! BB King surprised him and showed up jammed with him on stage.. Those were the days.. I miss them too!!
Great band!
Rick and Geddy drank from the same Canadian secret water source. Had to be a trio, be from Canada, and just write awesome music. Sick music………Ken….Please bring back 1982…….I’d appreciate it. I wanna live that era again! You can do it…❤❤❤❤! I was born in 67…You and I love the same music and approximately the same age. C’mon….let’s the live the early eighties again. What fucking fun……❤❤❤! I really need to relive a Pink Floyd concert at the Meadowlands. Just saying……
Finally someone checks out Rik Emmett.
Ken! I had no idea you did this one. It probably wasn't because I asked but this just made me so excited to watch. Thank you so much for doing one from my favourite band. Rik, actually the entire band, never got the credit they so richly deserved. Unfortunately the music industry in Canada is extremely difficult to break into. My son is 28 and plays lead guitar amazingly, and he's is still fighting to get in. Again, thanks Ken, this makes me very happy, much love!
I am so glad you enjoyed it, Triumph 1983!
@@kentamplin I'm sure my name on here makes sense then 🤘 my very first concert of theirs and they never ever disappointed. Always looking forward to more Journey or Whitesnake reactions. I can't think of anyone other than Dave who came close to Steve then. I'll keep checking, thanks again!
Still loving your review in 2023! Triumph was an awesome band!! 😊💜
Triumph has always been my favorite hard rock band. I'm glad that others appreciate their talent, unlike today's "bands", whom do not play instruments like virtuosos, can't write a decent lyric, and whisper a tune rather than belting it out.
grindhouserob 👍
Saw Triumph 12 times and Rik Emmett solo several times. They are my favorites with Bachman-Turner Overdrive. Top 2 forever.
I always loved Triumph. Especially the dual lead vocals. Loved them both equally. Got to see them once live on the Never Surrender Tour. Outstanding!
Great band! Thanks for the visit!
My husband listens to this song sometimes, repeating it over and over and this made me love the song too! It’s really awesome! 😃👏🏼
Glad you enjoy it!😀
One of my very favorite songs! And band!
Thanks for the Canadian love Ken! These guys were hugely under-rated. Rik is still performing jazzier, more mellow version of the standards. Voice is still there. I think Rush really overshadowed them, for good reason but unfortunate. Gil still runs one of the most highly rated recording studios in North America, 'Metalworks' since 1978. Mike Levine on Bass by the way.
🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🍁🍁🍁
I really like the live acoustic version(s) of Ordinary Man
They’re both great bands. Two of my favorites. And, I’m American.
Not many guys could play killer guitar and sing like Rik could. Only other guy I can think of was Hendrix. We need guys like Rik more than ever with EVH gone. Not many players left anymore that have similar credentials as Eddie had, Rik was a brutal guitar player.
Really great band!
Stevie ray,clapton. Prince.
Thank you for reviewing Rik and the boys. Killer band. There are guitar players that sing and singers that play guitar.. Rik is that rare breed.. he does both amazingly well. Not enough credit given to these guys.
Triumph is one of my favorite groups Rik Emmett is the most under ratted guitarist in Rock and Roll.such a great player.
And he’s one of Guitar hero’s. And biggest influences in my playing.
Thanks for covering this.

One of my favorite live videos. Thanks for reviewing this, Ken🤟!
Nobody minds when the reviewer sings along to the song IF they can hit the notes and know what they are talking about. You are guilty of both attributes. I love your reviews. Look forward to hearing more of your takes!!
Cheers from the far north of Canada!!
Thank you, Kearney!
Ken, you couldn't have picked a better version of this song, and this is from A Night of Triumph Live. It shows off Rik's vocals so well. I actually saw Triumph in Hollywood, Florida, in 1986 for the Sport of Kings tour. That was this show, but in Florida and not Halifax, but the show is the same basically with the songs played and laser light show, which at the time was the most advanced and professional. Thanks for reacting to this song and group. Much love, Ken. ❤
Rick Emmet is such an under rated musician.
I saw Triumph at the "Us Festival 83" and they/he didn't disappoint.
There are no words. So special and amazing.
