  • On today's EJC Exploration We go Exploring Not So Abandoned CRAGGY PRISON BUSTED (COPS CALLED)
Craggy Correctional Center (Prison) near Asheville, is a medium security prison for adult males.
Dedicated in May 1924 by the Buncombe County Commissioners, Craggy was one of 51 county prisons for which the state assumed responsibility with the passage of the Conner bill in 1931. It was one of 61 prisons renovated or built during the late 1930’s to house inmates who worked building roads. The General Assembly provided $8.4 million for replacement of the old prison with a new 312 bed facility as part of the $28.5 million Emergency Prison Facilities Development program authorized in 1987. The new prison, located about three miles from the old site, opened in May 1989.
The prison has three 104 bed dormitories and seven support buildings. Craggy was the first state prison to install an electronic detection system in the prison security fence to alert staff to attempted escapes.
Still operating in the old prison is a Correction Enterprise laundry. Eight Enterprise employees supervise 52 inmates who wash daily about 36 loads, with each load containing 200 sets of inmate uniforms, in six industrial sized machines. Inmates may be assigned to Department of Transportation road crews or as maintenance or kitchen help at the prison.

They do the laundry for the whole western district. Inmates need clean clothes all over the state. Someone has to do it.
Also contracts with local hospitals, so these hospitals always have fresh clean clothes for patients. It’s not sinister just a job so inmates can make money for canteen, and fresh clothes so they don’t have to be in dirty clothes.

They don’t want you in because it’s a prison laundry facility in the back. People like to sneak contraband in and makes an unsafe environment for the prison and officers. I get it it’s a cool place to see but stay away.
If you really want to see the old prison become a CO. Still can’t go inside old prison though very dangerous, place is crumbling apart and very toxic to inhale particles in air inside.

I can tell you from first hand experience it is very heavily Seville it has cameras all the way around it inside the laundry when they bring the inmates over for us to do the laundry you go through the gate and take you up round behind the old prison there's a nice building in the back washers dryers flat irons it does the sheets clothes they do hospital they bring clothes from all over the state from other prisons to be washed there's a lot of this in first-hand experience as I was currently an inmate at craigie correctional facility that was promoted to medium minimum custody and went up the hill to green clothes and went to work in the laundry they pay you $2.10 a day is top pay you start out on the folding table folding laundry as it comes out of the dryers I went from the folding table to a dryer operator run the dryers I was at craigie correctional for three and a half years I went from the laundry to maintenance and work maintenance until my release of February 16th 2021 have weeded all around that prison all those Banks and everything around there has to be weeded to bring us over there we need it but it's not as bad as it looks and sounds it gives an inmate that does not get money a chance to make money so you can have money on your books to buy phone time or canteen it is a kind of a hard job but not and they will work it's not out of you if you do not go to work you will see her right up that right up to take you to disciplinary that will charge you $10 for that ride up if you refuse again you will get another ride up you will lose his phone you can lose phone privileges canteen privileges visitation and you I have sent them the most people back to Brown club so yes when you pull up in the parking lot there's cameras all around there better link to the new prison that as soon as you pull up my parking lot you're automatically on the camera and they call the police and send them over so I would suggest to anyone that's thinking about trying to jump the fence cut the fence or whatever it's not a very bright idea and the old prison the reason why you cannot go inside the building is because the roof is collapsing and falling in and it's full of asbestos it's not safe it's very dangerous it needs to be torn down to what it needs
