@floppyj.burger5402 i thought that was how Jagex worded it back when it released. That it would increase your chances at a rare drop but they left out the word table.
2006 barrows experience was being 10 years old walking all the way starting from varrock east bank, Trying to melee them and then dying and losing all your gear
Looking at old guides and the completely different approach towards the game, compared to present day(or even just last 10 years), puts in perspective the abundance of accurate information available on almost any topic you can think of, and many you can't. This was quite entertaining, thank you for sacrificing some of your time and sanity.
That used to be the case in early osrs too and even after they updated it to auto refill, you could still interrupt the filling animation on accident by moving until they changed that too
At the time of release, there was no home teleport so if you didn’t have a teleport you either had to walk back or die or have someone teleport you out.
oh man, I did not realize just how long the gauntlets were best in slot. those things came out in 2002 and weren't supplanted until 2006 when RFD's barrows gloves just absolutely blew them out of the water, replacing their +2 strength/attack bonus with +12.
if you adjust for inflation at the time of the guide I imagine that bonds would be like 3-500k and almost any barrows item worth somewhere between like 2-3m or more for things like veracs for KQ, ahrims and karils. even at 2 chests an hour at min stats/gear thats a big payout back then for sure
As someone who lived during the 04+ era of Runescape the Barrows Items were extremely expensive back then. A single piece that wasn't Torag was worth upwards to 10m which doesn't sound much today but back then that was a large amount. And even then Torag pieces were still worth 1 to 2mil each. Dragon Chain was still around 40Mil itself during the minigame's release and the dragon med helm was also still roughly 20mil which was a super rare drop from barrows as well.
There is something truly beautiful about the arrogance of modern knowledge in a solved game on the modern Internet where there is a guide for literally everything juxtaposed to just whoever had the ability to get their guide posted somewhere haha
The Verac's armor method was really good back in the day. After completing a run I would teleport to my POH where I had an altar to recharge prayer and a Canifis portal. The run through the dungeon, across the bridge, and briefly through the swamp to the boat was the fastest way to get back to Barrows.
Back then, if you died, you lost everything except your 3 items and nobody used protect item all the time because we were all dumb kids. I could see not wanting to fuck around with things like staying around while screen shakes after Barrows to make sure of the outcome.
The minigame was only 6 months old at the time with very limited useful gear and spells. People were still figuring it out what worked best and even then most people didn't even use Slayer Dart commonly until closer to 07. The times were different, we were all little kids(most of us anyways). It wasn't about speed and efficiency back then.
I remember being proud I felt like I could indefinitely stay at barrows with guthans. Biggest limiter was prayer which I think I would travel to burg to restock on. Gotta remember the price of some of the drops were insane. I think full guthans was 10m+ at one point with the spear itself being half the cost.
It's really funny to remember how little we actually knew for sure about mechanics. Most of them were totally opaque. And there was zero discussion with Jagex staff to ask questions. Almost everything was folk knowledge. And, of course, we didnt have the benefit of pooled stat knowledge and crowdsourcing
Honestly, that first guide was good for it's time, especially as an intro to barrows except for no prayer pots). One other very popular method I remember seeing was using a red/black salamander (whatever the best you could equip was), but that was in early 2007, should give a salamander run a try (black d'hide, salamander, melee wep in inv for skeleton kills for kc)
For the travel method, I checked and fairy rings did not exist until over a year later. So, okay, the fairy ring to boat strat did not exist at the time. That would've been the fastest method besides once we got to OSRS where you had a arceeus teleport to Barrows.
Prayer potions back in the day were 7k ea which is why they werent always used as much. Prices were different so if you had a time accurate pricing system it might make more sense.
I used to use chaose gauntlets and fire bolt to do barrows, you could get away with 43 prayer and like 40 magic and still do it, for the time, very efficiently
I was there yesterday on an account without protection prayers so I flanking the crypt and running around without letting them attack me. I wonder what people thought about that.
No one really knew what prayer flicking or ticks were. Like sure, some people probably did it in desperate situations, but no one was doing it consistently. Also Barrows drains your prayer so flicking doesn't really matter anyway.
5:57 Apparently the ectophial didn't auto-refill until May 23rd, 2013... It sounds like he means you had to go downstairs all the way to fill it up at the slime pool, but the wiki doesn't say anything about that, and I don't remember it either.
From how I remember it, you only had to use the vial on the fountain right by the teleport :3 I'm glad they changed it if you had to go all the way down to the pool though LMAO
If they ever sent you to the slime pool, that was changed early on. I've always refilled my phial from the ectofuntus, which is what the modern automatic mode does as well.
It was refilled right there where you teleported. Even after they made it automatic, you could still run away without filling it if you didn’t let it auto refill. I think since then, at least on RS3 they’ve made it where it forces it to refill even if you are spam clicking away. there were certainly a lot of quality of life limitations in the early game like that. No home teleport, no energy potions, not much teleportation jewelry, and if there was, it was much harder to obtain.
The ring of wealth was pretty common to see in every pvm guide back in the day since everyone thought it increased the drop rate of all unique items
That's interesting because that's what it does in rs3 but different luck rings work for more or less bosses

The era of this guide was pre GE and prayer potions were like 30k. you were rich if you could afford to bring more than 1 somewhere

Oh my god this unlocked some core memories for me. Barrows was BRUTAL back in 2006. We were all just idiot kids
Good times

zybez guides hit different man
You had to refill every time you used the ectophile back in the day.
ectophile💀
Those damn ectophiles attracted to ectofuntus

This was before all the quality of life updates
i remember getting a guthan spear and sold it for 6m then buying a whip and a d med.
At the time of release, there was no home teleport so if you didn’t have a teleport you either had to walk back or die or have someone teleport you out.
One thing to factor in is that on-release prices would've been a lot higher than they are nowadays
Yeah Guthans spear something like 7 mil back then
I got a Karils bow day 1 and sold for 25m which was like 3 red phats

Bro did one run and decided to write a whole guide.😂
19:24 Damn one day straight and four drops, that's nearing profit levels that even modern 'scapers can't begin to comprehend
No magic at all for barrows is crazy. Don't let the guys who wrote these back in the kitchen to cook.

Method 1 to get there used to be meta... The context you observe it in is spoiled.
I like how innocent these guides were :)

Prayer book could be activated to boost something or restore prayer points… I cant remember which.
Prayer book can cure poison iirc

with the ragnarok online music... loved that game as well
4 chests per hour sounds about right to what it used to be back then. :D

WORLDS COLLIDE AND PEOPLE FADE, SEEKING GATES THROUGH TIMELINES WE'VE ALL PRAYED

It there a reason you aren’t turning in the strange idol to the old guy on the mounds?

Nope. My-er-key is correct.

Yeah there was way much limited quests and barely any good magical items.
