In a 1971 show at Carnegie Hall, Frank Zappa described the girl in question as looking like "a fat Alice Cooper". He also described the incident only involving the members of Vanilla Fudge, never once mentioning Led Zep. Then he had the audience get up & dance the newly constructed dance, The Mud Shark, to, of course, his newly constructed song in honor of this momentous event in rock lore: The Mud Shark. This was also recorded & more widely distributed on The Mothers album, Zappa/Mothers June 1971, Fillmore East. "...you go out, so far out, you go out, and do the mud shark, baby...." As sung by the immortal Flo & Eddie. So there ya go...😎
Addendum: Mr. Zappa in the Carnegie Hall show also referred to the denizen of the deep the way the locals in Seattle supposedly refer to it: a dogfish. Maybe if enough others add tidbits, we may well be able to extract the truth of this story; or at least draw a more logical conclusion, failing the aforementioned. Well, one can only hope, as time goes by, the reality of obtaining the truth becomes more and more diluted. Which would be a damn shame giving all the talk, rumour, print, songs and a dance, even, that has been produced over this very incident. Eddie are you kidding ? No, I am not kidding. Besides, little Emil needs, and sure would like, enlightenment. So there ya go, hop to it, kids. 😎

I think if Led Zeppelin had been involved FZ would have included it on stage at the Fillmore.

It is alleged that a member of Vanilla Fudge filmed the incident with an 8mm movie camera.

thanks for the comment, Dan. Such a killer Zappa tune there, and I am enjoying how many people have let me know that they didn't know it's origins...quite a tale Zeppelin spun there!
If you're up to it, I'd love to do a collab with you sometime soon.

There is a video filmed by the manager of vanilla fudge. Bonham and Carmine Appice were in the room with groupies and the young girl on the bed. Bonham was a beast not only as a drummer...

I'm surprised that no-one seems to understand why it was called the "Red snapper" incident. Yes, the fish was a mud shark, the red snapper was between the girls legs. The joke was the shark fu cked a red snapper. And if you believe it's exaggerated then you're very naive.
