I heard this piece of music hundreds of times - and it's getting better all the time. Absolutely fantastic, I just can't comprehend that some human could produce something like that.
While the entire piece is a work of art, the moment between 4:00 and 4:40 is, in my opinion, one of the single greatest combinations of musical notes in the entire history of recorded music. Sublime, cinematic, emotive, triumphant. Just perfect.
A generally overlooked but profoundly funny aspect of this video is the expression on Theodore Bikel's face which says "My reputation... My career... Oh God, what will people think? What have I done?"
I once spoke to him in the late 70s about this and he didn't think that at all. He was surprised and pleased anyone had remembered him in the movie and said he enjoyed it.
Check out Phyllis Bryn-Julson at 2:20. She went on to become one of the leading sopranos and interpreters of contemporary classical music. What an amazing voice singing these beautiful melodies. I can't imagine anyone but FZ conceptualizing and writing this. Which, I guess is the point. No one else could.
This is probably one of the most incredible, if not most delicate and sensitively arranged , tributes to Francis Vincent Zappa ever created. I've heard a lot of Zappa, virtually everything worth hearing, seen a lot of covers and renditions. But this is outstanding. You should be extremely proud. I listen to this a fair bit too, btw 💕❤️
SUCH bliss to hear these versions put together like this. I imagine this as a union of many people and musicians gathered together from different eras of Zappa's music career. 🎶
ALL of the home releases of 200 Motels - VHS, DVDs, and the laserdisc have a HUGE part of this AMAZING composition EDITED OUT- an OUTRAGEOUS terrible shortening edit of Strictly Genteel that leaves out a huge big section of this number (here in full)-- REALLY pisses me off- plus they are in mono sound d!!! Only the soundtrack album- like this- has the correct stereo and the full GLORIOUS!!!!!! arrangement.

Lovely this whole production! Thanks. Within it I hear ‘Sofa #1 and #2’ …. ‘Billy the Mountain’ ….A regular picturesque Postcardy mountain Residing between lovely Rosamond and Gorman. …..and something else I can’t put my finger on yet. Frank was beyond brilliant.
Nice mixing job. Been trying to lift the Flo and Eddie vocal parts for a vibes version, plus other little sneaky percussion parts which sound clearer in this version. Never actually heard the glockenspiel part during the "and may the lord have mercy" bit as clear as this before. Thanks! This version is a percussionist's delight.
George Martin must’ve freaked when he saw this and learned this was composed by Frank Zappa. It was if it was Frank’s response to “All You Need Is Love” 😎🎸
200 Motels is now available on DVD at Walmart of all places. You have to order online. My cost was about $21.00 with shipping. Slightly grainy when viewed on a big screen but good sound quality. No subtitles or captions.
Fantastic work and deeply emotive mix at all levels, yet sound and images. Congratulations, this montage could deserve be featured among every Zappa official vids. "Help everybody so they all get some action, some love on the wekend, some real satisfaction"
God bless Frank Zappa! Genteel is a masterpiece. Thank you, Fred Hemmer for the heads-up, and thank the gentleman or woman who did this wonderful task with the compilation.
Nice 'statistical density', as Frank might say. I go to pieces and say that it's up there with the greats. An unbelievable education in music in six minutes.
I'm too young and reserved to have ever heard this version. The lyrics are hysterical and poignant at once! Still prefer the strictly instrumental version. Thanks for posting this artifact.
God bless Frank Zappa, he didn't give a bugger what things cost, just wanted to get what he wanted it to be. He knew what he wanted and worked tirelessly to achieve it. He had his band, orchestra on a gruelling rehearsal schedule too. He wrote songs about subjects that no one else would ever think of.
Still fantastic years later. Popped up in my algorithm. Loving the mix. It’s incredible. I’m really into a band called Dakh Daughters and they use the same style of face paint as used here and it was really surreal watching it.
Wow the editing is so well done that i dont even notice that its different versions by the Way this is the First time i ever heard this song and its beautiful
"...He's making me do this, ladies and gentlemen! I wouldn't do it if it weren't for this! You noticed, all through this material, I've been glancing over toward my left? Well, I'll tell you the reason for that ladies and gentlemen. HE is over there! HE is over on the left! HE is the guy that is making me do all this shit! Right over there! Now all through this movie, every time we've been on stage I've had to look over in that direction, right? You saw it... you know! Well that's 'cause HE's over there. I've got to watch him for signs - he jumps up and down like a jackass. I can't even BELIEVE the guy sometimes. But we gotta watch him. "After all, " we said, "It's Frank's movie." Now, we're the Mothers, but it's still Frank's movie. He rented the studio, had all the cheesy sets built...it's so moche!. He's telling everybody, right now, right over there to..."
this montage puts me to tears of happiness and this mix of the song is fucking epic, i am so glad to now own this matsterpiece on dvd, hoping that uncle meat will be released soon but i doubt it due to only die hards like would appreciated it
The National Anthem for a sane world.
It's basically a nod to the end of Threepenny Opera.
I could not agree more. A very good observation indeed!
This song is my current addiction. It transcends time. It’s timeless. Thank you Frank Zappa. Thank you.
that brief instrumentl bit at 3:47 always gets me, perfect
That line, “…and every person who’s adrift in the storm,” chokes me up every time. Truly timeless & timely.
One Of Frankie's best numbers and criminally underrated.
Actually, it's pretty much not rated at all.
I heard this piece of music hundreds of times - and it's getting better all the time. Absolutely fantastic, I just can't comprehend that some human could produce something like that.
Wonderful man, Frank!
@@Paul47Tat Too true, thank you voice of reason.
All inclusive for the modern world, so far ahead of his time and still so relevant.
Still brings tears to my eyes. What a beautiful piece. 😥
it embraces and loves humanity

And the Oscar for best editing goes to...boomaga
The ending of 200 Motels was probably the most amazing emotional trip for everyone there. 'Ring Master' was tripping balls through that scene.
Possibly the best video on youtube.
Fantastic work of editing. I was shedding Theo Bikel tears pretty early on and they were still flowing after the music had stopped.
I have been coming back to this version for so many years. Just the best thing ever. Nice work

I always shed a few tears when I hear this song
Me, too... it's oddly inspiring...
The opening line always gets some tears from me
English food is indeed terrible
I lose it each time at 4:00 and at the end.
how can you not?
Got tears to my eyes ! Genius
Zappa's prayer to us all.
that and Watermelon in Easter Hay and Black Napkins. These are Zappa's holy prayer songs, his affirmation of life, triumphant even over death
I want this played at the conclusion of my funeral.
Don’t let the Zappa foundation catch ya in the afterlife …
Abbey Hoffman and Hunter Thompson have my back.

Well said
Thank you
@Arturo’s Michelangeli you are correct. Frank: not Francis.
@Arturo’s Michelangeli
Not his middle name, his first name.
This isn't a tribute. 90% of this is from the 1971 movie "200 Motels" which ZAPPA PRODUCED.

Still impresses me since that summer in the early '70s.
Amazing how a composer who did not believe in any gods recorded moments of such sublime communion with The Cosmos.
Zappas collection of books by aleister crowley and other occultists was auctioned off a few years ago by the zappa estate

I've just been thinking as I listen to this for the hundredth time, and have concluded that this is the best thing, I've ever heard.
Thank you.
I've just listened again a few times. This is definitely, without exception, the best thing I have ever heard. It is just perfect.

Rest easy, Mr. Bikel.

lucky is the man or woman who saw this movie 200 Motels in the movie houses when it came out because it broke new grounds in cinematography
Varsity theater, Honolulu.
Gateway Cinema; Ft Lauderdale
some small theater in San Fran, out off Clement. Damned if I can remember the name of it.
Cinéma d'Art et d'Essai, Bordeaux, France.
I saw it when it came out over here in the U.K.
A true music genius. A standout piece of work.
Thank you for the heartwarming experience.

Ich liebe die Musik von FRANK ZAPPA
Nicht nur du - Zappa hat so viel grandiose Musik erschaffen. U.a. Strictly Genteel - absolut fantastisch.
This should be the international anthem, nothing less!
I love the whole movie I wish I could find it again.
It's on Amazon
Nice video quality, none of the interlacing I remember seeing in previous versions. Great overall job in production melding these versions together!
Too bad the whole film couldn't have enjoyed sound quality like this.
I would have loved to hear/see a collaboration between FZ and The Residents.
I applaud your efforts. Well done! Thanks for not forgetting Frank.
