PS5 might be better but on PS4 it's the same, control has big latency, runs at 30fps too. It doesn't feel great at all. I'm having a hard time believing this was made by Wayforward, seeing how perfect Contra 4 was.
I just finished playing the demo on Switch and agree completely. Hitching caused a couple of deaths and the input repsonse is subpar. The 30fps is also disappointing, especially after having recently put a large amount of time into Sky Force Reloaded, which runs at a smooth 60fps. Not quite the same since that game has vertical auto-scrolling levels, but it's still proof that Switch is capable of 60fps graphics on this style of game. I'll have to pass on this one even though it was a highlight of the Partner Direct. Thank the gaming gods for demos.
The Switch is definitely capable of 60fps for this level of graphics. I mean the recent release of Prince of Persia runs at 60 on the Switch. heck even Metroid Dread (which imo looks way better than Contra) runs flawlessly at 60.

I agree about the lag when jumping. I downloaded the demo on switch. When u press the jump button, there is a little lag between pushing the jump button and the jump happening. It is a little frustrating
There aren't any missing animations, it's just with how quick the game is, you need to perform very quick actions like going prone or aiming in whatever direction when avoiding projectiles just like the old Contra games. So movement feels immediately responsive when ducking for cover.
Just as a heads up for people regarding the Switch version of this game. I just watched an interview with the director of the game and though the game WILL run at 30fps on Switch, they were already aware of the Switch demo having lagging hitches and were already working on smoothing it all out; however, they had to release the demo as was at the time to make the deadline for the shadow drop in the Nintendo Direct. He confirmed the issue has already been fixed for the full release. Also, the reason they had to go with 30fps on Switch is mainly due to all the bullets that can occur onscreen.
Tried to play the switch demo and it wouldnt get past the loading screen on the first level. It wasnt frozen just kept loading for a few minutes without finishing. Tried it on the PS5 though and loved it.
I played the demo earlier today and really liked it overall. Really handled like an updated version of the original on NES (which is of course legendary!). However, I did notice strange frame rate issues as well. Now, I’m a D-pad diehard and one thing that was really cool!: You can choose “8-way” directional controls and use your D-pad on your (hopefully Pro Controller or in my case Nitro Deck), controller but still use BOTH the analog stick OR D-pad anytime depending on the situation you’re in within the game! I noticed that “frame(s) missing” thing sometimes depends on if you’re using the analog stick OR D-pad! When ducking/standing using the D-pad, it skips frame(s) just like the old school NES Contra, but using the analog ADDS frames to the animation when you duck/stand up! I think that’s REALLY cool. I’m assuming it’s intentionally skipping the frames to match the old-school NES feel. But, yeah.. the frame rate issues overall are a thing as of now, and the presentation has a rather “mobile game” look to it, for sure. Hopefully more “patches”(🙄) can at least help the frame rate? Great video Switch Corner!

@7:00, no seriously, been saying this for sometime now... Since Mega Man 11 at least. Don't know why major dev companies are going with this 2.5D graphical aesthetic. You know, the traditional 2D side-scrolling, but with 3D rendered models and environments. There are SO many independent game devs and pixel artists out there who can bring these legacy titles into the modern era, while retaining the nostalgia and aesthetic "soul" of the originals. We've seen so many pixel artists out there working on small projects that look lightyears (ironically) beyond this 2.5D style. It just looks so generic...
I played it on deck. But it's still kinda feels like a mobile game even at 60 fps. It's also fairly easy on the standard setting. If it hits 20 or less I can live with that, but I'm paying AAA prices for a lazy game. I spent 30 bucks for the 3ds contra which is 10x better
Ive replayed it and unlike what I thought first, there is no input lag. Despite a few stutters between some parts of the level, the main problem is the frame rate that is constant but always below 30fps. So the character looks heavy. Its exactly like when you played on pal 50hz system the old 60hz ntsc games. Obviously the game was made on ps4 and they just decreased drastically the frame rate. They should speed up the game on switch.
I played the PS4 demo and it doesn't run great either. runs at 30fps and yes the input delay/latency is clearly there. pressing jump or any action takes around 1/3 second to actually happen on the screen. it doesn't feel good at all. i changed my mind and won't buy this game.
I played the demo on the pc and saw 144fps on 1080p monitor. (My monitor is maxed at 144, not sure if higher fps is attainable?) I've played the first contra in the arcade back in the 1980s . The price does a little high . Operation galuga does add most of the previous gameplay techniques to this version. I hoping for a game here that is not too short and has replay ability with friends. A side note. I played the mobile contra returns which is a play to win . Stop playing that one. I will pick this one up. Switch build lacks of fps which at higher fps makes pc build of choice.
The game is unfinished. Even on my legion go there were some hitches. Yes, it ran better for sure on steam, but there were some bugs present. The game also froze on me, i jad to close the window and reopen the game again to restart. I don't think it's the switch hardware at all. This game can do 60 on switch easy. Hopefully, way forward can smooth out the lag and fps issues the switch version. Its an early build.
I played the demo on steam deck and it was OK. Definitely better than the switch but, it just doesn't feel as smooth as it should. I'm definitely holding off until it's got some performance updates.
tried the demo, everything felt weak, the music was weak, the guns were weak, they have health bars! HEALTH BARS!!! and doesn't feel like contra should. you dont even lose the weapon you carried when you die you have it when you come back like wth? i may pass this one unless it goes on sale very cheap, i had hopes too.
ronnygranados2433 You should try to upgrade the weapons by picking up the same ones twice to increase range and damage, same thing happens in Contra 4. And you can turn off health bars in the same option of selecting your difficulty as I been playing the demo with no health bars. Also, turning off perks will prevent you from having the same weapon you had after you died.
I won't be getting this day one right away but the gameplay looks great and I am going to get it for my switch it's just I'm going to have to wait till either on Christmas or early next year but yeah I'm going to make this my Rambo game
Save yourselves 4.5 minutes, and listen to his 2 gripes at 4:25 Keep in mind DEMO software often uses a pre-release build. Since bundling this demo of a build that might be a few months old, dev teams often spend the late stages of development OPTIMIZING the game for the final release build. i.e., your experience on DEMO software is not necessarily the same experience as 1.0 software.
We seem to be getting alot of folks coming up with excuses for the demo which I find a little unusual. The demo is fine on all other platforms so that's the only comparison that can be made. We are a few weeks out from release at this point but hopefully you are right! This us me just commenting on what I see
Demo was great, im excited for it now, im too old to be playing these hard ganes the easy mode was very fun but still good challenge switch is the weakest console so i wouldnt know how it runs on that
My experience with demo on series X - ran well, looked good, didn't notice frame drops or lag. 60 fps. But i still think $35 may be too much. Depends. I don't trust Konami
I think complaining about what the background are the graphics is kind of pointless though because they purposely probably made the graphics this way to look like the old game like a old retro game that is what is in right now
I played the demo and I thought I was off. I was missing platforms when jumping and getting hit way more than I should. Mind you run and jump games aren't my forte but still it felt way to frequent getting hit.
Original contra cool, had characters from 20-25% of screen the 4:3 screen size, they were pixel art...very good contrast,.. here I think they tried to get the 1:1 proportions , maybe the character a bit smaller, and it feels that way. Sometimes you need to consider these differences, is not the same with a 'small pixel art ' character or prop.., when you replace it with a smooth looking 3D model, you loose a lot of definition and contrast.. the feet and legs, shadows, they keep blending with the background.. that's not how you want your platform to go... A style like viewtiful joe, would have helped much more. even if is not 'realistic'.
Not when Mario Wonder for example looks better than this and is 60fps. It's an argument for "Developers should stop using bloated unoptimized engines for their fucking games"
Whenever someone asks me whats my biggest achievement in life, I remember being 8 years old and beating contra on one life. Made sense, OG contra is hard AF, but whenever you die, its on you. I was so hyped for this game so I downloaded the demo and I was disappointed. Control feels wrong, you cant easily jump over or duck under bullets (as in nes contra) and after 10 minutes of play my D-pad thumb was sore. Feels slow and clunky not smooth and fluid as a contra game
It was bad. On Switch the framerate was not solid and there was lag in moving and jumping. The game itself was just off. The graphics and gameplay was below par. I uninstalled immediately.
Also, why do all these look like cheap phone games now? What happened to beautiful sprite animation we got in Contra 3 and Hard Corps back in the day that put all this new games to shame :-)
I'm not crazy then, it felt off to me too. Between the demo being kinda average to me, and the physical copies being done through LRG exclusively as far as I can tell, I'm probably just going to pass on this.

My problem with this is the rate at which the guns fire. Like it's so slow compared to the original games.
Damn, Contra will always be one of my favorites from childhood. I’m disappointed in the state of this game, yeah I checked out my guy RGT’s video on this game as well. All I can say is “Damn” smh
I appreciate you doing the comparison. I wanted for the switch but for this price i need it smooth. Im getting it on ps5
Its playing well on steam deck oled, I may pick it up down the line when its reduced in price, fun but not premium price worthy in my opinion.
I played this in the arcades in my area it was ok. It feels like they just splat some ink and asking for to much money for a reskin.
I like challenges if it's adding because of the flaws of the NS, why not playing longer.
I can't believe they screwed up such a great game this is very sad
Switch version is the one they screwed up, the other versions are fine.
It's actually very fun. Try out the demo (not on switch hopefully).
Would be a great anime if done right a pit fighter remake would be nice
I'll be buying this on STEAM and playing it on my Taito Vewlix.
I agree. The demo is very laggy, unfortunately. I hope they fix it before the release, but i think it's not going to happen :(
It's only laggy on Switch. It's fine on other systems, even my laptop runs it way above 60fps.
Its free on pc
it's a demo. just wait and see if they fix this stuff.
I would agree if release wasn't a couple weeks away
Just by watching you, can see the difference and how smooth it plays on PS5, PS5 is the way to go
That's a shame - I've not played the demo yet but input has spoiled quite a few games for me, so this sounds like a miss.
They should've remade shattered soldier instead.
There has never been and there will never be a Contra game better than Hard Corps. There, I said it and y'all know it's true.
This isn't the first Contra game to have health bars, that would be the Japanese version of Hard Corps
@@zenksren8206Contra on MSX(1989) had health bars before that.
ronnygranados2433 You should try to upgrade the weapons by picking up the same ones twice to increase range and damage, same thing happens in Contra 4. And you can turn off health bars in the same option of selecting your difficulty as I been playing the demo with no health bars. Also, turning off perks will prevent you from having the same weapon you had after you died.
@@masterlee1988 even still with all that not convinced and not a good 1st impression
@@zenksren8206 i never played the japanese version but when i played the u.s version it was brutal like ive always known it to be
I won't be getting this day one right away but the gameplay looks great and I am going to get it for my switch it's just I'm going to have to wait till either on Christmas or early next year but yeah I'm going to make this my Rambo game
Maybe "Spidersaurs!" is a better choice?
Save yourselves 4.5 minutes, and listen to his 2 gripes at 4:25
Keep in mind DEMO software often uses a pre-release build.
This us me just commenting on what I see
Switch should really take the prices down on their games.
Same issue with switch version
Not a fan of graphics but looks fun enough. My issue is it's lrgs doing it and too expensive, I'd pay £20s for physical
Demo was great, im excited for it now, im too old to be playing these hard ganes the easy mode was very fun but still good challenge switch is the weakest console so i wouldnt know how it runs on that
I find the controllers unresponsive for some reason. Every Contra before this one feels perfect to play
Thank you.
That’s not on you. The Switch port has atrocious amounts of input lag and a horrible framerate to boot. PC and PS5 versions are great though.
@@Gryzor88Yeah I only play it on PC and it feels perfect.
Here is another argument for the outdated Switch and the need for Switch 2.
Not when Mario Wonder for example looks better than this and is 60fps. It's an argument for "Developers should stop using bloated unoptimized engines for their fucking games"
Compare the quality of this to Prince of Persia and Metroid Dread.
Remember when Konami were good!
That's WayFoward
Playstation is where u want to play 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Frame rate issues, stutters, and input lag... and developers make games for only the Switch. Hmm. When are they gonna learn?
I’ll just play Contra or Super C on NES
It was bad. On Switch the framerate was not solid and there was lag in moving and jumping.
The game itself was just off. The graphics and gameplay was below par. I uninstalled immediately.
Shat Soldier is still the best.
Also, why do all these look like cheap phone games now? What happened to beautiful sprite animation we got in Contra 3 and Hard Corps back in the day that put all this new games to shame :-)
It's most likely for budget reasons.
I'm not crazy then, it felt off to me too. Between the demo being kinda average to me, and the physical copies being done through LRG exclusively as far as I can tell, I'm probably just going to pass on this.
It's getting a retail version in Europe
