Pro-snowboarder, Mike Basich, tours his self-built 225 square foot home in the middle of his 40 acre snow covered property near Truckee, CA - and shows how being close to nature drives his most creative decisions.
In Going Off Grid, Laura Ling examines how 180,000 Americans a year are choosing to live entirely disconnected from our modern internet-focused world in pursuit of a more sustainable, simple lifestyle.

Clarissa Ruiz

a beautiful house much bigger on the inside than it actually appears from without
Scott Mantooth It's crazy how spacious these tiny homes are capable of seeming
if a space is well designed as these tiny houses seem, to naturally gravitate towards you eliminate the superfluous trappings of the need for "more stuff" and focus on exactly
what you need,,, this is the type of studio space i would love to have for writing and for art.
+Scott Mantooth It's like the Tardis ;-)
very much so
+Scott Mantooth it's big enough 4 him ;)
He has discovered what happiness is, and that is freedom.

+SFODorDEVGRU ? *EAGLE NOISE
+SFODorDEVGRU ? Keep it up and you will find yourself living under a boot.
+dieselphiend Too bad you have to escape society to find it.
klarkolofsson Agreed.
What a beautiful way to live!
Wow - at lot of effort and thought went into this place. Lovely little share.
Esta muy bonito !!!un sueño!!
for some people...
Cecilia Gomez totally thats what i was thinking
Ik
I think that the dog is the happiest dog on the world
And i think quite the opposite.
Bene why?
Because he doesn't know dogs. That dog is clearly happy, able to have a huge area to run around and a ton of attention makes a dog extremely happy.
I dont think you understand dogs at all.
ww2fan18 exactly ,animals matter too.
Wow, that home is incredible.
Ann Le {Anneorshine} Seriously!
unbelievable like what happen to me yesterday :)), I'm very surprised I got many resources on my 8 ball pool game with this howto8ballpoolunlimitedcoins.blogspot.co.uk

If you are responding to my question about the music, could you please tell me the name of the song and where I might find it?

that dog is living the life. So is he. I would love to live there for a couple months out of the year
AYurved hindudarm
COMiKON and
yea if there are girls tho
I
Aww, he's got a husky! That dog has got to love living there
This is literally the best tiny house I've ever seen. It is absolutely stunning! I would happily live there!
I love the star that aligns with the center tile on his birthday
Philip Hubbe no I believe he said he star Aligns ever day at 3:02 pm not march 2nd every year
That would be impossible.
The sun rises at different degrees of latitude every day so it technically is
My comment was for Vita.
Sorry :)
that dog is freaking beautiful
Sawyer Seth yes he is.
***** are you Canadian?
I love seeing the Husky in it's environment, instead of on a hot concrete jungle. Every dog should only be so lucky :)
Mike, you are purely livin' the dream ! So much respect and admiration. Thanks for sharing, Seeker. Wow !
We are so jealous of his amazing tiny home!
Seeker Stories I believe envious is the word you are looking for. Jealous wouldnt make much sense at all used this way. Btw it would have been cool to get a rough estimate of the total cost of the project as well. I lve near Truckee, CA, and while it sits on 40 acres, im wondering the house, property, chairlift, and any other bills Mike has. Other than my nitpicking awesome video. Mr. Basich was raised well by his parents. He is very wise beyond his years and an inspiration for a young guy like myself. Thanks to mike and your crew for sharing. Ill see to it that this video goes viral within the next 48 hours. :) -T
Travis Thoeni Dude I live near Truckee as well, we should see if he is on air bnb. This dude is on the right path. As your question about costs it sounds like he has taken a smart route with his earnings from snow boarding and probably has solid connections in the snow world. His photo skills are on point also, so I would bet he makes good money with that. Living a good exhistance.
Some people say the only reason people come here is he was a snowboarder. Thats probably the reason he was being interviewed but the words "Tiny House" is what drew me into this video.
+ThinkingJeff who cares tho
ThinkingJeff that was a dumb comment. "Thinking jeff" is "dumb Jeff"
my parents are getting older and just bought a small farm land in the middle of no where and built a micro home on it....i was originally so frustrated with them abandoning their families and friends in the city, but the more i see people do this kind of things i kind of understand and appreciate that now! :D
Michael Sotomayor .. There's nothing wrong with keeping your family close.
Does Amazon prime guarantee 2 day shipping there?
If he had interent it sure would
This guy seems so in touch with himself and his surroundings.. Fuck - what an inspiration.
"They all meet at 3:02 on my birthday" Incredible. Beautiful.
His house and land is amazing. What's also amazing is seeing Laura Ling reporting again after her ordeal in North Korea. What a strong woman.
Love!
A few years ago I moved from a big city, into a tiny house..planted fruit trees and got rid of all debt. It's an amazing feeling to realize 'stuff and possessions' don't make you happy... but freedom from it does.
Soon, after college, I hope to do it all again.. except maybe somewhere tropical :)
I concur!
***** Think so? I hadn't thought of that. Come to think of it... he didn't say in the video that he lived there full time.
I have access to a cabin on a few acres, and what I didn't hear in the interview is how the dream of living isolated kinda fades after a few days and weeks. We as people need interaction-which is probably why he built a ski-lift! haha so cool.
D Armon true! I'm sure he has tons of friends who 'visit' often if not to just use the ski lift. Wonder what a gf would think of living there?
I love to see people build things like this.. the creativity involved is fascinating to me.
I've met many people living this life style. I can tell you exactly how they feel. People need more social interaction with just friends and such. But its awesome for a weekends and sabbatical. Building small-nice cabins is a sweet idea, And it really is fun as it seems, to build. the reason its not more popular now is because contractors make very little profit from small structures. Their are lots of forest service cabins a person can rent cheap here to get a taste of the wilderness here! You can reserve it on-line.
His house is so content, i'd love to live in it, but living off the grid would drive me crazy!
you have to be crazy to live off the grid to begin with
Telogist what does he eat where does he get cloth does he really go every couple of months and get food that doesn't perish
I'd imagine so, or he could go hunting for food.
What would drive you crazy about it?
MotoMatt Yeah ikr how would he have contacted these guys making the vid
Whoa, this would be an amazing getaway spot!
One can only imagine how much weed is being smoked at that house....
only a complte and uttr fucking moron would smoke inside.
Conor_Mcgregor no u should try it some time
Conor_Mcgregor excactly especially if he has a balcony
But ... But ... Hotbox?
Gorgeous place to call home!! Love your best friend as well, lucky pup!!
Smart, logic guy. Beautiful place and LOVE his Dog!
Kudos to him for building it himself. Feels much more special this way. He's even got creek water in his tap.
Just gettin' back to the basics with my own private ski lift. No big deal.
Sweet house though.
Beautiful rock work. Amazing views and decor
yes
Yeah Mike! So rad.
bless you man for giving this dog a perfect life
I wonder where he keeps his OZ of shrooms?
This house is insane! Can we move in?
+DNews lol
+нрфк збу фььзшзьр екзжж GGG
I could live there. It looks amazing!!!
We would too :)
what a badass cabin. lots of natural light and windows make it look huge!
One of my childhood heroes. You go, Mikey. I appreciate what you've wanted to do for the world around you. Props for the house and the obvious love for your dog. I'm super jealous.
I prefer small houses, simply because they are easier to heat, or cool and you can put alot more fine detail in a small space than you can in a large building.
The golden ratio shit was crazy.
Michael Sotomayor i just saw a video on that today
can you link it please?
Wow. Beautiful man. Inside and out. Beautiful dog. Beautiful home.
Blessings to him. Always. ❤
It's awesome that this dude found his happiness and is at peace with himself! Wish to meet you one day!
bet he grows some pot for that epilepsy
Would be awesome but there is no place to grow there unless he digs in underground and that requires significant power and water.
jake rayfiel
john quackers lmao i would
jake rayfiel Reddit.com/r/spacebuckets
you guys didnt see that door under the padio that wasnt shown inside of? >:)
Beautiful house
This is honestly one of my favorite tiny houses of all time
Now this dude's doing it right.. I would love this, that's so cool how he built the crystals into the stone wall, his house looks like its part of the landscape its amazing.
Keep the awesome videos coming this stories are so inspiring
Many more to come! Thanks for watching
Seeker Stories Can you show us the song list? please
Seeker Stories what is the song name used at 1:49?
looks so cozy
I'm thankful people like this exist
Oh my gosh, that is the home I want. I mean, I'd build it differently, to my tastes, but 40 acres in the mountain wilderness would be a dream come true.
If I ever win the lottery, I'll hire this guy to build my dreamhouse.
Spending five years on building a house is a lot of commitment. Imagine he has a change of mind at the fourth year...
That house is amazing! The architecture just , no words. Despite the small size.
One of my big dreams as well. Glad he got his finally. Very lucky man it melts my heart
the dog was the best part
Sofi Cortes I hate people like you
Just out of curiosity, why?
you don't have many friends "verylongusernamethatdoesntmaketoomuchsense1" do you?
get used to that empty feeling, cuz nobody likes idiots like you :)
"Not a bad way to wake up" I bet you want to find out, don't you :D
That's fucking amazing. What a life. As a photographer who also loves shredding up a mountain this is the dream.
That is by far the coolest pad ever.
Imagine living in a just the right size house, away from reality and living your dream, a long with a dog by ur side.
I need that
Lotion in the loft. ;)
SwashDuckler well he's allowed to have a girlfriend you know.
Sebastian Köhler Öberg he was referring to the dude beating his meat
I so admire Laura ling. A beautiful brave lady.
Thank you for sharing! lovely to see the love and life you share with your dog!
No interior toilet? Did I miss something, where is it instead?
evitasdad He doesn't have a toilet, he uses the outdoors.
Oh ....I see, thankyou.
I,m not so sure that on a wintry night would be so appealing with a turn of diahorrea.
And one might get frozen assets.
evitasdad Toilet at 4:12
Oh I missed that, Cheers.
Maybe a pleasant experienceon a good day but not too sure about that one! It could be a pretty cold seat at time,I,m thinking.
+evitasdad I actually saw a glimpse of a toilet bowl just sitting out there in the snow, 4:12 and I too thought what about the middle of the night lol
Only an extreme egomaniac wouldn't enjoy living in this house. Big houses are OVERRATED by a wide margin. (I can afford to live however I want, so it's not sour grapes about finances).
Fair warning, though. The establishment that depends on people being in extreme debt all the time is going to start having an extreme hard-on for this off-grid, micro-house movement if it gains much more momentum. This guy will be OK because he owns a lot of land and he can pretty much do as he pleases. In wealthier, more heavily populated areas they will take extreme zoning measures to make sure this tiny house movement doesn't catch on any more than it has. The potential for declining tax bases scares the establishment shitless not to mention mortgage lenders, insurance companies, etc, etc, etc.
You can buy a big house - HUUge one, and then build a small house inside it.
That is my concern is the ridiculous zoning measures and minimum square ft requirements of building. That basically forces people to spend a certain amount on housing. It doesn't help anyone but the people seeking money and power.
Sorry but that's kinda rude. I'm not an egomaniac but I get extremely uncomfortable in small spaces, idk maybe I have a phobia of small spaces!? And my lifestyle and job requires space and lots of it. Please educate yourself and think before you say this sort of thing. People have many different preferences and requirements so please don't just blatantly judge them thanks.
Why are you judging me?
Guys, don't fight. There are people who live in caves. That doesn't make them cavemen.
The golden ratio inspired design is just genius. Gave me chills. What an inspiration :)
Easily one of the coolest and most inspiring things I've seen involving tiny houses and general pioneering....
5:02 LMFAO thats the gopro of the 90's !
+cosworth its worth gotta bring home that sick footy for the boys!
David W thats so hardcore !
Love this video, and that looks like a happy dog.
Wonderful story! To live in a place like that must leave one in total bliss.
The part with the star was my favorite part, so awesome!
He smokes so much pot and it's amazing lol
This is exactly what I've always wanted

What a total badass, forging his own lifestyle like this.
Great story and great inspiration! His little home(and its location!) is awesome! And Mike seems like such a humble and down-to-earth person.
This is the definition of amazing!
a lot of wood to heat that place in the winter
Awesome life...Main take away .....feeling connected to the Earth.
I was impressed since the beginning but the detail about the star shadow that meets the pentagon on his birthday blew me away
What an inspiration you are, all these natural materials brought inside... this rocks...literally! Thank you for being you~
I love your house! Amazing! 👍🏻😊

Usually you see celebs with big mansions and luxury sports cars and you become envious of their possessions. This envy I feel now feels a little healthier. I am envious of his lifestyle as opposed to his possessions (well, besides the little house). I remember feeling in sync with the Earth as a kid because I was always out in the woods exploring, pretending to be out surviving on my own and building a "home" with branches and stuff. I felt free. It was just me and the Earth out there. There was a beautiful telepathic connection. Now, my life is run by a clock, surrounded by people racing from one thing to the next, and I am lucky to have sunlight touch my skin during the week. This video is inspiring. I realize I have been dreaming of the wrong things this whole time. And this, to a lesser extent than he has here, seems to be a more realistic goal to strive for. To reclaim my soul that I left out in those woods as a kid.
***** - Oh, that's not as cool then lol. Thanks for the info.
Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this The video is misleading and I no longer think what this guy is doing is cool. But what I thought was going on, living off the grid, still appeals to me.
Amazing! I've never seen someone living life to the fullest like him!!
This guy is an inspiration to me. He has reached his apex of his skillset within the sport that he has loved to practice and do since being a tike. He has experienced the very definition of renown, and has managed to keep a transparent sight of what actually matters in his world.
He's so right!
Exactly what I would do if I could afford it. That's besides the snowboarding because I can't snowboard nor ski. But snowshoeing would become my thing for sure, Thanks a lot for this fantastic video so now I know what to do in my next life.i do wonder about accidents or illness. How accessible are medical facilities, like hospital for example in case of bad luck. How is the loneliness? I am a dog person so I know how much a dog can fill that gap, but there is always a yearning for human companionship. I suppose friends are dying to visit often, so you are only alone if you choose to be. Great life!!!!!!!!!! I commend your parents who were obviously very special people.
This is the most beautiful tiny house I've ever seen
So beautiful.
And a dog as well.... he's got everything.
Wish I could get that much acres of land
This is somewhat similar to a dream I have. I want to live in a house like that, on the side of a cliff or mountain in nature but looking over a small city or town. trees all around but a road heading down to said town or city.
Who is this smart? Love this guy...and now I feel lazy.
beautiful job and glorious outlook on life! sending much love and light!
Just some hippie with a cool place
ThisAccountWasOnlyMadeToComment pretty much, hippies do whatever.
wow such a cool guy
A beautiful house and a beautiful man. And such a beautiful dream to have come true. Well done.
That's the most gorgeous "tiny house" I've ever seen. And I love his dog!!
2:24 lotion next to bed lmao
Chandler Torres ye lmao
Now that is retirement right there
Incredibly talented! This is amazing.
Absolutely spectacular!! Thanks for sharing.
I like the pentagram design and the dog, but I've seen so many horror films that I would be scared to live out there so secluded by myself. On top of that, I'd get tired really quick of having to go outside every time I had to go potty.
