      Hey Ben
      Wicked comparison video - just what I needed to see after my message yesterday regarding the X3 and 1 inch 360 Leica edition
      Even though the 1 inch doesn’t have the HER video function, can you add any HDR effect to the video in post using Insta360 studio desktop or the app ?
      If not, what software can you use to add HDR in post?

    I think the biggest problem with a rotating 360 camera, though, is things changing around the room (sun going in/out) or anything at all moving, that could ruin the shot. The advantage of a dual lens system is that it takes the picture quickly without the slowness of having to rotate around the room.

    Your videos on the X3 seem to be the most level-headed and I think you're the only person who looked at the "72mp" photos with a critical eye. So thanks very much for the work and quality you put into your videos! I might still upgrade to the X3 from my X2 simply because of two things: 1) the larger touch pad and 2) the quick menu. I often switch between videos and stills and on several occasions have accidentally recorded using the wrong mode. I would prefer the image quality of the 1" but travel is my primary use for a 360 camera and keeping the size of my gear low is important.

    Great Review!!
    Had the X2, and find the X3 way better! Not because of those mushy 72MP, but because the QuadBayer Sensor enables video possibilities like ActiveHDR. Unfortunately the 1inch (that I own, too) does not deliver it, as you mentioned. And I think, it will never! I don’t think, it’s marketing! It’s more about the readout speed of that huge sensor. With a tiny sensor like in the X2, you can readout fast enough to produce sequential HDR in good light. The QuadBayer Sensor of the X3 can deliver parallel HDR, which is much better. The 1inch sensor on the other can’t be read out fast enough for sequential HDR without strong artefacts - that’s why we don’t have HDR video.

    Excellent analysis! I'm deciding if the time has come to move on from my One R to either the One RS or the X3. I thought the modularity would be useful, but I've found that I rarely change to the 4K lens (I grab my Hero 7 instead). I don't trust the waterproofing of the R and am thinking that trading modularity for better waterproofing might be a good choice. My only hesitation at this point is that the X3 is limited to 60 fps except in bullet time mode. I'd like to be able to shoot 100, or 180 fps in a direction of my choosing, but bullet time seems to point down the selfie stick.

    Trisio is performing well, perfect for low budget and virtual tours.
    Now waiting for GoPro MAX 2 ... but not expecting huge changes on specs, may be more on sensor size (1/2 ?),HDR mode at least for photo, and 10bits colors

    Good comparison, thanks Ben. I don’t have a 360 camera yet. A few years back I got a Samsung Gear, but after trying it a few times I threw it away - the quality was so bad that it was unusable even for casual use. As for the current models, my challenge is that I want one that will do it all - good quality 360 video and photos, both for hiking and potentially virtual tours at some point. It seems like none of the consumer 360 cameras are at that level yet.

      I edit both gopros 360 max , and insta360s x2/x3 video for skydiving, in my opinion the insta360 is a much more pleasant experience. The stich lines on the max are clearly obvious in frame, where the insta360 blend in almost invisible. Hardware alone tho. Workflow/ editing gopro max is horrible with gopro quick or player. The software isn't intuitive at all and the .360 files seem very problematic when trying to use them. Insta360 studio by far is the easiest to drop the video in and edit with a key framing approach that actually makes sense. To the point where il readily export gopro 360 max to h.26 360, and then use insta360 studio to key framed them from there. I own the 360 Max, but I wish I would have bought an x3, or 1inch instead. Something for you to think about if you decide to get into 360.

    • @markwornom1050
      @markwornom1050 Год назад

      @@derekremington8807 I appreciate the feedback! Insta 360 seems to be really aggressively targeting the 360 market and I've heard good things about their general responsiveness on firmware updates and the improvements of the software. I think it's a great concept but it would be a hobby for me so it would be lying around a lot and I'm not at the point where I can justify the cost. And I'm honestly not cool with some of their design choices and earlier firmware quirks and just think that GoPro is capable of doing it better if they decided to. I have to admit though that my interest is piqued and I'm fairly certain that I would talk myself into one before our next vacation. 😂

    • @markwornom1050
      @markwornom1050 Год назад

      @@derekremington8807 Derek, I have a question for you since you actually edit the files: What is the maximum resolution you can export to? I've seen one person say it's only 1080p and quite a few video reviews of the X3 don't even mention it. Also, I've learned that there is also the somewhat new One RS 1 Inch 360 Edition. I wouldn't think that it's the best fit for sky diving but it might be exactly what I would be looking for.

    • @derekremington8807
      @derekremington8807 Год назад

      @@markwornom1050 max resolution is quite variable. Few factors in play. The max resolution stated on the box for 360 cameras is for the entire 360 degree shot. So when you keyframe it, you are taking a small portion of that resolution out of the total. And depending on how far you zoom out or zoom in on a key framed shot (not 360 shot) that also affects resolution, zooming in giving you even smaller piece of the overall resolution if that makes sense. During editing, during the export phase, finishing a video you can upscale back up to 4k. But it's not nearly as crisp or detailed as a normal camera that is recording 4k resolution in a non 360 key frame if that makes sense. Feel free to check my channel out. I have many videos that were recorded with both standard gopro cameras, and my 360 max. You can tell the difference, but over all quality is still great. More of a use case situation really. I prefer 360 in skydiving because it allows me to do the jump and catch everything around me, without having to chase a single person as much. Il post a link. Normal gopro video looks more crisp and non distorted, where the max video still looks great but can have a fish eye effect in certain cases trying to get certain shots.

    Insta360 3x is delivered some days ago. Must say, good quality build and awesome possibilities for 360 video. Decent and nice options for postprocessing. The 360 HDR stills however, are for sure less then het Theta Z1, especially with low light conditions. The Rico wins if I compare the results in simuleer conditions. More grainy and less details with the Insta360 x3.
    But for video fun, the Insta360 performs great and is SO much better. The software for the Insta360 is a bit incomplete and a has some bugs, but ok, it's still young...

    I just bought the Insta360 One RS twin edition, because of its versatility. And so far i am chuffed with it.
    Would i have chosen the X3? i think not because i would like to switch to regular actioncam for certain shots, the one inch would be to big and less versatile again, but it would be an upgrade i could consider.

    Bought a 1 Inch at launch as I felt like the quality was finally at a level where it was worth having the separate camera just for it + impending Matterport support.
    Seeing those dynamic range tests was a real killer 😂 I would still make the same decision but seeing a lower level camera leaps and bounds above the 1 Inch in a department that I regularly notice as a downfall of the 1 Inch is a pain. Crazy that they didn't implement that super effective ActiveHDR in their "best".

      If Leica/insta360 used a Sony IMX586 sensor then it has a quad bayer filter which can be used for real time video HDR coding as it can make 2 frames at the same time (a short and a long exposure frame what can be merged to make HDR). One inch is 4 times bigger than the RS sensor size and there is 2 of them. With this math this sensor needs 4x computational power to merge different exposure frames this means 4x the power it needs to run and 4x the heat generated. If leica used their own sensor then it is possible it is not a quad bayer, but some other alteration in which case there is no HW to make video HDR.

      Agreed. Apparently it’s a limitation with the 1-inch sensor that doesn’t allow a HDR video mode. Still, frustrating.

      The normal Bayer Sensor can only shoot sequential HDR, so no chance for that active HDR like recorded in the X3 with the QuadBayer sensor. And for sequential HDR the readout might be to slow to produce decent quality under real world light surroundings.

    Got the Insta360 X3 but the 72 MP is just marketing, only works ok in very well lit conditions. The best way to use it is to manually bracket 4 72MP photos and HDR stack and edit them, but the workflow increases dramatically, and often defeats the purpose.
    Because of that i got the Theta X and its miles ahead of the X3, even tho it dosent shoot RAW, the photos are waay better straight off the camera (+internal stitching i a big plus)

    I upgraded from One X2 to X3. The improvement to the HDR is gonna do WONDERS for my use...Which is skiing where half or more of the picture is white snow, a bright blue ski, or brown trees. Even in summer while the white goes away, the sky just gets bluer, the sun become the focus, the green SHOULD be vibrant and...Ya I ALMOST NEVER shoot in the dark.
    But your video actually PERFECTLY illustrates why I upgraded. Listen to the extremely pitiful mics on the One X2. Then, the SURPRISINGLY ACCEPTABLE sound of the X3!
    Ya that right there sold me. I'm an audiophile and while I'm not gonna run out and by an external mic (because I use the camera in water and in some areas it could get whacked by tree branches, thus why I used the diving case and will be using lens protectors now) I DO appreciate the better sound quality and the fact...I COULD HER YOU CLEARLY.
    BUT ya I want to just mount and go no extra stuff no cares. That's why the X3 wins for me. The ONLY time I want to touch the camera on the mountain is swapping out the battery when it dies (Yes, I did get a second battery. Kinda has to since the two batteries I have for the One X2 won't function with the 1800mAh and...I DO need two to run the full day...)

      @@BenClaremont really though. Thanks for being the FIRST PERSON WITH A MICROPHONE COMPARISON (That I've seen). The me from a decade ago would have considered the others but that's cause I was doing indoor and night shots back then, like in a Lazer tag arena.
      EDIT: and I didn't care about audio back then because I didn't talk as much. these days I explain out loud my actions and when the audio really does get too bad, or I explain too much, I just mute the audio and swap in royalty free music (ESPECIALLY in any action shots to completely cut out wind). On the off chance you have a second interested I would recommend taking a glance at my videos. I don't edit much but find a section WITH MUSIC because I usually save the music for the best shots...lol
      But seriously this camera has been the easiest to use without editing because as long as it takes to import...it seems to fix itself. That of course was the One X2. I expected the X3 to be almost, if not just, as easy (though it does remain 2nd place behind the Sony ActionCam which was just drag and drop the MP4 files but...that wasn't a 360 camera needing stitching...)

      @@BenClaremont thanks. One quick story - I know now I need ALL THREE files. LRV for the app to preview it and...BOTH video files (I deleted a whole year of front lens video files thinking the smaller file was just yet another version not realize this came splits it in into ONE FILE FOR EACH LENS (plus the the LRV) I don't know why the back lens file is bigger (stabilizer data, etc store in that file on top of the video while the front is just video, maybe) but...I KNOW NOW not to delete ANY (and if I delete the LRV whatever but if I delete one of the other I just lost half the video)
      In my defense, the one 360 camera I had before this (MadV360 aka the Xiomi Mi Sphere) put it all in ONE file (but...that's the ONLY advantage that crappy thing had...)

    Now that my Mi Sphere is dead (by drowning) I'm looking at your comparisons with a different eye. :D Use is and will be social media, and I'm leaning towards the X3, which seem to offer the best quality for the price and the use case.
    I bought the Mi Sphere just to try 360, paid it just above 100$, one of the last stocks before disappearing from the stores and I got hooked!

Mainly taking 360 pictures, but also video, not sure only 4360 or also flat. Is the X3 the best bet in that pricerange here in 2023. I am first time 360 cam byer and just got a bit fascinated by the 360 option for stills, seeing how well it has upped in quality the past few years.

    I've had a Ricoh Theta S since 2015 and the battery is completely dead now. I haven't used it in a couple of years and have been wanting to upgrade for a while. I'm glad I waited until now with the arrival of the Insta360 X3. I didn't want to spend much more than $500 on a new 360 camera so that's the perfect price and it has everything I need and more for a 360 camera. I'm going to get one next month. I can't wait and so excited to start shooting 360 again. Thanks for your reviews and tutorials. :)
