- Saturday's Grade 1, $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile wasn't decided until the wire, with the speedy Hansen outlasting favored Union Rags by a head. But the race was won around the Juvenile's two turns.
Front-running Hansen was able to carve out a trouble-free trip in the 1 1/16-mile race, establishing a clear lead on the inside -- in stark contrast to Union Rags, who after breaking from post 10, was shuffled back to sixth early and hung four to five wide throughout.
Although Union Rags was able to threaten in the lane, testing Hansen to the limit, his closing punch was not enough to overcome his significant ground loss. The data-tracking service Trakus measured Union Rags as having raced 78 feet more than the winner.
"I tried to cover up, but I never had the opportunity," said his jockey, Javier Castellano.
The winner made his own luck, thanks to his natural quickness. After a fairly lively opening quarter-mile in 23.26 seconds, he settled under Ramon Dominguez down the backstretch with half-mile in 47.39 and three-quarters in 1:12.24.

Hansen had such freakish ability. His win here is far more impressive than it looks. That rail that day was was like peanut butter and he still won. It's too bad he was mismanaged by a clown of an owner. Truly spectacular horse that could have been but never was allowed to reach his full potential.
riotracer that clown of an owner put his own money up and bred the horse, and helped to guide him all the way to the Kentucky Derby. How was he mismanaged, the actual training of the horse falls on Maker. So what are you talking about?
If I had owned Hansen, I definitely would've kept him in the game another year.
My favorite Denmanism of all: "The more they asked, the more (s)he gave!" :)
What a beautiful horse
Dear Doctor Hansen, I fell in love with your colt in his debut, not at BC. I had no doubt he would win and this was my most important race. He won fair and square but if they want to make you an underdog fine, I'm a Saints fan, that works for me.
damn man i still cant belive ramon dominguez had to retire he was truly one of the best god speed brother
Dang, I didn't even know he retired. I guess I didn't notice. I feel bad now...
YES!
Beautiful, tough little horse. Wouldn't rate for crap. Just wanted to explode out of the gate and go like hell for as long as he could.
Hansen, is a hell of a horse
Jerry Bailey at his unprofessional worst. He owned a piece of Union Rags and could not give Hansen - who ran an incredible race, a compliment. His commentary is a post mortem for Union Rags.
When I heard that Hansen was in this I was like, "YES!"
@FishgirlNola I'm a fan of Hansen since his maiden too, and I couldn't believe Hansen was the underdog. Love him to bits and hope he stays safe for next season.
Anyone noticed that Seattle Slew, his grand sire, was also a front runner that needed to relax. So if Seattle Slew could, than I don't see why Hansen couldn't. He's just such a professional and when he grows, I think he'll learn to take it easy on the lead.
Looks like the same race we saw this year! A nose win! But still, Shanghai Bobby is an incredible horse!
Yes, Hansen will be in the Derby. :)
I sure hope so. I'm getting sick of getting 2nd or 3rd or any placing i want 1st >:3
will he be in the kentucky derby?
OOHH this is going to be a intresting derby year ;;}
Hansen got the best trip in this race, and Union Rags the worst, and yet it was nearly a dead-heat at the finish. Union Rags might have run another quarter furlong on his trip than Hansen did, and did it in basically the same time.
Trevor thought UR was gonna win at the end there "And Union Rags won it by a head" ha ! Gotcha
he does/did that a lot, reason I've never ben a fan of his... how many times did he say, "they'll have to sprout wings", etc., etc and the lead horse would die/stop cold.
I heard it's one of the toughest in years! :D
Union Rags will be the derby winner, one more stride and he would of won, plus the derby is a longer race.
to be honest, if Hansen won the Kentucky Derby, and went on to the Preakness, he could do it...but the Belmont Stakes I'd be worried about, since he likes to stay in front the whole race. I feel like he'd tire out with that long of a race.
Sinplemente el mejor jinete que hubo en esa epoca
hasens the BEST, but union rags is definatly one to watch
SWEET! Maye the tripe crown drought will end.
Dullahan Still miss him.😭
ive been around horse racing all my life and ive never heard of it being a good thing to work horses the morning on the day they have a race ...
Tell that to Barbaro who romped in his Derby despite having a work that morning. ;)
hansen is so beautiful
เคยค้นหาม้าขาวตัวนี้(เกือบหมดหวัง)แต่ก็ได้เจอจนได้ ชื่นชมฝีเท้าครับ ขอบคุณที่มีให้ดู.
@gunloc26 ok but lets be honest Union Rags ran several extra length and lost by 1/4 length, good race by Hansen but it looks like Union's a better racer we'll see.
Jerry Bailey, if horse racing was about the best horse winning every time, there'd be no point in having them run now would there?
You know Seattle Slew led the pack through all of it! :3
Seattle Slew was the BEST......he will always be my number 1
Poor Hansen. Still no respect. They interview the second place horse before him! Sure, this last race wasn't the best, but I think Hansen will do it in the Derby.
I know it's been years but I'm rewatching, probably isn't even you anymore but probably interview UR first cuz Hansen mouth was bleeding they didn't want to show that 🤔
it helps that hansen didn't face any good horses in the Gotham. Nobody's come back from that race to do anything.
Hansen's mouth was bleeding
I rather that Hansen would be 5th throughout the some of the race. (Derby)
Kentucky Derby 2012
Traba bonao
Ouch! Ha ha poor Creative Cause he got kicked
Sucks Ramon Dominguez had to retire early.
The so called “Experts” trashed this horse in every race that was televised! He’s green, he’s short, He’s this He’s that he won’t make1 1/4 miles. I say WHO CARES he was a great middle distance horse, he finished off the board 2 times he’s beautiful and on this day he made me 14,000.00 profit as I didn’t bet a dime on union rags but bet 2,000 dollar on the nose of Hansen!
@d9y8l7a6n5 The commentary was terrible.
The horse that won wasn't the best one? Give me a break. Make excuses all you want, you sound like football fans that cry after a loss.
