I've never told this to anyone except my wife. In 1981 I was riding a 13yr old mare in palos verdes,CA. She dropped quickly after we came back from trail riding . I was stuck under her for a good 15 minutes. She died of a heart attack. I was 19 . I cried and haven't rode since.
There is this horse his name was Hickstead he was doing some show jumping and it was either before he started his course or after he started his course he fell onto his side and started to have a heart attack everybody who is at the show was in shock. Also there is another horse his name is Medina Spirit he was working out and he died during his workout I'm not sure what he died from but yeah he died when he was in racehorse training alright so I know how Medina Spirit died he died from a heart attack after he had a problem that day and after the veterinarian hold up person who put him on the truck not to put him on a truck now he got into trouble for killing Medina Spirit and the track people kick that person off the track that's what I heard from a video the had Medina Spirit 's death

I just lost my best friend, a dog named Riley she was my wifes and my child. Since we can't have a human baby. When Riley got sick at 10 years old from cancer. 5 years sooner than the average life span of her breed. I've NEVER felt so broken. And when the day came when we knew it was her time it was and still is the worst day of our lives. Having to euthanize your animal isn't something I would wish on anyone...
Happened to us 3 times. These animals you love them like people. Even birds are personable. We had a parakeet that loved to play with us.. She'd run around on the table knocking little statuettes down after we kept standing them back up. when they were all knocked down she'd look at us and start chirping at us.. as to say.. "well..." We'd go out onto our back porch (which was not screened) with her and she made no attempt to fly away. She'd fly around the porch area but that was it. She had it made and she knew it.
All animals are conscious with varying levels of intelligence yet all require the same emotional relationships and acceptance from those around to feel happy.... it’s sad to see when we lose that empathy
My heart goes out to you and your wife. I’ve been through the same for extremely similar reasons. Your sweet pup is looking down on you both and will always be with you ❤
It could very well stop,at least in the U.S. The industry is floundering financially here and is dependent on coupling with other forms of gambling that require a racetrack in order to legally operate. There's even a relatively new track here called Presque Isle that despite offering high range purses, provides a very small stabling area consisting of portable stalls on a marked parking lot. The infield is not even manicured other than mowing the grass. It was clear that it was built with minimal investment to make the coupled casino legal and to be bulldozed as soon as the right people were paid to allow casinos in that state (PA) operate without a track. In Kentucky, the bottom has fallen out from the breeding industry so badly that even the infamous Calumet Farm has sold some property and downsized production. That along with general disinterest by the public and increased awareness of cruelty,I could well see the U.S. racing industry implode within my lifetime. As someone who's worked on the backstretch for 18 years,I would be both happy and sad to see it go.
Horses can still live a normal life without racing. I knew a horse who broke her leg. Was on box rest for quite a bit on her own. Was never to race again. Her leg healed and she's still thriving. She won't be used as an ability horse or show horse again. She doesn't seem to care about that.
It depends where its broken. In this case it was the worst bit basically the horses ancle bone and they cannot recover from that they die in the wild within 2-3 days of that unless a human intervenes and ends the suffering. Its common for wild horses to accidentally kick each other and cause this same injury and unfortunately they lay dying in pain for days. All the wokist vegan types are quick to jump on other humans backs but they are uneducated as far as animals and wildlife is concerned. They are the type to think they can pat a Swan. I will leave it at that.

@@Tech_Duster that horse would have never recovered. Fixing a broken leg on a horse is massively painful and presents months of suffering and complications, a horse with a broken leg must be kept alone in a stall suspended from the floor. The best equine vets in the world were there, it is immediately obvious if a horse's broken leg can be fixed or not. The kindest thing is to end it's suffering ASAP. To do otherwise is cruel, selfish and disgusting. A racehorse that cannot compete is still worth a lot of money as breeding animal - the owners took a massive financial loss putting it's welfare first.
@@TheAutumnWind_RN4L i mean, few animals get a "proper burial" the reason they euthanize horses is because their body is built around the movement of their legs, if they dont use their legs enough they will get heart problems because them moving around, using their legs as a sort of secondary heart to move the blood around their massive body the leg would have a low chance of successful healing whils being incredibly painful the entire healing process. And only if successful would the pain go away. Modern medecine is much more capable than before at saving their legs and the horse themselves, but its a incredibly expesive procedure and it take a very skilled vet
I grew up with horses too. But the problem is when their happens no one has the money nor the means to take care of a horse with injury. An if the horse can’t walk they will just get sick an die anyways
Wait... so they killed this beautiful horse because they caused him to break/injure his leg? Gosh this sport is seriously barbaric if that is the case!!!
No, this beautiful horse, who is beautiful because of centuries of selective breeding by which breeding stock is selected by their ability to race, had an accident and was humanely destroyed. If you want to denounce the sport that made this horse "beautiful", but still use the word for no other reason than to show the world how bloody righteous you are, then I suggest that YOU are barbaric.
I don't label this horse "beautiful" because of a stupid sport. I do so because a horse is a beautiful creature. This probably comes as a surprise to someone like you but horses were around a lot longer than this cruel sport that is horse racing! Keep off the horse porn too for a little while ✌
Well, that really made a contribution to the discussion. You are obviously sick in the head to even think of something like that. Do you often think in such a manner? You need help.
well its not broken so the chance he couldve made a close to full recovery was there.. but yeah, in a sport where money decides he is being put down cause he will most likely never be able to race not to mention jump even after recovering..but the horse could've been just fine with regular riding with no problems..even tendons heal with lots of rest and careful rehabilitational riding over a longer time period..
Sadly, saving a horse with a broken leg is not as easy as saving a human or other animals like cats and dogs with a broken leg. Horses with a broken leg are often euthanized because the chance of successful recovery is very small, and the chance that the horse re-injures itself and / or spends the rest of its life in pain is much higher. I understand how sad and cruel it might seem to euthanize a horse just because it broke its leg, something that is rarely dangerous to us humans, but in this case, euthanasia is often much fairer and humane for the horse. Many horse breeds, especially Thoroughbreds, are bred to have heavy bodies and strong but light bones. Thus, when their bones break, they often just shatter, which makes it nearly impossible to surgically reconstruct it. Humans have some large muscles and a bit of soft tissue below the knee which helps stabilize a broken bone. Horses, on the other hand, have no muscles or any other tissue besides tendons and ligaments below the knee, which means that, even with a cast, the broken leg has barely any support. Horses are flight animals and instinctively flee when startled. They don't know that they have to mostly stand still and put pressure off of the broken leg for a few weeks to months, which makes the chance of re-injury very high. Horses are also very prone to develop diseases like laminitis after breaking a leg. Usually, a horse's weight is distributed around all four hooves, but with a broken leg, extra force is put on the remaining uninjured hooves which can create serious problems for the laminae at the base of those legs. Barbaro, for example, broke his right hind leg during the 2006 Preakness Stakes. Even though he broke his leg in more than 20 places, he successfully went through surgery and the first few weeks actually went very well. In July, about two months after his injury, he started developing a severe case of laminitis in his left hind hoof which was treated through a procedure called hoof wall resection where 80% of that hoof were removed. Both of his hind legs were now in casts, he was given a special support boot for his laminitic hoof, was on painkillers and a support sling was brought into his stall which allowed him to take off the weight on his hooves for a few hours at a time. In August, Barbaro's broken leg had fused to the point where the vets would have taken off the cast and had replaced it with a brace if it weren't for his unsound other hind leg. A few days later, he no longer needed the support sling and radiographs showed that his fracture was almost completely fused. By September 26, his left hind hoof had grown back about 18 millimeters, and the support boot he was wearing was replaced with a bandage. In November, his cast was permanently removed and replaced with a splinted bandage. His laminitic hoof seemed fine. In December, the bandage on his fractured leg was removed completely. But in January, another section of his laminitic hoof had to be removed and the cast on his right hind leg had to be applied again. He was put back on aggressive pain management and the support sling was brought back. Probably due to the lack of exercise, Barbaro then developing a deep abscess in his right hind hoof and two steel pins were inserted into the healed bones of that hoof in an additional surgery as part of an external skeletal fixation device with would allow the right hoof to bear more weight. But the procedure comes with risks which also includes the risk of re-injury. The same weekend, his front hooves showed clear signs of laminitis and Barbaro was not able to comfortably put weight on any of his legs anymore. He was euthanized on January 29, 2007, about seven months after his injury, despite all the effort to save him. But there are also examples of horses who survived their broken leg. A famous example is Mariah's Storm, who broke her leg during a race, made a full recovery and even raced again afterwards. She's still alive and just turned 31 on April 1st. You might have seen or heard of the movie "Dreamer" which is roughly based on her story. Hoist The Flag suffered a similar injury to Barbaro and also survived, but fractured his leg again at the age of 12 and was euthanized. Ruffian's sire Reviewer broke a leg on 4 different occasions and somehow managed to survive 3 of that. However, those cases are very rare, and you have to have a lot of luck for this to be possible. It also depends on the fracture as some are easier to fix than others.
True, that's what it's like! For everyone who comments saying that all horses should be euthanized when horses injure their legs, etc, are talking out their arse! BS & utter nonsense! I used to work at (& before that visit as a kid,) a rescue centre/sanctuary for horses & ponies. They would take on many cases & take in any unwanted horse, pony, mule donkey, etc. They would also take in retired race horses, but also horses who had to retire because of injuries. There was at least 5 horses there who had leg breaks, fractures when I had to sadly leave the job because we moved from the area. They would get the horse tended to & care for them for the rest of their days. Lots of the time they're shot because the owners only want them as "racers" & even if they treated & mended the injuries, they can't race again. This means bye-bye to any of the owner's & trainers money! On RARE occasions, yes, unfortunately the horse can't be saved & it's best for the animal to be put to sleep, but nearly every time it's because the poor horse can no longer race, so the owner(s) no longer need or want the horse! There's such a thing as a proverbial "cash-cow" but in this sense it's a "cash-horse!"

Saying that the horse is euthanized out of compassion or because it’s too hard to rehabilitate is a dumb argument. If your relative gets cancer you’re going to fight like hell to try and save them no matter the odds of success. It’s purely economical because horses are treated as property not as people. There’s no money in rehabilitating a horse with a broken leg. People in the riding community who claim to care about horses and their well-being are fake. You’re the reason that horses get injured. Riding is cruel, period.
@@rimo1267he would’ve had a better chance being on stall rest no meds for 1 wk then turned out to see if he wanted to survive or not. Horses need to move to survive even when they are injured.
I saw the same thing happened when I was a little girl. Same thing happened. I heard the gunshot when they killed the horse. That has stayed with me for almost seventy years. Sadly nothing has changed for the horses.
I can’t believe they euthanized him without a trip to the vet or an x-ray. Even if he never raced again, he might have been a good trail horse or even a pasture pony. SOMEONE would have been willing to take him in. He clearly was not ready to give up, but they made the decision for him.
99% of the time a broken leg means the horse HAS to be put down. prolonging life means more suffering. horses have to stand their entire life, so any broken leg is incurable
This was a common fracture to the bone. They made the right decision to put him down. The jockey is highly trained and they didn’t mean for this to happen. If you owned a horse and this happened you would have made that decision too.
Rxd _deer omg thank you for saying that. Many people think it’s inhumane to put them down but reality is it’s better for them than to be put out to pasture forever because of it since horses get bored and it would’ve still been in pain
And? They have fire extinguishers and AED's inside all buildings and that doesn't seem to make you freak out. There's nothing wrong with having things prepared.
@@e.t.2914 This happens a hell of a lot more often than fires. The point is that it happens so often, they keep it all ready to go like ambulances and fire trucks at car racing event. Except in that case the drivers are putting themselves in danger, not innocent horses.
@Sarah Habermehl Do you not understand how broken legs in horses work? There's a reason they kill them. And you really don't think they keep bandages on hand for small injuries? You really think they do this for when a horse nicks themselves on the starting gates?Really?
It’s not surprising this poor horse died, this so called “industry” (not an industry it’s a business because all they gain and want is money) is horrible. These poor animals are exploited for greedy idiots who want money.
he didn't die they killed him in the place, because it was him suffering for the rest of his life (1 to 2-year maximum 3 ) and probably never walking again or just end the suffering there with no pain. it sound so bad but its true
Guessing you haven't been to a paddock before. They treat these horses like royalty. But it's "all about the money". Guess you don't understand how much vets cost either. Typical dumbass.
This is the hard thing about horse racing You’re either fit to race or you’re deemed useless That horse deserved a life and got it taken away from something they were forced to do
I’m not a big horse fan, but I still think it’s cruel that this happens. Other sports that carry risks can be justified because the competitors understand the risks, but horses don’t. They’re bread to take part whether they like it or not. And the jockeys see them as lightbulbs - that one is finished so they’ll just jump on another one.
the risk in this happening is the same risk if not less of a risk then a horse running in its un even grass field filled will potholes and slopes... you ever ran in your life and landed wrong?, only difference here is the human body can recover from a broken leg, a horse cant.
Some people are defending the sport by saying that “we don’t understand. These horses live/love to run”. I’m sure they do! I’ll take it a step further and say they NEED to run. For their mental as well as physical well being. But you can exercise them and play with them and let them run and jump and get it all out of their systems w/o pushing them to extremes. One of my dogs NEEDS to run every day. I push him just so I see he’s benefiting from the exercise a couple times a day and then make him stop so he doesn’t overheat. He’s content and we’ll behaved because of it. Animals NEED exercise, yes, but they don’t need to be pushed so that their lives are in danger for our “sport”. It’s disgusting.
ummm... this happening is the same chances as the horse stepping in a pothole in its field and snapping its leg, shii happens... and for 2 you cant force a horse to race, go to a track, your gonna see horses that just refuse to get into the gates, and in the end u cant force them, they go into the pen knowing they are about to do what they love to do, run. but i respect your opinion.
If a horse doesn’t want to run they don’t do it they aren’t forced in any way. that was the case 50 years ago people with thouroughbreds love their horses and spend so much time with them you need to be a pshycopath to force them and I stand by my point of a human isn’t able to force 500 kilos of muscle into doing something they don’t want to
This is what happened to Anthony Van Dyck and the rest of the horses. She suffers in silence despite forcing her to do so, but she gives everyone up her sleeve and in the end this is what happens. It's horrific that something like this happens to a cute creature like a horse.💔
@Legend of the Blue Macerator This is jumps racing, it’s like normal racing but they have jumps and obstacles to hurtle while going at full speed. This is dangerous for horses, while flat racing has no obstacles and quite rarely results in fatal accidents like this. Typically race horses are treated quite well and they adore racing, but jumps horses in particular are pushed to the very limit of their capabilities and it isn’t right.

Just because something is slightly wrong with a horse doesn't mean the horse is altogether useless. They can be sent to a vet and go to a farm and have someone take care of them. Not kill them right where they're standing. It's just sad
I know people are saying that is was cruel to kill the horse. But think of the pain the horse must have been in. In my opinion they did the right thing and reacted quickly to put the poor thing out of its misery as fast as possible. Rip fieldmaster
they did the right thing by putting the horse down. you would not want to let the horse suffer. horses depend on their legs and they would be miserable in life with that injury.
As a horse lover and owner, this rips through my soul to my core! This film erased all the dignity that Fieldmaster had in him in his final moments!!! WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!!???!!!!
it's stupid when they put the green screen up because I think they should show to public what all there betting is doing to the poor horse it ridiculous I have my own of the track race horse that was rescued because he was getting overdosed by drugs that the horrible people feed into there blood just to help them be more powerful it's shocking , horse racing should be stopped because of this reason and any more its just horse abuse , all these poor horses deserve a chance to live a life they would love not run I got around in circles till they get shot from and injury or get overdosed that they die . it's just SHOCKING and HEARTBREAKING
All races horses do not get shot or overdosed. Most wind up as pets or show horses after their racing career is over. And in fact, if the animal has a serious injury that cannot be repaired, the kindest thing to do for the animal is to euthanize him. This is done with medication, not by shooting them for heaven's sake. We just had to put down my old horse, he was suffering. Saddest day of my life as it is for any horse owner. But I love him too much to let him suffer.
Thomas F this horse broke its shoulder by the way it was hunched down, a horse in my barn broke its shoulder and we had to put her down because they can't fix it
Unlike humans, horses have heavy bodies and light leg bones. This is the way we've developed many breeds, especially the Thoroughbreds. When bones break, they may often shatter. And it's almost impossible to surgically reconstruct the fractured leg.
This isnt only the case in race jumping, this happens in all sorts of sports disciplines, horses are not meant to jump that much or run these speeds. Its such animal cruelty!!
how's it nasty and barbaric, letting these beautiful animals do what they love to do and compete at it is nasty and barbaric? ok, whatever you say bcus you're obviously and expert

This just made me angry. I had to put my pet down recently and I would have loved for her injury to have been just a leg injury. I don't believe in racing anyway but seeing how they just instantly killed this horse is just enraging. Such a waste of life
This is sad. But being able to grow up with horses, it’s either they won’t be able to walk anymore and die, or just avoid all that pain. Happened to our Harper back in 2012. When he tripped down the hill. Took him to the vet and he lived only for a month. He never walked far because he couldn’t use his left rear leg.
This randomly came up on my suggestions. I've always said I've never supported any sport that puts huge amounts of stress or strain on animals. I've never supported racing, I've always witnessed awful horsemanship and riding at xc which imo is know different in some cases. This broke my heart. Knowing that these horses are a money market for the rich and wealthy. Horses got me through some of my darkest days in my life, there's something about their nature. you can walk into their stall, up to them whilst grazing, be on their back and just sob, talk to them, or just be in their presence and they know, they can connect and read us as well as we can with them. I fraught tears back watching this poor beauty fight. I don't care what anyone says, this "sport" has no place in this world along with many others I could mention 😢😢👀👀
What happened here was An accident that happens in almost every other equestrian sport. Even horses who are just having some fun in the field can get injuries. I saw one mare who got too excited, went for a gallop around her field, went to turn, slipped and shattered her front right leg. I do believe however hedges should not be as tall as they are in most races, but I'm quite happy with the height of the hedges in this video. A horses leg doesn't heal like a humans leg does. It's a front leg that's half as thin as ours, yet supporting half a tonne of body weight. Even if it's put in a cast or you don't allow him to walk on it, it takes MONTHS to heal, and can cause serious strain and further damage to his other legs. Not to mention that as a natural flight animal, having a future where they are unable to run properly without feeling pain can fill them with anxiety, stress at never being able to do their favourite thing. As a result, often the only humane choice is euthanasia, unless the break is VERY specific in a way it can be treatable. My horse is a thoroughbred, was a jumps racer and even won a few, and went on later in life to do even MORE hunting/jumping sports for pleasure. He lives a quieter life at 17 years old now, mostly just riding out, but he still loves nothing more than to flat out gallop and do a few hedge jumps, just like when he was a racer, he goes absolutely nuts and once he sees that fence, his ears perk up, he shakes with excitement and he just takes off, you can't stop him! Even see my video I made of him if you want proof, he'll spend all day galloping around his field at the top speed he can, kicking and bucking everywhere to get out that energy. It's what they're born and bred to do, and horses that don't love their job don't even start a racing career at all. Because if their heart isn't in running, they won't perform well enough to even be eligible to enter.
the point is that it happens so much more in horse racing than in any other equestrian sport. In 2015 there were 953 confirmed deaths that are directly linked to racing. How many dressage horses broke their legs in the arena? Or had a heartattack? And the second those race horses stop bringing in money they get dumped if not send off to a slaughterhouse.
finally a sensible person! the horse racing industry isn't great, but the sport itself isn't any worse than other equestrian sports (or the many dangerous sports humans participate in!) and horses actually tend to enjoy racing and jumping, as these things are natural behavior for them even in the wild (of course i personally believe you should only make racehorses out of horses that actually like to run, rather than forcing it on perhaps talented but unmotivated horses who don't enjoy it. alas, that's where the greedy and inhumane owners come into play and make racing look bad by mistreating their horses.) but anyway, like you said, horses can acquire fatal injuries from pretty much any type of event, or even a day gone bad out at pasture! euthanasia is the humane way to help a horse who receives a serious injury that will very negatively impact its quality of life. plus it's cheaper than spending thousands upon thousands to treat what may end up a lost cause no matter how well you take care of it. not everyone can afford to take a chance trying to save these horses, because racehorse owners are only rich if they win pretty consistently. which is very hard to do. it's a flawed industry for sure, many things could be improved to make it safer and more enjoyable for the horses. but that doesn't make racing evil either. it's an incredible sport with incredible history and just as many victories and happy endings as there are sad ones.
My dad and my grandpa were into horse racing and I used to ride a bunch but I'm slowly getting back into it. He told me this sort of thing would happen. But why can't they just retire the horse and or sell them to someone to rehabilitate them so they are non racing and just someone's horse?
@@NightyNi8t333 I wish this too for any horse, but unfortunately horses can't live on three legs. Even with the best of care and rehabilitation it's hard to make sure the hose stays healthy while the leg heals but this ofc depends on the severity it's horrible honestly i wish he could have been saved and lived out his life somewhere else :(
If they hadn't been forcing it to jump at running speed, it wouldn't have broken it's leg and therefore would still be alive. Besides, it didn't look like this one even broke it's leg, probably just pulled or tore a muscle and they still put it down because it's not worth feeding a horse that won't make them money anymore.
@@NightyNi8t333 Nobody wants a retired racing horse. They usually have terrible feet, they're beaten and abused their whole lives, fed high protein food to perform better which causes problems later in their lives, and they're given meds and pain killers so often that when they retire they hurt so bad they can't even walk. Honestly, it's more humane to put them out of misery at that point. The problem is that it shouldn't get to that point in the first place.
Why did they kill the horse after just a leg injury? I know nothing about horse racing except for I have always hated it. This just seems very cruel and makes me hate it even more.
my friend horse broke it's leg he was a weak but strong horse (he is fine now) but this is a race horse it's strong and powerful but it hasn't even broke it's leg and it's still put down its disgraceful and just because it can't race they do it
It is important to consider what part of the leg is broken. A broken canon bone is almost unfixable and the horse would have to remain still in a stall for a VERY long time. It also would cost more then $50,000 at the minimum and that's just the x-ray and surgery, after care is worse.. Do you have the money or time to do that right now?
Never thought about it before. I been at the race tracks before. Now I know! Thank you for this posting. It broke my heart seeing that. I will not support it anymore. Thank you for this video
That horse died a terrifying death even ignoring what was probably an excruciating injury. To a prey animal like a horse who's ability to stand and run is imperative to survival, the feeling of becoming groggy and off-balance that would have come with the euthanasia drug would have been incredibly scary and contrary to the video text, I highly doubt he was dead when he hit the ground. The drug doesn't work that fast, as anyone who's had to say goodbye to an animal companion in this way would know Horses aren't meant to work for people any more than people are meant to work for horses. And this is just blatant abuse on top. Rest in peace sweetheart
The same weekend, his front hooves showed clear signs aminitis and Barbaro was not able to comfortably put weight on any of his legs anymore. He was euthanized on January 29, 2007, about seven months after his injury, despite all the effort to save him. But there are also examples of horses who survived their broken leg. A famous one is Mariah's Storm, who broke her leg during a race, made a full recovery and even raced again afterwards. She's still alive and just turned 31 on April 1st. You might have seen or heard of the movie "Dreamer" which is loosely based on her story.
Anything for the love of money...I just assume end horse racing, dog racing and rodeo events. But, I’m not involved in any of it. Hate it for the animals.

How can you condemn all forms of horse racing it's actually beautiful and should see how proud they are when they come into the barn after doing their job
This is truly so so painful to watch . I lost my beautiful amazing horse , my soulmate who I loved so much after he broke his leg in a filed accident and there was nothing left to do he was suffering for weeks and things just got worst . It reminded me of the helplessness I felt and of my horses death although he left very calmly and peacefully , he didn't jump around or fall quit as hard is this poor horse did . The suffering of these animals is just unbearable sometimes.
I used to work at a meat rendering plant in Iowa, where we transferee cows that died on the farms and sent the meat to Ralston Purina to be made into dog food. Every once in a while, a horse would be in there too. There was a harness racing track about 30 miles away. I always wondered.
Purina was using horse meat in it's pet foods? Thank goodness I've never purchased their brand. I only buy high quality reputable foods for my awesome canines.
@@Sphere723 Not when it's been injected full of blue juice! If it had been shot with a bullet instead, then the meat would still be good. In this condition it is too toxic to feed to other animals.
Imagine being a race horse. Having a person sit on top of you and you're forced to run as fast as you can without resting and then behind the scenes you are whipped and beaten if you don't obey and then they shoot you with drugs and make you do it all over again.
I live down the street from Churchill Downs. Every year for 20 yrs- I went to the Oaks and Derby until Seven Bells was put down on the track. What a horrible day. She was running with all the Stallions- and she was awesome. Barbaro also meet the same fate, except he went through surgeries and physical therapy to no prevail. I no longer support the racing horses industry- it is not worth all the glamour it brings when a horse is forced to run, then gets hurt- then is put down. It is just way to sad.
This is an utterly hearbreaking accident. I know a lot of people commenting here mean well, and I adore the fact that more and more people are caring instead of turning a blind eye to cruelty. However it's important to understand what cruelty is and what it is not. Putting the horse down as they did was the latter. Had they done anything else, it would have been beyond cruel. Now keep in mind this horse, as any racer, has a tremendous economical impact on its owners - good and bad. They have invensted loads in him. Euthanizing the horse isn't done lightly, and in fact, if the sport was just interested in the money, they wouldn't have put the horse down as it is an investment... However they put the wellbeing of the horse first. Most people involved in racing don't do it for cash, there aren't enough first prices with high enough stakes to pay for everything that goes into just maintaining the athletes (the horses). Most are lucky to break even. Also, in this specific sport there is absolutely no room competetively for a horse that doesn't itself have a heart for winning. They won't be fast enough. Just running, in and of itself, is not enough. Just like any other top sport, the competitor must have a great day, a great mindset, superior physique and a whole host of other variables to actually win, even more so if they are to win more than once. So are there abusers and rotten apples in the industry? Absolutely, based on the fact that people are involved. Do tell me where in any society that includes humans, this is not the case...
It would be nice to know over which time period this took place so one could judge better how lightly the decision was made or whether the horse was examined by a vet who determined that not killing the horse would be cruel/he might not be able to recover and walk again ect. Maybe one would have been able to find a new home for him where he could live the rest of his live, but if he's severely injured that would cost a lot of money... one positive thing I would like to mention is that the jockey got of the horse rather quickly and didn't try to make him continue. Also if there are children in the audience just letting them watch how this or horse struggles would be cruel as well
@@sammy4282 Do you know how much it costs to get a race horse for breeding? Do you know how much it is to buy a horse not built for racing? Abandoned by the people he entertained in his most vulnerable moment. When he needed people they threw him away like trash. 😢 And now it's happened again!
Horses don’t just die immediately from a leg injury, they euthanize them on purpose since they’re no longer used for racing. This horse was put to sleep idc what anyone says.
It's a disgrace, it's 2021 and people still turn a blind eye to this abuse, these horses are forced to race on a deliberately hazardous course and then are killed when they get injured. If you can't make the race safer then you should stop doing it, not just kill the horses every time they get injured, it's heartless!
No horses are forced to race. Any horse that doesn't like to race will not end up as a race horse. Horses are competitive athletes that generally love the hell out of what they do.
HOW SAD TO DIE WITH NOT ONE PERSON ON EARTH TO LOVE THE HORSE. WELL I LOVE THE HORSE AND HE CAN REST IN PEACE TILL I GET TO HEAVEN WITH HIM. HE IS SET UP IN HEAVEN AS A TREASURE.
So not true. I have owned many a race horse and had one fracture his leg in a race. The owner's spent $55,000 on trying to save him knowing he would never race again. Unfortunately he lost his battle 4 months later. That was about 4 years ago, and as I write this it brings tears to my eyes. My trainer loves his horses and the ones that can't find a good home is retired on his property. Yes, some people don't care. But many in the industry do. Don't think the industry is as bad as you think.
@@freedompatriot1097 she seems to of gone very silent which doesn't surprise me, another uneducated idiot in the comments who probably doesn't even watch racing or know anything about it. Well said mate
This is terrible there is so much more they could be done for that horse. They really do need to ban jump racing the horses are treated terribly and if the riders push them so far as to actually hurt the horse, they just kill them as if their life never mattered. Wtf.
For all the children who get upset about this accident, here is a fact: horses grazing in fields all over the country are more at risk of injury than racehorses, and proportionately no less at risk of death from injuries than racehorses. Lameness in one leg can lead in less than two weeks to fatality. The horse cannot live on three legs. The statement above is irresponsible .Let's have some mature common sense and less emotion.. If you could take all risk out of athletic sport, we would all be sitting at home , obese and bored to tears, and there would be no thoroughbred horses, and no greyhounds. But grazing horses in fenced fields would continue to be prone to accidents and neglect on a vast scale, because many owners of such horses are impoverished AND ignorant as to when and how minor injuries are best treated, and try to avoid vet's bills.
You're a bloody wanker if you support horse and greyhound racing. This is no sport and what goes on behind the scenes is absolutely despicable. Abuse in the horse world is rampant. Deny it and you're a complete liar and you know it.
Very Sad Most people forget about this happening when they are rolling up the newspaper and whipping themselves thinking its gunna make the horse run faster lol. Or they forget when they collect the winnings.
I understand why u may think this But I race and I’ve had to put horses down Thankfully not for this reason But It’s a team sport You and the horse are a team And The horses are genuinely competitive and want to run And as a jockey it is ur job to make sure everything is right in order for the team to do so This involves spending an unbelievable amount of time with the horse And learning everything about it Emotionally and physically This obviously ends up creating a bond Between the two And it’s heart breaking when you loose a horse, because they know everything about you And you know everything about them So it’s not that they do not care It’s actually that they want to make it as quick as possible And try to cause as little pain to the horse So there is no time to cry The vet comes out and deems it whatever And you make a decision But make no mistake That jockey was heart broken And also the CROPS we use Are extremely light and do not harm the horse It’s pretty much just designed to make a loud noise to make the horse focus Not to promote pain for Speed
Horse racing is sick, horses are drugged, whipped, and forced to run so fast their legs break, I hope it eventually shuts down, though it probably won’t.
Those are race horses, and race horses are bred and trained to handle this type of stuff like fast speeds and jumps. Horses have always been work animals
This is sickening, he fought so valiantly, wanted to live. This "it was to put him out of his misery" crap does not do it for me. Ask HIM if he wanted to be freaking killed or take his chances in rehab, etc. I loathe the term "euthanasia" trying to sugar-coat these murders. These horses give us their everything. They deserve better. Horrifying.
so instead you want the horse to live in extreme pain and stress until the day he dies, which could be years later. Horses don't heal the way humans do. It is actually better for the animal to be put down. That fighting to live could actually been because he is in pain and stressed out. If a horse's leg is broken, there is no point to try and repair that leg because it’s almost impossible to surgically reconstruct the fractured leg. While humans have some large muscles and a bit of tissue below the knee that helps stabilize a broken bone, along with a cast, a horse has no muscle or any other tissue besides tendons and ligaments below the knee. You obviously have no knowledge at all about the racing game and especially the jockeys. I know lots of jockeys and all of them love horses and so why do you say they don't? With very few exceptions all horses are treated regally and are well loved and looked after until they retire and they are looked after in a horse shelter/sanctuary until they die of old age. There are a few exceptions to this by bad owners and that really is despicable but it's human nature to find a few bad apples among the many good ones.
It's a tough call. Athletes love doing athletic things and these horses are bred for these competitions. It's in their blood. So was it wrong to selectively breed racehorses to begin with? Now jumping-not a big fan of that sport. Anyway, just my 2c but to say jockeys dont love horses is ridiculous. That bond is strong. I think it would be awesome to be a trainer or jock
@@strangehappenings8682Huh? Can you read? I called it disheartening. Because their facility with this means they do it often. I never said or implied anything about whether they should or should not have a skilled crew. So, why you ask that question is mysterious to me.
@Sarah Habermehl What this horse suffered is life threatening. He blew out his sesamoid bones. Surgery would not help him. He injured his leg further by jumping around. There is nothing much holding the hoof on once the sesamoids are gone. These bones are an integral part of the fetlock joint, and blood vessels, ligaments, and tendons rely on those bones for support. His foot was flopping uselessly. The filly Ruffian (a great horse, by the way), suffered the same injury in a match race in 1975. Surgery was tried but failed, and she also was put down. (Jan Griffiths).
Aurora Garry they dont mature fully till 5 some as old as 8. I'm a ex horse owner not race pleasure and was a,farrier too..I appreciate your compassion..Actually its when they are whipped and asked for more when they get hurt .. the crop should be illegal
Yep, he was fighting for his life. Suffering the rest of your life, til you die, is one thing. A race horse suffering an injury and being killed, asap, because he's suddenly, useless, in the sport? Often, nowadays, some trainer, like a Baffert has the animals so hopped up or like an athlete on reds, so you can play thru the pain? The crap deal, is that 'ag/agricultural' industries, an animal may as well be a bale of hay or ear of corn. The fact that any life is a gift from God?? I lived in Tx. 12 yrs. Went to my first and last rodeo. Rider and calf come shooting out of the gate. Guy lassos him, wrestles him, can't hardly get calf to fall down. Finally, twists his head long enuf, calf goes down. With blood coming out of his nose, dead. Guy ties the four feet, done! Calf was loaded on skid, hauled off. Cruel. Blood sports for $$ and ego. I, the couple I was with, their two kids, went out, asap, bawling.
This is so messed up. Horses everyday that get injured become full time companionship animals for ppl and other animals. I've had horses and I've raised horses. Usually what happened here or done by an asshole owner that can only see the loss of money from potential wins in the future.

I was having a chat with my trainer in my second lesson today and I asked if he would put his horse down if it came to it,he said he'd rather have the horse live the rest of its life freely in the wild than shoot it down.I would do exactly the same thing because horses are just so beautifully understanding of those that take care of them they trust you on their backs a place where a wolf would leap.
Flat racing is bad enough, but place hurdles along the track.. thats just horrible. Sure, horses can jump when they’re going at a slower speed, but when in full gallop, its so hard, and thats why you see them toppling over the hurdles, rolling, and all that. Please educate yourself before you comment ❤️
It is 2023, there is no reason there should not have already been enough advances in veterinary equine medicine that we cannot fix a horses leg. We build robotic legs for dogs and cats now in this day and age. Even it’s not fixed to where they could go back to the intense racing and jumping, they could still live and enjoy life. We just automatically assume that since a horse can’t do something they’re bred to do or love to do, then that must mean they can’t have any type of enjoyable life as a companion horse. Geez it’s a good thing we don’t kill human athletes when they get hurt and can no longer do exactly what they used to do.
thats practically only the possible way ... its harsh but truth ... a horse bones are hard to recover as they cant rest and spend their 80% of their time standing or running ...😔
this made me so sad. I hate this.. think of it. what if that was a human who injured there leg would you still kill them? No I bet you wouldnt, But you will kill a horse that injures there leg? It clearly wasnt even broken just hurt they could have easily treated it but nope you gotta kill em litterly though they start race horses off to early. at my barn theres a retired race horse they put her through so much trama that she gets spooked if your to loud and she dosnt like her hooves being touched they have to put her on cross ties and have someone hold her head and pet her she luckily trust her owner to now touch her and stuff. but shiz man did I miention how much I hate this sport

Sometimes broken legs can't be fixed but at 90% they can but it's too expensive. That horses live only for one reason: their owners hope to became rich with them. This isn't a sport, horses can't decide if they want to became athletes. Absolutely horrible.
Loser Main Horses aren't like humans - or even catsand dogs, unfortunately. If we break a leg, we can stay off it. We have feet made with balance in mind (the better for our forebears to scamper through the trees), and we, dogs, cats, and certain other animals do fine as amputees. Horses are like battleships held up by toothpicks, each leg dependent on the others for support a nd balance, with the weight borne on hoof structures that do not take kindly to imbalance of any kind. For more information, Google Barbaro.

Lol go adopt if you want to say you had a child. I have 3 animals and a daughter, they don't compare to my daughter. Lol a child.

@@RunninQHsRock Yup you said it well. I worked on the backstretch also for a time and feel about the same way you do.

Horses can still live a normal life without racing. I knew a horse who broke her leg. Was on box rest for quite a bit on her own. Was never to race again. Her leg healed and she's still thriving. She won't be used as an ability horse or show horse again. She doesn't seem to care about that.
most horses can't
It depends where its broken. In this case it was the worst bit basically the horses ancle bone and they cannot recover from that they die in the wild within 2-3 days of that unless a human intervenes and ends the suffering. Its common for wild horses to accidentally kick each other and cause this same injury and unfortunately they lay dying in pain for days. All the wokist vegan types are quick to jump on other humans backs but they are uneducated as far as animals and wildlife is concerned. They are the type to think they can pat a Swan. I will leave it at that.

Why do they have to euthanize injured horses? I never understood. And particularly why not a proper burial?
@@TheAutumnWind_RN4L i mean, few animals get a "proper burial" the reason they euthanize horses is because their body is built around the movement of their legs, if they dont use their legs enough they will get heart problems because them moving around, using their legs as a sort of secondary heart to move the blood around their massive body the leg would have a low chance of successful healing whils being incredibly painful the entire healing process. Wait... so they killed this beautiful horse because they caused him to break/injure his leg? Gosh this sport is seriously barbaric if that is the case!!!
No, this beautiful horse, who is beautiful because of centuries of selective breeding by which breeding stock is selected by their ability to race, had an accident and was humanely destroyed. well its not broken so the chance he couldve made a close to full recovery was there.. but yeah, in a sport where money decides he is being put down cause he will most likely never be able to race not to mention jump even after recovering..but the horse could've been just fine with regular riding with no problems..even tendons heal with lots of rest and careful rehabilitational riding over a longer time period..

A broken leg does not equate to any kind of riding kiddo.
99% of the time a broken leg means the horse HAS to be put down. prolonging life means more suffering. horses have to stand their entire life, so any broken leg is incurable

This is the hard thing about horse racing
You’re either fit to race or you’re deemed useless
That horse deserved a life and got it taken away from something they were forced to do
I’m not a big horse fan, but I still think it’s cruel that this happens.
So sad... 😢😭

I tried telling someone that harnesses racing and standard breds are beautiful
The horses adore regular racing. It’s what they’re meant to do. However, I’ve never heard of full speed hurdles like this. That is fucked up.

Don't understand why a horse has to be destroyed because of a broken leg? Bones heal no matter who's they are, two, or four legged.
Unlike humans, horses have heavy bodies and light leg bones. This is the way we've developed many breeds, especially the Thoroughbreds. When bones break, they may often shatter. And it's almost impossible to surgically reconstruct the fractured leg.

This really is disgusting. Who has ever seen a horse jump a fence without being driven to it by man?
And the second those race horses stop bringing in money they get dumped if not send off to a slaughterhouse.
finally a sensible person! the horse racing industry isn't great, but the sport itself isn't any worse than other equestrian sports (or the many dangerous sports humans participate in!) and horses actually tend to enjoy racing and jumping, as these things are natural behavior for them even in the wild (of course i personally believe you should only make racehorses out of horses that actually like to run, rather than forcing it on perhaps talented but unmotivated horses who don't enjoy it. alas, that's where the greedy and inhumane owners come into play and make racing look bad by mistreating their horses.)
but anyway, like you said, horses can acquire fatal injuries from pretty much any type of event, or even a day gone bad out at pasture! euthanasia is the humane way to help a horse who receives a serious injury that will very negatively impact its quality of life. plus it's cheaper than spending thousands upon thousands to treat what may end up a lost cause no matter how well you take care of it. not everyone can afford to take a chance trying to save these horses, because racehorse owners are only rich if they win pretty consistently. which is very hard to do.
it's a flawed industry for sure, many things could be improved to make it safer and more enjoyable for the horses. but that doesn't make racing evil either. it's an incredible sport with incredible history and just as many victories and happy endings as there are sad ones.
@@nikolajcek not even gonna argue with you since you seem to lack any knowledge about the subject.

Even with the best of care and rehabilitation it's hard to make sure the hose stays healthy while the leg heals but this ofc depends on the severity it's horrible honestly i wish he could have been saved and lived out his life somewhere else :(
I think the problem is that the horse broke its leg in the first place. That this sport is happening even with this very obvious abuse
This made me cry. I have raced at Cranbourne several times and never knew this happened.
@Michael Demiurgos it can but it costs a lot and takes a long time to recover which is why most often the horses are euthanised
Why did they kill the horse after just a leg injury? I know nothing about horse racing except for I have always hated it. This just seems very cruel and makes me hate it even more.
my friend horse broke it's leg he was a weak but strong horse (he is fine now) but this is a race horse it's strong and powerful but it hasn't even broke it's leg and it's still put down its disgraceful and just because it can't race they do it
You know better than the vet, do you?
would hardley call some hillbillys on a track vets lol. they made a decision in 30 seconds, while the horse was still standing.
Anita Rama it has broken his leg. In 0:59 you can see that this horse broken his front right leg.

Thank you for this posting.
It broke my heart seeing that.

Thank you for this video
They do the same to dogs in dog racing its messed up
That horse died a terrifying death even ignoring what was probably an excruciating injury. To a prey animal like a horse who's ability to stand and run is imperative to survival, the feeling of becoming groggy and off-balance that would have come with the euthanasia drug would have been incredibly scary and contrary to the video text, I highly doubt he was dead when he hit the ground. The drug doesn't work that fast, as anyone who's had to say goodbye to an animal companion in this way would know
Horses aren't meant to work for people any more than people are meant to work for horses. And this is just blatant abuse on top. Rest in peace sweetheart
Fieldmaster knows what they're doing to him and he wants to live.
This is fooked! I was waiting for the horse to kill one of them! Not the horse for God sake 😔
Um 😶 Fieldmaster just wanted to run unfortunately there was a freak accident and he broke his leg racing isn’t abuse

I live down the street from Churchill Downs. Every year for 20 yrs- I went to the Oaks and Derby until Seven Bells was put down on the track. What a horrible day.
Taking care of a horse that can’t race is wasted money, putting it down saves that. It’s all done for money, they don’t cars about the animals at all

Fly high Fieldmaster may you Rest In Peace 🕊

@Sarah Habermehl What this horse suffered is life threatening. He blew out his sesamoid bones. Surgery would not help him. He injured his leg further by jumping around. There is nothing much holding the hoof on once the sesamoids are gone. These bones are an integral part of the fetlock joint, and blood vessels, ligaments, and tendons rely on those bones for support. His foot was flopping uselessly. If ur a good jockey
You become emotionally mentally and physically attached to ur horses and when u loose one like this
It’s like loosing a best friend
We do not treat them like objects
Unfortunately there are cases of it
But all the places I’ve been
Are not and do not
I was having a chat with my trainer in my second lesson today and I asked if he would put his horse down if it came to it,he said he'd rather have the horse live the rest of its life freely in the wild than shoot it down.I would do exactly the same thing because horses are just so beautifully understanding of those that take care of them they trust you on their backs a place where a wolf would leap.
A injured horse is a dead horse...so
I still don't see anything wrong with jumps. It's just like flat racing.
They don’t care about their animals, it’s all about money!
thats practically only the possible way ... its harsh but truth ... a horse bones are hard to recover as they cant rest and spend their 80% of their time standing or running ...😔
they actually are putting the horse out of its misery, it hurts so much and it would not be able to be rehabilitated. (If fieldmaster broke its leg)
this made me so sad. I hate this.. think of it. what if that was a human who injured there leg would you still kill them? No I bet you wouldnt, But you will kill a horse that injures there leg? It clearly wasnt even broken just hurt they could have easily treated it but nope you gotta kill em litterly though they start race horses off to early. at my barn theres a retired race horse they put her through so much trama that she gets spooked if your to loud and she dosnt like her hooves being touched they have to put her on cross ties and have someone hold her head and pet her she luckily trust her owner to now touch her and stuff. but shiz man did I miention how much I hate this sport
carol mckeowen although I agree with you, it would be much appreciated if you did not call people losers. This person just didn’t think every detail through. It is what they thought happened and they just didn’t do much research. Sorry if I have annoyed you. I’m trying not to. Hope your day is amazing 😊
Loser Main how did they kill him?
Loser Main no one cares about your hate for the sport vegan
Yall crazy stop all horse racing because of an accident ffs
So the horse died that fast from a leg injury?
