It's so nice to finally win the Kentucky Derby!!! We got a taste with Bluegrass Cat when he was second to Barbaro. This is a dream come true for us at WinStar Farm.
Interesting to compare this win by Super Saver to last year's win by Mine That Bird. The winning time for Super Saver was 2:04.45, but MTB's winning time was a full two seconds faster at 2:02.60. Even more remarkable was that MTB entered the final turn in last position. This means MTB's run during the second half of the race must be some kind of a speed record (or close to it) for the Kentucky Derby.
@Rodney81818 Despite the wet track in this race, the speed fractions were actually very fast...the first 1/4 mile was 22.63 seconds, the first 1/2 mile in 46.00 seconds. These are very fast fractions, so you can't say this was a "slow track". My theory is that a wet track actually gives a horse more "spring" , and therefore more speed. When the flat hoof of a horse smacks a wet dirt surface, the water-dirt mixture compresses under the hoof and "springs" a horse forward.

+Duquette Beats and at 4:28 she asks him "what is your secret". he says "we got to keep it to ourselves", it the maquina that's the secret f*cking horse abuser
@Mewlie I agree he does go a little overboard on the whip but in a Kentucky derby the whip is all you got if it was a normal race I would make a stewards inquire
The jockey is not always hitting the horse. The whip is often just waved by the horses neck so the horse will see it like we would see something using our peripheral vision. Whips are always used on both sides to control the movement of the horse especially down the final stretch where a jockey may need to angle out. Whips are also used to make sure your horse doesn't run into another horse by accident or run into another horses lane which is cause for disqualification.
Wonder if there will be a bidding war for Calvin Borel in advance of the 2011 Derby, clearly he's the best of this generation of Derby riders, with the exception of Kent Desormeaux who's also won 3 Derbies.
Thanks for posting this race. I missed it because of my own stupidity. However, I think Super Saver will have a tougher road in the Preakness two weeks from now. Because, there could be somebody like Rachael Alexandra who can upset him big time.
@dustywhipp5 Deep closers like Ice Box traditionally do not do well in the Belmont for some reason. It's usually won by horses with good tactical speed.
Ice Box had to be pulled up twice down the stretch to avoid horses in front of him, and still came flying. What if he had clear going down the stretch?
Ice Box absolutely FLYING at the end.... On a good track, this horse would have run down Super Saver -- WATCH OUT for Ice Box at Belmont with that LOOOOONG straightaway and the mile and a half!!!!!
I don't see a triple crown but a great horse none the less. Is it possible for eskendereya to come back for the preakness or belmont? Either way Ice Box was my pick and he really is a spectacular closer. Just not enough to catch super saver on this day

Thank you for posting this. Didn't get to see the interview at the track on the simulcast. Do you know what he says at 4:05 after "You know what?" when he's seems to be choking up. Couldn't make it out.
if ice box runs in the belmont i dont see any way if that horse is ready that anyone beats him. he had to check up in full stride then regained his momentum and still placed which is amazing in a grade 1 race. i seriously doubt again that we will have a triple crown winner.also if looking at lucky ever gets a half decent trip where gomez doesnt pull him up i think he will show his class too.
If Lookin at Lucky wasnt shuffled in the begining of the race he would have won. If Sydney's Candy did not tire out he could have won. But things happen and I give congrats to Calvin Borel for winning.
@gotch09 He's on a Derby win binge unequalled in the history of the race, that's all. Borel had nothing to do with Super Saver losing the Preakness. He didn't have the horse today.
Cuando colocan la vista de planta en la ultima curva Ice Box se estaba ganado a 2 y no pudo conseguir el pase, solo en los 150 Mts finales y para llegar segundo... No creo que Super Saver se Triplecorone...
That is not entirely true in 1998 Victory Gallop closed on Real Quiet. I do agree that the horse needs to have an even pace. Most important the horse needs stamina for a mile and half
Ice Box had horrible stretch run where jockey couldn't find opening until late. Jockey kept looking for opening coz he knew he had plenty of horse left. With a smarter run, Ice Box wins Preakness and Belmont. As for Super Saver? Easy ride where everything went right. Congratulations.
Lookin At Lucky ... Unlucky. Sidney's Candy ... Disappointing. Ice Box... WOW great race by him!! Very fast at the end... Also... Good race by Super Saver but I don't think he will win the TC. Eskendereya would have won the derby easily...
No offense to all you race-lovers out there, but seriously? That jockey could have honestly laid off on the stick. That horse is running its heart out: hitting it over and over again isn't going to necessarily make it go faster after a mile and a half.
Long time ago but my horses dad is super saver… feels so good to see his dad race!
It's so nice to finally win the Kentucky Derby!!! We got a taste with Bluegrass Cat when he was second to Barbaro. This is a dream come true for us at WinStar Farm.
Calvin is like, the king of Kentucky Derbys!
I will never forget this race. I had Ice Box 1st and Super Saver 2nd. It was also Tom Durkin ' s last Derby.
congratulations super saver!
Calvin Borel is the greatest jockey alive. Change my mind.
Boy they can say what they want about Calvin Borel, but if I had a Derby (or TC) horse, I have no problem putting that Cajun on him.

03:54 i love the relationship Robby and Calvin have.... their such great friends :-)
The unflappable Calvin Borel- Tom Durkin.
The best rail jockey ever

+Duquette Beats that's why he only has one glove on (in his right hand) as soon as he saw the gap the horse shot off.

What a nice race!

@June280 Jackson Bend was 12th.
@Venckman, I know... he just cam flying at the end there though!

@Rodney81818 "It's that damn Calvin Borel again...."
Ice Box had to be pulled up twice down the stretch to avoid horses in front of him, and still came flying. What if he had clear going down the stretch?

Does anyone have full broadcast of this derby? I am looking for bob costas post race interviews, please help

Calvin got a workout on that ride
if ice box runs in the belmont i dont see any way if that horse is ready that anyone beats him. he had to check up in full stride then regained his momentum and still placed which is amazing in a grade 1 race. i seriously doubt again that we will have a triple crown winner.also if looking at lucky ever gets a half decent trip where gomez doesnt pull him up i think he will show his class too.
Wat does it mean when they say it's an "off track" ?
If Lookin at Lucky wasnt shuffled in the begining of the race he would have won. If Sydney's Candy did not tire out he could have won. But things happen and I give congrats to Calvin Borel for winning.
@Mewlie And you've been in the game for 35 years have you?
What do they mean that they have a tail on him at 0:03?
that would be 3 out of 4! Set for what?
Holy mother of god... Ice Box had the best run I've ever seen in my life.
Ice Box just got pulled out of the Preakness. Watch him at the Belmont
@gotch09 He's on a Derby win binge unequalled in the history of the race, that's all. Borel had nothing to do with Super Saver losing the Preakness. He didn't have the horse today.

@KingKiaJames Eskendereya was retired today.
bo-rail and the schnozz-perfect, i had ice box, sigh
That is not entirely true in 1998 Victory Gallop closed on Real Quiet. I do agree that the horse needs to have an even pace. Most important the horse needs stamina for a mile and half
how good is lucky all trouble and still tried preakness winner here no triple crown this year
How did they let him do that AGAIN?!
Mr. Borail is the goat 🐐
@pebey he said "you know what, i'm gonna win the triple crown this year"
@ILOVEHorses22xx No chance!
Stately Victor really slammed Lucky into the rail.
Unlucky, Lucky!!
He is getting up there with Shoemaker, Hartack, and banana nose(lol)
If Calvin believes he has a horse that can win the TC (as he said he was going to) maybe he just will... : ) That would be exciting.
Lookin At Lucky ... Unlucky.
Sidney's Candy ... Disappointing.
Ice Box... WOW great race by him!! Very fast at the end...
Also... Good race by Super Saver but I don't think he will win the TC.
Eskendereya would have won the derby easily...
Hope the guy who won the 100gs bet buys a decent toupee!!😂
I don't thick Super Saver is a GREAT horse.. he's good, but another 50 feet and Ice Box would of had him... I think Icey is a horse for the Belmont.
Damn, conveyance died at that last corner :-(
@csfjklsafj Except for the part where Super Saver owns a stakes record on a fast track.
That horse who came in second was unlucky.
"Bo-rail " fails again. Its not that I dislike the horse, I just don't see what the big "hoopla" is about the jockey.
RIP Devil May Care, who died of cancer.
On this Dream Bet thing, Glenn's the only one that made a smart pick. Last two have been idiots.
No offense to all you race-lovers out there, but seriously? That jockey could have honestly laid off on the stick. That horse is running its heart out: hitting it over and over again isn't going to necessarily make it go faster after a mile and a half.
