  • In a performance reminiscent of his winning ride aboard Street Sense two years earlier, Calvin Borel hugged the rail throughout then exploded through the stretch to guide Mine That Bird to an improbable 6 3/4-length victory over Pioneerof the Nile in the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The victory capped off a memorable weekend for Borel and trainer Chip Woolley.

    Amazing how the announcer didn't even say the horse's name until he was steps from the finish line. Sadly, it was the last race that Mind That bird won.... still, just an amazing feat. A $9,500 "claimer" wins the Kentucky Derby. Love the emotion.... and really appreciate Gary Steven's comments.

    Check out when Borel makes his move. It was soo fast, it's deceptively hard to even see it on actual race footage, regardless of angle. I consider it to be one of the finest 3 seconds in ALL of horse racing, EVER.

    I know many feel this was a “terrible racing call” but there is a thrill in the fact that he completely snuck his way up to that lead in the final stretch. The fact that he was up by several lengths before he was even noticed gave me chills. Considering how far back he was at the start made that big spread at the end just extra amazing.

    If you think about the 20,000 to 30,000 colts born each year around the world, only 20 three year olds are elected to go the the Derby. Bird was elected based on his wins in Canada as a 2 year old. Who cares if he only won one race, it's a great honor just to be elected to the big dance and he won it. He got 2nd in the Preakness and 3rd in the Belmont, he was the only horse to win money in all three races. I lived in Roswell when he won this race. we were so, so proud.

      When the gates opened, nobody could imagine two minutes later, Mine That Bird would become the second-biggest upset ($ 102,30) in Kentucky Derby history behind Donerail in 1913 ($ 184,90). If Mine That Bird was a 50-1 choice, Donerail was 91-1! Greetings from Venezuela.

    I still remember this race as if it was yesterday. I remember my parents telling me that we were going to Kentucky to see the Derby and Oaks that year. The day Rachel Alexandra won the Oaks with Calvin riding her-there was talk basically everywhere I went saying "Rachel is going to demolish this field" which she did. And then, Derby day. Everywhere I went people kept saying Zayat's horse Pioneerof The Nile "is going to win this Derby easily and go on to win the Triple Crown". My parents even said so. I was thinking of Mine That Bird, how he was getting overlooked and was the underdog. I finally persuaded my parents to place their bet on Bird instead of Pioneer. They thought I was crazy. But they changed their minds when they saw him shoot up to win. I still remember the rain that day and the race and could probably recite the race word by word, even with Durkin's screw up not saying Bird's name. But that didn't matter in the end. Bird proved them all wrong. So what if never won another race after this one. He did the impossible in this race. He proved people wrong.

    Our visit to see The Bird was great! Dr. B let us browse all the memorabilia in his office and we got signed photos and a poster from the movie 50-1. Then went across the road to the Double Eagle Ranch and Bird came over...he enjoyed some mints and carrots. We got to pet him and he licked my hand...such a sweetie! We saw his crooked left leg but he is really a nice looking guy! We sang Happy Birthday to him and gave him a card, which will be added to the memorabilia collection. He is still getting 3-4 fan visits a week!

      Good comment. I've seen it at least 20 times and I still can't pick up him up at 1:40 until he's already burst through toward the rail. It's like he almost vanishes. Still, Durkin was so late in even realizing that he was in the lead that it's almost comical. But I feel Durkin does redeem himself at the end when he laughs at himself as much as the sheer impossibility of it all when Mine That Bird crosses the line, and when he does that he shares in all of our disbelief.

      @benjamindavidson4033 2 года назад +1

      @@chrismorfas7515 Actually I don't even think he "saw" him at all, i.e. processed what was happening. Because it's like the moment that MTB charges in front, Durkin is all, "And here's Pioneer of the Nile moving on to take the lead!" And that would be accurate if you totally wiped MTB from the video. So i think he was watching Pioneer make a move on the outside and completely missed the rocket-like explosion from MTB on the inside. Don't know about binoculars, I think it's just an example of the brain not processing data that it cannot comprehend.

In a "50 to 1" scene, a gentleman during the Pre-Derby party says "This year we have owners from England, Dubai, France, Ireland and even from New Mexico" (laughs) You know who opened that door? Venezuelans Gustavo Avila (jockey), Juan Arias (trainer) and Juan Quintero (groom) when they traveled from Caracas to Louisville in 1971 to win, against all odds, 97th. Kentucky Derby with Canonero II, a horse born in United States and bred in Venezuela. His owner Pedro Baptista (RIP) couldn´t travel due to financial problems.

      He wasn't expecting anything from Bird. He wasn't anything close to the favorite. And those announcers all have their favorites so when they get beaten, these guys aren't happy about it either. The guy just made an ass out of himself then tried to cover it.

    You guys should also check out the show "Jockeys." Season 1, last episode. where it shows the drama leading up to this Kentucky derby race. It gives me chills still when i watch this remarkable finish by this great horse. Mine that bird, thank u for winning me $20,000. Changed my life.

      +PHX Master $24 bet. I put mine that bird in my four horse trifecta box bet.. Since he was 50-1 odds & he won the race, the pay out was ridiculous

    I guess they forgot about the races in Canada. By two years of age the horse won some pretty big races. Supposedly without the use of a shocking device if I may add.

    Definitely not the worst horse to win the Derby, it was a great run. The race call however, terrible. How could miss that beautiful inside run and call it so late? Horrible call.

    David Cotey was stupid for selling Mine That Bird for 400k after he quailfied him for the derby but also bought him for 9500.. Crazy!! Cant wait for the movie 50-1!

      Lol I cant believe they actually made a movie of this horse. He barley won his maiden, he won a couple of 100k stakes races, he won a grade 3 and he somehow won the derby. Ive never seen the movie (nor do I plan to) but how the hell are they gonna make a movie on a horse who got lucky in 1 race he barley qualified for??? Its stupid...

      MaDkOrNfLaKeS because only one horse a year wins the derby and it not like he ''barley;' as you say won

    • @MrDraven37
      @MrDraven37 10 лет назад +1

      MaDkOrNfLaKeS
      You cannot believe that they made this into a movie? Well that is why you are obviously not a hollywood producer... they saw the potential of this underdog story as they did with the feel good nature of The Cup. What? You think instead they would look at Big Brown and go 'oh! there is a story to make a movie about! a horse on drugs that wins the Derby! WOW'.

    • @trentrez6643
      @trentrez6643 10 лет назад

      He wasn't "stupid". He isn't Nostradamus, ya know. It just didn't work out well. Obviously a lot of people didn't think Bird would win that race. He didn't look very good coming into the Derby. I stared at his past performances after that race and I couldn't see what anyone could have seen in him. He won.
