    You’d have to have a heart of stone not to be moved by her. I visited her when she was at Hollywood Park and was lucky enough to put my arms around her. You just knew you were in the presence of something very, very special. She touched a lot of peoples hearts and was a true inspiration. Horse of a lifetime! ❤️

    I love the way Mike Smith touches her.So many riders smack their mounts on the neck to praise them as if they aren't capable of feeling a gentler touch.I'm NOT saying they are being abusive,at all! They aren't fragile flowers and they know it's praise.But if they can feel a tiny fly land on their skin,they can feel a human hand gently stroking them,and that's how Mike touches her.So loving.You can see how much he really loves her.What an amazing girl she is!

    Any body that knows racing can really appreciate the fact that most horses that have huge or unbeaten streaks in their career like Zenyatta are mostly speed and front of the pac runners but that's what just blows me away about zenyatta she is dead last in every race and somehow with her huge strides seems to catch the pack in one stride on the final turn amazing to watch

    • @kwgrid
      @kwgrid 6 лет назад +3

      Zenyatta had size & length of stride over competitors. She may not have been technically any faster, but her stride gave her the edge.

    • @lpimentel89

    What are you talking about? Mike won this race on Zenyatta. You're thinking about the 2010 Breeder's Cup where Z lost by a nose to Blame. Mike Smith did take the blame for that and was devastated. He got caught in traffic. One more stride and Z would have had that BCC, too, and been undefeated at retirement.

    I am a big Zenyatta fan. I also happen to be a huge Secretariat fan. Both are very good examples of a superb equine athlete. Secretariat could do it all, run several different types of races and win. Zenyatta is a stalker. It bothers me when people say she didn't run against a good field in the Breeders Cup because she did. To say otherwise is demeaning a lot of good horses. Do I think she could beat BigRed, no probably not. What bothers me more is the name calling. Just disagree and be adult.

    • @kwgrid
      @kwgrid 6 лет назад +5

      Blame's jockey, Garrett Gomez, said he would not want a rematch because he knew how unbelievably lucky he was that day. Dale Romans, one of the trainers (I forget which horse) said in a pre-race interview that whoever beat Zenyatta would have to run the race of their lives and that's exactly what Gomez said about Blame, that he ran the race of his life that day.

    Please, he's got over 5,000 career wins and a spot he very much deserved in the Jockey Hall of Fame. Did he make a mistake? Yes. Does that make him a bad jockey? No. It makes him human. He knew what he did wrong, and he never once put the blame on anyone but himself for that lose. He piloted Zenyatta through 16 career wins; if he were a "bad jock" he never would have been able to do that in the first place.

    Yes, Ruffian was pure speed. A truly great horse. I hate match races because they are so dangerous. I wish they had never agreed to it. She might be alive today. Yes, Zenyatta's 14th race and her last race showed just how great Zenyatta is. No horse on the planet could have come from 18-20 back and then inhaled the field at the end the way she did. Win or lose, she was the best horse there at the 2010 BCC.

  • @80cathryn
    @80cathryn 12 лет назад +1

    I did and this is one of them: Lucian Lauren, who was Secretariat's trainer once said that Ruffian may be even better than Secretariat. She was undefeated in her first ten starts over distances from 5.5 furlongs to 1.5 miles with an average winning margin of 8 1/3.. she won her maiden race by 15 lengths and in record time. She was always on the lead in every race. She also set new stakes records in each of the eight stakes races she won.

    She's literally running like the book "the black stallion" except she's even better as it's real life. The amount of ground she covers in just a couple strides. She seems to care less about the other horses, & is brimming with confidence runs as if she expects everyone to just get out of her way, and obviously LOVES the crowd and their cheers when she's allowed to let her rip all her jockey must do is hang on for let her do her thing and not panic at the slow start, apparently it takes a bit more time to get moving when your THAT big, furthermore she KNOWS that she's that big and obviously is a prima donna, as she knows she's a winner, expects everyone else to move, and doesn't give the other horses one iota of thought, she only cares about the cheering crowd egging her on, thus LOVING the spotlight.

  • @grantp4022
    @grantp4022 6 лет назад +2

    Although Zenyatta won the race --I think the Jockey is mismanaging
    her pace, and letting her get to far back. She obviously has the speed
    and power, so he should crank her up a little more in the first half of the
    race, so she wouldn't get to far behind.
    It's a lot of stress on the horse to make up a lot of ground, with very
    little time and distance to do it in. Secretariat often ran from behind,
    but not that far back--and the Jockey would rev her up about 1/3 into the race and he'd start to make up ground, and then start to close in
    This is what should have been done with this Superstar female horse.
    This Zenyatta is by far the best female horse I've seen. Incredible.

    You may be right. ALthough in Ruffians final race, she sprinted an incredible mile and a half just to prove everybody wrong...look up her last complete race on you tube. Watch the horses catch up to her and then she just turns it on and leave them in the dust when she feels them coming close. What a heart that horse had. Zenyattas 14th race when she comes out way wide to get around everybody on the back stretch is one of the greatest showings of heart ive ever seen in a race horse.

    A little bit like Sham in the 1973 Derby if you watch Gio Ponti, he makes a great move through the field on the turn to grab a clear lead - until Zenyatta sweeps on by. Zenyatta's super performance does not detract from the fact that Gio Ponti still ran a great race here.

    No, it wasn't the horse unless you count being a little too slow out of the gate resulting in being a little too far back....at least 20 lengths. And then Mike got caught in traffic coming home. Losing by a nose under those circumstances is uncanny in my opinion. One more stride and she'd have won. It's just the way it is in racing sometimes. Luck does play a small part.

    Such a love affair with her fans. When has a horse touched our hearts. Coming from dead last adds to her mystique.
    Add in her incredible size and spirit- and your end up with the Queen!!

    I have trained (mostly my own) from 1956-2004 at 37 different racetracks. The horses now are the best ever- the people a uninformed, lazy and incompetent. I took Queen to Conquer to the gate when she beat John Henry in the HP Gold cup- what a mare

    to give some reference to this performances: BC when he was a 3 yr old, ran 6 furlongs at his best was 1:09:96 or 1:10 while Secretariat ran 1:09 flat in a race that was 12 furlongs long. Sec finished that race with a stunning 2:24 WORLD RECORD that still stands 39 yrs later and a 31 length margin of victory that no horse since has come close to. BC and Z are remarkable in their zone - but true greatness is still measured by Secretariat.

    Now this comment is 100% dead on. You are absolutely correct with your assessment of Zenyatta's career. Thank you for pointing out the obvious!

    Amen, I am asked daily about why she wasn't in the Triple Crown and I have to explain her story, how they felt she had not grown into her body, I only saw love on the owners and trainers and grooms for her, always, Love you baby girl, Michele.

    No doubt about it. Her jockey would be the first to tell you she should have won that race. So close to perfection
