  • Derby dreams, no matter how unprobable, do come true. Favored California Chrome pulled clear in the stretch to win the May 3 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) by 1 3/4 lengths over Commanding Curve at Churchill Downs before164,906, the second-largest crowd in Derby history.
    California Chrome is the first horse bred in the Golden State in 52 years to win the Kentucky Derby, and just the fourth ever. The last Cal-bred victor in the Derby was Decidedly in 1962.
    The Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner, ridden by Victor Espinoza, got the 1 1/4 miles in 2:03.66 to give his jockey a second Derby victory. Espinoza guided War Emblem to Derby glory in 2002.

    Horses Chrome ran against were all fantastic athletes and gave it all they had in any race. So a horse had to be in top shape and love his job to run with this herd. Chrome was fantabulous. Don't see that since then. Probably why they retire them so early now a days.

    He coulda won by more, he was geared down once again, lol!....Us Californians know what we have in Chrome and that's a true Champion race horse who could win the Derby and go on to possibly win the Triple Crown. I knew he would win the Derby, his speed figures towered over all of his rivals. He'll win the Preakness too then go on to The Belmont and hopefully ration his speed and extra 1/4 mile which should be no problem. GO CALIFORNIA CHROME!!!!!!

    Walked into OTB and didn't even bet, I just wanted to see CC win this race and continue on to the Crown. Coming up to the Derby I saw that this horse was the only prospect for a Triple Crown and I just routed for him to win on that account. My favorite Derby ever!

    People please shut up about Secretariat, he was a freak of nature and you wont see another horse like that in a 100 years even if they had his bloodline and exact training methods.

      ***** You're right. It is a genetic anomaly...partly called the "x" factor because the genetic trait can only be carried on the x chromosome. The necropsy facts about Secretariat, Man O'War, etc. are interesting to research. Big Red's heart was over 2x bigger than the average racehorse.

    • @scottkelley1324

      Secretariat may have been a "freak of nature" but he was one of the best race horses born. His pedigree as amazing, and his racing was phenomenal.YOu will never see a horse that was that amazing. He was such a good racer due to his genetics. California Chrome and another horse called Hoppertunity both have strong bloodlines from him. California Chroma has a chance to carry out his great ancestors racing standards.

      Maddy Hagl I'm a Californian, born and bred and u won't find a bigger CC fan than me but Sec. was a monster. CC's story is truly unreal, costing 10k , every day Joe owners who got CC as their first purchase, how crazy is that?...Long way to go but Sec will go down as the best race horse ever. Hopefully CC will be a close 2nd!....:)

    Winning is Winning. Whether by a nose or by multiple lengths. The time doesnt matter. Chrome was the FIRST horse across the line..........Chrome is a hero..a superhorse....an equine inspiration to the equine world over. And if you fail to see that. Then that is on YOU. I have watched this colt run from get go. He has heart, presence, stamina. He is the best horse that stepped onto the Derby track that day. And if you can't see that, then that is certainly your shortness of insight. California Chrome has what it takes to win. He is as fit an equine athletic as one could hope for. He has proven himself a winner FIVE TIMES in a row CONSECUTIVELY. And you still want to mutter about him being an inferior horse? Wake up man............the horse is PHENOMENOL. He is an inspiration the world over for the underdog to rise. He runs like his great great great grandfather Secretariat...........He is as fine an equine speciman as anyone could hope for, whether owner, trainer, jockey or FAN. You better take advantage of your time and go watch his races again, because you obviously missed something that the rest of us see in this horse..............PRESENCE, CALIBUR, SPIRIT, SPEED, and HEART.

      Please, check a little history. Secretariat was a machine that broke the track record on all three Triple Crown races. Do not insult him. I understand you are excited and hopeful to have a new hero; but please ...

    • @ArchDandy1134
      @ArchDandy1134 10 лет назад +1

      Antonio Moya Sec led most of his races and was therefore influential on the time. CC likes to sit back, and is therefore NOT responsible for final time.

    • @Freddylikefood
      @Freddylikefood 10 лет назад

      ArchDandy1134 Another angle to your perception could be that CC is competing with average peers and measuring his real potential is still a ? or is running against a lesser generation of contenders? One thing is true and most people know, that in the Wood Memorial they used SCHIVARELLI as a rabbit to take advantage of the SI and his inexperience connections. As in the past, they did with Dr. Fager, when running against Damascus.

    • @kwgrid
      @kwgrid 10 лет назад +5

      ArchDandy1134 No, Secretariat did not lead most of his races. He was a closer and came from the back. Sometimes he ran up sooner and sometimes later. The Belmont was the only race that he went to the lead.

    California Chrome may not have won the Belmont Stakes, but if he gets to Santa Anita healthy and race fit come November, he'll win the Breeders Cup Classic!! Mark it down, as sure as sunshine. You go back and look at the replays of Chrome's wins in the San Felipe Stakes & Santa Anita Derby and you can make a legitimate argument he was just as impressive over Santa Anita's surface in those 2 races as he was at Churchill Downs in the Kentucky Derby or at Pimlico in the Preakness. His win in the Santa Anita Derby was particularly impressive.

    CC was cleverly run in that race as to position your horse in third place, take many lengths off you rivals at a two out and then look over your shoulder and wind him down is not supposed to be the way you win the triple crown races so this horse is not only special but we haven't seen the best of him yet and this makes sense as all the others in that race will of bust their onions running in a race Californian Chrome turned into a training run.
    I have studied many races over the years and its not always the times or the splits that point to future winners but the classic and consummate ease in which horses win their races.

    California Chrome... Most certain Triple Crown winner for Northern Dancer's Prodigy.
    Three times (3X's) interbred from Northern Dancer's DNA.
    Let's not forget the 1964 Record Setting Kentucky Derby Victory Race, by the underdog Northern Dancer !!!
    Northern' like no other athlete in the History Of ANY Sport(s). ACTUALLY CHANGED the Thoroughbred Breed, and the history of the breeding. In the centuries old Sport Of Kings...
    Canada's Athlete Of The Year, has also forever changed the future of his sport.
    There NEVER HAS BEEN, nor FOREVER WILL BE??? Another athlete to HIS or in any sport accomplish, what our 'Dancer had and still achieves!!!
    More than 90% of ALL Champion Thoroughbreds still to this day have Oshawa Ontario DNA. From their Northern Dancer bloodline!!!
    Not bad at all... For Our Northern Dancer who as a yearling himself in '62, NOBODY wanted "Too small for a Thoroughbred athlete" they said.
    Until he forever changed the history of his sport, like no other athlete. They'll NOW pay, still to this day, almost 30 years past his death. $Million$ more for Thoroughbreds of HIS conformation (shape) and Prodigy. Then they ever did before, or even wanted to look at, over many centuries. Before Our Northern Dancer's Dominance in the sport of Thoroughbred Racing!!!

    One thing is for sure, these DAP did something that most do not, their homework! Before they bought the mare they knew what she brought to the table as far as pedigree. They found a stud that enhanced qualities that others missed or passed up on. Without fail breeding is always a gamble but you have better chances and odds when meticulous time, studying and effort go into that breeding. This exceptional individual coasted this race. When they made the final turn, the jockey loaded his stick at 400 yards showed it to him 3 strides and never asked the colt, he just fired as he was encouraged to. Not the fastest time in Derby history but certainly NOT an "average" 3 year old either. Who are the dumb asses now? Many congratulations to the DAP team!

Isn’t that odd, that Sunday Silence was for 13 years the International sire leader, including USA and today, 2 of his sons: Deep-Impact (TC) and Heart's Cry are the top sire Leaders in Japan. Sad,as far I know, that we don't have a Sunday Silence stake or grade I or II to honor him and his great generation.

      It is despicable when owners of these amazing & beautiful horses SELL them to other Countries. No horse should be slaughtered. I worry about I'll Have Another. Boundless Greed is disgusting.

      ***** Yes moron I am aware that other Countries have racehorse/breeding programs. Are you aware of FERDINAND? here's a summary: "Ferdinand (March 12, 1983 - 2002) was a Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 1986 Kentucky Derby and 1987 Breeders' Cup Classic. He was voted the 1987 Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year.
      He entered stud in 1989 and was later sold to a breeding farm in Japan in 1994.
      Much to the outrage of many horse racing enthusiasts, reports indicate that in 2002 Ferdinand was sent to slaughter in Japan with no fanfare or notice to previous owners. He likely became either pet food or steaks for human consumption. Ferdinand's death was the catalyst for the Ferdinand Fee, an optional donation program to fund keeping old racehorses alive, and Friends of Ferdinand, a nonprofit group formed in 2005 with the goal of transitioning retired racehorses into second careers."
      I pray I'll Have Another does not suffer the same fate - you should educate yourself.

      La pista dura es más rápida, si esta pista estaba dura el tiempo es extremadamente malo. De hecho, la cifra de velocidad de CC en esta carrera fue bastante floja.

    Chrome is not a freak, he had a perfect trip in the derby and this years crop of 3 year olds is one of the weakest in years. Who did he beat while racing in california??? NO ONE!!!!!!! Sure he bested the rest on the derby day, I take nothing away from him. He ran the best race. He will tear the horrible field apart in Maryland. But like I said earlier he has not shown me enough to make me a believer that he will win his 3rd race in 5 weeks going a mile and a half. He will caught like others before him mid stretch on June 7th. Mark it down!!!!!!!

      I agree, casual race fans are all geeked up about CC and horse racing needs a great story but I do not see this horse getting a 1 1/2. The most logical horse to is Ride On Curlin, he got a bad trip in the Derby and the extra distance will help him in the Belmont.

    CC is a good horse running against a mediocre field. The great Secretariat would have beat him in his sleep. Seattle Slew would have hammered him to pieces & the wonderful filly, Zenyatta, would have not have given him a second glance as she breezed by. These are great race horses. Thier records speak for themselves. Secretariat broke all three track records in the Triple Crown. His record breaking Belmont run may never be broken. So many great horses...gone now.

      Actually, this has turned out to be quite a deep 3 YO class. Many are staying in training as older horses, which should make this year a lot of fun.

      Really ? Secretariat and Seattle Slew ? They were all 2 of the top 10 American horses of all time. Way to go out on a limb on that one. Chrome's Preakness time was right in line with Seattle Slew's.

    On the final stretch they really over did the crops, I'm all for using them on refusing horses, but the racing horses will either put there heart into it naturally, just don't force them to break themselves.

      Barbaro was the greatest horse since Affirmed and Alydar, and without that freak injury I believe he would have taken both the Preakness and the Belmont.

      too bad Alydar have been killed for greed and fraud.. the owner should have had his leg broke and then euthanized for justice of Alydar.

      news4usunshine Afleet Alex & Smarty Jones were both better 3 year olds on dirt than Barbaro. If Barbaro hadn't injured himself during the Preakness he still wasn't beating Bernardini that day...and heck, how great would Bernardini have been moving forward as a 4 year old. That field he lost to in the Breeder's Cup Classic was strong as they get!
