Race recap by USA TODAY **Spoiler Alert**
Giacamo shocks derby field winning at 50-1
"LOUISVILLE - Giacomo, a 50-1 long shot, came down the center of the race track and broke away from the pack in the stretch to win Saturday's 131st Kentucky Derby, resulting in the second-greatest payoff in Derby history.
n crossing the finish line a half-length ahead of another 50-1 long shot, Closing Argument, trainer John Shirreffs won his first Derby with his first Derby horse and jockey Mike Smith won his first Derby in his 12th try. The winner paid $102.60 on a $2 wager, in the second-greatest upset in Kentucky Derby history - Donerail paid $184.90 in 1913. Afleet Alex was third.
"I just felt like he could have run all day," said Smith, who was second in last year's Derby with Lion Heart...."

How many names did Durkin throw on that final stretch?!! Unbelievable race!
Wow! This was truly a heart attack race. The competition was down right amazing. So many great horses running so tightly together at a very fast pace all the way around the track. Fantastic Derby!
It's one of the most amazing races I've ever seen by a jockey and horse. The zig zag track that they had to take is remarkable to watch. 17th at one point and the in-out-in-out weaving that it took to get in space and make the run for the roses was breathtaking.
I met mike smith at champions day at Churchill downs on 4/30/19 he’s my 2nd favorite behind Kent Desormeaux.
BEST RACE EVER!!!!!GIACOMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This had to be last close Kentucky Derby. Looked like a 4 way dead heat at the top of the stretch. Don't see that very often.
Mike Smith was masterful when they got really bunched up in the stretch, it was amazing how he got him thru that.
Best Kentucky Derby. Amazing Giacomo.
Giacomo really mad me feel like shit when he broke his fetlock . I'll never forget watching his leg at the start of his last race .
A BRUTAL opening to this race. Alex was GAME AF.
Played Giacomo, Afleet Alex and Dont get Mad, in Tri. Hows that for close one. Friend kept mentioning Closing Argument.
$2 exacta... $9800... holy shit.
$2 superfecta... $1million... Wow.... The sequel
Afleet alex should have won the race if jr did not whip him too much on the right side that cost him to shift on the rail thats why he lost the race
One of the best days of my life. My best friend owned closing arguement. I had a $5 exacta 18/all, all/18. Hit for a hair under 25k.
Afleet Alex took a dead rail around the turn...Giacomo had the best part of the track and closed the fastest.
Giacomo was still dark back then! Now gray/white.
Buzzard's Bay, if you watch, ran a monster race. A mile and 1/4 was probably not his best distance but he ran a Monster imho. He won the SuperBowl with that effort.
I knew that was a key race. I just couldn't select Giacomo and his 3 by 5.
Incredible race and effort by all these horses. They were full tilt.
mike smith money mike
Giacomo/Smith -- It's one of the most amazing races I've ever seen by a jockey and horse. The zig zag track that they had to take is remarkable to watch. 17th at one point and the in-out-in-out weaving that it took to get in space and make the run for the roses was breathtaking.
Tell me how many people hit the triple....and how did they do it? Wao.
I had $25 to win on Giacomo and a $10 exact with Afleet Alex 2nd but he couldnt hold of a 70/1 shot. If he holds 2nd the exact was right at 1000/1.
I love it win the underdog wins.
The best 5 came out w/injuries. Giacomo was never better than a Grade 3 horse.
Actually he won the San Diego Handicap the following year
Mike Smith made a promise to Holy Bull, that if he ever had a chance to ride one of Holy Bull's foals in the Derby, he would win it. Because Smith always blamed himself for Holy Bull not winning the Derby. And Smith kept that promise. With Giacomo...
That wasn't Mike Smith's fault though, Holy Bull just didn't have it that day
I love it
Bra, what’s up?
what's up!

2019 there would have been a dq
This one was fine
Tom's call of this race was legandary
Lt.Dan one of the best race calls of all time
I think it's my favourite. He nailed every aspect of the race and made it so exciting.
One of the best race calls ever given from a track announcer booth
Justin Nicklas you aren’t lying how was that call by Mr Tom Durkin ??
i also think that was the best call ever
Afleet Alex should have been a Triple Crown Winner.. the Story of that horse and the little girl with the cancer would have taken the country by storm.. I love that horse, just a scrappy little horse.
Afleet Alex was definitely the best horse. It always sucks when a nobody comes out of nowhere to ruin it.
Afleet Alex was third best here, no excuses.
what happened ... did the jockey make a mistake?
Afleet Alex is a great horse and I wish he was a triple crown winner he almost was
@@pillowfighter86 Started him too early. In a blistering pace like that, conserve energy. He would have easily caught everyone asking with 3 furlongs to go. Alex went when asked and nothing you could do to stop him.
I love Giacomo! He was a tough, scrappy horse who survived against the odds! (He was conceived around the time a disease called mare reproductive loss syndrome hit and his owners lost a quarter of their foals to it.)

@@MoMoMyPup10 It really was! And Giacomo reminds me a lot of myself, as I survived a condition most babies with would have miscarried.
But totally outclassed by Afleet Alex who should have won the TC.
@@adrianashilling2573 I can relate to him, though, since I also survived something many don't before birth!
@@adrianashilling2573 Not in this race!
the blistering early pace killed Afleet Alex. He would get his revenge in the Preakness and Belmont.
Thank the Lord we are blessed with the sport of horse racing, especially the Kentucky Derby of my hometown (Louisville). I watched the Emily Elizabeth episode about Emily's first kiss on KET 2 after this.
And I'm glad I did.
Closing Argument was so overlooked... He had never finished out of the money coming into this race. It wasn’t a huge surprise to see him in it at the end.
