  • During last November’s election, we saw criminal justice and drug policy reform win big at the polls. Oregon became the first state to decriminalize all drugs, and voters overwhelmingly passed other reforms to drug laws, even in deeply red states like South Dakota. In addition, both the Vice President- and President-elect in their first addresses to the nation promised to “root out systemic racism” in the criminal justice system. The people have spoken, and we are on the precipice of a new moment for justice reform in America. Central to determining what this new moment will look like is the question of whether or not we as a nation move past one particularly old and dangerous habit: For decades, reforms have underscored a dichotomy between non-violent and violent offenses. It has been a winning strategy-but only for certain victories and people, and not without long-term costs. During this webinar, Kassandra Frederique, Executive Director of Drug Policy Alliance, and Danielle Sered, Executive Director of Common Justice, will be grappling with these questions and charting a path forward.

    About Common Justice:
Common Justice develops and advances solutions to violence that transform the lives of those harmed and foster racial equity without relying on incarceration. Locally, we operate the first alternative-to-incarceration and victim-service program in the United States that focuses on violent felonies in the adult courts. Nationally, we leverage the lessons from our direct service to transform the justice system through partnerships, advocacy, and elevating the experience and power of those most impacted.

Wow Kassandra. Just wow. Yes, yes and yes!!! You’re right about what we’ve done right, and you’re right about where we dropped the ball and where we need to improve. I had the privilege and honor of meeting you about a decade ago (and lobbied w u too) and I never cease to be impressed with you. Not to dis Ethan, but you’re making contributions and have a perspective that Ethan didn’t. He must be so proud of you. I certainly am. Thank you. 🙏🏽❤️
