Common Justice
США
Добавлен 11 окт 2017
Until we tell new and more complete stories about violence and its aftermath, we will never be able to transform our responses to it or to keep people safe and well. With Ever After, we are telling those stories: stories of who have survived harm and people who have committed it; stories of violence, accountability, and healing; and stories that will help us see things as they are and imagine what else is possible.
Common Justice develops and advances solutions to violence that transform the lives of those harmed and foster racial equity without relying on incarceration. Locally, we operate the first alternative-to-incarceration and victim-service program in the United States that focuses on violent felonies in the adult courts. Nationally, we leverage the lessons from our direct service to transform the justice system through partnerships, advocacy, and elevating the experience and power of those most impacted.

Our Core Practices to Change the Narrative on Violence
Просмотров 798 месяцев назад
For the last fifteen years, Common Justice has been talking about violence and we know what it takes to change the narrative surrounding it. We’ve been fed too many stories that demonize people who commit violence, conflate Blackness and dangerousness, center certain survivors at the expense of others, and limit options and imagination. People have seen police cars, precincts, jails and countle...

It's time we listen to survivors. Each year in the US, over 50% of violent crimes go unreported. Police reporting requirements for victim compensation prevents countless survivors from accessing life-saving funds. @govkathyhochul could change that and create real safety in our communities by passing the FAVC Act - urge her to sign it TODAY here 🔗 bit.ly/favcpetition.

Why we use 'harmed party' and 'responsible party' instead of 'victim' and 'criminal'
Просмотров 9283 года назад
In the criminal justice system, the words that we use to describe people matter a lot. They will often define a person for a lifetime. This is why it is so important that when we talk about people interacting with the criminal justice system we use words that are racially-equitable, humanizing, and holistic. At Common Justice, we provide an alternative-to-incarceration and victims services prog...

Hear what people are saying about "Just Mercy"
Will you work wt survivors in California? Need back up
Awesome
Thanks for sharing your story, Renard, and thanks for producing these stories, Aseante. They are so important. So many justice reform programs only focus on "perfect victims" or only "non-violent" offenders, I think it's so important to show the complexity and the humans are multifaceted and people can both commit crimes and be victims of great violence, whether from the systems of white supremacist patriarchy or capitalism or from individual people under those systems. We are all human, and none of us deserves to be locked up.
This is absolutely wild. Like you know about systemic racism and the inherent anti-blackness of policing, but to hear someone tell the story of getting stabbed in the head and the cops going "was this drug related?" is just something else. A common theme I've been seeing it a lot of these Ever After stories from men has been the desire to be vulnerable and be in a space where they're feelings are considered and taken seriously, and I feel like that's where patriarchy and the prison industrial complex are both so damaging, reinforcing toxic and isolating responses to these experiences.
Woah what an amazing piece of art. What a cool way to heal and reclaim your power.
Beautiful.
This is dope!!
Black Guerrilla Family rattling the bars of confinement and injustice.
Hell yeah, I love this fcking video! ❤
Wow I'm moved by how you are in the mind of a recovering addict offender, and women who is disgusted with the system the government and what this world is breeding. Pacified wealthy liars who will never admit to the current enslavers of systematically racist dominated world. Who make black girls and women look and dress and act like prostitutes and strippers and the black and white men who are bread to rape hate beat and take advantage of them in the worst ways and get away with it. Praying. Thank you for donations to libraries across the world. Can you send to prisons too. Because I have a prison ministry and can't afford to send one of your books to everyone of them. There in the state of mass discrimination and racist dominated world. Indiana State Prisons.
"correction." the holiday "Black August was created by a young Black-Haitian Activist form Miami, Florida namr Junior Olibrice back in 1997. i understand the significance of our history in the month of August, but ACTUAL holiday/term "Black August" was created by a young activist who along with activist group ABN(A Band of Nations also know as Abandoned Nations) was setup just like the Black Panthers under the guise of false charges.
Another co-opt. Mixing in truth to get attention and thing tail ending it with confusion. NO

Go Common Justice! Black August! I am a Black August baby...of the BPP...born of Bois Caiymon, the launch of the epic Haitian Revolution!...Baba Zayid Muhammad, Malcolm X Commemoration Committee NYC
Wow Kassandra. Just wow. Yes, yes and yes!!! You’re right about what we’ve done right, and you’re right about where we dropped the ball and where we need to improve. I had the privilege and honor of meeting you about a decade ago (and lobbied w u too) and I never cease to be impressed with you. Not to dis Ethan, but you’re making contributions and have a perspective that Ethan didn’t. He must be so proud of you. I certainly am. Thank you. 🙏🏽❤️
Okay why is there wt people in this
They're trying to co-opt it and water it down, like they do everything that doesn't include them. None of those ppl at the end of the video are ppl we pay homage to during Black August doesn't invite everybody to the cookout. It's about Black Freedom Fighters and Black resistance to oppression and exploitation.
THIS IS NOT WHAT BLACK AUGUST IS ABOUT. IT DID NOT START IN THE EARLY 70S. SHIT U DIDN'T EVEN BRING UP THE FLEA DAYS AND FUCCING "JOHN LEWIS" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤦🏾♂️ TAKE THIS BULLSHIT DOWN
Why are the white washed black politicians only being mentioned and not the actual Revolutionaroes that were imprisoned and still are? You can tell when white money infiltrates an organization.
CORRECTION, ,Black August Memorial did not start in the early 70s,it was original C,onceptionalized in the 1978 after the death of Jeffrey Khaualden ,known as the Black Dragon...And in 1979 that concept was full developed and in motion. Abdul Olugubala Shakur is a member and representative of the Organization that created Black August, and I has been actively involved in Black August since 1980
Is it a coincidence there was a military coup attempt in my country Kenya august 1,1982 ?
correction. the holiday "Black August was created by a young Black-Haitian Activist form Miami, Florida namr Junior Olibrice back in 1997. i understand the significance of our history in the month of August, but ACTUAL holiday/term "Black August" was created by a young activist who along with activist group ABN(A Band of Nations also know as Abandoned Nations) was setup just like the Black Panthers under the guise of false charges
Smfh. You've corrupted and coopted what Black August was about. There's no such thing as a peaceful revolution. And some of the people, and new age movements would not be tolerated.
Honestly, this white boy only looked up "Black August" because I've only heard that term in the context of Field Marshal George Jackson--a man whom I've come to deeply respect and admire. The fact that there was only a brief picture of the man and no mention of what he did and what he was really about is disheartening. After listening to this Comrade's words, had that intelligent man been given the freedom he deserved, I have little doubt in my mind that he would have written books and changed lives instead of--well--writing books and taking lives.
@@cda6590 Though new to this concept, freedom is never handed over peacefully, its brutally taken.
THANK YOU FOR SAYING THIS. SHIT JUST BURNED MY SOUL. WTF IS THIS BULLSHIT
You’ve got such a powerful story. Thank you for sharing it, Donna. It reminded me of parts of my journey that I haven’t thought about enough since getting out of prison
