    I'm liking this before I even watch it just out of principal.
    Meshuggah dropping an album is the biggest event since the last time Meshuggah dropped an album.

    Love the chatter that knows better than Meshuggah how much a riff can be used, he should start a band.

      I've seen this few years ago with Nostromo, the band reunited after many years and with the new tracks many people was like " it's not Nostromo, it shouldn't sound like that.... blah fucking blah"
      Obviously listeners know better than the artists how they should sound like!

      thats what i see in a ton of peoples' reactions, typically, to the less mainstream stuff,
      mostly younger people (coincidence? you tell me)
      basically their 'criticism' is just applying a checklist of how close it is to bands they like, or how well it accommodates an impatient amateur musician/listener

    The purpose of the drawn-out riff sequences is to put the listener in a trance-like state, a la tribal drumming. Meshuggah is a percussion band and the guitars & vocals are also meant to be used as percussive instruments. That's why Jens "barks" and always sounds the same and why the guitars "thump". They are the metal equivalent of a remote Amazonian tribe of Shamans

    once you lock in and find that groove, Meshuggah is a different beast. Even if it takes a couple listens. Dancers to a Discordant System is the grooviest song I’ve heard in a LONG time.

    Meshuggah are actually huge fans of 90's and early 2000's Electronic music and techno, such as Aphex twin, Squarepusher, and Autechre, so it makes sense that they utilize repetition and vibe within their songs. I quite enjoy this aspect of their music too. Too often I think bands write cool riffs and then deviate from it quickly. Riff ADHD in a way. Meshuggah on the other hand never leave a good riff or idea behind without thorough exploration.

    Armies was hands down my favorite track here, so pummeling

  • @LS-pe1rr
    @LS-pe1rr Год назад +5

    regarding armies of the preposterous, i disagree about the repetition. the first time i heard it i listened to it at least ten times in a row. they re intentionally pushing the repetition to subvert expectations of song structure. This is one of my favorite Meshuggah conventions, like catch thirty-three, they are intentionally not letting you escape the rhythm, so the next wave of variation hits even harder.

    Jens writes music for Meshuggah on top of being a vocalist. Meshuggah used to be a 4 people band back when they wrote Contradictions Collapse. Jens and Fredrik were both playing guitar back then and shared the vocal efforts. After that, Jens wanted to focus more on vocals for live performance, so that is when Mårten was brought in (Tomas and Mårten used to have an instrumental metal band back in the days before Meshuggah btw). :)

    Im about a month late on this but in regards to the vocals balance, meshuggah write music like they have 5 drummers. Jens has stated that the way he phrases his parts is so that the vocals can act as another part of the rhythym, and often help you follow the flow of the song better.

    I used to make fun of people who listened to meshuggah in the early 2000’s because I thought they were just another shit tier numetal band, but after learning to respect rhythm in metal over the years i fully vibe with em now as an adult. The ambience is beautiful in this album.
