      I would be too...plus another one of the greatest bands: Opeth...In Flames is great too! At the Gates(?) That's just off the top of my head and I'm from Texas. Meshuggah, though, is really special because it's like 5 extremely talented/borderline genius guys formed a band...and as Marten said "weird that we all wanted to do the exact same thing." Tomas barely changes the drum parts that whoever writes the riff programs because it's so close to how he would play it anyway; when he writes a song it's just slightly more rhythmically complex. On _Nothing_ Marten and Fred's writing are almost indistinguishable. After that Marten would be their most prolific writer.

      @@EgoblivionIn the 90's and early 2000s, I believe metal was Sweden's biggest export, and great bands and music was just flourishing. 😅 Like you said, In Flames, At the Gates but also bands like Opeth, Soilwork, The Haunted, Hammerfall, the list goes on.

    Yeah, Thomas Haake is one of the best for sure.🤘🏻 I didn't know this before but apparently he practiced for this song 6 months until he could finally play it live. Not only is this the most complicated drum beat ever,
    It is also incredibly catchy, hypnotic.

    • @targetbuddy5
      @targetbuddy5 Год назад

      One thing that helps this is that there's almost always at least one instrument hammering out a 4/4 beat, whether it's the cymbals and snare, the lead guitar, or the vocals, which anchors it a lot more than other math-y rock and metal bands.

      lol yeah he is incredible. I had a bunch of people in the comments of this video refer to his footwork and the Herta technique but like maybe I'm old school for the bass drums we called that triplets and the herta was a snare 4 note on a bar like the first note used was on something else like a tom or a cymbal then 1-3 on snare but I'm not deep into music theory though so.

    Tomas Haake is a big fan of Gene Hoglan, also known for playing open handed and being super technical with his feet. Maybe thats why he does it. He could put the sticks in between his toes for all i care, whatever he does it fucking works.

    As far as his style goes... he literally had to RE-learn how to play drums just to get completely through this song.
    Not to mention over 6 months of practice re-training his legs for the double bass (left leg single time and right leg double time) and doing multiple recording takes on each section to make it sound flawless for the album. Even afterword it took a while until he could finally play through entirely front to back live (ironically he said in an interview he felt this performance was not his best work!)

    so i think it's worth mentioning to you the drummer who inspired THaake as a much younger man--Cynic drummer Sean Reinert, who died in 2020. he played drums for Death in what i consider their best and most game-changing album in their discog, HUMAN. he was one of the first drummers to really take death metal drumming into a much more technical and jazz-influenced area. with Human, Reinert (just 19 during recording) threw down the gauntlet for all other drummers who wanted to do more than just blastbeats and get a good calf workout.
    there's a video about him that includes interviews with Haake, Gene Hoglan, and many other drummers, who basically all said that this KID, younger than all of them back in 1992-93, showed them all up and forced them to up their games. actually there are more than one video...but i think this is the one i'm thinking of:
    ruclips.net/video/iKJdCM-ngGE/видео.html
    one of the first lines was Haake saying he and his band sitting and listening to Death's Human, then having them turn to him and say, "We want you to play like THAT." his reply: "Me too."
