  • I've been meaning to make a video on the Autosampler feature on the MPC platform and finally got around to doing it! I had a little experience with it, but this time I dug in deeper and used my modular setup to do some creative sampling. It was super fun! Creating sampled instruments this way is excellent.

    What an amazing video! Side note: even on youtube audio the difference between the analogue and the sampled versions of the sounds are clearly noticeable. I own the Bass Station II so when I get the MPC I’ll start to experiment with sampling it :)

    What would be really nice in a future firmware update would be gate layering. For patches with long releases you get different sounds based on whether you hold the key down or just tap it. It would be cool if it would do the same as with velocity and take multiple samples of the same note but for different gate times. I know you could use the sampler's envelope and filter for those kinds of nuances but then you're not using your analogue synth's filter, so it changes the sound.

    Loved the video. I remember multisampling my fav Matrix 12 patches chromatically for 10 seconds into my Kronos and they never sounded the same... I guess the way voices saturate in the mixer stage has a big impact..
    I think its important to keep the interval quite low, also modulation is hard to sample... I prefer to add modulation in the destination... still you got some nice character I think.. I think something like the Iridium using grain might be the way to go for sampling modular patches... Still nice video!

    The auto-multi-sampler is one of the most interesting features of the MPC gear. Have been tempted to get one and sample like crazy, then build songs entirely on the MPC. It's like a childhood dream come true... all the features I wanted but didn't have back in .mod tracker days.

    • @TeftyMeems
      @TeftyMeems  4 года назад +3

      Yup, super powerful if you take the time to organize and catalog a ton of sounds. I think that’s my next step in this journey. Every time I make a cool modular patch, deep sample it before I tear it down.

    • @ToyKeeper

      Every video you make lately though, I mostly find myself wanting that Pro 3 in the background. :)
      (because I've been diving into a DAW lately, and a multitracked Pro 3 seems like perhaps the best synth for my style)
      Regardless, MPC + multisamples is a very appealing option, and I'm happy to see a detailed video on the topic!

      There is conversion , twice in fact. Digital to analogue out and once it hits the MPC analogue to digital. The only way it would remain digital is if it had a digital output and MPC had a digital input from it.

      @@jonathanthomamusic5131 I still use the Z8 because I have had it a long time now to make keygroups. Its multi-timbral so I can stack up to 16 keygroups, set envelopes and effects for each then I would use my MPC Live to sample that 16 keygroup stack. I find that the new auto-sampler is limited but quick and useful. The files from the Z8 load up into the New MPCs except you lose the envelope settings and effects you set in the Z8. The Z8 Is essentially the MPC 4000 in a rack version. Lots of power you have there dig into it. They are hard to come by now. I chose the Z8 for its processing power. Its auto-sample on steroids

    Dude that is the whole problem...the nuances get lost when sample in analog! I have my MPC 5000 still and use the spdif in out of high end AD/ DA converter. I went through hell to keep my old set up! I just couldn't stand the sound of the MPC preamps going in. It totally kills the vibe of the sound. I'm thinking of changing the op amps on the pres on my MPC now.

  • @johnvipond4407
    @johnvipond4407 4 года назад

    Isn’t it technically the same as just recording the instrument to an audio track? I may be mistaken here, but wouldn’t that mean there is no analog to digital conversion happening?

    • @richgreen9257
      @richgreen9257 4 года назад +1

      John Vipond: Whether the audio is recorded or sampled, if he is using the MPC it still has to go through an A to D conversion (to record) and another conversion (D to A) to hear the sound when you are playing it. If he was recording the modular synths direct to tape (avoiding the MPC altogether), then it would be all analog...and no conversion. Make sense? :)

    • @tuftyindigo
      @tuftyindigo 4 года назад +1

      It's not the same. The autosampling turns the recorded synth into a keygroup inside the MPC. You can then play the keygroup without having the physical synth there. It's not obvious in this case because he plays it with the Keystep either way, but he could (for example) take the MPC to a gig and still play the synth sounds with the Keystep while his modular synth is at home in the cupboard.
      The MPC is not an analog mixer, so regardless of whether you record into an audio track, play a synth live into the audio inputs, or sample into a keygroup or drum pads, there's always analog-to-digital conversion going on.

    • @TeftyMeems
      @TeftyMeems  4 года назад

      Still analog to digital conversion going on. The MPC is a digital platform. In order to sample, it goes through an ADC. When sampling there’s always some sort of trade off that occurs with the process. Thanks for watching! 🍻
