    You can turn off sequence looping and then it will record beyond sequence length for both midi and audio tracks until you stop recording.

    • @elusivemite
      @elusivemite Год назад +2

      Another option is to have your seqeunce length longer and set track by track lengths on the individual tracks.
      Il often have 4 bar loops running in a 16 bar sequence. Should let the audio loop further? Reduce length after recording as needed.

      I have to admit I didn't know this, thanks!! Especially for vocals this seems like a total solution to my problems. By the way, general preferences also has the option to change truncation duration, which by default is ALSO set to sequence length actually. So I don't know if you need to turn that to "as played". Probably have to...
      It srill doesn't solve how those parts are still a b_tch to edit though. And still no overdub available.

    A high quality reverb even if you can run only one thread in the entire sequence

    Yeah absolutely, the audio limitations hold it back - a really good device which could be great. In all honestly I'm not too bothered about any other updates or new features, but making audio tracks more usable and flexible would totally nail it for me. Extend the 5 minute limit is my number one request, with overdub a close second. Let's hope Akai watch this one too...

    For the first year of owning a MPC Live 2 I was going bonkers trying to figure out all the audio features you mention in the first part of this video. I thought overdubbing audio would be a foundational feature in any sampling unit. I eventually gave up and started working with in the constraints of audio tracks. I'm really glad to see you mention it, its great to find out I'm not crazy.

    • @PHeMoX
      @PHeMoX Год назад +3

      Yeah either the overdub feature is broken or it's just a total disaster to work with. I also hate how an audio track gets cut off past the loop point of a pattern. At leastttt give us the ability to save the trail of what we record live. It's so dumb. Also, it needs way more accurate editing tools. Touch screen touch is not accurate enough for a tight edit or cut of stuff you want out of an audio track recording. And we also need the ability to 'arm' a selected portion of an audio track so we can 'insert' a new live recording into it, like any other regular DAW would have.

    • @mrgreanjeans

    The ability to change time signatures in a project, so I can have a sequence in 4/4, and then a sequence in 3/4. or 7/4. or 5/4. Kind of a glaring omission. Please better CPU! And a Q link to CV. Would love to have LFO and Envelopes mapped to CV would be amazing!

  • @PHeMoX
    @PHeMoX Год назад +1

    Another thing we ABSOLUTELY need is the ability to play pads from pad banks you have loaded whilst playing a song in song mode that will initiate playing sequences for a 'song'. Especially for live performances it would be incredible to have a core background song going with live pad play on top, all using just the MPC One. I have no idea why we can't do that. The only way is manually switching sequences from the main sequence menu, which works but requires a bit too much on the fly switching of sequences to do live pad play along entire sequences, let alone multiple ones...

    I would love to use the same pattern on multiple tracks. So I can have just one track of chords, and that pattern could drive a Pad synth, a plucky synth, the lowest notes could go to a bass synth, and another layer could go through an arpeggiator. And if I edit one note on the pattern - it is updated in all tracks that use that pattern. That would be my dream!!

    I would like to see a track organizer and spectrum analyzer also you have to think of the MPC in a different way your kinda forcing it to be a DAW but there is another way the MPC actually can do everything you want it to the MPC is tweeker’s machine and thought provoker imho it really doesn’t need audio tracks at all I’ve been working with the MPC as a full stand-alone machine since the 3000 even back in the 3.5 inch floppy disk days you could do full songs on the MPC vocals and all trust me there is a way.

      @Marco-ek8wu Год назад

      Agree. I’ve been a user since 2000xl - bought new with a rather expensive fx card.
      It’s not a daw , it’s a sampler / drum machine and the more you want daw features the more you need to go and buy a laptop. That’s why the Akai force exists.
      I think the mpc one is the best workflow (for me and yes I did own the live 2), nice form factor, a program edit button!! but needs a battery and mic input.
      Software needs a visual eq, better reverb and to be stable.
      Arranging needs to be done with a daw as song mode is long winded but can be done.

      @@Marco-ek8wu the MPC (X) is kinda brilliant, with "clips" you can do a live performance on the fly as you can with Ableton accept the pads don't show the title of the clips you're playing. 2 of them synced via midi cables!

    I think MPC software could do with a re think...... I would also like to see a linux version of MPC 2... Shouldnt be too hard considering MPC runs on some kind of linux.
    Hardware wise I would really like a thinner version of the MPC one MK2 prefferably with knobs that push in to fit flush with the surface so I can slip it in my bag and take it with me more easily. Preferably with a battery!!!

    Great tip on the list editor! I've spent a good amount of time looking to edit 16 level pitches as well. Seems to me it should be in the parameter mod envelopes of the piano roll.
    Two feature requests I don't see often: Groove template quantize and better handling of odd time signatures. Groove templates in particular would really be useful for MPC community, and fairly easy to implement. Think they could get a lot of marketing juice out of it as well. Odd time signatures should be editable right from the sequence screen next to tempo.

    The most important thing I think is that Akai should really allow all 32 audio streams to be recorded, by increasing the track count from 8 stereo, to 32 mono(for choice and flexibility), and add a old school mixer interface like and 8 bus console, virtual tracks(that can be assigned to any track), 3 or 4 band parametric eq, ability to combine audio and midi tracks on the same screen in any combination to mix at the same time, etc! Basically they should implement the Akai DPS24(which is what I was describing) into the MPC which would make for a great audio recording, mixing, and sequencing experience that many would find familiar, in combination with the ever expanding new MPC features.

    I think it would be cool if there was a way to enter a project in different "environments". I'm imagining a Recording environment that declutters the interface for live recording and also allows for one take performance through a song. Maybe another Sample environment that explodes all of the tracks and shows them all in one place. This might help address what you are looking for to find the track you want to mess with and alter in whatever way you want. The software and hardware is so capable as a self-contained DAW that I think leaning into that is something Akai is experienced enough to do well.

    Great video! My wishlist: 1) When using chord progressions, I would love to be able to go to the custom section, then tap on the squares and type the chord I want to hear on them to built the chord progression and then play and hear it right there… I know there’s the option to import the chord progression but somehow it feels a bit cumbersome to do that. And 2) There’s no way to rename projects within the device!!! Come on, let’s say you save the project under the name “beat 1” for example and you work on it further because it’s vibing and you may come across an interesting title, well, you need to save the project “as” and then you can put the name you have chosen but it duplicates the project. This function could be put under when you press “shift” and then you have options like “load file” or “delete file”, etc… there’s no rename button which annoys me… maybe 3) Move the project onto… Anyway, the MPC rocks as well as you and Meems do on this channel ❤

    If the looper could assign the recently looped audio to a pad without having to menu-dive, I'd be very happy. Like, have a selector on the same screen with the ability to select with shift + press pad or something like that. Also, you should be able to get out of the looper screen and the looped audio should keep playing. For live performance, you should enter the looper, loop your instrument and return to the main screen or go to track mute or something else, and your loop should definitely still be playing.

An "overbridge" system with the Beats DAW would circumvent the hardware limitations. Would prefer it to work with Reaper and Ableton though, as I find the Beats software unintuitive. The cv expansion mentioned below would also be super cool as so many of us have eurorack and/or hardware with cv and gate inputs.

    I'll have to play around with the MIDI and Q-Link stuff more. I think a way to make things 'global' between projects(unless there's actually a way to do it that I don't know about) would be to create a new project, set up all your MIDI controllers and mappings, then save the project as a template.
    As for A=432Hz, I've never used it or had the desire to.
    Edited to add: Oh! Also, as I understand it, the MPC stand alone OS is based on a Linux kernel, which means they should be able to run it on much higher spec ARM-type. A quick search turned up units with 8GB RAM, which would be a huge boost to the amount of things you could have loaded at once. In a nutshell, it should be at least as powerful as my phone.

    Ohhh I forgot... Speaking of scrolling cursor / piano roll screen. We really need the screen to bring into view the notes we are currently playing. Whether when recording or when just playing without recording. The whole 'oh you played and recorded a note, now go find it on the piano roll screen' is sooooooo fking annoying. The MV8800 simply always snapped to the piano roll note played. And why the hell can't the scrolling cursor just follow the music playing the way any scrolling view would? The current implementation is horrible and makes no sense. It's very annoying to edit the end of a sequence both without scrolling and with scrolling cursor following the music played.

    Feature Requests:
    These new MPC 2.11 features are wonderful and welcome additions. However, I just hope Akai makes some simple usability and workflow improvements to these new MPCs and include features from the old ones (1000, 2500, 4000) that were left out of the new MPCs (One, Live, X).
    Examples of such features include:
    1. Selecting a note/pad or keygroup to edit by pressing a midi note from an external keyboard while in program edit. The MPC Key 61 does this with it's internal keyboard. The ability for all other MPCs to respond from a midi keyboard would be wonderful.
    2. The ability to copy a keygroup while in program edit when editing keygroups.
    3. The ability to copy/paste names while in the naming screen.
    4. The ability to switch the time display between (beats and bar counter) and (minutes, seconds, and frames or tenths of a second).
    5. The ability to input a fixed numerical value for all selected midi notes (or for all notes on a specific track) when editing note velocity for a selected group of previously recorded midi note events or all midi notes on a specific track (There’s a dedicated window for that feature in the MPC1000, 2500, and 4000).
    6. The ability for the MPC to remember the last assigned midi port, midi channel, bank select, and program change values (from the previous midi track) and pick up from there when creating a new midi track. This would save a lot of time when composing while using sounds from external midi gear.
    7. The ability to copy all sequence parameters of the current sequence (without the recorded midi event data) into a new sequence to use as a template for the new sequence.
    These are all workflow-related features that exist in older MPCs, such as my MPC2500 and 4000. They save time and make the machines much easier to use. Perhaps I should find a way to submit these "feature requests" to Akai to be implemented in a future update.
    I will also add these last four to the list:
    8. When double tapping on ANY field containing a numerical value on the MAIN SCREEN, display the virtual numeric keypad to allow the user to directly input a specific value instead of a pop-up list that forces the user to scroll to find a value.
    9. USB Multichannel/multitrack audio streaming.
    10. Anything that can be done to the software to improve/optimize the tightness of the timing and performance of the MPC sequencer (including when slave syncing to other midi devices and especially when slave syncing to a DAW) will be most welcoming.
    11. A screensaver mode menu option for the LCD screen to go completely dark and shut itself off while idle until it wakes up (just like the qlink OLEDs on the MPC X). This would tremendously extend the life of the LCD display and backlight.

      To a One from the MPC 60II, there isn't much for me to complain about.

      @kvmoore1 6 месяцев назад

      @coldskoolbeatz I think the MPC Live II would've been a better option for you based on the features you're looking for. Then again, the Live is a litte bigger and bulkier compared to the One. However, if the One had an internal battery and SSD drive, it would most likely be heavier and bulkier as well. I do like the interface of the Mpc One better, though.

    • @coldskoolbeatz
      @coldskoolbeatz 6 месяцев назад

      @@kvmoore1 Actually, I had the Live 1 when it first came out and returned it. The biggest reason was the form factor. It's just not as portable as marketed, and I couldn't just throw it in my bag.
      I recently discovered you can buy a battery, which I purchased, and velcroed it under the One along with an SSD, and a hub on the side.
      I bought a case for it and the only thing I need to unattach is the hub. The One inside the case can still fit in my bag with a JBL speaker.
      Formfactor is the ultimate deciding factor along with the dedicated buttons for me.

    • @kvmoore1
      @kvmoore1 6 месяцев назад +1

      @coldskoolbeatz Yes. I agree with you about the form-factor. I like the concept of the MPC Live regatding it's features. However, I find it a bit clunky with a less intuitive interface in comparison to the MPC One. I also own an MPC One and see it as a touchscreen MPC1000 on steroids. I think this is the most ideal form-factor for portability. It's just the right size...not too big...not too small.

    27:00 Technically you kinda "can" record to a timeline in a song mode, but you would have to create the basic song with all sequences and then 'bounce to one sequence' where you could export the whole song to mp3 / WAV. It's annoying, but from that point on, you could record to more of a song mode style continuous sequence. However, it's impossible to edit audio tracks in that way, so I definitely prefer not to do this at all.
    27:45 Unless I'm missing something about the comment, you _can_ add different versions of the same Hype plugin, so you'd just select that one for the next sequence. All it takes is adding an additional plugin to your project. You can also save automation for these plugins if I'm not mistaken. So I think this one is user error actually. I do agree the MV8800 has a superior way of allowing the user to tweak the internal bass synth though. In fact, the MV8800 has a more intuitive editing screen for song mode / piano roll mode also. I kinda hate the MPC One workflow when it comes to this.

    The 8 audio tracks limitation is also very annoying when we don't have a proper way of bouncing multiple tracks to one audio track. I don't really get it anyway, because with older MPCs they used to have streaming from / to hard disk, which means basically no limit on audio tracks there. I guess the MPC One/X/Live etc. load these audio tracks into active memory, which is kinda a bad design choice. I doubt it's really a fast solution really, loading that stuff at project load. I'd say 16 audio tracks would be way more acceptable, allowing for vocals + one or two live instruments into the device as more of a true all-in-one. And no, I don't want to use the PC to get unlimited audio tracks. Fck that. The reason I got the MPC One is for being an all-in-one more so than a midi controller for a vastly inferior DAW that doesn't really work at all.

    I don't see a reason why the sampler and the looper is a different tool (I understand from a music device standpoint, but software wise they could be easily the same)
    I'd really appreciate a step-based sequencer screen which is just a big matrix and then I could edit the velocity step-by-step. In addition to that, the current version also cries for an update, it's really hard to see, which section you're in, etc.

    Regarding your comment on x86 -> ARM architecture - if the code is compiled directly for the platform, it should in theory be close in performance requirements. If they just open it up to all plugins, yeah, then you're likely going to be running with emulation. I know that many NI and I believe all Arturia plugins have been made ARM compatible though and I have to imagine many other developers are doing so as well.

    1) on a working audio interface, ability to control volume of tracks coming in, without having to use an audio track, for processing, like a pass-thru audio but ability to use the effects. This would increase the audio tracks that can be used.
    2) ability to create 'arp' patterns or after playing a pattern ability to export as midi file and import it back to the Arp, to play out the pattern, in key and transposed.

    So many features implemented without solid UX. It's typical for a feature pushing team. I have the Force and the UX-fails are all over the place. One that stand out is the Software Sequencer. When editing parameters you lose the note position view. So you are basically blind entering parameters. For a sequencer that's a total fail. The first principle of a sequencer is to always be able to view note positions. It's those things that Akai let's go through to it's products. It can feel really hopeless. And I must I still love the Force. But it's a love/hate relationship.

    I don't know if it's been mentioned:::: but, please let us have a loop end point that is NOT the sample end .... so that we can press a key or pad, it plays the bit before the loop and then continues into the loop, upon releasing the key or pad it finishes playing the current loop and then plays the sample end.
    Obviously, for a simple sound you can just use the envelopes to create the sample end (using the looped section). But in a complex file, something may happen in the release part of the sample that you want to keep and not have truncated at the loop region. I suppose you could cut the end portion to a different key or pad and trigger on time, but it's a bit of a faff to do something that ANY decent sampler should do.
    Thoughts?

    -The overdub feature is missing for audio tracks. That's so bad. The MPC One has a looper already, it should support overdubbing already.
    -I also hate how an audio track gets cut off past the loop point of a pattern sequence. At leastttt give us the ability to save the trail of what we record live. It's so dumb to do a hard cut there.
    -Also, audio tracks need way more accurate editing tools. This is true for audio tracks recording, but also the piano roll screen. Touch screen touch is not accurate enough for a tight edit or cut of stuff you want out of an audio track recording. Why not allow us to dial in a start and end point of a selection? Or for nudging audio?
    -And we also need the ability to 'arm' a selected portion of an audio track so we can 'insert' a new live recording into it, like any other regular DAW would have.
    -I also notice the MPC One still does _some_ quantizing when it is actually switched off, which is kinda annoying if you want to do any off beat tricks. In fact, it should be fixed to a track in a sequence anyway, not the entire sequence.
    -Also, why the f does it select all sounds of a type when you switch from one pad to another? The times this is useful to changing the volume of say all hi-hats is negligible to how often it is a nuisance.
    -The sampler is annoying for how it will often trigger a record based on just background noise, instead of real audio you want to record. I no longer use the sampler to record my audio, because the audio recording is just more accurate for this and it's a bitch to trim a sampler recording to match an exact bar or 4 bar loop. Downside is, you don't get a tail for anything that has an echo or delay or fat reverb but still plays until the end of the sequence.

    yeah, the audio track recording department on the current MPC platform does feel a little clunky,
    that said, coming from an MPC60ii, ASQ-10 and 2000xl, - which have been my main sequencers over the last 30+ years, - the MPC1 is a great tool, especially considering the cost.
    Personally, the effects section, while powerful, is probably the one thing I'd like to see advanced the most. I like the *Akai* stock plugins, but I'm not feeling the *Air* plugins. Akai should approach Chris Johnson of *Airwindows* - that guy's plugins are amazing, and simple, both in their presentation and the code used, but Chris really understands saturation, tone and colour when writing code, -and with autistic detail, - and having worked with tape and outboard for many decades myself, I reach for his plugins all the time.
    ToTape5, Busscolors4, CStrip, DeRez are just a couple to checkout if interested in his work, all his plugs are free, as is the code, - but he's supported through Patreon.
