ThinkPad P50 Long Term Re-review!

  • My first-ever video on this channel was a review of my then brand new Lenovo ThinkPad P50. It's been a bit more than a year now, and people still ask me in the comments for that video how it's holding up. Not many reviewers go back and re-evaluate things they've already reviewed to see whether time has been kind to them, so I thought it'd be interesting to do that with this machine. It turned into a more in-depth video than I planned, with a full rundown of everything I like and dislike about the machine and a discussion of screen profiling and calibration - an important aspect to this high-end laptop with its 4K, wide gamut screen.
    If you're interested in a P50, Amazon still has loads of 'em available: amzn.to/2esVL1q
    Or the updated version, the P51: amzn.to/2vNtUvk

    I have been having this solid machine since 2016-06-01 and it still works better than any of the new machines. All what I did is that I increased its memory to 24 Gb. Solid, Solid Solid performing machine.

    I bought my P50 two years ago. I upgraded it quite a bit (64GB RAM, 2 TB SSD) and I am very happy with it. So happy, that I even replaced my main desktop computer by the thinkpad (+ docking station). Something I never thought I would do, because all previous notebooks were not even remotely powerful enough to do real work on them. The P50 is finally fast enough. When I need to replace it, I will definitely buy the successor!

    Interesting review, but I really must mention - you have the best intro ever - not 10 minutes of sweeping product shots or whatever, just clean and simple "da-nahhhhh!" and into the video.
    Good job, sir!

    I'm another user of p50. I'm using it mostly for programming on every day basis. The real drawback of this PC is the keyboard layout. I would pay even more if this machine could have an old classic ThinkPad keyboard.

    Great re-review! I also have my P50 for almost a year. I echo most of the observations, except the loose "H" key and HDMI/USB-C port. This is perhaps I don't use it as extensively.
    Separate thanks for pointing out the hard drive size in mm. I was trying to find the info whether 9mm hard drive is supported but could not find any. Thanks a lot!

    That is re-review many waited for! Good job. I am getting on mine P51 higher temps. - I will probably go with the difficulty of repaste + liquid metal. Mine had after 3-month dead 4K screen (same as yours LG) I am still trying to 'get' correct colors (also built in colorimeter, during change technician on site also coded in new screen into colorimeter) - I think that it is much more dark than my Retina MBPr15" 2017. It does behave "strange" - even with "smart fan" set to cool mode. I also have 4yrs On-Site warranty, but I will mod it myself.
    Regarding upgrades: you can go 2x2TB NVMe + 4TB 7mm 2,5" SSD -> 8TB SSD storage. Additionally P51 I have is 7820HQ (not Xeon) so only non-ecc RAM (up to 64GB). P51 also have multiple updates to the Thunderbolt controller from Intel (5 or more but they stopped to pop-up now and since 9 months no updates april-2019-> today).
    Newer Windows builds 1909, have some 'tricks' that solve issues with scaling much, much better - especially when moving windows between monitors - and automatically changed DPI. It does work as it should as of end of 2019.
    I am curious how you edit, I did have issues - I bought DJI Osmo Action (no H.265 codec) and 5 minutes of 4K is 5GB! So ... I tried to convert it with FFMPEG to 1080p, it takes 50 minutes for 5 minutes of 4K60 content to be converted - but the quality is very nice after FFMPEG. I do not plan now to fork out for Adobe (especially I avoid like a plague subscription-based apps). I am just interested .. did you do any conversions/edits of 4K60 on it and do apps use NVidia (I have Quadro M2000 in mine)?

    Watching this on my P50 work laptop.
    Mostly doing heavy enterprise development on it - so I've got 32GB RAM in mine, running several MS SQL instances + VS2015, VS2012, VS2017 ....
    I love this machine, and I loved its "predecessor" W540 which is very similar to this in every aspect...
    It's a powerhouse. I wouldn't want any other workstation laptop, besides perhaps the Dell XPS 15 (as it also comes in a 32GB configuration)....
    I do only have the i7 in mine and not the Xeon processor, but it's still a beast!
    By far the best work laptop I've had - ever - period.

    Just picked one of these up for under $550 off lease (pretty much brand new in original box). I was shocked to see that the original retail 3 years ago was close to $3400!!!! and I thought luxury overpriced cars where the picture book definition of depreciation. And a quick look around and you will see thousands (not hundreds) and thousands of these 3 year old mint condition P50 Thinkpads for sale around the web. Probably the best deal in the history of tech!

    I just found and bought a gently used p50 on eBay for a bargain. I’m not a fan of the look of Thinkpads, but I like their track record, build quality and power. After trying to use MacBooks and gaming laptops for CAD and rendering, I discovered that the P series Thinkpads are perfect for running Solidworks and the like. I’m planning on buying more ram and a new battery to have around once the original gives out. Long live Thinkpads!

    Thanks for the informative review. I'm trying to decide between the P50S and T470P or T470S (I can get any of these for a similar price, I guess because the P50 is an older model). I'm a graphic designer using Adobe software and what I'm most concerned about is the colour accuracy of the screen. The P50S doesn't have the built-in pantone color calibrator, but that's not an issue for me as I use a Spyder for calibration. I don't do video editing, so I'm not sure if I really need a graphics card. I'd appreciate your advice.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  6 лет назад +2

      Try switching to DisplayCal - it's free and it's much better than the included DataColor software. Setup is a little involved with a Spyder 4, but you only need to do it once. I followed this video and it worked great after that: ruclips.net/video/UMJnVmfChX4/видео.html
      The menus in the current version of DisplayCal are slightly different, but mostly they've just nested stuff, so it's still pretty easy to find everything.
      Colorimeters do supposedly age, though I don't know how quickly. But I've heard of people replacing them every 3 or 4 years since they may not be measuring accurately anymore. But try DisplayCal before replacing your Spyder.

    very useful. I have a very stupid question, in your color calibration you mention brightness at or below 200nits. that level to me, sounds very low to be able to use it in a averagely lit (or sligthly above average) office setting. am I understanding correctly that to get best color reproduction you have to sacrifice brightness at below 200nits?

    This is my second Thinkpad (had an X200 that went on and on and on...passed on to a family member). Mine is a refurb unit from a UK company who refurbishes ex-business laptops. I like their robustness :)
    After around 18 months I'm finding this is overheating - had to reseat the RAM one year in when it started giving me a single beep at boot up. Under light load with lots of tabs, it's fine..but if I try to load a game (a very "light" one, eg, Ubisoft Monopoly), it overheats and switches off.
    Fine, I think, these laptops are known for being easy to maintain. I start looking into cleaning the internals and you have to basically disassemble the machine to get to the fans?!?!
    Are there any tutorials out there dealing with P50 fan cleaning?

    Hinges getting stiffer after time is actually a bad thing, it means they are starting to seize , that's why you can see a lot of laptops from MSI, and Asus from early years with broken or spliced casings with even completely separated screens from laptops cause of hinges seizing up at some point and you basically brake your laptop non intentionally .
    If they become even stiffer try lubing them up, or if you don't see any difference after exchange them !

    Bought my P50 in 2015 and still using it, looked around to buy something new few times, but nothing worth money with similar 4k display. Running Debian unstable all the time.
    What failed during that 7 years:
    power supply failed 2 times.
    immediately as I bought it I added Samsung 950 ssd. works very well.
    I have 4k screen, matrix itself is amazing, and everything looks perfect in 4k. But I ended up setting up a key to switch 4k/1080p and 99% of time using 1080p - either software was not ready or i simply get annoyed too much as it heats up more in 4k.
    Typically thing is not even turning on fans in Linux - no need which is best thing about this laptop.
    I also had to disassemble it two and change thermal past - not really easy procedure, but helps a lot with overheating (which happens a lot if you decide to play some game).
    I also bought egpu and it work well in Linux, but not in windows - something horrible is indeed happening with thunderbolt in windows =) However, not using it much, I have it more because I have old DVI monitor.
    no mechanical or keyboard problems at all.
    i think year ago rubber thingy around display started to tear apart in 2 bottom ends and i am too lazy to find proper glue to fix it, not 5cm is teared.
    other than that it looks like new.
    battery is 64% of original capacity
    power on hours: 21199
    power cycle count: 4619

    It has been a good machine for me so far. Few problems. Win 10 crashes from time to time (what else is new?) but I've been able to minimize the crash problems if I don't simply put the machine to sleep all the time. I've read that sleep mode tends to make Windows want to crash. Don't know if that's true, but if I sleep less and reboot more, I do get fewer BSOD problems.
    One thing I'd change if I were to get another machine like it: I'd skip buying the on-board color profiling setup. That money would be better spent on dedicated profiling hardware/software. I found that all of the links (for, say, help) within the profiling app don't work. It wasn't that they worked at first and then broke later. They never worked to start with. This appears to be by design! I contacted Pantone about it and while they didn't comment on the non-working link problem, they did say that Lenovo prefers to handle support for those tools - they passed the buck. Wish I'd known it at the outset. Lenovo is not a color-management specialty company. Yeah, next time I'll get a product dedicated to that kind of adjustment.
    You mention possibly doing a video about monitor profiling. I hope you'll have a chance to do that. It'll be worth watching, I'm sure.

      I haven't had any problems with sleep mode. Might depend on the specific hardware that came with your machine and the associated drivers. There have been some isolated periods of a week or two when I've had lots of unexplained crashes in a bunch, but they go away once whatever driver's the culprit gets updated. Those periods have been few and far between too; it's maybe been a couple of times over my length of ownership.

    • @mikearst2940
      @mikearst2940 6 лет назад

      I can't say for sure if sleep mode is the culprit. I get fewer crashes if I reboot semi-often...and of course it might not have to do with sleep mode.
      Do you have any recommendations just now on colorimeters and associated software? There's ColorMunki. And the X-Rite products. Once thing I noticed - too late - about the P50's built-in hardware/software is that I don't have any idea where it stores the updated monitor profile. Once in a while an application wants to know what your current monitor profile is. Haven't a clue! With the third-party stuff, I'd know exactly where it is and what it's called.

    • @mikearst2940
      @mikearst2940 6 лет назад

      I use a non-Microsoft command processor that has its own "reboot" command. Two switches are used for "sleep". I use its "/w" switch. I assume the other ("/h") switch is equivalent to "hibernate":
      /w - Turn off monitor and hard drives. On restarting, desktop is restored to the original state. (Not a complete shutdown.)
      /h - Save everything in memory to hard drive. Shut down. Desktop is restored to the original state on restarting.

    Sounds like the keyboard/trackpoint is an issue. I have 2 w520 and they still works very well. I do not use the trackpoint at or the pad if I can avoid it. But I do use the keyboards and wear is a minimum.
    That said, when possible I use an old SUN external keyboard, close to 15 years old? Still running great. The IBM can't beat that! Soft, firm and not noisy!

    Just a side note I'm surprised that the replacement FRU backlit keyboard for the P5x/P7x series are quite expensive to replace ($150 new/$100 used) and hard to find. And yeah as a longtime Thinkpad owner anyone owning a Thinkpad for more than 5 years will eventually want or have to replace the keyboard. In the past FRU keyboards were like $50 to $70 new and $20 to $30 used. I'm not even gonna tell you what the pantone/fingerprint palmrest cost for this P50.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  4 года назад +1

      I did have to have my keyboard replaced under warranty. At that time, it was something like $50. I didn't pay it but it was on the invoice. They've probably gone up because the computer's out of production. I know the battery has gone way up in price too, which is annoying because I've been thinking of buying a second one basically ever since getting the computer, and never did because I never really *needed* one. But now I can't financially justify it.

      Still great. Mine works perfectly and I've really had no desire to replace it with a new machine. The display is somewhat less bright than it was originally, but I don't take it out in bright sunlight - I use it at home (and before that, at my business), where I control the lighting. It's been fine.

    • @ModernClassic
      @ModernClassic  6 лет назад

      Yes, Windows 10. As for your second question, I assume you meant Dell... it's about the same as my old XPS 15. Usually it's silent. Occasionally the fans spin up for a minute or so and then die back down. You can definitely hear them when they do that. Obviously they do it more under load, so if you're doing something CPU- or GPU-intensive for a while, you're going to have fan noise. There are thermal profiles you can set in the Lenovo software to allow for more silent or alternately cooler running. By default I think it's set to run as quiet as possible (minimal fans) on battery, but you can also set that for when it's connected to power too. I might not recommend that, though.

      How is the color uniformity and motion blue of the 4k screen on the P51?
      On my XPS 15 which I'm likely to return has green on the left and pink in the middle. It also suffers from motion blur where black text turns green when scrolling.
      I'm very sensitive to uniformity and blurring especially when scrolling through text on web pages.

With the lid open, loosen the screws without removing them, close the lid and tighten the screws. See if that realigned the hinges. If not, the other hinge mounting screws under the screen bezel might have to be loosened, the lid opened and closed several times and retightened to realign the hinges. Recently my Lenovo P50 Laptop suddenly won't turn on. It turns on for only 1second, with the green power button and keyboard lighting up for 1 second, then it immediately shuts down. When I plug in the power supply, the green light on the back of the computer lights up when I have the battery installed. So it doesn't seem to be a power supply issue. I searched all over the web for solutions & tried doing power drains, unplugging/ plugging in the battery & power supply, running with just the power supply, running it with just the battery, & both battery & power supply. I did the CMOS battery resets, removing HD & ram then trying to powering it on, but I get the same result.
    Have u ever dealt with anything like this with any Lenovo laptops you've worked on? Do u have any possible solutions? Please let me know. Thanks & have a nice day.

    I wish they brought the classic keyboard back and added a bit of depth to the machine so there would be room for better cooling and improved audio. Was considering getting a P70 or P71 until learning about the white list for the mxm and the speakers being like two coke cans and a piece of string. I despise ultra thin laptops anyway and casual users dominating the market ruined it for everyone else. Rest are locked to one ssd and 2 ram spots... just not appealing to an enthusiast. Also it was only 500 bucks in 2022 and works great still.
