If its hospital debt, file for charity care. ([Hospital Name] Financial Assistance Program) If you've already paid for it, and you are eligible for charity care, you are entitled to a refund. Nonprofit hospitals (most are) are required to write off medical debt for those that meet the income requirements. The deadline is 240 days from the date of the first bill. If there are extraordinary circumstances, Doesnt matter if its gone to collectiosn or not. In fact, upon making the complete application, they must stop all Extraordinary Collection Activities which include collections, lawsuits, etc.
