Love watching your vlogs! This route looks amazing, but then again, those Donny Osmond pants!!! 🤣 Seriously, it's so beautiful! NOTHING TO FEAR! John & Bev
@theflyingfinneys I'm sure it is. I'm thinking about doing it myself. I've been to Vietnam 4 times over the last year. Thanks for sharing your adventure. It's amazing to watch her step way out of her comfort zone. How do you say it in Aussie style. "She is a Legend!"
I've had numerous International Licences over the years but I never read the fine print! I had no idea they weren't valid in certain countries, Vietnam isn't a country I was ever planning to drive in, crossing the road is chaotic enough!
Very informative. Thank you for sharing. I have a question on the licence issue, we are about to travel all over asia and are not sure which licence to get now. Do we need both the one from the Australian Automobile Ass AND from the International Driving Ass one so that ALL countries are covered? Or does the second one you bought cover all the same countries as the AAA one purchased here in Aus??
Hi - Tracey and I probably have different views on this one. In hindsight I would probably get the online digital IDP rather than the Australian one as it worked in Vietnam and appears to cover the same countries as the Australian issued IDP. I also like having it on my phone rather than another piece of paper that has to be protected (Tracey is more of a paper person). We have also driven in Taiwan and Thailand - rental companies did not ask to see IDP but we were not stopped by police to confirm requirements. We are currently in Morocco and are waiting to be stopped by local police to see whether we need an IDP:) But the onus in all countries we have visited appears to be having an Australian issued drivers licence in the first instance. In terms of IDP I suspect the non-Australian version will meet requirements. Best wishes for your travel. Thanks for watching👍
Trying to attach a screenshot of the countries covered in digital IDP but can’t seem to do it through RUclips. Please feel free to DM through Facebook (theflyingfinneys) and will forward to you.
Hi great video, Do you both hold motorcycle licences in Australia? What Website did you use to apply for you Digital IDP? Did the actual digital IDP look different to your original IDP's that you got from Australia? I ask this because as you know Australia has not signed or ratified the 1968 Vienna convention for road & traffic rules, Australia is a member of the Geneva convention 1949 for road & traffic rules ( Vietnam are not), so legally no IDP is valid for Australian's riding or driving in Vietnam accompanying a Australian driver's licence. I'm thinking possibly the police just accepted your Paper IDP , not knowing the difference between the Vienna & Geneva conventions articles. I am riding the loop in October 2024 for the 2nd time, my first trip was in October 2022 and I didn't get stopped once bt police, however I understand that they are more prevelent now. BTW, the fine is 1.5 million Viet Dong for riding without a IDP in Vietnam.
Hi, thanks for the comment:) Tracey and I both hold Australian unrestricted M/C licenses. Fully agree re conventions - we caught up with an Australian the night before we headed out and talked through the different laws etc. He had been stopped twice (beginning and end of ride on outskirts of Ha Giang) and recommended we get an updated digital IDP (which we did). We were stopped once - police were definitely on the lookout for Australian issued IDP. When we produced the ‘new digital IDP’, we were let through - even though it appeared to be based on the same convention as our Australian issued IDP….it did however show Vietnam on the list of countries approved - so yes, it looked different and once I pointed this out to the Police, we were good to go. I think the link to the website was in the video but will check this and get back to you. Safe travels and stay upright!! The Flying Finney’s (Graeme and Tracey)
Oh no, that’s a shame. It was quite a shock to us when we found this out as we were about to start the loop. I had done so much research and never saw that this could be a problem. Hopefully you can do the loop soon.
@theflyingfinneys my research pointed me to the correct technical idp issue, even spoke to one of the big rental companies they said the same. No one gave your solution of applying a idp in nam itself to get the 68 idp. Can you pls post the whole process or make a video of this iam sure it will be helpful for all. Cheers.

Geez I haven’t thought about Donny Osmond in a long time 😂
