      Absolutely. Without it, it's a paperweight. Get training, continue to practice and follow weapons safety rules. The extra time it takes to chamber a round isn't worth it when it comes to protecting yourself or others. Personal opinion of course.

    I once heard somebody say "Not carrying with a round in the chamber turns a handgun into a two handgun" and those words stuck with me. It is very unwise to give up that off hand in the event you need to draw your firearm. What else could you be doing with your off hand? Shielding/moving your family behind you maybe? Guarding your head from an attacker charging you with a blunt object with the intent of hitting you? The list goes on...

    The first time I racked a handgun I realized a few things:
    1. It's harder than it looks
    2. It takes longer to do than I thought
    3. Adrenaline will make this much harder to do
    4. I would be screwed
    So, a bullet in the chamber it is. Not having one in there means my gun kills me without me ever firing it.

    I would never carry with One in the chamber around my kids! I have five boys under the age of 12 and although I want to protect them it gives me a peace of mind that it takes one extra step! I know most gun guys think they're badass gunslingers and everything is black and white but when it comes down to it everybody's situation is a little different! Personally I think it's a shame on the gun community that they're so biased. Statistically just pointing a firearm at someone most of the time will end a situation. I do agree that having a round in the chamber makes a lot of sense for a lot of people but not for everybody there's a lot of new gun owners in America as of late who have very little gun safety or practice at the range. I'm not going to advise a young mother who has very little training to keep One in the chamber around her young ones unless she feels comfortable/competent and or has children with a maturity level equal to the task to be around firearms! Many might say well then they shouldn't own a gun that's cute and fine but the problem is there are thousands upon thousands of young mothers and young adults with little or zero training in America that do own firearms.

    Someone once said "not carrying with a round in the chamber is like thinking you will have enough time to fasten your seatbelt before an accident". Most self defense situations end in 3 seconds. It takes a 1/4 of a second for your attacker to pull the trigger. That 1/4 second can mean the difference between you walking away from the situation, or your attacker. So ask yourself, wouldn't you want every bit of time you can have to your advantage? It is literally the difference between life and death.

    The average human can sprint around 12 mph or 17 feet per seconds. That means if someone of average build rushed at you within 17 feet they can reach you under 2 seconds. It takes some people 2 seconds just to pull out and fire their gun.
    Now if you don't have a round in the chamber, racking your gun could take another half of a second. By that time your attacker could be on you and you might not even be able to aim and fire. This is the reason why I carry one in the chamber. Every second counts.
    This scenario is only for attackers without a firearm. Now if they did have a firearm do you think they will even let you rack your gun?

    I think its extremely more dangerous to NOT have a round in the chamber. If something happens, no matter how good you are, your nerves and adrenaline are on overdrive and you have no time to pull the trigger only to find out there's no round in the chamber. Things happen in a split second , and you literally may not have a second or two to rack the slide.
    When I first started carrying I would keep the chamber empty because I didn't trust myself at first. Once I got past that, and got more secure and comfortable carrying a gun around , I decided to keep a round in the chamber at all times. One less critical step to think about.
    I just want to draw, present and fire. Don't even have to think about that.

    I’ve always considered the concept of trying to rack a round in a self defense incident to be logically similar to not wearing a seatbelt and expecting to put it on right before you crash.
    Curious if anyones got any thoughts on that thinking.

  • @KevinFrost
    @KevinFrost 2 года назад +7

    Personally, I don't carry with one in the chamber. This is because of my own circumstances. I don't have enough money or time to get to the range often enough to feel confident in my own safety of handling a loaded gun at all times. I hope that one day this will change, but for now (even though I have been carrying for over 2 years now) I don't carry with one in the chamber. I know it will add to my response time if I ever need to use my gun for self defense, but I feel better knowing accidental discharges are an extra step away until I feel more trained.
    And for anyone worried I'm carrying a gun without training, I have my concealed carry permit, I watch and read firearms safety training content almost daily, and I try to get to the range about every 2-3 months, as my budget will allow.

Many in the gun community have watched way too many action movies and are a little confused about reality and everybody's unique situation I'm not going to tell a single mother with five kids who has never gone to the range or very seldom gone to the range to carry with a chamber in the round that is insanity but it is never brought up in the gun community shame on them!

      First of all, you will definitely require both hands if you find yourself in a defensive shooting. If you have been grabbed or are carrying a child or have an injury in your non-dominant hand (or have any other reason why it is unavailable) then you will not be able to use your gun. Obviously it's your choice, but it definitely has its drawbacks. Second of all, you don't need to spend a lot of money in ammo and range fees to get good. I highly recommend you do dry fire drills. I applaud and encourage everyone to carry, but understand, if you carry empty then your training should definitely include a slide rack immediately after drawing from the holster and get good at it. But by the time you master it you’ll be confident enough to just rack it, put it in the holster and proceed with the day.

    I've had this conversation many times over the years. Honestly, if you train to draw a firearm and chamber it while acquiring sight alignment, more power to you. I think you can learn to do that very quickly if that's your preference and you train diligently with that method. Most of the people I've known over the years who carry unchambered don't actually practice that though. They get to the range, take the gun out of the case, load up their mags, then chamber a round when they are ready to start shooting. They then take their time lining up the sights on the target prior to taking their first shot. I've never actually seen them run draw drills. So in a real life situation, things will likely go how this guy is saying they will go. They'll spend nearly two seconds figuring out and fixing the "malfunction."

  • @Maetsack
    @Maetsack 2 года назад +4

    Your logic is decent, right up until the point where you say you need that extra one second to make your gun ready. The overwhelming number of encounters in which a gun is drawn by the good guy are not shootouts in the street at high noon. There is notice of a threat and the good guy can draw and engage when it makes the best sense to do so. And if that means drawing and racking on the draw (especially if that is how you train) that becomes one fluid motion with virtually zero time lost.
    All that said, I agree. There is no risk carrying with one in the chamber, especially with modern firearms so it comes down to comfort level. Personally I prefer to carry with the chamber empty cause I know it's empty and I rack as part of my draw. But it comes down to choice and the practice you put into making that choice work for you.

    • @christopherwg4236
      @christopherwg4236 2 года назад +2

      Yes and one thing that the gun community forgets is new shooters they're thousands of young people young mothers ,single fathers who have children around and nobody's talking about some people's unique situation which could be dangerous to keep One in the chamber example a single parent with autistic young children! Me personally I've had people say what you need to train your children while I have five children three of them very young and I'm still not comfortable keeping One in the chamber around them it's one extra step statistically I think it's more dangerous to keep one chamber.

    I don’t care about a safety on a revolver because of the heavy double action trigger pull, but I will not put it in single action for defense. I carry a j frame on occasion, so it does help to train the double action trigger.

    True, how ever i think one option is to include racking the slide into your draw training, hence removing chance of negligent discharge well as accidental discharge when holstering or carrying. I agree one should be able to respond to treat fast as possible, but its debatable if 0.25 seconds has effect on that. I'm not commenting what ever safety or feeling of a safety is better than saving that time in draw, but just pointing out that there is that possibility, nor i wish round in the chamber be banned since its more about individual freedom to choose what works best for them.

    Not only do things escalate in a matter of seconds, but in the event your arm becomes disabled from a knife attack, baseball bat breaking your elbow, getting shot etc, you can draw your firearm and begin defending your life or the lives of your loved ones with one hand. Just the thought of being helpless with one arm down scares me more than carrying with a round in the chamber with the safety disabled.

My own personal experience when I first started carry concealed was not to have one in the chamber, then I watched a video on how long and hard it was to chamber a round in a stress situation. I didn't like how long it took and the fact when a firearm had to used, I would want it to go bang instead of click at that point.

      Another thing that should be considered is that just because a person is hit by gunfire does not necessarily mean that they are out of the fight. What happens if a person is hit by unexpected gunfire in their weak arm? They are able to draw their weapon with their strong hand but now unable to operate the slide to chamber a round. It can happen!

    I carry a revolver, so with only 5 or 6, depending on which one I'm carrying that day, I don't want to diminish my ability to defend myself even more. But even when I was carrying a semi-auto, I always carried with a round in the chamber. THAT one isn't going to jam! And I really think carrying without one in the chamber will add a lot more than one second to the time it takes to fire. 1) The other guy isn't going to just stand there and wait for you to get ready. 2) You'll most likely panic. 3) Your coordination will bid you adieu. 4) Etc., etc., etc.
    One statement I would question though, is the need for a Kydex holster. A good quality leather holster will hold the gun just as securely as Kydex, and prevent unintentional actuation of the trigger. Even a soft holster, such as a Remora is available with a reinforced (Kydex) top.

    I've seen a video of someone drawing, chambering and firing in under 2 seconds. My response to him is that a flat range is not real life. You might have someone on top of you. You might have someone trying to grab your gun. Plus, the added stress of someone trying to kill you greatly diminishes your motor skills and cognitive function. The only way to train for that is, unfortunately, to get in actual gun fights. So you want to make things as easy and simple as possible.

      It's much more complicated than carrying hot or not. This video is on focused on part of the entire scenario and mind set when carrying. If you let a person or persons get close enough to attack you without you noticing and get on top of you, you're not practicing situational awareness. If you allow yourself to get cornered in a situation with while under attack, you're not practicing situational awareness. If you haven't trained and educated yourself on the leagility and when non-lethal force is legally justified vs. when lethal force is legally justified, you're not practicing situational awareness. If an attacker reaches for your pistol and is successful in disarming you, and your pistol already has one in the chamber, you'll be killed with your own pistol. The best advice is to train to recognize the situation and bail out in order to avoid wasting ammo and having to fill out a bunch of paperwork. Drawing and firing is the last resort. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

The only externally visible safety is on the trigger itself. There are two other safety devices internally. One stops the firing pin. Glocks are always cocked. Ammunition choice is also critical as you are responsible for whatever damage the projectile does before it ultimately stops motion.

    The rhetoric around this issue is so astoundingly stupid.
    Is having one in the chamber dangerous by itself?
    No.
    Does having one in the chamber increase response time?
    Yes.
    Does that automatically mean everyone should carry with one in the chamber at all times?
    Well no, obviously not. Circumstances change, and the reason you are safety concerned also changes. If I'm going into a dangerous neighborhood, by myself, the risk calculation is very different than if I'm taking 6 small children to chuck e cheese, where one of them might suddenly grab at my belt. I live in Alaska. Here in Alaska, odds are about 99% that if you use your weapon, it will be against an animal and not a human, meaning all the rhetoric about how quickly someone else can attack you with their gun goes out the window. In South Central LA, you would not run into a moose if you spent the rest of your life searching.
    This is all aside from the central idiocy of the argument that you should at all times carry with one in the chamber. Yes, it does slow your response time not to do so......... but so does lots and lots and lots of things that concealed carriers do all the time. Appendix carry is slower than a hip holster. Guess you can't appendix carry. I hope you never look in your trunk, or climb a ladder, or check your phone, or become interested in conversation, because all of those things reduce your response time by similar degrees as not carrying one in the chamber. So either response time is a budget, and people should evaluate response readiness based on the needs of their own life, or the people claiming that everyone MUST carry with one in the chamber are hypocrites.

    Why do you carry if you're scared of the tool that is supposed to protect and defend you and your loved ones? By not putting a round in the chamber, you are creating a conundrum for yourself that will spiral out control because you will allow FEAR control your decision making process.
    Do you FEAR the bad guy more than the POSSIBILITY that it might go off? Then the bad guy wins automatically.
    Are there alternatives to lethal force? Yes. You can get a can of pepper spray or a knife Oh, wait a minute...the pepper spray could accidentally go off...the knife might cut me when I don't close it right...
    It goes on and on...
    Overcome the fear through training. Don't let the FEAR [of a round in the chamber] let the bad guy win.
