    Short answer, get an antenna. The problem is that some people are used to watching channel X no matter what. Say you have an older person who everyday has to turn on channel x to watch the news. Trying to get them to navigate through an app can be nearly impossible.

    For a makeshift antenna, you can just cut the end off of a coaxial cable, then strip about 6-7 inches off, leaving the exposed copper wire. Place it somewhere high (I've got mine secured up near the top of a window) and plug the other end into the cable input in the back of your TV. Only one of my TV's has an actual store-bought antenna. The rest of them have these coax cable antennas and get just as good reception.

      It would be great if the big media companies, Viacom CBS, FOX, Disney, and WarnerMedia, and NBCUniversal allowed services like RUclips tv to allow for pick-and-pay tv service that would let users pay for cable channels that they watch, instead of a bundled plan of cable channels with channels that they don't watch, but with local channels still bundled. So that users can pay 5 a month for Bravo, and 20 dollars a month for their local ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, PBS, and The CW stations. That would also be great for cord cutters who have a short list of must-have channels, and for people who can't get their locals with an antenna, and are trying to save more money. The media companies might think about this and decide if they want to allow this, if they are watching this video, and reading this comment. But, for now, your just gonna have to go with what you have.

    I am pretty sure it's actually a requirement for TVs to pick up local channels with out a service. However, your video has nothing to do with really getting local channels but streaming services.
    Honestly, when it's all said and done. Local channels should be provided by antenna or if you have a internet service, it should be included in that. Especially seeing how we can't use our old tvs any more.

    • @MichaelSaves

      @@urs915 Yes, and in many places you can do even better with two antennas. If you have some stations "over there" and some other stations off in a direction at 90 degrees combining two antennas can get you more stations. I went from about 60 channels good enough to watch up to 120 by doing that with attic antennas. With less fear of heights, outdoors antennas would have been an option.

    • @kensmith5694
      @kensmith5694 2 года назад +1

      @@urs915 Splitters do lose a small fraction of the power but not much. When used as a splitter, they divide the power in half for each output. When used as a combiner, they add the powers together with some small loss.
      If you are in a very marginal area, two antennas each with its own preamp up on the mast and a combiner in the living quarters is a good way to go.
      The combiner is just a splitter run backwards. The little transformers inside work well in either direction.

    Hi Michael. I am hoping you will reply to this. I am wondering if you can offer advice on how I can be aware of which antenna and where to place it will be specific to my area. I live in the outskirts fo a small city but we are near an airport. We are within 65 miles of Boston which is where most of the local stations come out of and there is one smaller tv station in my city.

    • @MichaelSaves

      That’s pretty far. I would start with a tool that estimates channels you may be able to pick up. Mohu has one on its website. That’s the indoor antenna I have. I am assuming you may need an outdoor one. I also would recommend that you contact Tyler from the Antenna Man channel if you need an outdoor antenna.

    • @chrisryan8863
      @chrisryan8863 Год назад

      Oh, one more question for you if you don't mind. If I used an outdoor antenna do you know if weather (such as snow) would interfere with the antenna function? If I put one on my roof it will get snow on it often during he winter.

    The problem I'm having is my local PBS station, WPBT, took down their transmitter that was with all the other channels in my area south of Port St. Lucie, FL. and only broadcasts now from the north in Fort Pierce, FL., 20 miles away. With this change I can't get PBS since it is in the other direction of my 100 mile directional antenna that has no rotor! I use the PBS app, which is great, but it doesn't show all shows that are broadcast over the air. For example, last night we tried to watch "Shakespeare and Hathaway" and it was not on the app! Also, not on the app last night was "Father Brown" which was broadcasting a new show last night! My Samsung TV has a PBS app on it but it doesn't have the latest version which has live TV. I can get the latest version on my Fire TV stick but WPBT will not show their livestream in Port St. Lucie, FL. even though it is broadcast in my local area from Fort Pierce, FL over the air! This makes me extremely angry and it makes no sense at all! And, PBS wants me to donate money to them for this poor service?

    Over air doesn't work for me, even though the transmitters are 40 miles away, My apartment is on the opposite side, I have a hill in my way, The building owner doesn't allow outside antennas (even tiny ones that can't be seen ) I have tried different advertised indoor antennas and they just don't work! I need an outdoor antenna and its sad the FCC cannot mandate my apartment owner to allow me to set up an outdoor antenna OR the owner install a master antenna and change those without cable $10 a month to hook up to the antenna (think if the extra money the building owner could make BUT he is not interested)

    This is so funny...the younger generation hasn't a clue about over the air broadcasts and they sucker them into paying for these stupid little antennas that hook on the back of the tv and don't pick up even as good as a set of rabbit ears... but tje new generation doesn't know what rabbit ears are either...
    They grew up with dish...and now streaming...
    And they don't know that you can get Grit Tv and MeTV ect for free on over the air Broadcasts... they don't realize that tjat was the only way we could get it at one time ... Before satellite dishes and internet... in fact tjere were no sub channels either .. if you got channel 3 .. thats all you got was channel 3.. we only had 3 stations here at one time ..3 10 and 33.. Now we have 47 broadcast channels..... For Free Free Free.. and tou don't have to worry about your internet going down... or paying any money at all to see them ...
