  • This video highlights a common mistake many cord cutters make when setting up a TV Antenna to a TV set. Most times people automatically scan for new channels but miss this very important step that ends up in them losing several channels. Very few people know about this important step when scanning a TV set. Correcting it can gain you dozens of channels

I was receiving 80 channels, we had an electrical storm, which blew out our electric, when it came back on and we tried to watch ota TV, internet was still out, it was gone. I tried rescanning, I got auto channel search has been stopped due to an error.

Antenna Man, you have made my day! After installing my 100-mile antenna in the attic and not seeing any additional access to all the free stations, I decided to do a Chimney roof installation. When I got the same results i.e., no additional stations, I went back over my connections and setup and knew everything was done properly. And then I found this "common mistake" video and thought, well maybe... You were exactly correct because I am probably like so many people today who are going back to or adding an antenna, the only auto-scan that I performed was the original TV setup with a cable scan. Following your suggestions, I completed the auto scan for the antenna and I went from about 5 channels to 150. Thank you so much.

      Truth and Quality.
      Practical and Useful Information.
Some Tv's , the sequence of events so as the search for and receive Digital Broadcast Tv Channels , makes no sense.
And does require some creative thinking.
I my self the encountered the situation from time to time.
And Yes can be frustrating to the point of breaking something in anger.
Connect a different Tv and see how that goes.

I can see where that error could occur. However, there’s another issue that can impact OTA channel scans: cable splitters. Every split deletes at least 50% of the available signal! When running a channel scan, you want to eliminate the splits. Simply replace the splitters, for the purpose of the channel scan, with 75 ohm barrel connectors. Having the strongest possible signal for the scan ensures your tv will find all the available channels. You can put the splitters back inline after scanning.

I think a lot of people trying to cut the cord make this mistake. I see people in product reviews saying a certain antenna didn't get more than 2 or 3 channels when they know 25 are in the area. I can stick a wire coat hanger on a cable and hang it out the window and get 5 of the 9 channels I watch from 44 miles away. Thanks for your channel, it's great !

As of this writing on January 4, 2020 Tyler's "Antenna Man" channel has approximately 56,200 subscribers. For all of 2019 Tyler's channel grew by 54,081 new subscribers (me included). If growth continues at this rate he should be at the 100,000 subscriber mark by the end of 2020. I have really enjoyed watching the growth of this channel over the past year and have learned much. After he attends the CES in Las Vegas I hope he will make video outlining the 2019 growth in the channel and what the viewers can look forward to in the coming year. While I am still stuck at three over the air (OTA) channels I have recently learned that they are all relatively low powered and if the new ASTC standard is implemented, I could possibly lose all three channels. OTA TV is rapidly becoming a large population phenomenon and those of us in more rural areas unfortunately are still married to cable. Still I love this channel and hope for its continued growth in 2020 and the years to come.

The first reviewed rotating "worst antennae" has been sat outside our rural WA home for 3 years now. Admittedly, we haven't thrown it on the floor and hit it with a sledgehammer, but it has been exposed to rain, wind, snow and ice and hasn't missed a beat. We get 45 channels with it, where other, more expensive antennas got 10 or so. We highly recommend it.

Mine picks up certain channels at certain times of the day or night. Some work from 9 in the morning to 6 at night, or 3 in the afternoon to 2 in the morning. Weird stuff like that. Oddly enough, things pick up better when it’s raining. And when a plane or helicopter comes over, it blacks out until it’s gone.
Every now and then, it goes to no signal when a car passes by ( I’m in the country). Sometimes channels will completely disappear for days at a time. Sometimes I get an odd ball channel for a day or so( doesn’t happen often though).
It’s free, but this is kind of annoying. I will be 110 minutes into a 2 hour movie and I lose signal... that will make you dance on the line of sanity right there.

    Truth and Quality.
    Practical and Useful Information.
Some Tv's , Brands , Models , will default to the cable Tv mode for channel scans.
And getting to one of the Antenna Channels modes , is a situation because the sequence of events to get there and channel scan for antenna channels does not make logical sense.
Keep ending up in the cable mode.
So requires several tries of creative thinking to get to the correct antenna mode channel scan.

The good thing about digital tv in the UK is that all the different tv stations meant to be received in a certain area, and there are many, are all broadcast from the same transmitter tower (mast) meaning that your aerial (antenna) can be aligned perfectly to that tower for optimum reception of all channels.

( having the Tv transmitters at one location ).
There are Humans here in the USA that have a Deep Hate of all antennas.
Yes I know that you most likely have a tough time understanding the stupid hate of antennas , however is Really True.
And these Humans push their insanity off on every one else.
And tie up the transmitter situations in litigation for as long as possible.
Here in the USA there had to be a Federal Law so people can install antennas outside in plain sight.
Even so , the Humans crazies that Hate all antennas never stop they never give up working to there goal of banning all antennas.
Here is the Federal Law , www.fcc.gov/over-air-reception-devices-rule .
As time goes by there are clauses inserted into the Federal Law that are mostly because the Haters that are completely crazy.
So your comment is , no Humans can be that crazy , And I say Yes they can.
You say you are having troubles in your country.
Well Ok , try this on for size.
I do Handy Man Jobs , I am 70 and retired. I live in Maricopa, Arizona , south of the Phoenix Metro area. So I get reports from people that are moving here from California , they tell me one of many reasons they moved is because you can not even trust your own neighbors , they will turn you in for some infraction of the law because the , city , state or some other form the government will pay them a reward for turning you in.
And the homeless problem is over the top in California, they are pissing and shitting every where , on the sidewalks , in the street , in the public parks , in peoples yards. And shooting up right out in public for every one to see.
And here in the USA there are many Humans that are not interested in right or wrong , They Just Want To See The Ball Bounce.
And Yes I know that many people of all over the world know more about the USA then the people that born in the USA.
And Yes I know that many people around the world still look to the USA as the shining light of the world.

@@genesky61 Not only do all the UK tv stations broadcast from the same transmitter mast serving a certain area (as previously stated), but generally, wherever possible, they broadcast all their signals using only frequencies within a certain subsection of the UHF frequency band meaning that the tv aerials (antennas) can be designed especially to work at their best with reception of the said frequencies used for the transmitter they are aligned with.

My advice is, avoid running the scan when the weather may interfere with the scan, such as strong winds, heavy rainfall or any kind of electrical storm. In such conditions, the scan may fail to recognize and store some channels which could be easily received during calmer weather that does not interfere with signal reception.

      Truth and Quality.
      Practical and Useful Information.
Mostly the interference is the movement of Trees and Tree Leaves in the wind.
The current Digital Broadcast Tv standard , ATSC 1.0 does not cope well with moving reflected signals.
A new Digital Broadcast Tv Standard that is coming and is known as ATSC 3.0 will go a long way with coping with all types and kinds of interference.
This new ATSC 3.0 will not happen over night , it will implemented over time , likely over a few years.
The bigger more powerful Tv Networks and PBS will have ATSC 3.0 first.
      Then the smaller Tv Stations.
And while all this is happening , there is a planed ( not chiseled in stone ) 5 year transition period where , ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 are transmitted at the same time.

A good feature for TVs like this would be to scan for additional channels only. That is, just skip scanning the frequencies that have already been found and search "in between" them for additional channels. For example, if you tweaked your antenna and think you might then get more channels, an "incremental" scan feature would be nice.

Your comment regarding the setting for scanning channels (antenna or air vs cable makes perfect sense. I spent hours going through all my setting to make that adjustment and there is no option to seek one frequency vs another. My scan always result in no channels found. Since I have no window near the installed TV (and the app finder shows me where the nearest towers are) I wonder if the signal cannot navigate the two interior walls for connection.

I went commando back in 2012 and figure I've saved over $5k for just basic cable. Spending anything for TV now seems insane. I'm no longer a slave to it and I've convinced many others to try it after they see how crystal clear my reception is with a $50 antenna. I get 30+ channels that includes all the networks both USA and Canada.
