You really need a before and after of each lamp. Watching the close ups of you cleaning and working doesn't show the end result. I watched entire video but didn't see but one result at the end.
So sorry you were disappointed! I try to improve with each video and there is still room to grow!
I loved these changes. I volunteer at a small used furniture shop our church runs to help fund our charity work. Often we end up with so many lamps. I can use these ideas to fix some of them up.
That's a great idea Shelly! You will enjoy the process and others will benefit too! Blessings to you 🥰
I need a lamp
Bar keepers friend works the best. Make a paste apply let sit overnight and then get to scrubbing. Amazing the results.
That's great stuff too! Thanks for sharing!
I just subscribed to your channel and I love the lamp makeovers I too have made over many lamps and lampshades and I was doing one for my daughter and boy are you right about being careful when you’re using dictionary pages. I was using dictionary pages and some cut outs of some peonies. it turned out so beautiful, but I did not pay any attention. After I had found the word Peone for the flower I just kept going through the dictionary and using the pages with the letter P and you guessed it right on the back there was a P word for a male part ha ha ha ha ha. Neither my daughter or I noticed it for about two weeks and then one day I was looking at it and I’m like does that say what I think it says and….. yes it did😂
Omgoodness that is a hilarious story!! I’m pretty sure I have missed words. Agh!! Thanks for watching and for subscribing!🥰
I love Earth Brite…it cleans silver beautifully…..you can dye the shades with tea bags too
Earth Brite is great Carolyn! And I love the idea about dying the lampshades. Sounds like another video!
I love your makeovers. I would be worried that the material may catch fire . Are there any safety checks you can do first?
That gold lamp turned out so beautiful. Was worth the extra effort you put into it. Redoing lamp shades intimate me. But it so worth it with those old shade designs. Using that gold stuff brings the lamps to a whole different level. Love it all.
Thanks! I don’t mind experimenting with the shades especially when they are cheap! I can usually get shades for under $3. So it’s worth it to try. Happy thrifting 😀
The reason why the brass lamp didn’t polish up easily was because originally, it was lacquered after being polished. Lacquering preserves the bright look. But, the lacquer was old and the acids in your polish removed it. Lacquer is smart - will save you many hours of polishing!
Thanks for sharing the info! I knew of an elderly lady who had a lot of brass pieces in her home. She would say she had it ‘dipped’ so maybe that’s what she was referring to. She also polished it often - every couple of weeks - using Brasso. Her brass was a beautiful deep rich tone. It’s probably because of the dipping! Thanks for sharing your info😊
I use metal polish from the automotive store to clean jewelry and it is perfect for that. Maybe on lamps, too.
Love this video and the ideas. Going to try that guilding paste for the lamp I’m working on currently. Thanks for linking the products. ❤❤
You did a great job! I like the cleaned brass! I suffer from severe depression & leaving areas that are not cleaned makes me feel that’s ALL I can see.
Thanks for your kind words Debbie. I hear you about leaving some of the areas unpolished. I have similar thoughts. Sometimes the unfinished areas of our life can glare at us. Big hugs for your struggles 🥰🥰
Thanks for your great ideas! I loved the idea of decopaging the paper to the shade. I will definitely try that! Also, I really liked the black with the gilding wax. Beautiful!
The black with gold is beautiful. Where did you get the little tub of gold?
Hi Joan! The little tub of gold is gilding wax and I have it linked in the description below the video. Click on the "More" and the description will open fully. You will see all of the links there! Let me know if you have a problem finding it! 😀
The dictionary pages on a shade are so fun to do. I've used book pages on other projects, it's one of my fave things to do with mod podge! So glad you enjoyed the projects - thanks for watching 🥰
You are not weird cleaning lamp or any kind of cord. I’ll forget to do it though. Yes absolutely if it gets dirty…clean it!
Thanks Candice! Once I discovered how dirty they are, I couldn't go back. You can unknow some things 🤣
Please show lamps lit at night so we can see how they look with light shining through. Thanks for sharing what products you use. Lots of crafters seem to use Dixie Bell. Is it a better product than paint you find in stores? TFS
I will try to get pics of the lamps and add them to a community post this week. Stay tuned! I love using Dixie Belle products. Especially the paint - it’s a high quality paint in gorgeous colors😊
I don't like cone shades myself. I like drum shades with harp fittings. You can put a new finial on top and make lamps like this look much nicer. Thanks for showing the cleaning parts i.e. the cords.
Drum shades have their own look for sure! Thanks for your input😊
Those lamps turned out beautiful so unexpected and staging them at the end really showcased the style
I'm so glad you enjoyed the lamp projects! The little washstand (you can't see the whole thing in the images) got a little makeover. I will be sharing that video this coming Saturday! Thanks for watching! 😊
Bar keepers friend works best on brass
That stuff is great!
Never thought about the dirty cords until you brought it to light, now i have to clean the all!!! Love the brushed gold look on the black lamp, yes! Linen lamp shade with pleats is great and they are at the frame bars so the shadow lines up perfectly!
So glad you enjoyed the lamp projects Heather! And I'm sorry, Your welcome is in order now that you know about those dirty cords!! Some things you can't unknow 🤣
Neither did I😮. And now I’m cleaning mine as soon as the video ends😂
Those frame bars in lamp shades are referred to as ribs, I believe. Appreciate your tip about using clothes pins to clamp the fabric. And I enjoy the gilding wax on the details of most darker colors, not just black. Dark wax can be used on light colors for a similar effect, in a shabby chic vein. Your inspiration for breathing new life into tired treasures is a welcome boost, and your details on how to go about the various steps involved are so helpful, especially for beginners to upcycling furniture like me.
Please, consider pronouncing MOD Podge correctly. I know lots of people get in the habit of calling it Modge Podge, but that always feels a bit dodgy to me. Just a pet peeve of mine, I guess.
Why is it no one burns their fingers w hot glue whats the secret I'm scared for like😢
Believe me, I burn my fingers! There are protective gloves you can use for a hot glue gun. I’m terrible at doing anything with gloves on though so I don’t use them. Here is a link if you are interested! rstyle.me/+OntlJHblojBUroq50zFuSg
The thrift store brass lamp would not clean up as it had been sealed with a varnish sealant which is designed to not tarnish. However over the years these go dull. As you found out by removing that sealant you can then fully polish the surface.
Thanks for the info Jane! The old sealer was in bad shape for sure! It looks better now😊 Thanks for watching and sharing your info!
The brass on the lamp has been sprayed with a clear enamel. Don’t use steel wall on brass because it scratches the soft copper alloy. Once I get the enamel off are use “Brasso.” It is brilliant and the only way to clean brass alloys. I cleaned an antique, wood and brass, 3 1/2 foot ships steering wheel for my father. It came up beautiful. If I am not getting anywhere I soak the brass in vinegar (if there is no enamel.) The brass, bronze or copper will turn pink. Once cleaned with “Brasso” the item is beautiful. To keep the shine use a clear enamel for brass, bronze and copper.
BTW. your lamps are beautiful and are a passion for Hubby and myself. Cheers from Australia.
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with all of us! I really appreciate it and I am sure others will find it helpful as well😊
Sprayed with…..‘lacquer’ not enamel.
steel wool
I love the black lamp with gold over it
Me too! It’s an easy look to create on so many projects 😊
I love the pantena look. Leave it.
Thanks Colleen! I think I will leave it as is. At least for now 🤣
You are not weird. Cords can be nasty.
Yes they are!! Thanks for the confirmation 😀😀
It's my first time to see your work. I really liked the black base with gold highlights, and the way you covered that lampshade.
Thanks! I’m so glad you enjoyed the lamp makeovers😊
I bought a floor lamp years ago. I had it rewired. The lamp shade had an ugly material on it , so I had an old skirt Paisley print. I did cutting and glueing. The lamp looks beautiful
That is a great idea! I will have to keep my eye out for an old skirt to use for a new lampshade! Thanks!☺️
Oooo, i hate dirty cords too!! You're in good company cuz I'm the same. I think they're disgusting. ☠️
They are so disgusting!! 🤣
Tarnish or patina? Be careful when you think about removing this. You may be destroying a valuable piece.
Thanks for your tip!😊
years ago I bought two lamps at the Goodwill bins. They had four separate metal pieces that looked possibly oriental. I am an artist and dislike even numbers. Took both lamps to a man who fixes etc. lamps. Because if I had gone with three of the pieces the lamp would have been too short. So he did one with five pieces and that meant the second lamp was no longer useable. Unfortunately I had a renter in the home for several years and she took the odd ;pieces when she moved. I keep hoping to find another lamp but even looking on Ebay and other places have never seen another one. The pieces are probably brass or possibly copper. and have stamped design onto half.I love how you make new and better from old and tired.
Judy, that was a great idea to make one lamp out of two! I’m sure it was very unique. Hopefully you will make a similar one again one day! Keep looking! Thanks for the inspiration. Maybe one day I could do the same😊And I get it about odd numbers!
You’re definitely not weird! Grime, and germs can get embedded on anything. Cords aren’t any exception so I always clean them!
Yay for all of us cord cleaning fanatics!! 🤣
@@ReinventedDelaware Yep. By the looks of some of the doctor’s offices I’ve been to their cleaning people could stand to learn more about cleaning. I took a microbiology class for nursing, and discovered how germs are everywhere!
Don’t think it was tarnish; it was probably lacquered.
Thanks Pam! 😊
Sorry but i found it very amateur.
I like the look of the tarnished areas, gives the finish depth.
I like that way of thinking! Thanks for your input! 😃
I agree!
You always have such great projects and you explain things so well! I wish you would do a collaboration with a couple of other DIYers on RUclips. I think it would help to increase your exposure and get you more viewers. Your channel is just so good!
Omgoodness, thank you Joanne! Your encouraging words mean alot to me. I wish I could grow my channel too. RUclips can be a challenge to grow. In the meantime, we will keep on upcycling and reinventing! Have a great day🥰 Thanks for your support!
You’re not weird!
Those of us who favor cleanliness, will notice how all electrical cords attract dirt and grime. Especially kitchen appliances. My Home Economics teacher required a clean kitchen space… it was part of our grade. That included polishing up our toasters and blenders and their cords.
I loved my home economics classes! All through jr high and high school, I was in those types of classes. Cleanliness was taught for sure. Thanks for sharing your experience 😊
Dirty cords--even at home with old lamps.
Yes! They are so dirty even in our own homes!😂
There is a product called MAAS. Its sold at Walmart and is the best polishing cream Ive ever used. But as I watched longer, lol, your cream worked, lol
Thanks for telling me about MAAS! I will add it to my Walmart grocery list 🥰
I always clean my cords!
I do too now that I know how dirty they get!
Should have left that beautiful lamp shade alone . nothing was wrong the way it was . some time out creavity is not welcome on every thing
Thanks for your input Evelyn😊
You, of course, can do whatever you want with your lamp.
new subbie here! your channel is brilliant!
Omgoodness, thank you so much! I appreciate the encouragement :)
You showed a shade with a lot of small pletes which I instantly recognized on a floor lamp I currently have. Haha. I like mine fine, but you have a lot of great ideas. I had an old, tired looking brass lamp that was the right style & height for it's spot so I bought a spray can of stone. It goes on sorta rough. I cleaned the lamp first and used a primer. After the 2 coates of the stone, I flecked tiny bits of moss green on it. It is such an improvement & it does look like a stone lamp base.
Love that idea Marilyn! I’ve used the stone spray paints and they are amazing. I’m glad your lamp suits your home fine! Have a great day and thanks for watching 😊
Your not weird. I clean cords to. It's one of my pet pieces. 😂😂😂
We are like minded!😂
I love your techniques with the lamps I have some brass lamps at home and I am surely going to use your products. I’m so happy I found your page I have subscribed, and I am sure taking your advice. Your items are gorgeous. I love the lamps and the shades, now I have a new station to watch. Thank you for the upload. Many blessings to you and your family. 💕🥰🙏🏽💕🥰🙏🏽
I'm so glad you found our channel too! It's fun to share ideas and inspiration with others. Thanks for subscribing. BTW, if you get the Earth Brite to clean the brass, you will love it!! Blessings to you too! 🙏🏻
Excellent Excellent brass over black
So glad you like that look. It's super easy to do too! 😊
Have you tried Brasso?
I have tried Brasso. It's a great product even though the smell is strong. But it works great too! 😊
Its called a Lamp shade Frame
Thanks so much for the info!
Lemon juice and salt
Thanks for the tip!😊
Black and gold is so elegant. I love it.
I think so too! So glad you enjoyed the projects 😀
9:12 I got an old lamp from an estate sale that is really heavy, and reminds me of the one you’re cleaning now. My sister in law bought the other 2 lamps that they had for her sister. They seem to think they were getting antiques, but I knew better. My grandfather, and uncles refinished, and sold antiques for many years so I have had some exposure to identifying real antiques.
I'm sure you have a wealth of information after watching them for so many years! That's an invaluable skill 😊
@@ReinventedDelaware Thanks, but it also helps to be as old as I am. 😂
I never used to even watch RUclips, but then I got disabled, and now I watch too much.
The vertical braces on the lampshade are called ribs. Great job!
Thanks for the info Christine! So glad you enjoyed watching 😊
The lamp probably had a clear finish to keep it from tarnishing and also has some color in it to fake antique it. When I had some brass drawer pulls refinished I had a clear satin put on it to keep from tarnishing. You probably wore off the finish with the steel wool and polish.
I think you are correct Catherine! Some others have said the same. I knew an elderly lady who had alot of brass lamps. She used to take them to get them redipped (her words) to bring back the shiney luster. We also polished her very old brass lamps with Brasso. It tore my hands up! Thanks for chiming in the conversation! 😊
I must mention the apron , oh my goodness!!! I love it!!! I need that kind it looks like a bibbed jumper too cute 🥰
I have a video showing how I made the apron. It's soooo easy to make! Here is a link to the video if you want to watch: ruclips.net/video/qmiS--XC2gw/видео.html
I think the wires on the lampshade are called ribs. I love what you did with the lampshades! And the brass lamps. It's good to be reminded how dirty various cords get!
Omgoodness, I had no idea what they were called! Thanks so much for letting me know. We are always learning something new! 😍
Liked the gold over the black lamp very much
That look is so easy to create too! Hope you can try it one day😊
Have you ever tried Simicrome? Not sure how to spell it. It’s been used by the military for decades. Best brass polish!
I haven’t tried that! I will look it up. Thanks for the suggestion 😀
Another option is to cut off that power cord and use rechargeable electric lightbulbs. They're cheap and some of them, still cheap, have a remote-controlled dimmer you control from your phone.
That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
I am buying the gold with your link immediately ✨️ 💛 I just found you today, and I have fallen in love with you! Thank you for the good ideas you are giving the world. ❤❤❤
Thank you so much! I hope to continue to bring project inspiration for you!
Love this! I always save the linen bag that linen sheets come in! Now I know how I could repurpose those!
Great idea!! Now I want to buy linen sheets!
Wow, these all turned out nice! You showed great before pic; but what about an after pic?
Would Brasso work for the brass or brass look!?!
Thank you for your information. ❤️😀
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the lamp projects. And I should have shared better after shots. I plan on sharing them in a communty post this week. Sorry!! I'm trying to improve with each video :)
Magnets only stick to ferrous (iron based) metals. Just because a magnet doesn’t stick doesn’t mean brass necessarily. It could also be aluminum, zinc, copper, bronze, or other non ferrous metals. Other metals can be plated to look like brass and could be damaged by polishing.
Thanks for your information! I really appreciate it😊
I'm so glad you are turned off by those filthy cords as I am! I'm so weird that I sometimes put on gloves just to touch them! EEE-UUU!
I like the red shade you have in the background because I have one just like it. Mine is dirty and needs to be redone-somehow. Sure would like to know your suggestions on how to re-do it.
We need to start a 'Clean the Cords' club! haha! As for the shade, I painted mine but manybe you could just give yours a really good cleaning. Happy upcycling!.😊
Just found you and I'm in love with your channel! You speak so elegantly and I appreciate your vocabulary! I was sold on calling the metal on the lamp shaped as"boning". I will forever call it that! lol
Hahaha! I have been a seamstress for years and I've made lots of formal gowns. Boning seemed the appropriate word in my mind. We all need a liittle shaping, right?? 🤣 Thanks for watching!
I covered a lampshade with that “accordion” type paper shipping material; it turned out great. I wish I could buy it. (There’s an interesting RUclips about the invention of that paper!)
That video sounds interesting. I love seeing history about products like that. I bet you lamshade looks great!😊
No, they all do even that's your own home.I'm getting dirty all the time and dusty.I have the sweetness last when I'm sweeping they're cleaning.I have to pick up the cord and clean the cord.Really good because you just can't get the dust off up
I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking about dirty lamp cords! have a great day Dorothy!
That video left me completely unsatisfied. Where are the after views, particularly the lampshade with the dictionary pages? I need close-ups to study your final projects.
I’m sorry you were disappointed! I will share some close ups in a community post later today! I’m trying to improve my skills with each video 😊
I’m really bad about not wearing gloves when I do crafts, cleaning, or anything else that can damage the skin. My poor hands crack, and are so rough! There’s a lotion called “working hands”, and it really helps heal, and protects the hands.
You and me both! Gloves are never on my hands. Working Hands sounds like a great hand lotion - thanks!😊
Great ideas. I bought 2 thrift store lamps, same metal but different shapes. I bought stretch sequin pants on clearance, and just slipped some of the kegs over the lampshades. Glam is not really my thing, but it’s great for my enclosed patio.
What a great idea! I will keep my eyes open for thrifted fabric for lampshades. Thanks!😊
Have you ever took your paper shades? And after you've put the first coat on, go back with a heart shape or flower shapes and just put some flowers and a rays, cut flowers out and Bind them or make flowers on there and put them on the shade. That would be pretty.I think then you could antique it a little bit too with a split spottle
Thanks for the ideas Dorothy! You are so creative :)
A few comments on your magnet demonstration....magnets are attracted to iron ( which steel contains). So you are correct, a magnet will not stick to brass. But that does not prove the yellow metal is brass...magnets also do not stick to zinc, copper, bronze, aluminum, etc. All its proves is that it is not common steel or iron. Also, the steel wool you showed is not stainless. Magnets do not stick to (most) stainless steel. The steel wool is just that - steel wool.
Thanks John for the info! As for calling it stainless, that was a mishap in my words. Sometimes the right word escapes me! I realized it when I watched the video back on YT. Agh! It was too late to change my words😳
15:09 I’m not really that confident in using hot glue on metals, even with fabric over it. I know it sticks initially, but many times doesn’t hold up that long.
I agree with you about hot glue on metal. I've had pretty good experience if there is some fabric to glue on. Thanks for watching and commenting! 😊
You will be surprised what we use in india for our brass temple lamps. Tamarind & salt soaked in water like a dough paste and rub or scrubber it on brass pcs. Even lemons and salt Wash & rinse well dry it. or Brasso, use a polish cloth
That's amazing!! Thanks for sharing your tips!
All my lamps are from the thrift store, and they have to be cat proof! 😼😺😸. I probably know more about lampshades than most 😂
You sound like the lampshade expert!🤣
Nice
Thanks! 😊
Thanks for the lesson. I'm ready to try making my own lamp shades.
You are most welcome! have fun with your project!
My grandma had the 2nd brass lamp, it never was bright and shiny! And I’m pretty sure my aunt had the first brass lamp but bigger 💜
Thanks for you input and for watching! :)
Nice work! I'm interested in doing some of these to sell, what would you charge at a flee market for a lamp you have redone?
Depending on the cost of the original lamp, I would charge $30- $50. It depends on your area and your particular market. Also consider if the lamp is an antique or an old piece from 20 or so years. Hope that helps!😊
I use liquid Barkeepers Friend on any metal and it work great. Give it a try, It can be found in grocery stores on the cleaner aisle.
Thanks for the info! :)
I don't understand how the newspaper put onto the lamp shade with modge podge came out. I am new to this and I wanted to see the final result. I'm not sure how to do it. Thank you.
Hi Judith! Sorry I didn't show that project long enough in the video. I'm trying to improve my editing skills with each video. Here is a link to the full blog post that might be helpful for you! www.reinventeddelaware.com/thrifted-lamp-makeover-ideas/
Another project jumper here... In my case it's called ADHD.
Hahaha!! We are the project jumping ADHD club!!🤣🤣
I always wipe my cords regularly. The first brass lamp turned out to be is stunner!
Thanks! I’m so glad you like it😊
It has a varnish on the brass to keep it shinny. You will need a remover for that. Then the brass can becpolushed.
Thanks Pamela! I will pass on the info to my daughter who has the lamp in her home😊
Put ketchup on brass. Let it sit for a short time, depending on how tarnished the brass is, and wipe off/buff.
I'm going to give that a try!☺️
Excellent work 👍👍🙋🏽♀🙋🏽♀
Thank you Amy! 😊
Your ideas are good and your information of products was informative but your makeovers are messy and not refined.
Thanks for your input Maureen😊
Can’t seem to find the right-look for 2 small copper lamps? Can you help?
Are you looking for ideas for the lamp itself or for the shades? If it's for the shades, you could paint the fabric in a soft linen color. That would be so pretty! For the copper - you could use the Earth Brite Cleaner to polish them. It works great on copper! Here is a blog post showing the results on copper: www.reinventeddelaware.com/clean-burnt-copper-pan/
I like the black paint with the gold highlights.
Thanks! It’s an easy technique 😊😊
You didn't need primer under the DB Silk- Anchor? Will it hold up over time??
Hi Donna! No primer is needed under Silk paint! This chalk mineral paint has a built in primer. You would only need an additional primer if the surface was slick. The surface on this lamp wasn’t so no primer needed! The paint is very durable😊
Do you need to pit a sealant over the gold gilding paint you used for the highlights?
I didn't apply a sealer. The gilding wax will harden and cure over approx 30 days!
There is a coating on most brass products. The stainless steal pad will take off the coating!
Thanks! I wasn’t getting anywhere with the steel wool. The coating was so discolored and in my opinion , it had to come off to look better. Thanks for watching and for chiming the conversation!😀
I like what you did with the lamps but what about the inside edges on the top and bottom of the linen shade?
I just trimmed them as neatly as I could. Maybe I should add some trim too! Thanks for asking and watching! :)
The brass lampe looks like it had a lacquer on it. Great work.
Thanks! I think that lamp had a lacquer finish but it was in bad shape. It felt like sand paper!
Lamp shade looks Sloppy.
Noooo lamp №3 is antique brass???? Maybe ruined
Sorry to dissappoint you!
would like to have seen the dictionary shade after it was finished
Sorry about not including a better image of that shade! Here is the blog post that has a great image of that lamp and shade: www.reinventeddelaware.com/thrifted-lamp-makeover-ideas/
Magnets do not stick to a lot of metals, not just brass ❤ steal and iron magnets love 😊
Thanks for the info!
Loved gold over black paint
Me too! It's such a good look on so many pieces!
Too much chit chat…don’t needs so much on cleaning lamps.
Haha! This brought a chuckle!
That pleated shade was an original Stiffel lamp shade.
Thanks for the info! It was very brittle and in bad shape😊
Personally I respect your choice to create a look that changed the look of the lamp. I have 2 lamps that were passed down in my family 2 generations thus far. I was going to donate to the local thrift store but the guy chose not to keep take it due to a small dent in the lamp shade. Ive decided to redo it, but no idea had came to mind until now. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Pamela for your encouraging words! I hope you have fun redoing your lamps. Have a great day 😊
@@ReinventedDelaware Thank you for sharing, I learned something new, and I love it. May you continue to share helpful tutorials. ☺️
salt and lemon juice will shine brass right up!
I will give that a try sometime!
It's more interesting not totally cleaned antique like
Thanks for your input! 😊
The first one, I loved the red shade. Why paint it?
The lamp was headed to my daughters house and I knew she would not like the red color. I am to please :) Thanks for watching!
OMG, u ruined that second lamp!
So sorry the project disappointed you! I hope you enjoyed the other projects :)
