    Yo! Just thought I'd let you know you inspired me to build a 11ft floating desk for mine and my son's set up using this method. I used a desk top from and old metal desk I cut in half and re surfaced. I work in a fab shop so I was actually able to aquire the pipe for free. So far I am loving the results. Wish I could add pictures to yt comments lol. Anyway thank you for this video.

    Cool set up and idea. My one piece of constructive criticism: get the PC tower off the floor, especially since it’s carpeted.
    It chokes airflow since you don’t get the proper airflow through the bottom vents near the PSU and increases the amount of dust etc than can build in your PC.
    If you don’t want to put it on the desk (although you got plenty of room to do so), you can get a small wooden box or something to put it on underneath your desk. That’ll be enough to raise it off the carpet and let the feet that are probably on the bottom of your case create enough space for airflow through the bottom. And then you wouldn’t have to rework your cable management all that much either.

    This is a really smart way of putting your desk together however, my advice for you is to buy 2 more monitors the same size (no need to be the same brand and too expensive). Then you can run an HDMI cable to your company laptop so it's not separated and you can hide it somewhere where it is not visible. or buy a stand from amazon which can hold both of your laptops closed, and really make sure to add some plants, pops or anything of your choosing to customize it and run some RGB. I know this might cost few bucks but does not need to be done just my opinion of how I would have done it with some of my own customizations and inspiration sitting on the table so it is not empty and at the same time, it gives a good vibe. Now I need to find out if I'm allowed to drill in my apartment walls THANKS!!!

    I want to create a floating corner desk (into brick walls, not studs) but my carpenter is concerned that, doing it your way, the metal support bars will, over time, start to come away from the walls from the weight of the computers on the desk and people leaning on it. Has this happened for you?

    • @johnd7377
      @johnd7377 3 года назад

      one method i have used in situations where i am concerned about enough support is to install a backing. instead of mounting the pipe directly to the wall, mount a 2x6 that runs the horizonal length of the desk minus a few inches to keep it hidden. if mounting in brick use masonry anchors to secure the backing to the wall (for drywall mount to studs and/or drywall anchors). Then mount the pipe flanges to this 2x6. As long as you securely mounted the 2x6 to the wall the flanges and pipe should hold regardless of where you install them along the backing.

    • @Thomas998822
      @Thomas998822 2 года назад

      I can tell you right now that your carpenter is most likely concerned with making sure the two screw per flange are centered in the stud. That's the singular most important aspect of this whole project and it's certainly surmountable. The key is to not rely soley on a stud finders readings, one has to manually verify the exact location of those studs. My method is to find the stud's approximate location and then actually cut two small gashes on either side of the stud and mark its exact location (those gashes are easily repaired with some spackling and will be covered up by the desk anyway. I'm building a 6' desk with 1.5" of solid oak plywood (~70lbs). I'm using 1" pipe for extra strength. The pipe and the pipe to flange connection is bulletproof. No worries at all about the metal components. The ONLY other thing to consider is the flange to wall connection. An absolute requirement is 3" high quality deck/screw with coarse thread and the largest diameter that will fit in the flange hole. A deck screw like that has a minimum pullout strength of at least 150lbs, and really above 200lbs. I'm using 4 pipes. As a civil engineer, I'll make it simple and just say, take your theoretical highest imaginable desk load (for me I'm using 150lbs) and multiply it by 1.5 for a safety factor. Now you have a design load of 325lbs. Considering (4) supports, you divide the design load by four (since the supports will each carry 1/4 of the load). That's 81lbs per support. 81lbs per flange. Because of the cantilever-type loading of the flange, I'm, functionally, considering the top screw will carry the entire 81lbs. I'm more than comfortable with a screw with 200+ lbs of pull-out strength, being asking to support 81lbs long-term (even though it wont even be 81lbs consistently, but more like 40-50lbs). The basics have to be done right. You need a small pilot hole (exact size suggested on the screw manufacturers info and a simple jig to ensure the pilot hole is being drilled reasonably square and perpendicular to the stud) These are ultra conservative design specs, as they should be because I'm considering worst case scenario of a full-loaded desk AND someone deciding to sit on it. Once those screws are seated square in the stud, there is no doubt it will be more than secure. You could even go overboard and secure all (4) holes of the flange, by using "EZ Anchor (rated for 75lbs each)" or some other drywall anchor, for the other two flange holes. I might do this, and then you'll have a desk that will literally be easily rated for 500lbs.
      The guy in the video said, in a comment, that he weighs 194lbs and even stood on his desk.

    • @travisr.3667
      @travisr.3667 2 года назад

      @@Thomas998822 Thank you for this comment. I wasn't super stoked about only using two flange holes into the stud and have some high quality toggle bolts on hand, I know exactly how I'm doing mine now!
      How are you cutting your gouges to check for stud location btw?

    • @Thomas998822
      @Thomas998822 2 года назад

      @@travisr.3667 I marked the approx location of the studs with a stud finder. Then used the thinnest drill bit I could find, and drilled tiny holes of either side of the stud (starting out about 1/2" farther than the stud finder marks and moved closer until I hit wood). This gave me the exact location... which was essential because the stud finder was no where near exact enough.

    How’s this been holding up for you? Any corrections you would make if you did it again?

    Planning on doing a U-shaped desk with these steel pipes. Does your set up sag at all?

    good job... Never thought it's possible given Ikea's kitchen top is so heavy... and you're mounting onto dry wall stud..

    I dont know if I missed it, but what do you think is the max weight the table can handle?

      Most likely a few hundred pounds. If youre worried you can pick up L stands and put them two on the end and one in the middle. THen use the pipe method shown in the video. This would basically put the particle board as the weak link imo.

    you should have used some lag bolts in the studs. i'd be surprised if that desk hasn't fallen down yet since its been 2 years.
