I too am a Sony shooter. I travel a good deal and I am often in situations where gear weight is a major factor especially for long hikes with major elevation changes or flights on small aircraft where total weight is critical. One of my favorite wide lenses is the 16-35mm f/4 pz 353gm. On a recent trip to the Wyoming Rockies I shot more with this lens than all the others combined. The one prime I use is the 14mm f/1.8. Really great for astro work. At only 469gm it is a marvel of Sony engineering. I will be 78 in June and am focused on keeping gear weight down to avoid problems with my knees.. With all the improvements in sensors I find f/4 lenses to be perfectly good options. The 70-200 f/4 weights 840gm vs the f/2.8 1045gm for the new GM version.
I bought a 14-30mm f/4 for local hikes & international travel. I’ve used it so much more than I ever imagined. It has been a joy! I considered a 24-105 for the versatility but it was so much heavier & bigger. Over the years I’ve found I need a lighter setup to actually take the camera everywhere with me. That beats the extra reach any day in my book. Occasionally I’ve taken a 50mm with me as well, depending on the location.
I’m a Canon and Leica person but our lens choices are very similar. The holy trinity is a solid recommendation for sure. I love a good 24-105 regardless of brand for the exact reasons you mentioned. I find it covers at least 80% of my travel needs. I just returned from a 16 day road trip and my most used camera was the Q2 monochrome. Totally get this isn’t a camera for everyone but for the black and white lovers out there it just knocks my socks off. It’s fixed 28mm and I found it worked really well most of the time as a focal length. Love your video and congrats on being a SONY ambassador, that’s awesome!

I always carry the 35mm f1.4 and the Zeiss 55 f1.8 for when I want a shot that focuses more on the subject. Usually 90 percent of the time you only need the 35 🥰

I usually bring 4 lenses on the go… 20 f1.8 G for astro, 35 f1.4 Zeiss for portrait, street and low light (I am lucky to have a good copy so I am very reluctant to switch it for a GM🤪), my 24-105 G overall day shooter and yess that 100-400 GM is my main lens, this lens is just crazy for landscapes to wildlife and compression shots…

My MUST carry is my A7IV with the 16-35 GM, and sigma 24-70 2.8. I've recently added the Sigma 50 1.4 to my "must have" as well. I use to just carry the 16-35 and 24-70 but having that fast prime is so crucial! I also use to bring along my sigma 35 1.4 but i felt like i between the 16-35 and 24-70 AND the 35 i just had too many 35mm's on me, so that 50 kind of replaced the 35. 😅
I don't always bring this lens but if I'm going anywhere I know there's going to be animals then I bring along my Sony 200-600!

Another option travelling for wildlife photography is the 70-200 F2.8 GMii plus 200-600 F5.6-F6.3 G lens. That is what I took to Africa earlier this year and that proved a good combo
My go to travel set up is the 16-35gm and the 70-200 gm ii with the 2x teleconverter. If I have extra space I will add in the 50 gm
Hey man. I have the 70-200 gm ii as my only lens right now. Definitely need to pair it with something wider. I was also thinking the 16-35 gm. do you find you are missing out on any focal lengths? wishing you had something lighter? im kind of inbetween the 16-35gm or the 16-35G PZ and a fast prime. Cheers

I had a 35mm fixed lens in the beginning but decided to buy a 18-55mm lens for travelling. As you mentioned, it's really impractical to just have a fixed lens and I realised that quickly although I still like it for some moments.
Thanks for all the advice! chosing lenses to bring has always been a struggle for me too! I have a crop censor camera so my main one is the tokina 11-24mm f2.8 lens (equivalent to 16-30mm on full frame) which I got to replace my 18-55mm kit lens. I've found it to be much better and sharper, and the depth of field is great! though I do wish it would zoom more...lately I've been trying to use my 35mm f1.8 prime lens more though, I've been sleeping on it for so long!
My pick for the best travel lens: TAMRON 28-200 F2.8-5.6 full frame e-mount. It does almost everything. Although I own nine high quality primes & zooms when traveling by air to resort hotels both space and security are of concern.

For travel the 16-35 f4 pz is a beast. So lightweight/compact, has all the features you want, and has excellent image quality.

I love the 24-105, primarily to have SO much reach in one lens, and the optical stabilization that the 24-70 does not have! I actually have the 200-600 for wildlife. Thinking of getting the 35!
I could say the 16-35 and the 24-70 are the perfect duo. If I could only bring one lens it be the 24-70 as it gives you the good overall focal lengths.
24mm f1.4 GM + 55 mm f1/.8 Zeiss are my tiny travel combo. When I need it APS-C mode turn them into 35 mm + 85mm. Basically all I need.

My kit consists of 16-35mm GM, 70-200mm GM ii. This covers all my needs. I had a 100-400 GM but couldn’t find use of the 400mm much also I wanted the f/2.8 for low light situations.
I’m thinking of the same setup with the addition to a 2x teleconverter. More expensive but in return you get slightly less weight with more versatility.
Great video! One question and you may have a video on this that I haven’t seen, but when you go traveling and your doing your videoing what picture profile are you typically shooting in? Do you do anything to try and conserve space?
16-35 is crazy good. My favorite focal lengths are 20-24-28 and 35 and it’s marked on the lens and 2.8 is superb. Even if i have a prime i avoid 1.4 1.8 especially day time due to losing context and background, soft image and over exposure. 2.8 is perfect and i preferably never touch or think aperture. Just run and gun boom boom. I love the heft of it. When i vlog i can grab it from the lens.
This is always a work in progress for me. When I was younger I'd carry a ton of fast primes, but over time got old fast. So then went to a super zoom, one lens and while convenient there was a magical quality often missing from the images. So now playing with the idea of two zooms and fast(ish) prime and picked up a GR III for when I just want to carry something for grab shots and/or family events. But still trying to figure out what works for me.

For years my travel lenses were the 24-70mm GM and 70-200mm GM. But, they were just too heavy. So, I went to the 24-105mm G and 70-200mm G lenses. But, I wanted to go a little wider and longer. Today my travel lenses are the 16-35mm GM, 35mm GM, and 100-400mm GM lenses.
Funny. Just happened upon this again. One year later and things have changed. My go to travel lenses are now the 24-70mm GM II and the 70-200mm GM II. On my upcoming trip I'll probably also take the 14mm GM and the 1.4x teleconverter.

I have many cameras, M43, APSc, FF. I could take any of them on a trip and have full coverage.
But, I started 50 years ago with Nikon film, and bought pro lenses, So now the only Dslr I have is the current D780 , and its advantage
for travel is that the optical VF uses very little power and if you shoot using it and not the rear live view monitor you can get
2200 shots per charge in the lithium battery. You can charge using a USB C or a powerbank, so running out of power is never an issue.
For my lenses I only need 2, and they are zooms. A Tamron F2.8 16- 28mm and a Nikon 28-300mm Superzoom with 4 f-stop image
stabilization. So with only 2 lense I span 16mm ultra wide to 300mm telephote. I have a very small Nikon SB400 ttl flash foe when
I need extra light. I carry in a reporter style camera bag. Total weight fully loaded is 8 lbs.

I have the 35mm f1.4 GM on my camera most of the time. It’s definitely my go to. I’ve debating the 100-400!
Get the 100-400.... I debated for a long time, finally pulled the trigger in 2018 and I love it. Just has a look that most people don't get. It is also portable and has a surprisingly short minimum focal distance... so can be great for some macro type shots...
I use a 100mm macro lens and a 24-105mm zoom lens for mainly flower n foliage photos.
I like the Fujifilm XF 18-135 mm. Weather resistant with OIS, a bit slow f/3.5-5.6 but very affordable.
That is a great range for travel. That's what my wife runs on her Sony A6500. She literally just has that and a Canon FD 50mm F3.5mm Macro that is adapter (she has the macro bug... mainly for wild flowers).

Can you show us how you shoot something like 0:08? Do you slow down in post or in camera? Are there any free option to slow it down other than adobe products? Also how do you color your videos? They always look so warm and inviting 😍
I have this kind of G-master lens! Honestly It’s quite heavy! Currently most of time I only carry G-24mm for traveling use.

My travel lens a Sigma 18-250 HSM lens I like that it goes from wide angle to telephoto I can spend photographing all day and not change the lens.
I’m a Canon shooter and my travel lenses are The cheap 16,24,35 & 50mm and The EF L 100-400 Mkii. The primes are soooo light and I carry them in a small bag with my Canon R6.
My absolute must have is a 28mm focal length. Currently using the Fuji 18mm f/1.4 since no other mirrorless systems has a good 28mm lens. Haven't used zooms in a while, but I might rent one when I travel. Overall, the 28 suits my needs for landscapes, environmental portraits, detail shots due to the close focus capabilities etc. I pair it with a Fuji 35mm f/2 which gives me a 50mm-ish equivalent.
I used to travel with a Sigma 18-35 but now that I shoot primes, I get really lazy and the 35mm f/2 barely leaves my bag. 28 is just too versatile.

Hi Allison, what would you recommend to get, the 70-200 GM ii maybe with a teleconverter or the 100-400 GM? I own the Sony 16-35 f2.8 GM, the Sony 35 f1.4 GM, also own 2 Sigma lenses...(at the time they were just newer lenses than the Sony GMs) the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 Art and the Sigma 85 f1.4 Art. As a professional creator I mostly shoot my video work with zoom lenses and photograph clients with my primes. Looking for a quality zoom that can be a versatile option and be in my travel kit all the times with 2 other lenses and a drone.

I'm sure you can't say this with the Sony sponsorship and all, but I just think you can get so much more bang for the buck with third-party lenses like the Sigma 24-70mm or the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8.
For supertelephoto, you might want the 200-600mm instead of the 100-400mm. When I shoot Micro Four Thirds at a 600mm equivalent for wildlife, I still want more reach than that.
That brings me to my Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II and the glorious 40-150mm f2.8 PRO lens. It will have to be pried from my cold, dead hand. I add a 2X teleconverter to it to make it an 80-300mm f5.6...and, with the 2X crop factor, that's a 160-600mm equivalent. I also use the 12-40mm f2.8 PRO for more normal shooting. The Panasonic Leica 25mm f1.4 and the Olympus 45mm f1.8 are great little prime lenses for street photography and portraits respectively.
But she only recommend Sony since she is an ambassadeur, even if they cost a kidney and a foot. This is why people need to think about "advice" from sponsored people.

what about the Sony 24-240mm lens, is this good enough for a travel around and day to day lens?

I have a few primes (the widest being 12mm), but I can cover from 17mm to 400mm in just 3 zoom lenses. I have the Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8, the Sony 24-105mm f/4 G and the Sony 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM.
I am guessing you have the Laowa 12mm F2.8. I have that one also but rarely take it out with me.... It's a bit heavy and hard to justify if you have an UWA F2.8 zoom. I do love a bunch of the images I have got with it though.... I don't know if you have noticed it is almost an UWA macro lens? you can get SUPER close to things... and also show them in context of their surroundings. Very cool lens!
Hi! eventough i agree with everithing you said, here is a cheaper, wide aperture, prime lens, alternative; 20mm/1.8 G lens, 35mm/1.8 or better the GM lens but known of being focus breathing, the 85mm/1.8 and a zoom. i have the 70-200 but that doesnt realy cut it so i sugest a longer focal length. My 2 cents.

No doubt you've been asked this a million times, but what lens do you use when you're presenting in the studio?
What do you think of the new 20 to 70 for all around travel
I feel like photography is always a compromise... and travel photography emphasises it. Do you take everything with you, feel weighed down and that you are always missing shots because you have the wrong lens attached, or do you go light and nimble but constrain yourself in some other way (e.g image quality, choice of focal lengths, etc). I sometimes like going super simple with a 24-240mm superzoom.... it is super freeing - especially travelling with non photographers who might get impatient. Most importantly.... you never miss 'the moment' because you are changing lenses or have the wrong lens attached... Sure... you have to know the lens and work a bit harder with the narrower apertures... but think of how surprised you were by the 24-105mm (its kinda the next level of that). I do recommend pairing it with a 35mm prime (on a second body) to get the best of both worlds. If I want to cover a full range with quality glass I will go with 16-35 GM, 24-70 Sigma F2.8 and the 100-400mm GM (I much prefer 100-400 because you get different looking photos than most peoples). Primes wise - I lean to 35mm, but if I know I will be shooting portraits I will take an 85mm or split the difference and do the 55mm (which is also a great option if you think you are mainly going to shoot wide or tele and don't want to take a "standard zoom"). For primes I go with F1.8s to just be a bit more light and nimble. Of course there are other adaptations like taking a 90mm Macro in wildflower season (also doubles as a portrait lens), or I may even go super light with an APS-C setup or RX100 VI. Each trip you have to decide what you take with you and what you take with you each day you go out. E.g. I have a trip back to Scotland planned for September which is mainly a photography trip (a little bit of seeing family) - for that one I am thinking the 3 zooms and the RX100.... but part of me wants to take a 35mm or the 55mm... leaning to the 55mm in case I want to ditch the standard zoom on some days.... decisions, decisions 😅
I’m looking for a lens that I can take pictures of people as well as landscapes, would prefer a do it all lens as opposed to buying multiple. Is it better to stay with Sony as I have a Sony A7C, or venture into Zueiss (Sic) for instance?
she really brings the holy trinity with her on travel. I traveled thr world with my Sigma 30 1.4. 99% of my shots with that, the rest with the 18-105@105mm.

You definitely carry larger lenses than I do for travel. Granted, I'm not traveling for pro photo work. I'll sacrifice a little bit in the name of portability. Either in clinical sharpness or aperture stops just to save some space. I might carry around a 24-70 sigma art zoom for the versatility, but for the most part I carry a couple plastic lenses from rokinon, the 24mm/f2.8 and the 45mm/f1.8. Of course, I'll grab some vintage glass too, but those are pretty small to today's standards.

Great video! I am struggling so much, I got the 24-70 f/2.8 GM for the same price as the 24-105G OSS so now I have both. But I need to pick one to sell, what would be your advice? Love the flexibility of the 24-105
hey tom, my 2 cents but depending what you shoot, my preference is the extra stop of the 24-70. Sounds like you got a great price vs 24-105 so holds more value for you. And depending if you have an A7R or A7 camera you can super 35mm for extra reach (at the loss of MP, less of an issue on the R and A&IV model).
I try to convince myself that 20 mm is wide enough, so I allways bring it with me. The 24-70 of course too. The 100-400 only when I know I will need it, and then mostly with a 1.4x teleconverter. If I think I don't need the 100-400 I bring a 70-180 (Tamron), much smaller and lighter.

It really depends on where your going and what you are photographing. If I was taking 1 lens it would be the 16-35 on the Sony. Then I would add the 100-400 with 1.5 TC for a second lens. I would take either the Tamron 28-75, 50 1.8 or the 24-105 if I took a third lens. I don’t think the 70-200 2.8 is a good travel lens the f4 version for less weight or the 100-400 are much better options.
I'm still a newbie and because I haven't travelled for the last 2 years I forgot all I knew about focal length and apertures... 😵💫
35mm f1.4 , 85mm f1.4 , 50mm f1.4, 35-150mm f2-2.8 tamron , sony 100-400mm gm, and for video 17-28 f2.8 tamron. These are all the lenses i own and i usually just bring the 35-150mm. Its all in one.
Interesting-no macro. Macro is my "must have".
Thanks for the video. I bought A73 for the purpose of shooting video. Lately I have tried shooting photo with it, the autofocus is exceptional IMO. However, the image quality of A73 will make me stick to Nikons.
I would probably use my Signa 24-70 F/2.8 on my Sony A77V or A99V.
To cut down on soze, I could use my Lumix G9 or my Lumix GX8 cameras with my 12-35 F/2.8

What camera was used to film this video?
My travel kit includes the Nikon Z28mm f2.8, Nikon Z14-30mm f4, Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 G2. I ordered the Nikon Z24-120mm f.4, in January (still not in stock) to replace my Nikon Z24-70mm f4 that was damaged when I fell along the Oregon coast last summer. The 24-70 still functions, but there are several issues that can’t be fixed. For bodies, it’s the Nikon Z6 and D500.
Oooh, how does the D500 do with video? I'm looking to upgrade my Nikon camera as it's 11 years old and want something for photos and video that will work with my current lenses haha
@@rachel.isabelle the D500 is great for sports and action, but, for video, the Z6 is the better option and will cost the same as the D500. With the Z6, you also get the eye detection and animal eye detection, along with improved tracking and in body stabilization. With the FTZ adapter, your DX or FX lenses can be used with the Z6.
@@kenparrent6770 Thank you, good know! how would you say the battery holds for the z6? I've been holding off getting mirrorless and sticking with DSLR partly because I heard the battery life was bad for mirrorless cameras in general lol
@@rachel.isabelle I don’t do much video that lasts more than a few minutes,so, no opinion there. For stills, the D500 battery is good for 1000 to 1500 shots, depending on LCD usage. The Z6 will get me in the range of 400 to 500 shots. I always carry back up batteries for either camera, though I seldom have needed them. The D500 also has dual card slots, while the Z6 only accommodates a single XQD or CF Express card. Both are capable in low light.

Personally, I decide which picture to take first. Then pick the appropriate prime lens (mostly Fujifilm 33mm f1.4) and do the shoot. On the other body I have a complementary lens so I can adept without changing lenses. Personally I think the focal length with its dof and distortion is a very important part of the composition. Nothing to fix by just turning the zoom ring.
And the moment it takes to change a lens gives you a bit of time to overthink what you want to achieve.

@@DDHDTV, If it's a relaxed shooting, no. But then I take the time to change lenses. Yesterday I shot a full day with one body in the studio. Just for the outside shooting, I took the second body.
It sucks that we can't get a hold of some of the Sony cameras anymore due to chip shortage which might last a couple of years. The A7C, A6600 and ZV E10 are no longer available. We'll have to spend an extra $1000 to get the A7 IV on the sony side of things.

What lens to buy for youtube talking head videos
Either the 35/1.4 or 50/1.2 alone is the only lens you need for travel (assuming it is not a wildlife safari). Keep it simple and zoom with your feet. The wide aperture is worth 100X more than a variable focal length. Constraint with respect to focal length usually improves the quality of photographs, as the photographer is forced to "see" through that perspective. If you try it, you'll soon see all kinds of photos you would have passed by are now appearing in your viewfinder. All the best.

I have 2 A7Rii. 16-35, 25, 35, 85 and 70-200. Whenever I travel. I would bring 2 body and 2-3 lenses. In most cases the lenses would be 16-35, 35 and 85.
I run an A7R3 and an A7R2. If you get a chance to upgrade one of those bodies to the R3... you should do it. I put it off for ages - but then in December 2019 B&H had it for under $2K brand new... the AF is just so much better you will never know how you lived without it. I believe the R3 is the best deal in photography and honestly - I can't think of a reason why I would ever need more camera than that (unless I REALLY get into birding).
@@MeAMuse yes. The new cameras. Anything later than R2.. the af improvement is on another or many level better. I hvnt upgrade is only because… 1) i dont make money from taking photo. 2) Most of the time i just shoot static or people moving not running. So. The af from r2 is still manageable. 3) altho 6 years old. Both camera still clicking for me.
Having said that. If they break down. I will change in a heartbeat. Been awhile. Lol
@@sgpork I totally get you. I was in that mindset for the longest time - and actually, I did replace it because my R2 is broken in 2 key areas (screen and viewfinder) but is still going. I guess the point is that it really is just much better even for slow-moving subjects or stationary subjects... and even just how quickly the camera starts up time and battery life. Friendly nudge from another fanatic ;)

I would say reverse engineer this process, find lenses that you feel are best for you and see which mount the majority of them belong to and buy that.
You basically listed almost the entire focal range haha!
For the rest of us who don't travel just for photos and videos. a mobile phone is all you need. 😄
